SEC-QO Mental health: leaflet 1
The Mental Health Minimum Data Set Dashboard
The Mental Health Minimum Data Set (MHMDS) has been collected for a several years, but often the data has been patchy and poorly used. The Information Centre for Health and Social Care (IC) has been releasing information for a while from this, and much of it has been on an experimental basis, to be treated with caution. However as of the April 2010 NHS Operating Framework an number of performance based indicators all sourced from the MHMDS were specified. This data is published quarterly by the IC. The most recent quarter is always released as provisional, until it is finalised on the release of the next quarters data. The South East Coast Quality Observatory have taken the data from the IC and turned it into a dashboard.

What’s in the MHMDS dashboard? There are 16 indicators in the dashboard these are split into two domains: Activity and Data Quality. Activity Indicators: • • • • • •
Proportion of adults on Care Programme Approach receiving secondary mental health services in employment Proportion of adults on Care Programme Approach receiving secondary mental health services in employment The proportion of users on new Care Programme Approach who have had a HoNOS assessment in the last 12 months The proportion of those on Care Programme Approach reviewed in at least the last 12 months The proportion of patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 who were absent without leave during the quarter Number of bed days recorded for people under 16
As well as being part of the Operating Framework the first two of these indicators are part of The Public Service Agreement (PSA) 16. Other activity indicators may be added to this in the future as MHMDS V4 is introduced in 2011/12
Data Quality Indicators: Data quality can be further subdivide into two categories Validity and Data Completeness

Each indicator is plotted on a bar chart showing change over time. The data is displayed for each specific trust dependant upon selection from a dropdown menu. Also on each chart is a comparison to the England rate, this rate has 95% confidence intervals around it to help give a more accurate picture. The dashboard is navigated from a front page clicking on the blue hyperlinks for either activity or data quality will open up the corresponding set of charts. There are two more hyperlinks on the front page—notes and construction. These pages are lifted directly from the original IC source documents and give details on how each of the indicators works and has been built.
To view the original source data this is downloadable from the IC website: http://www.ic.nhs.uk/services/mentalhealth/mental-health-minimum-dataset-mhmds/routine-quarterly-mhmds-reports
And more…..! The MHMDS dashboard is one of a number of dashboards that support Mental Health. A community mental health teams dashboard has also been developed based around the activity submitted monthly to Omnibus. There are two further dashboards that show the Vital Signs CAMHS returns; one provider based and one commissioner based. In addition to this there are three Dementia dashboards, one each for provider, commissioner and social care
