LÁCAR AREA 1

Catritre Beach

Catritre is one of the most popular beaches in the city. It is located on the shores of Lake Lácar, just 4km away from the urban shell. It may be accessed both on private vehicles traveling along National Route 40 or by public transport. During the summer months, it is visited mainly by young people and families from San Martín de los Andes. It offers restrooms and camping areas run by the Mapuche Curruhinca community. How to get there: Take National Route 40 (Seven Lakes Road). You will find a 1-km-long detour towards Catritre Beach on the right, 4 km away from the town. | Duration: half a day. | Total roundtrip: 10 km. | Recommendation: check road conditions beforehand. | Note: there is a campsite and a day recreation area.

Yuco, Lake Nonthue, Hua Hum and International Pass

This beautiful excursion takes visitors deep into the vastness of Lanin National Park, around lakes, woods and paradisiacal beaches. Yuco, a delightful beach with natural pools of crystal-clear waters, lies just 25km away from San Martín de los Andes. Following Provincial Route 48, you will reach Lake Nonthué, the continuation of Lake Lácar and source of the Hua Hum River, which empties the waters from the entire Lácar – Nonthué basin into the Pacific Ocean. This wonderful scene has campsites, restrooms and gastronomic services. Besides, the Van Dorsser Museum is located in the area and open to visitors. International Pass: this road leads to Chile across Lake Pirihueico on board a ferry boat. How to get there: This area is accessed through National Route 40 towards the North up to the junction with Provincial Route 48. The zone known as Pampa de Trompul lies 11km ahead and the access to Yuco Peninsula is located 14km away. Provincial Route 48 continues to border Lake Nonthué up to Hua Hum. | Duration: half a day/ all day. | Total roundtrip from SMA: 96km. | Recommendation: check road conditions in advance in the winter season. | Note: There are several camping areas in the surroundings. This is the starting point for rafting tours. Contact the authorized travel agencies in the city.

Bandurrias Viewpoint

Bandurrias viewpoint is one of the most attractive and popularly visited panoramic points in San Martín de los Andes. It features a sight of the vastness of Lake Lácar and the Chapelco Mountain Range. It lies just 6km away from the city, following a gorgeous road through the woods. Bandurrias day recreational area lies a few meters away. This is an ideal site to enjoy lunch or a picnic while being delighted by one of the most amazing views in the region. This incredible sector has a convenience store, camping areas and restrooms run by the Mapuche community. How to get there: Take National Route 40 towards the North up to the junction with Provincial Route 48. Turn into that road and you will find the detour leading to the park ranger station 2km away on the left. After 4km, you will get to an information post where you will be charged the access to the Mapuche community territory. Once inside, you will be able to see the Bandurrias viewpoint and/or take a detour towards Trompul and La Islita Beach. | Duration: half a day. | Total roundtrip from SMA: 12km. | Recommendation: Check road conditions in advance. Drive carefully, it is a narrow road.

Arrayán Viewpoint

The viewpoints stand just 4 km away from the downtown. They boast a beautiful sight of the urban shell of San Martín de los Andes, Lake Lácar and the Andes Mountain Range. Arrayán Tea House lies a few meters away from this panoramic point. This historical construction dates back to 1939 and has been declared Architectural Historical Heritage. Visitors to this venue may enjoy a delicious cup of tea and a piece of homemade cake as well as other delicacies. How to get there: The road starts at Lake Lácar waterfront. There is a fork leading to National Route 40 and Juez Quiroga slope. Take the road on the left and cover 2km along a paved road up to the building housing the Sol de los Andes Educational Center. The gravel road starts there. There is another fork 1km ahead. The road on the left is the alternative way to Chapelco and the one on the right leads to the Arrayán viewpoints, 1km away. Some meters ahead, you will find the access to the Tea House and Lodge. There are two options to return to the city: either retracing your steps following the same road or driving on for 9 more kilometers up to the junction with National Route 40. | Duration: half a day. | Recommendation: drive carefully; it is a mountain road.

Chachín Cascade

A beautiful interpretation trail that leads to Chachin Cascade is accessed just 3km away from the area known as Hua Hum. After a 30-minute low-difficulty walk, this wonderful waterfall is discovered amidst the heart of the Valdivian rainforest. Recomendación: La zona está poco señalizada. Ante cualquier inquietud recomendamos consultar al guardaparque de la Seccional Hua Hum.

Quila Quina

This beautiful Patagonian spot lies 18km away from San Martín de los Andes. Beaches with crystal clear waters and white sands framed by an ample bay on Lake Lácar may be enjoyed at this location, as well as multiple trails that cover the entire peninsula. Native communities co-exist with typical families from San Martín de los Andes in this place. The area offers a restaurant on Lake Lácar and restrooms. How to get there: take National Route 40 (Seven Lakes Road). You will find a detour on the right 6km away. After traveling 12 km along a narrow winding road made of consolidated gravel, you will get to Villa Quila Quina. Duration: half a day. Total roundtrip from SMA: 36km. Recommendations: check road conditions in advance in the winter. Note: there are several campsites in the area. Likewise, tourist information, restrooms, restaurant and sport facilities are available. Visitors will be charged the National Park entrance fee.

Chapelco Resort

Chapelco Resort is one of the most renowned winter centers in South America, not only because of its excellent services and snow quality but also for its surrounding scene. How to get there: Leaving from the end of Lake Lácar waterfront, turn right into National Route 40 (Seven Lakes Road) and then drive on for 15km and turn left into Provincial Route 19. Cover 5km along a gravel road up to the base of Mount Chapelco. | Duration: half a day. | Total roundtrip from SMA: 30km. | Recommendation: check road conditions in advance. In the winter, find out about the need to use snow tires to access the base.
