Editor’s note “To see things in the seed, that is genius,” said the Father of Taoism, Lao Tzu. To me, this seed is — but, of course — an idea, a dream, or even a new beginning… It is also where everything germinates with passion and then propels you to the next step: A plan of action.
But to dream is to also to believe because the importance of dreams is that they are in themselves the concept of a seed. Inspiration allows you to create and attain goals while offering an insight into championing your ideas with a personal touch. In our first issue of Second U Magazine, we feature creators who dared to dream and believe that everything is possible in Second Life. By taking fresh ideas and putting them to work, they have achieved amazing results and what was, perhaps, once beyond their imagination. Each and every one of them have shared with us their determination and in watching their budding seeds grow. “In the begining [ kunst] started out as modern office furniture store inspired by the Bauhaus style.” Kunst Himmel reminisced. “However, at the time, Second Life was an attractive place for real life companies to hold meetings with employees around the world, and I saw the opportunity to meet their needs with my products.” The possibility of impossibility had no existence in their imagination. The same is true for Second U Magazine. I had an idea and roped in the creative minds I’ve found whom also believed in my “original seed”. We are very proud of our first edition and can only anticipate bigger and better things to come. This is only our first step and yours, too. Only because Second U Magazine is really about YOU, our readers, and we invite you to join us on this incredible ride. But for now, we challenge you to dream and — always — dream big because dreams do come true! Beloved Ruby Editor-in-Chief/Publisher

DEDICATION
to detail.
Story & Photography by Beloved Ruby THE ANNEX founder started her three year old label when she couldn’t find clothes that she liked. Mesh was relatively new in Second Life at this time but the lure of creating a personal design and starting a store was too good to resist. Today, The Annex is a successful Second Life label that caters to more than its founder’s personal tastes but also the demands of its consumers, too. These include specialized designs from role-play/fantasy fashion to casual everyday wear and high fashion looks, which are released at key events that promote such stylistic themes.

Old-world fashion is The Annex’s current focus: “I would like to create more styles that are influenced by fashion history. I have a love for vintage fashion as you can see from some of the recent releases but I would like to find time to concentrate on store releases more, not just event ones,” cited the brand’s founder. Relooking Group Gifts are some of the perks for Inworld group members as well. “Plans include additional bonuses…,” announced The Annex. At present, The Annex Lucky Board Group Gifts (for group members only) are the seductive and ultra-feminine Mistie Mifit and Desiree corsets. Fashioned with a Baroque-style velvet texture, the topless mesh corsets are beautifully detailed with a sexy backlace — hot! TP below to grab yours. Group joining fee: L$100

