SERVICE PROJECTS
First Meeting
On August 26th, SE Tech Key Club held its very first meeting for the 2015-2016 school year. Anticipating the possibility of new members, the Board decided to hold the first meeting in our Commons. Imagine our surprise when the Commons ended up being half filled with new members! Later, after we counted our sign in sheet, we found out we had approximately 70+ students who attended the first meeting! While the board members got their presentation up, our wonderful SAAs broke the ice by playing games with the members. Although the meeting started off slow, it was nice to see how many members really got into it afterwards. The members got really excited and seemed to really enjoy each other’s company. After the members were all calmed down, the board members went over their presentation and introduced the new members to Key Club. The board members also tentatively (so not to make it seem like it was mandatory) introduced RTC and informed members that the next meeting would provide more information on it. When the meeting was over, a lot of members came up to me and said “See you next week!” and I got so happy hearing how many people were interested in joining Key Club because of how many good things they’ve heard about it.

Flag Cutting Written by: Danika Manguiat Over the course of three days (starting September 5), I got together with a local CCSD teacher and helped her cut flags for Foothills High School. When I first accepted the task, I had imagined that I would be cutting tiny flags. However, when I arrived, I was quick to realize that the job was on a grander scale than I had originally imagined. Using a hot knife, a tool I had never even heard of until that day, I was to help hold down, fold, and count flags, as the teacher did the tedious task of cutting 600 flags; some, spreading over 7 feet wide! If that wasn’t bad, we were expected to get at least 200 done by that Monday! Though the task seemed like a bad remake of Mission Impossible considering there was only two hot knifes which constantly had to be cleaned in between cuts, we took the daunting task by working non-stop on the flags. Over the course of three days, and with an aesthetically pleasing chart keeping us motivated, we somehow managed to cut, fold, and bag approximately 550 flags that were to be sewn together to make one big flag. The missing 50 was only because we ran out of fabric. Regardless of how tedious and time consuming it was, helping to cut these flags felt very rewarding because I got to help out a stressed teacher and ensure her that the task wasn’t impossible.

Saturday of Service Written by: Danika Manguiat On Saturday, September 12th, our Key Club had its first volunteer event of the school year. For Saturday of Service, members went down to our local Opportunity Village to help set up for their annual Christmas and Halloween festivities. Our group was set up into two categories, and my group ended up helping out with the lights. Our job was to help unwind, check, and rewind the various Christmas lights they had. Due to how long the lights were left untouched, our hands got dirtied very quickly and got very black. We had members who were in charge of plugging in lights to make sure they worked, members who were in charge of winding them up, and members who were in charge of moving the broken lights to a corner. It was a really pleasant surprise to see how many members showed up and helped set up. Plus, the supervisors in charge of us constantly made sure we were all hydrated and asking each other if we were okay, so it was very refreshing!
RTC Preparation Written by: Kelly Trigueros
Hello, I am Kelly Trigueros and I am Southeast tech Key club treasurer. The date for RTC is nearing, and our members are eager to go, so we have been practicing the awesome cheers made by our SAA’s Noemi and Debbie. We had set to do a potluck on september 19 in sunset park. The social was a hit; filled with laughs and smiles. We made progress in the cheers and members contributed in their ideas for the cheers. Also we taught “how do you feel” cheer to the new members, which was a lot fun. There are a lot of new member who were unsure of themselves when saying the cheer, but old members were very supportive and helped them out right next to them. It was great to see people help one another, to feel confident. Everyone smiled and cheered when they saw the whole board had been called out. Not only was the progress great, but the weather was amazing. It wasn’t to hot, and it was refreshing to be under the shade. Once the hard work of practicing we all ate and had a water balloon fight. We all had a great time, and we all got close together with one another. It was a fun way to bond and cool down.
