Editor’s note “The future depends on what we do in the present.”

– Mahatma Ghandi –

As we prepare for the year-end holidays, it’s prudent to reflect on not just the future but the present as well. Living in the “now” can only help build a better future — every choice we make, every thought we possess and everything we do today paves the way for a brighter tomorrow. Playing on puns, the late American cartoonist Bil Keane once said, “yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” Profound much? The good news is the present is limitless and the future is now! What we see and experience daily in Second Life are the fruits of labor of talented designers and their hardworking teams. From avatar skin makers whom provide the finishing touches for the mesh body creators and the mesh apparel developers whom provide tool kits for texture geniuses, these are the folks whombring — to the creative table — so many exciting products that inspire the present and challenge the future. Project Bento by Linden Lab is an initiative that’s soon to be Second Life’s reality. An aim to reconstruct and improve the avatar’s skeleton, this innovative project will very much alter the future Second Life. Project Bento is also a reminder for us to embrace change, along with the advancement of today’s skill and technologies. Changes can be daunting and at times trying, but it is mostly good. It teaches us to think quicker on our feet and be fearless in living for the moment. On behalf of the Second U Magazine team, I wish all you readers, a bright future but an amazing and bountiful present. Happy Holidays and a brilliant New Year! Beloved Ruby Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Hey,

GOOD LOOKING Story & Photography: Beloved Ruby

YS&YS SKINS REJUVENATE YOUR AVATAR WITH A FRESH NEW LOOK — ALWAYS!

Beauty is skin deep, but your avatar’s appearance (read: Choice of skin) is equally important. Skins are after all the representation of your character’s good looks and finding the perfect one can be extremely daunting. With a variety of options in the market, it’s impossible to sample every thing, hence, picking out a go-to brand is the simplest and quickest option. Enter YS&YS, otherwise known as Your Skin & Your Shape — the avatar components store founded by Monicuzza Babenco. With skins available for popular mesh heads, such as Catwa, Lelutka, TMP and more, YS&YS boasts a beautiful range of lifelike skins that champion natural beauty. Packaged with a convenient and user-friendly HUD, the skin packs include brow and freckle customisation options plus eye makeup and lip colours, too. There are also skin appliers for leading mesh bodies with prices starting from L$300.

Story & Photography: Abbey Lucian

Chopping your hair off takes guts but — phew — that’s a decision you’ll need to only make in real life. In Second Life, the world is your oyster — fancy a shaggy bob today? Elikatira is your top choice. Want to grow it out by tomorrow into a wavy mop top? Choose the brand new unisex do at Baberyumyum. There’s so much to love about short hair in Second Life — just think about all the high mesh collars and hoodies you can wear now. Happiness is a new hairstyle, isn’t it?

FASHION’S LATEST REVOLUTION: TATTOOS REDEFINED AS SECOND SKIN ART. Story & Photograhy Beloved Ruby

Love or loathe them, tattoos have always ranked high as a fashion statement rather than a cultural one. As a matter of fact, tattoos are getting so popular in Second Life that more residents are now adopting the “second skin” as a unique form of styling expression and avatar quirk. As individualistic as tattoos are, they mark a person and not to mention, brand them for life. Meaning, Second Life is the next best and exciting option for those who do not dare get inked in real life. Sweet. The best part: You’ll never have to stick to only one design!

Thomaz Mulloy created his eponymous label two years ago but real-life put his plans on hold and the brand was only re-established earlier this year as an eyewear brand for discerning Second Life fashionisa.

Working as a team… Mulloy is a family of three: Myself being the owner and founder; Lana Delarge who helps with the advertising and Urie who’s in charge of management and brand identity.

A brand known for its modern-vintage designs, every pair of Mulloy sunglasses are extremely well made, and come with the convenience of an easy-to-use HUD, allowing its wearer to customize one style in a few fashionable ways. “I’ve found a niche within this category of accessories in Second Life. There isn’t really an eyewear brand that offers fashionable glasses with a high-quality and reasonable price,” explained Mulloy, the brand’s creator.

Being creative in SL… I’m always pushing the envelope on design as Mulloy’s goal is to bring a new style for its costumers — a style that you don’t find elsewhere. At the same time, I try to design fashionable accessories that fit both genders and offer a certain casual-luxe style. On being fashionably inspired… My inspiration to design came from the fact that I’m constantly trying to be as fashionable as possible. For me, personal style is something that can always be improved. I see fashion as an art and personal style being the blank canvas for presenting yourself in a way that you’d desire.