Being a curvy avatar can require creativity and a skill in editing, and but, of course, trying a lot of demos. To my delight recently, there has been an increase in perfectly-rigged and stylized clothing (and accessories) that are catered for bustier ladies and more muscular gentlemen. This is a revolution in fashion for Second Life. Men and women of all shapes and sizes can enjoy the same fashion – Finally! I applaud all the amazing creators and talented people for making this possible. I also hope that mesh body creators would make their builder kits readily available for all up and coming creative talents. This will further improve, as well as expand the fashion revolution that’s happening in Second Life fashion now. A good example is Maitreya’s recent release of its builder kits in Second Life — I can’t wait to see what creators are going to do with them!
MY LOOK, MY STYLE I have quite a few favorites (creators) from whom I buy and almost regularly — if I may add. I won’t be surprised if I own everything they make. Vale Koer… Is absolutely my favorite creator for shoes. They also produce amazing original clothing and accessories, preferring sneakers, boots, and flat-form casual footwear to heels. Everything they produce is original and perfectly rigged, textured with expertise and totally badass. It is simply worth every cent as they are my most regularly used footwear in Second Life. You will not be disappointed.
a lot of clothing without having them “poke through” over a separate layer of mesh! This is an amazing thing for anyone who likes to mix and match/layer everything.
OTHER NAMES TO WATCH OUT FOR… SYS, E-clipes/ED and Tres Blah… I do blog for E-clipes/ED. But, I would never blog something I wouldn’t actually buy. Ever. I really appreciate the styling they both put into their work with denims, cottons and layering. I live for accessories! They make an outfit come to life. Plus, being busty, they are easier for me to fit into but not with necklaces — sometimes (laughs). Face it: Necklaces in SL are not large breasts-friendly — yet! Bamse… Best for inexpensive badass gear, such as gucns, gasmasks, jet packs. Anyone that follows me on my Flickr will know I like guns — a lot...And tend to use them as accessories in my photos. Remarkable Oblivion… This is another creator I favor. I love the rusty-old/beat-up steam-punk style they use for many of their items. In fact, remarkable is a word I’d would use to describe them too! Each piece is a work of art in itself. NIK (Nikotin)… Is a really obvious choice as they are the markers of the trademark cigar in just about every picture I do. You can completely customize your cigars and cigarettes exactly the way you’d like them, which I love!
Flite… Comes in a close second, especially for their casual wear: The Joggers and accessories. I really, really just love my kicks though.
Tableau Vivant… Keeps my brain warm and is one of my go-to hairstyles of late. It’s big and vivacious and have beautiful colors and highlight options.
Addams… Is a really great store — they include a customizing HUD, which are not as extensive as fat packs, but heck! It’s just pretty damn sweet to have the ability to personalize a single item purchase.
EMO-tions… Makes amazing hair, too. I’m very attracted to big voluminous hairdos and they do them really well.
Tetra… This has recently become a favorite of mine. The cotton and wool textures rendered are perfect. Not to mention, their bras and undies are so perfectly rigged — I can wear them underneath 72 | 2ND U MAGAZINE
On tattoos… They are my second skin and I have tried something from pretty much every creator. The four I use the most are: Prodigy Ink (I blog for them now but purchased on my own initially); Bolson, Speakeasy and other more unknown and under the VOL I - SEPT 2016

radar labels like T’ink — a very girly, very pink, and super awesome brand. I’ve purchased almost everything ever created by them. LOL. If you are a girlie-girl and wanna try a tattoo, think T’ink (literally!) because you’ll love their tatts. Prodigy Ink and Bolson are both well known for non-color, classic-style tattoos with a beautiful clarity. Each of their tattoos seem to tell a story, or have some kind of statement woven throughout its art — an appeal I think is pretty, damn cool. For me, Speakeasy is all about the colors. They make amazing colored tatts and also make limited edition tattoos, which you can purchase while stocks last!

SKIN DEEP
THE WOMAN AND MAN THAT CHOOSE ESSENCES SKINS IS CONFIDENT AND OPEN-MINDED.
— Mr. Lambert
Story & Photography Beloved Ruby
By definition, essence can represent a few things from the core to the heart, ethos, spirit... But it is also what lends a subject or an individual its soul/ unique character. The same could be said of Mr. Lambert, founder and creator of Essences Skins. Mr Lambert’s attention to skin textures are — without a doubt — exquisite and comparable to that of a proficient fine art painter. His keen eye for beauty extends to more than just facial features alone — Mr Lambert is a perfectionist and prefers to tackle the whole nine yards: Realistic skin appliers, skin tones and all sundry. Established in 2009, Essences started as a small project that came with blood, sweet and tears, and not to mention work stress, sleepless nights, “and a lot of coffee — why not?” mused Mr.Lambert. “The brand was created with the help of my partner at the time, Metal Xaron, whose patience and support throughout was very important to me,” he shared and then regretfully admitted: “Unfortunately, we are no longer associated.”
Despite being a one-man show today, Mr Lambert continues to thrive on perfecting his craft, that is his dedication to creating exceptional skins rather that fuss with bells and whistles better described as, “the robotic work of packaging products or creating huds.” Said the astute skinsman, “I think the most exciting and beautiful thing happens when you discover new features, characters and personalities during the creative process [because it is these elements] that bring them [the skins] to life,” he further enthused. The future of Essences Skins is a bright one: There will be a wider range of skins for both classic/default avatars, in addition to head appliers for both genders and the ones that work with the Omega system, too. There will also be creations of androgynous skins and its appliers — a market that SL skin-makers rarely delve into. We can’t wait!

