Responsible Design Secret Bay’s residences are composed entirely of sustainably-sourced Guyanese Greenheart. And, even more impressive, perhaps, is the fact that no heavy machinery was involved in construction; Secret Bay was assembled meticulously by hand. The villas were conscientiously placed in specific locations so as minimal clear-cutting would take place, while the indoor furniture is crafted from locally-sourced Dominican Red Cedar by local artisans. Residences and other resort structures were built and developed with LEED best practices and standards in order to protect the wide variety of flora and fauna that grow and live in this exceptional space, as well as the fragile corals of the waters below. Because of the rich marine life, the hotel has applied for the area around Secret Beach to be made a “Marine Reserve.”
A Sustainable Approach Known as the “Nature Island” and acclaimed for its commitment to becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation, Dominica is the Caribbean’s most environmentally-conscious island, and at Secret Bay, we are proud to be a leader in its world-renowned sustainability efforts. Secret Bay’s innovative guest experience is built around various communal and private spaces, with each structure built in nature, not on it. Our designs feature seamless indoor-outdoor floor plans outfitted with state-of-the-art energy efficient appliances, and take into consideration the delicate balance between functionality and careful siting to minimise our impact on the land. Secret Bay has planted thousands of flowers and trees across the resort site, including vetiver around the perimeter of the property to keep the cliff strong for future generations. The national flower Bwa Kwaib, local varieties of Bay, Aloe Vera and Ylang Ylang all grow in abundance within the property’s two distinct microclimates. Secret Bay’s executive chef also uses wild herbs and bushes that grow across the island in his fresh, locally-sourced dishes at Zing Zing restaurant. The kitchen always recycles and composts the waste from the development on a daily basis. Secret Bay has also instigated several Environmental Impact Assessments and has taken great care to establish an effective drainage system on the property with a drip irrigation system to reuse wastewater. Guests are encouraged to use our provided separate recycling and compost waste bins in each villa as we do in our chef ’s kitchen. We have also introduced high capacity compost tumblers for landscaping and food waste, which significantly increases our compositing capacity and efficiency. In addition to using biodegradable food packaging, we have eliminated single-use plastic bottles by introducing branded reusable borosilicate glass bottles for guests with an under-sink water filtration system in each villa. Dominica, Nature Island of the Caribbean History has it that when Christopher Columbus–having been unable to land his ships on Dominica–was asked to describe the island upon his return to Spain, he scrunched up a piece of parchment in order to evoke the country’s undulating terrain of volcanoes, valleys and mountains.