“I always try to also create new and unique designs that you don’t find anywhere else,” enthused the thoughtful and stylish designer who further shared style tips and future plans My personal style… My avatar’s style reflects for the chic and accessible brand. the Mulloy brand. I’m constantly trying to be as stylish as possible because I believe there’s Second U Magazine speaks to Thomaz Mulloy a relation between the image of the owner and for more insights on the brand’s future. their brand. Eyewear as the brand’s current focus… Right now, my team and I are focused on giving our best to developing and establishing a good brand identity. We feel this is essential for any high-fashion house to succeed.

Other pursuits of happiness… I try to take photos in SL when I find the spare time. I’ve dedicated myself to learn different techniques in Photoshop that I can apply to my work and the brand’s development.

On brand expansion… In late 2017, Mulloy will open its doors to different categories, such as clothing… It takes time and effort to make high quality clothing but when we launch, I’m sure that I will be developing collections for both genders and following with the same method as the brand does right now. SPECIAL FEATURE

Photography BELOVED RUBY

Daring to be different yields good design. The acclaimed French couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier once said, “Non-conformist designers seek unusual models — the conventionally pretty need not apply.” The AZOURY team is best described as non-conformists. Thinking out the box since 2009, Mayhem and Aniki Seetan have raised the bar on avant-garde designs in Second Life, proving that anything (and everything) is possible, just as long as you dream it, you’ll get it. It has however, not been an easy road for the French creators who have learnt to overcome criticisms for their outré designs. In doing what they strongly believe 138 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

in and love, the artistic duo have enjoyed the rewards of gaining loyal customers in the process — a priceless gift for any artist who champions everything but the norm. Second U Magazine chats with Mayhem and Aniki Seetan on their views on original design and how art imitates fashion and vice versa. On the driving inspiration behind the brand… Being revolutionary despite being a minority, we challenged ourselves to stand out by producing original products, which we did not see everywhere in Second Life. The typical AZOURY customer… They are definitely folks with a very different sensibilty. We believe they are more like artists who might be in a world of their own but one with discerning tastes. The creative process… We find inspiration in the unconventional by always looking for “something else”. Our creations are largely attributed to how we feel and perceive things as they are, or should be. Words to describe the brand’s DNA… “Intriguing” and ‘audacious’ because our brand offers peerless design with a brave and different point of view. It is also what identifies the brand. What Second Life residents really think of AZOURY…

We find the opinions to be mixed. We were criticized by some individuals when we created Ballet Heels Shoe. However, there were others who loved them and still continue to support us and love our style. The most inspiring creation… We can’t choose. All our creations are equally inspiring for us. Fashion as art… Yes, the perception of our products as works of art has always been evident in photographs shot by residents, as well as in their reviews. Taking part in shopping events… We currently participate in many events from The Chapter Four to We <3 Roleplay, Shiny Shabby, The Liaison Collaborative, Crossroads, The Forest and at times, Collabor88, SaNaRae, Men Only Monthly and Cosmopolitan. On the biggest obstacle… Competing with new “designers” who have no knowledge of 3D tools (Eg: Construction, texturing and photography) but pay professional graphic designers to do the work for them and later be given the chance to participate in major events that are really meant for real designers or graphic artists. We have learnt that sadly, it’s all about having connections — to be a “friend of” someone in high places before you get the opportunity or slightest chance to be invited to participate and sponsor certain events.

Views on Project Bento and Project Sansar… We are not sure about Project Bento yet but we will certainly take advantage of the new additions that Linden Lab is introducing to Second Life avatars and create products to suit it. However, we are thrilled about Project Sansar because it will be a greater change than Project Bento. On avant-garde styles and 2017 trends… This goes against the grain of our creative mindset because we are not really interested in trends.

WINNER TAKES IT ALL Did you know: AZOURY has a monthly event for its customers to win prizes in a lucky draw? tunes and entertaining SL party crowds for more than three straight hours. Adept with the art of twisting sound knobs, dancing with a headset on and typing into a live chat to communicate with an audience all at once, Max also has an addictive personality that can rival the upbeat tempo of his music repertoire.