LARA, MAITREYA’S MESH BODY, IS PROBABLY THE MOST POPULAR SECOND LIFE FEMALE MESH BODIES. EVERY DAY, THE MESH BODY REVOLUTION IN SL PICKS UP AND MORE PEOPLE BEGIN THE INITIALLY DAUNTING TRANSITION FROM SWITCHING A CLASSIC AVATAR BODY TO A STATE-OF-THE-ART MESH OPTION. WE SPOKE TO A FEW WOMEN ON WHY THE LARA MESH BODY IS SO COVETED OR FOR THAT MATTER, EVERY FASHIONABLE GIRL’S INVENTORY MUST-HAVE. “I love this mesh body over others because honestly it is the most versatile with shape making compared to others, it allows me to be flexible with many fantasy characters I make, It has also become the standard for most widely used mesh body thus having more options out there for rigged clothing and items tailored specifically to this mesh body, and the mod creation via appliers and tats make it irresistible.” — Ayresian Pearl
“I chose the maitreya body , because I personally liked the look of it better than the others. I like to have curves , especially in the back area, and to me , Maitreya has the best bum shape. Also I have been wearing Glam Affair skins since before the body came out . Maitreya’s skin presets are Glam Affair , so it worked perfect . The hud for Lara was also the best that I had seen. Very easy to navigate with pretty good alpha cuts as well. I actually also like the Maitreya hands and feet… They seem to fit my likings better. I have had n0 issues with the Maitreya body, and have had it for over 2 years. I have no desire in using any other bodies . I would however like to see an update in the future , more alpha cuts would be great!” — Naynay Domenici

Story & Photograhy Abbey Lucian
MURRAY’s Magdalena head is one of the newest mesh heads that have been introduced into Second Life — it launched in March this year. At L$990, the head comes with three unrigged mesh eyelashes, which can be edited/resized manually or via the mesh head’s HUD. It was thoughtful gesture on creator Olivia Murray’s part to include a pack of three different-sized eyelashes. In her opinion, the best way to implement the eyelashes is to use unrigged mesh options, separate from the mesh head. For the uninitiated, mesh heads are fitted mesh and are attached to the boning system of the Second Life body. In other words, they have only two modifying possibilities in the Edit Appearance mode: Head Stretch and Head Length. Tampering with these adjustments can alter the shape of the head, which will then require further resizing of the eyelashes. Thanks to Murray’s foresight, fussing with eyelashes have just got a lot easier.

GET READY TO BE SPOILT FOR CHOICE WHEN SHOPPING AT BAUHAUS MOVEMENT — THE LABEL THAT PROVIDES SOME OF THE BEST TOOLS AND PROPS IN SECOND LIFE FOR ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY.
The brainchild of LouLou Teichmann, Bauhaus Movement is one of SL’s must-visit stores for first and foremost, its static poses. Sold in collections or individually, the poses Teichmann offers include single male and female poses. An experienced SL creator, Teichmann has also created other unisex items that aspiring models and SL photographers can use as standout props for complementing her extensive range of elegant poses — think floral headpieces, breathtaking jewelery and a rather interesting genre of accessories boasting a post-apocolyptic theme. There’s also a humble collection of home furnishings from sideboards to hanging mirrors and other knick-knacks that have been fashioned with a shabby-meets-industrial style. Moving forward, Teichmann’s announced that she’s working on developing more items for men. Watch this space for more updates!

“God is in the details.” ~ Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Kunst Himmel launched [ kunst ], his lifestyle label in late 2007 after noticing a lack in realistic and quality office furniture. “Back in the day, Second Life was an attractive place for virtual meetings and many real life companies saw that as a possibility for its employees from around the world to meet online...,” said the insightful Himmel who then began building furniture inspired by a Bauhaus style.
More than just furniture design… Second Life is ever-changing, which is why I’m more focused on avatar accessories and vintage decoration now”
The craftsmanship of [kunst] products are top notch and its care to design detail truly defines the brand. Himmel prudently considers the two elements of textures and modeling, which eventually lend all his creations its soul: Metal or wood textures may see a worn-in texture to convey a shabby chic, while ultra-shine underscores the gleam of pristine glass crystal or liquid gold.
On the future of [kunst]… We keep developing the brand, trying to give our very best with each product while meeting our customers’ expectations. There is a lot in store for them in the near future.
Partnering with other Second Life brands, such as Hoorenbeek… I have done collaborative work a few times, and it has been very satisfactory. Teamwork is very interesting because each creator has their own ideas and working methods.
Meeting Himmel was an eye-opening and refreshing experience for this reporter. Himmel’s warm and friendly and he’s even got a notably humorous side, too. We even found out where he gets his artistic streak from — both his parents are visual artists. Premiere Issue 2016 | 135

The Male Fashion Industry
UPS It’s GAME Story by Abbey Lucian Photography Storm Ryder, Mr. Lambert & Beloved Ruby
The constant grouse of every fashionable SL guy looking to hone his sartorial flair has always been the meager selection of stylish men’s clothing available on the grid. “Men’s fashion will likely be always behind the evolution of women’s fashion,” said Poe Cross, the co-owner of Unkindness and 7Mad;Ravens. A self-confessed T-shirt and jeans guy, Cross looks forward to the day when he can, “help be part of that growth [in menswear fashion].” Cross — like many menswear designers — have been waiting for the right moment to “bring ideas and projects to the table.” Recently, a release on The Mesh Project’s Mesh Kit was said to be changing the face of SL men’s fashion, steering it into a brighter future. The Mesh Project (TMP) is but, of course, one of SL’s pioneers in female and male mesh bodies, featuring a model-esque style and physical appearance. In the past, fashion creators weren’t able to get their hands on TMP Mesh Kits — namely design templates for third party designers to mesh clothing and accessories compatible with TMP’s mesh bodies. A privilege reserved for only established SL designers whom TMP reviewed before granting access to their exclusive builders’ kits, the Mesh Kits are now available to all — hoorah! Calling all budding (and established) menswear designers, we hope you’re reading this because the moment is: Now.

Second Life Landscapes Story & Photography Lam Erin Edited by Lam Erin
In this article, the first of a series on Second Life landscapes, I will present four recent sim creations which are illustrative examples of the combination of SL powerful tools with the creativity of SL residents. The first sim is called Crystal Gardens and the two pictures included in the article are from the latest, summer version of the sim. The sim owner is Sandi Benelli, a great Second Life landscape photographer and sim designer. I have always taken notice of her creations as her experience of photography has an impact on the way she creates her sims.

Crystal Gardens Sim
As a landscape designer and photographer myself I have a particular interest in sims which are realistic depictions of real life landscapes. SL has the advantage of providing tools, which allow the creator to control completely the layout of the landscape they create so that the outcome is direct reflection of the creator’s skills. SL landscapes if done correctly could have a significant level of detail and complexity which could make them look very similar to Real Life landscapes. Also the fact that the designer can manipulate the shape and content of the landscape allows them to avoid certain issues which appear in RL landscapes, where for example an unfavourably shaped or located tree or building stands on the way of an otherwise great landscape capture. In SL you can avoid such problems by placing the tree or building on the “right” spot or simply by de-rendering them.