Max’s relationship with music started with playing the accordion. At just 7 years old, he was so good at it that he even surpassed the level of his peers. During his teenage years, Max dabbled in sports but did not give up his love for music. He tried his hand at being a music producer but the impatient perfectionist in him held him back. “I was never pleased with my work, so I’d listen to something I made over and over, and after about a thousand listens, I’d give up because I either didn’t have the patience to complete it or would switch my focus on to another project,” he admitted in retrospect. It was around this time that Max accepted a real life job offer that would widen his audience reach; however, it was Second Life where Max found his niche. “I saw the art of live-mixing as the next step in my natural progression,” mused Max. “Second Life happened to be a great medium for me to practice on, as well as to see how people would react to my craft and it turned out to be great!” Searching for alternatives, he found Twitch — a streaming portal for gamers and artists, and that was a game changer.

I DON’T WANNA STOP! Max’s musical influences were, in his own words, “all over the place,” until he discovered the Exit Festival in 2006: “I listened to live sets by David Guetta and Eric Prydz and discovered that the right

track at the right moment can wash over you with an immense energy and feeling of well-being — as if nothing else mattered… And just when you thought these emotions have reached their peak, they’d play a new track, keeping the momentum on the same level and then, boom — the track after that raises the bar even higher. Ten years on, even though Electronic Dance Music has evolved, I still look up to these sets.” Second Life became a radical stimulus for Max’s spinning skills. “I came across some of the popular clubs Inworld and liked the idea that I could hone my skills online while getting feedback from a live crowd in Second Life. I wasn’t equipped with the hardware to do a live mix but I downloaded Traktor and used “sync” to mix along with my vast music knowledge. The [Second Life] residents loved it! They wanted more… So much more!... I discovered a complete pleasure in doing something for myself that also impacted the lives of other people by lifting their moods,” Max reminisced. Always a positive force and fowardthinking guy, Max came up with the idea of live mixing and streaming because of the growth in trend with Second Life clubs. “Outside of certain events, I felt like this meta became somewhat stale... So I came up with the idea to stream on Twitch simultaneously, but in a way that it doesn’t go against its Terms and Conditions and hoped that this was the step that would take the live mix entertainment on SL a step further… I want to feel like I’m contributing to positive changes that need to happen in ISSUE 2 - DEC 2016 | 155

FUTURE

THE RELEASE OF PROJECT BENTO WILL SEE PHENOMENAL CHANGES IN SECOND LIFE, ONE OF THEM BEING VISTA ANIMATION’S BENTO PRO HANDS. Story & Photograhy Beloved Ruby

Project Bento is set to change the game — literally. Touted as the most revolutionary offering since mesh, the Bento program is part of Linden Lab’s initiative to update Second Life avatar skeletons with additional and better functioning bones from head-to-toe. This new wave of avatar engineering has grabbed the attention of insightful content creators, one of whom is Vista Animation’s founder/creator, Vista Barnes. A Second Life household name in animation overriders (AOs), Barnes founded his company, Vista Animations, in 2007. “I was looking for good animations and poses for myself. Since I could not find anything I liked, I decided to create my own,” said the veteran resident of nearly 10 years. “Once, I had one for men, I decided to create [AOs] for some of my female friends. Finally, I decided to open a small shop to see if they’d sell.” ISSUE 2 - DEC 2016 | 159

Avatar AOs are best described as the body language of each Second Life resident. The way a burly man stands, the allure of sexy girl’s saunter, the innocence in a child’s delightful tumbles… As the saying goes, “action speaks louder than words.” An AO is but every avatar’s character trait — if you will. HANDS DOWN, THE NEXT BIG THING Upping the ante is Barnes’ Bento-animated hands. Called the Vista Bento Pro Hands – Female (L$999), these high-quality mesh animated hands are now available at the brand’s Inworld store and Marketplace (Demos at L$1 can also be picked up at these two locations). Currently in its Beta 2 phase, the hands are compatible with Linden Lab’s Bento Release Candidate viewer and Phoenix-Firestrom, a third party viewer set to soon release its own Bento compatible viewer. 160 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

Second U speaks to Vista Barnes on embracing change, challenges and news on what male avatars can look out for. First impressions on Project Bento… Creating animations involving finger movements came to mind. We used to tell our motion capture models (Vista Animations uses the movements of human models to recreate avatar animations) not to use their fingers since they weren’t visible [relevant to the game] but now that’s finally changing. The demands of perfection… This project gave us much more work than anyone expected. It’s been a pain because the way the bones are aligned with the new Bento skeleton — it makes it difficult in finding an ideal workflow for mocap data. But we’ve managed to solve that by doing a lot of research. We’ve been working nearly full-time since June on this and we’ve also decided to create our own hands in order to produce Bento AOs. We made this decision because we weren’t sure how long [it would take for] mesh body creators to make it available themselves.”