DISCOVER SL < continued One of the advantages of Sandi’s sim is that it helps you to avoid having to search for solutions like the above. All objects (trees, rocks, buildings, plants etc) have been placed on“right”, natural, spots and the scales of objects are correct. The overall sim appearance is one of a very tranquil summer environment in a natural country setting with ducks and birds. A water canal splits the sim in the middle in a way which adds to the scenery. Water reflections are amazing and the sim contains many interesting smaller natural scenes which would easily attract the interest of any photographer. When you visit the sim you get a feeling of a very “real” environment with the wind light reflecting the “heat wave”, which you would expect to see in a summer setting like this.
The second sim is the new Little Branch sim, which is opening its doors to the public on September 3rd, 2016. The sim will be housing the main store of Little Branch, creators of top quality original mesh trees, shrubbery and flowers. A very interesting part of the project is that the sim area outside of the main store was split into five sections, which were then allocated to a group of LB stylists to create using LB products four environments each covering one of the four seasons and a sim welcome area. All stylists are very talented and well-known in SL, so the outcome is expected to be amazing. I had a personal contribution to the project by being the person who designed the sim layout and who coordinated the whole work so I had been able to have an insider’s view of the sim development. At the time of writing of this article the sim project is almost complete which allowed me to obtain two sneak-peek pictures for you which I am posting here. The first is from the welcome 176 | 2ND U MAGAZINE
area designed by Jay Landar and the second is from the autumn section designed by Kalianni. The two scenes are examples of great natural scenes which SL residents can create using the high quality landscape items and trees created by Little Branch.

Use of water is prevalent in big part of the sim which at least to me gives a sense of openness and freedom.
The third sim is called “Sky Fallen”. It opened its doors to members of Elysion group (you will have to pay a L$650 fee to join). The sim belongs to Syn Beresford, who is well known in SL for creating some of the most amazing sims designs. Sky Fallen is equally amazing. The sim combines science fiction-surreal elements with realistic ones. A post-apocalyptic gazebo is the landing point and a big ancient Roman Pantheon ones.

A post-apocalyptic gazebo is the landing point and a big ancient Roman Pantheon building with post-apocalyptic features stands in close proximity to it and catches immediately the eye of the visitor. There are also rocky mountains and a number of smaller natural or surreal scenes. Use of water is prevalent in big part of the sim which at least to me gives a sense of openness and freedom. Although I do have a personal preference for realistic rather than surrealistic themes I liked Sky Fallen because it combines these two elements very skilfully and creates a unique environment in harmony and peace, which every photographer will be very happy to see. The light blue tones of the windlight complete the beautiful sim picture. Premiere Issue 2016 | 181

The bright golden colors of the leaves and the coldness of the sea and stones create an interesting autumnal mix. The windlight, sunny and cold, adds to the autumn environment.
“
The fourth sim presented here, called Bal Harbour, was designed by me, as lead designer, and Journey McLaglen. The sim has an autumn theme and was completed on August 31st. Bal Harbour theme follows my own familiar landscape pattern, which is realism. The theme is about an ocean seacoast concept with big rocks, ocean waves and water turbulence. There is also a small old fishing village with a few houses and a bar for visitors. The overall sim atmosphere contains some tension due to the wilderness of the nature but also some purity in some parts for the same reason. The bright golden colors of the leaves and the coldness of the sea and stones create an interesting autumnal mix. The windlight, sunny and cold, adds to the autumn environment. There are a number of interesting spots for landscape photographers to capture whereas the internal decoration of the bar, (old and rustic) would satisfy those liking this decor style. 184 | 2ND U MAGAZINE

DAYDREAM BELIEVERS PUPITO HELSTEIN AND LAKUA ARRIAGA LAUNCH A ONE-OF-A-KIND SHOPPING EVENT THAT’S OFF THE BEATEN TRACK.
VOL I - SEPT 2016
EVENTS trees… So we thought what a cool idea it would be to have a mini event,” explained Arriaga, the self-confessed nature lover and fan of The Cure song, A Forest. Helstein and Arriaga are not newcomers to the world of Second Life shopping events. They are in fact, the brains behind the famed *Ionic* label, as well as shopping events like The Chapter Four and Lost & Found. “It wasn’t hard at all,” expressed Arriaga on the The Forest’s list of participating creators. “We have a long list of designers whom already participate in events we host… But the idea was to invite the ones whom after so many years of working together, we consider as close as family,” she added. Since it’s debut in Jul 2016, three more creators have joined this monthly event, boasting a line-up of 21 reputable Second Life brands that include Hideki, Glam Affair, Kalopsia and more. We spoke to Arriaga to find out more… The Forest operates as a pre-paid event. What is the customer’s value-add in this and how can they purchase an event ticket?
Photography abbey lucian
What was once a place for close friends to meet, reside and enjoy good company and great music has been converted into an idyllic and unique location for a new shopping event known as The Forest. Decorated in the style of a, well, forest, the land was formerly known as The Ionic Spell and was built six months ago by Second Life partners and The Forest owners, Pupito Helstein and Lakua Arriaga. “We really enjoyed walking though the sim’s forest and getting lost among the
The Forest is a monthly event that runs from the 11th to the 25th. It will host around 20 designers each time and customers need only pay L$1,000 to join The Forest group every month. This joining fee will let you grab everything from the participating brands without any additional costs. We always try to bring the best quality designers that can provide the most in variety so that we please everyone. At present, there are designers whom offer Fatpacks in skin or hairs, while others a wide range of colour options per item. It is an event offering good deals and great quality at a very fair price. Tickets can also be purchased before and during the run of the event. How does The Forest differ from the other shopping events Pupito and yourself have organised?
Premiere Issue 2016 | 189
EVENTS We put great care into every project we embark on in SL, from creating a single product item to putting together an entire concept sim. The Forest is a new event concept, which we think is further enhanced by the environment it has been set in. We want to immerse our customers into a unique shopping experience whereby trekking into the woods will lead them to finding beautiful items, which they can grab “for free” along the way. It is also how we imagined the idea exploring dirt paths and getting lost in an environment where birds are singing and sunlight radiates on the tree leaves. In short, we wanted to offer a new, sensitive shopping experience. Was it difficult in putting together this holistic shopping experience — decorating-wise? This is not the first time we’ve had a sim like this… This is the third time we’ve created a sim made for community living, music etc… We wanted to revive these times, which reminded us of our old SL days when we were less busy and more connected with one another. Since acquiring this new sim we’ve organized many get-togethers and concerts, as well as a really successful and fun hunt a few months ago. In terms of building the sim, we completed it in 1 week — non-stop building. Outr way to make sims is to simply just do them! We never have a plan. It’s more about playing some inspiring music and then start building! Spell is your new label that’s also exclusively available at The Forest. Tell us more about it… (Laughs) Yes, Spell is a really new brand, less than 6 months old. I love Spell and I don’t find myself “working” when I’m creating the Spell items. I totally do it for fun! I started this brand with a friend, Obe, the owner of Thunk! I’ve known him since Pupito and I started in SL. Like us, Obe is a musician too, and he used use to jam with Pupito in dual-streaming mode. I work on Spell with him (he models and I texture), while Pupito also shares a brand with him called Persona. It is very new, too, and it is a really crazy store with some cute, funny avatars! 190 | 2ND U MAGAZINE

LAST LOOK Second U Magazine would like to extend its gratitude to the unconditional support from Second Life residents and stores whom have kindly permitted spaces for setting up Subscriber Kiosks. While we are unable to fullfill all requests to publish every person, company or event organizer in this section, we would like to extend our appreciation for all the kind gestures we’ve received. Special gratitude goes out to Beuanna Resident for her amazing support.
THANK YOU!