The release of the male equivalent… The first beta for the Male Bento Pro Hands will probably be released in December. The problem with the male [hands] is that there isn’t an existing standard — everybody uses a different one. Last word on the future of Bento animations… We will keep developing our hands and our animations. We expect the results to be incredible. In my opinion, non-Bento animations will begin to look like something of the past! Download Second Life’s Project Bento Release Candidate For Firestorm’s Bento viewer, joining the official Firestorm Pre-Release testers group by searching Phoenix-Firestorm Preview group.

On offerings for fantasy role-players… Animating tails and wings is something that’s definitely on our minds — for sure! The first female full-body AO with finger animations… This should roll out by Christmas. With the introduction of the new bones, the work on each animation has increased by 50%. Hence, it will take more time [to complete each project].

SPECIAL FEATURE

The future is now — with Project Bento Story & Photography by Beloved Ruby With the upcoming release of Project Bento, Second Life users will soon be enjoying a more advanced and realistic gaming experience. Spearheaded by Linden Lab, the goal of Project Bento is to support (and champion) the aesthetics of Second Life avatars. In technical terms, this refers to enhancing the movement of body animations — a feat that requires better functioning joints on the avatar bone system. To do this, Project Bento has already revealed that it will introduce a new and improved avatar’s skeleton: 11 extra limb bones for seamless movements in wings, or, extra arm and legs attachments; six tail bones for adding life to a tail attachment; 30 bones for hands and all fingers; two additional bones for twitching of ears or antennae; and 13 more attachment points that aid the overall functioning of these new bones.

BUT THERE’S A CATCH… Project Bento cannot be experienced without a Bento-enabled viewer. At present, the only available viewer is a Release Candidate created by Linden Lab, which the company offers to all for testing and building. Jumping on the bandwagon is Firestorm, one of Second Life’s more popular viewers for the past 6 years and now paving the way for other third party viewers to follow suite. 162 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

Despite the advanced improvements, Firestorm will maintain its design interface and user-friendliness. Second U Magazine speaks with Jessica Lyon, Firestorm’s Project Manager, to find out more. What are your thoughts on Project Bento and how it may affect Firestorm? Does it pose a huge responsibility on your team to deliver, “the magic”? Bento is going to bring a whole new realm of possibilities within avatar creation… And we’re all very excited about it. But it doesn’t change anything for Firestorm directly. Our viewer will have the capability like all other active third party Viewers will. From a development standpoint, we realized that something this significant may pose a code merge challenge for us, but no different than most large code drops from Linden Lab (LL). Getting the update out in a timely fashion, however, has always been the challenge. We are going to try very hard to get Bento out in Firestorm as early as possible after LL officially releases it… As soon as the LL code is publicly available, Ansariel Hiller, who is one of our lead developers, begins merging the LL code into Firestorm’s repository. Bento comes with a lot of value to the end user, but it represents another day in the office for us — code-wise.” ISSUE 2 - DEC 2016 | 163

Once all the necessary changes were identified, what was the biggest challenge and how did Firestorm approached it? Merging Bento into Firestorm wasn’t any more difficult than most of the other changes LL made. Other changes in the past took a much larger effort, for instance, the changes to the Inventory system or the update of the development tools. But the biggest challenge is the integration with optional legacy features in Firestorm that are not present in the LL viewer anymore. For Bento, this was the integration in the classic pie menu. As you may already know, Bento will add 15 additional attachment spots, which LL has grouped into their menus. However, the pie menu has only 8 slices and it was pretty much occupied before the introduction of the additional attachment spots. So it took quite some time and 164 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

planning, drawing sketches to go about envisioning how to integrate them into a useful and logical manner. The latter eventually took more time than merging the code from LL. And the most rewarding aspect? For many of us, issuing viewer updates is kind of like being a parent at Christmas. We enjoy giving and especially enjoy the positive reaction from our users at releases. We hope this release will be a good one. Have there been other collaborations between Project Bento and Firestorm developers? Linden Lab has really picked up the ball since Ebbe Linden came in and began working a lot closer with the community. The Viewer Managed Marketplace feature is a good example where Linden met with the community several times throughout the development phase of that feature and, as a result, it produced a good feature! Bento has been perhaps the ultimate of collaborations. Linden had regular meetings with the community and opened the discussion to all who are interested during this process. As a result, a good selection of community leaders and avatar creators have attended and provided feedback. LL has listened, and this really has been an equal and open effort, to make Bento as good as it can be. We have had a few of our team involved in those meetings too.

I do most of the code merges and a lot of the code work for Firestorm. during the past year, I’ve also been working on integrating Bento into Firestorm. This includes merging Linden Lab codes, as well as tying the new features to Firestorm’s functions and the already existing feature set… While Bento will add great benefits for residents, the feature itself didn’t — from a developer’s standpoint — have much impact on the codebase. Preparing Firestorm for Bento took less effort than other previous changes made by Linden Lab.

SPECIAL FEATURE Who are the people in charge at Firestorm’s development team? What we do cannot be tied to just one department, or especially one person. Firestorm has several “sub” teams that all work together. There are over 80 people on the team all together not counting our beta testers. While technically I am in charge of the project, none of what we do could be done without each and every person on the team. Any credit should be directed at the team on the whole and not to any individual person. When will Firestorm release the Bento-compatible viewer? It is impossible to provide a date on something like this; especially given that LL does not have a release date established… My hope is that we release it within a few weeks after LL does. We may offer a public beta in order to get it out even sooner but this hasn’t been decided yet. What are your thoughts on users that may not be willing to convert to the Bento compatible Firestorm viewers? Firestorm is all about options and as such, we do not believe in forcing people into doing anything. Although we do have to initiate viewer blocks, it is also something we do not enjoy doing… Eventually, everyone on Firestorm will have to upgrade to a Bento-Firestorm viewer… We certainly do hope that everyone adopts 166 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

it for the sake of immersion. Will the most current viewer remain available throughout the transition or will it be phased out after the release of the Bento compatible viewer? We have a 3-version rule, which means we keep available the last 3 official releases of the Firestorm viewers. We still only provide support to the current release, though. We average a new release around every 3-4 months so within a year, there will only be available Firestorm binaries that support Bento. How has the community taken part in aiding Firestorm with the new changes? Was an external beta voluntary group set in place to identify bugs and glitches? We currently have a Bento build in our Beta Testers group and expect to give them another soon with some slight updates from LL. Once LL releases Project Bento, we will probably release that build to our “preview testers” group. This is an open group that anyone can join to receive release candidates of Firestorm prior to its official release. What has Firestorm offered to content creators who are actively preparing for the changes ahead? We have provided some very early alpha builds to those who have contacted us directly to request them. However, we cannot provide any support for it and the

binary we give is essentially a “work-in-progress”. What measures are you planning in terms of user-support after the Bento compatible viewer is released? We’ve not taken any measures with that, and probably won’t. We provide classes on how to use the viewer and we have Wiki links to helpful tips and troubleshooting guides. We also have a dedicated team of volunteers who offer live support. But Bento is a Linden feature about avatar creation. We do not create avatars, therefore, we have no place in teaching residents or content creators to use Bento. There will surely be Inworld groups among content creators whom folks can go to for assistance. There will hopefully be a Linden Wiki available as well. The viewer will render Bento avatars normally, and that’s where the bulk of users will benefit from it.

From the user’s end, what kind of demands or computer requirements will the new viewer pose? More powerful processors, graphics cards, perhaps? Anytime there is a graphical change as significant as this, it will inevitably put higher demands on GPUs and CPUs though initial testing indicated the impact of Bento isn’t dramatic and in some cases not even noticeable. It may be worth noting that LL’s Jelly Dolls feature, which allows users to control what avatars render and do not render, is based on the “complexity” that was released ahead of Bento. This is likely as a way to offset the GPU impact for users on low-end systems.

REAL LIFE/SECOND LIFE COUPLE, WINTER THORN AND FRANKLEE ANATRA, INFUSE INSPIRATIONS FROM THEIR CULTURAL BACKGROUND WITH THE WORK THEY PRODUCE FOR WHAT NEXT. Story & Photograhy Beloved Ruby

The beauty of What Next, one of Second Life’s leading home and furnishing stores, is the realism of its creations. Set up in 2009 by Winter Thorn and FrankLee Anatra, many of What Next’s products are reminiscent of the cozy comforts found in real life: A cup of piping hot cocoa, a dish of country-baked apple pie, grandma’s sturdy rocking chair, a young lady’s pretty vanity table... 190 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

pieces built, we rented the parcel next door to the cafe and built the first store,” recalled Thorn. As to how the duo came up with their brand name? Thorn enthused: “Knowing that I change my mind frequently and start new projects before finishing the old one, I chose a [neutral] name that would work for whatever product type we create.” TRUE TO LIFE Originally from England and now married to Anatra, and living in California, Thorn frequently incorporates her cultural background and experiences into all of What Next creations, and FrankLee does the same, too. “Our work reflects the mix of both our cultures: I grew up by the sea so I adore beach huts and everything coastal. Frank grew up in sunny California,” Thorn shared. “The store’s sim reflects both our cultures with the UK-inspired beach huts, cute caravans and a pretty green garden plot, but you’ll also find a mini pine forest with a camping and picnic area plus a rustic cabin, inspired by the real life Californian mountains we live on,” added Thorn. The brand started as a small building project between the couple when they were in a long distance relationship in real life — Thorn was living in Canada, while Anatra in California. “FrankLee built a European style cafe and I built a very wonky art gallery next door to it. It was a happy place for hanging out and building together. FrankLee was already an experienced builder and I persuaded him to teach me and once we had a few

The mix in cultures has become inspirational to both. “The way we work varies with each project or its piece. Sometimes we’ll design a product in isolation, while other times we’d share a project and both model for it from start to finish. FrankLee will occasionally model and I’ll texture the final piece,” admitted Thorn who further mused that What Next’s product range often reflects the couples’ “hodgepodge work processes”. Case in point: ISSUE 2 - DEC 2016 | 191

Second U Magazine speaks to the dynamic duo to find out more.

On working with mesh…

On project ideas… [FrankLee Anatra] When we make items that recall real life things it’s because they please us in both form and function. That means, if we see something that inspires us both, we don’t just want to recreate it and share it, but we also want to add something of ourselves (from our real lives) into the creative process, too. When we make fantasy-inspired items it simply comes down to a certain idea that will make us smile or laugh. The test is this: If we like it maybe others will. [Winter Thorn] I really enjoy the changing of seasons and I get excited… Especially for fall and winter-inspired products as that’s a huge inspiration. On personal aesthetics… [FA] Honesty. If we don’t love the project/product, we don’t start it. [WT] Homely, cozy and happy. Many of our products are created to add a ‘lived-in’ touch of a home. I think that’s why I love the food and drink products so much. I use the word “happy” (to describe my style) because I tend to use more colours in designing 3D decor than 192 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

[FA] Between geometric primitives and mesh there was the sculpted prim. We were mostly sculpt-y creators. From a modeler’s standpoint, it was liberating to transition into mesh. Sculpt-y modeling was a challenge that had as much frustration as it did satisfaction. On what keeps What Next going… [FA] We’ve not stopped challenging ourselves. [WT] Brainstorming together on what to make next and how to make it. Also, gathering research, sketching out or writing down ideas; taking photos and finding photos/pictures that inspire us. Like a lot of other designers, I’m a Pinterest junkie. It’s an amazing tool for sharing and collecting photos or creating mood boards. On refining design ideas… [WT] We’re both gamers and as a result we love products that are fun and functional. Now and again, this inspires us to try something different like the wearables (Add-on items) for The Arcade. [FA] With every project we’d ask ourselves first what would be fun or enjoyable to

have in our SL experience.

of making it.

On the Dos and Don’ts of creating buildings …

[WT] I agree with Frank. We’ve been extremely lucky to have such a wonderful and supportive customer base. Although we make products according to what we’d love to see Inworld, we never lost track of creating with our customers in mind.

[WT] We never rule anything out! The downside of what we do is we always have far more ideas than time to implement them. On the actual creative process… [FA] This is a tough one. Sometimes we might experience a hassle during a phase of a project, but then that same phase is completely rewarding and enjoyable with a different project. Each creation is exciting once we have “released it into the wild”.

On what it takes to be unique… [WT] I know many creators in our field that work as couple/team as we do. Coming from two different countries/backgrounds helps to perhaps make a difference. We work in the same house now but for many years we worked together, but remotely. On the story of success…

[WT] I believe it’s a combination of a few factors. We release new products fairly [FA] Every piece is personal, and also you regularly and are lucky to have built up a need to take an open approach when supportive customer base, through the combining two creators’ visions. Inworld group and social media. We’re very fortunate to have been invited to many [WT] It plays a large part. It’s easy to be awesome events over the years, which have motivated when it’s something you can’t helped (propel) our brand, such as wait to see come to life. Sometimes it’s Collabor88 and The Arcade. We owe much driven by a desire to create something that to the hard work of all the event challenges you, such as many of the organizers — they don’t get enough praise wearable vehicles, which were quite a for what they do. Lastly, the passion we challenge for us. have, which keeps us creating constantly. On working together seamlessly…

On values and ethics…

On the most memorable product/project…

[FA] As I’ve said before: Honesty. Our hope that people will see in the end product that not only do we love what we make, but that we also enjoy the process

[FA] Each project betters itself from the last. What’s personally significant is that we challenge ourselves, while trying to impress each other at the same time. ISSUE 2 - DEC 2016 | 193

IT ONLY FEELS LIKE HOME IF THERE’S A PERSONAL TOUCH. AT CHEZ MOI FURNITURES, CREATOR NANDA MARJETA HAS THIS SORTED DOWN PAT. Story by Beloved Ruby Photography by Dean Joe & Beloved Ruby

210 | SECOND U MAGAZINE

Quality and interactive animations that come with the furniture pieces have always defined the brand. Creator Marjeta takes into consideration interactive HUDs/ menus that provide activities, which reflect the ones we would do in our real life — think the new Xmas Wrap Station Booth, a quaint little wooden stand for outdoor gift-wrapping services. Not only does it allow your avatar to get busy with wrapping Christmas presents, you can kiss and cuddle your other half when all the work’s done. Chez Moi Furnitures started as a creative outlet for Nanda Marjeta, the brand’s owner. It represented a way in which she could express herself through making small things for her own virtual home. “As time passed, people started to hire me to build custom homes and decorate their places. I felt so happy and accomplished that I decided to take it more seriously,” Marjeta adds.

Photography DEAN JOE

Since 2008, Chez Moi Furnitures has been delivering functional home and garden pieces that combine modern elegance with quirky designs. Be it transforming a country home into a modern-style bachelor’s pad or updating a tropical garden to include an outdoor spa-inspired shower, Chez Moi has it all (and more).

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Marjeta now lives in Ontario, Canada. Meaning, she has two very different worlds to draw inspiration from. This is evident in her contemporary, colorful designs and eternally classic ones, too. A lot of research is devoted to each piece that Marjeta creates. “I get all the catalogs from the big real life stores like Ikea, Target, Crate and Barrel, to understand the trends. I then start to draw what I want to build,” the hardworking designer quips.

ISSUE 2 - DEC 2016 | 211

HOME & GARDEN Marjeta enjoys the whole creative process and muses, “when one project ends, I start another. It’s always a new challenge for me with new excitement to look forward to.” Indeed creating quality designs require discipline and motivation. And, it also requires listening to what customers want, too. “I study new techniques and software that can improve quality, but most importantly, I listen to what customers have to say. Feedback is a proven powerful tool.” Marjeta insists. Feedback have sometimes come in the form of a criticism, however, Marjeta takes this in her stride by putting herself in the shoes of a customer. “Criticism is a good tool to improve my work. Even if I don’t always agree, I’ll pay attention to see if there are others with the same opinion…” At present, Chez Moi participates actively in a variety of monthly events from Trés Chic to The Chapter Four and The Gacha Garden, just to name a few. To keep up with the workload, Marjeta explains that time management is key in not just completing projects but to also attain goals: “Start writing your priorities and make a strict timeline for each task. Making use of the ‘Busy Mode’ (for Inworld Instant Messages) is great because it keeps you centered on your project. Once finished, one can answer friends and customers because Instant Messages can be a huge distraction.”

I LOVE TO CREATE ROMANTIC FURNITURE FOR COUPLES. I REALLY HAVE FUN DOING THAT. – Nanda Marjeta

Although Marjeta takes her work in Second Life seriously, she sees the enjoyable and relaxing side to the game, believing that, “when you do something that you enjoy and have fun with most of the time, you are on the right path.” Available now: Chez Moi Furnitures Christmas Gift Cards. Choose from 6 options (L$100, L$250, L$500, L$1000, L$2500 and L$5000). All gift cards are transferable and do not expire.

Open SEASON EVERYWHERE YOU GO, THE TRACE TAKES THE WEATHER WITH YOU. Story by Abbey Lucian Photography by Beloved Ruby

Photography BELOVED ISSUE 2 - DEC 2016 |RUBY 229

DISCOVER SL Kylie Jaxxon and Elvira Kytori are a sim-design dream team. In 2014, the two co-designed The Trace, a climate-concept sim founded by Jaxxon — a year before Kytori, the owner and creator of White Dunes Estate Rentals joined.

Kytori’s brief haitus from SL earlier this year saw changes to The Trace and what was once a one-season (Summer) sim spawned into three beautiful sims, each with a different season that was designed to last a whole year through. The original Summer Trace was left untouched during Kytori’s absence, but the newly designed Winter Trace sees the amazing duo make a comeback and piecing together a superb winter wonderland that boasts the austerity of abandoned churches and creaking windmill towers. The Fall Trace, on the other hand, was designed by Kytori and mimics the quiet appeal of a bucolic bayou — charming. In this issue, Second U Magazine puts the spotlight on Winter Trace, a snow-covered backcountry with forest plains and the odd isolated property — a quaint grey-stone house by the lake. There are sleighs for exploring the vast lands and forest clearings, making this magical sim an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts, or for that matter, “a place that gives the introvert some breathing space,” enthused Mad Pugilist, a self-confessed zombie girl we found lurking in the woods and then later staring into the frozen lake. DISCOVER THE BREATHTAKING BEAUTY OF WINTER LANDSCAPES IN SECOND LIFE. THEY WILL INNEBITABLY WARM YOUR HEART. Story & Photography by Lam Erin

It’s winter time in SL and talented sim designers have been at work to offer exceptional sim creations of incredible natural beauty. I have selected to showcase winter Rosemoor and winter Maison de L’amitie. Both locations have achieved extraordinary beauty, as expected from their notable designers. Creators of the Kaleidoscope and Just another Tequila Sunrise, Krys Vita and Arol Lightfoot, are well known for their remarkable designing skills. The summer version of Rosemoor, a very beautiful summer environment, was very popular and a great hangout for guests and bloggers. The winter version, with a rural theme, is of equal beauty. Highlights of the sim include the barn located close to the landing point, the beautiful chapel with the red roof, and the farmhouse. The windlight captures the spirit of winter and, the overall effect is very pleasing to the eye.

Winter Maison de L’amitie, was created by Corina Wonder (owner of Cosmopolitan events) and Kirra Frantic. While this destination has been around for a while, it is a recent discovery for me. I visited the sim for the first time during autumn and was impressed by their excellent work. The winter theme is equally beautiful, combining a town-country theme with a small railway station in the center. The overall setting of the buildings and the surrounding nature, create a peaceful winter scene attractive to the eye for every visitor. Beyond these two locations, there are many other beautiful winter sims available for SL residents to visit. I would advise not to miss the opportunity to take some great winter pictures. After all, the spirit of Christmas prefers white natural landscapes, filled with Christmas trees, reindeers, and nativity scenes.

At Second U Magazine, we believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that beholder is: You. We’re championing and — but, of course — celebrating the many talented bloggers, graphic designers, Flickr enthusiasts whom have all inspired us. Documenting the virtual world through their eyes on a digital platform, we’ve been living vicariously through them and in turn inspired others to live vicariously via the beauty of this Arcadia we call Second Life. Story & Photography by Abbey Lucian

I like to dress in things that make me feel like I’m expressing myself in a creative way. Putting together a look is all about having fun. I like to wear things that will combine cuteness with darkness. Opposites and change attract me. I love every kind of darker-themed events and stores but any kind of store or item that will show innovative design is my fave! SL style for me is more about wearing what you can’t necessarily wear in real life. For example: Dismembered witch hands, metal spine spikes or a halo of splintered wooden crosses. Spotted at Cala Galadhon’s 2016 Holiday Sim War aka Warbunnyam, 3 years, 11 months.

I have a very distinct and personalized style and that’s why people love my personality (laughs). I really like the style of grunge — I really am in love with grunge music too. Sometimes, I mix grunge with classic styles, or retro-inspired fashion with the modern. I like to look different and be out of a comfort zone, such as looking too safe or where everyone appears the same and look so common. Some of the events I frequent are TMD, Kustom9, MOM and I like Tres Chic, too! Spotted at L’Etre and DOUX: Urie aka Xurielavignex Resident, 1 year, 8 months.
