Habent papam Can The Vatican Become More Democratic Under Pope Francis? Fr Bill Grimm MM Tokyo: Pope Francis I was a popular archbishop of Buenos Aires, noted among other things for the simplicity of his lifestyle and his sympathy for the poor. It remains to be seen how that translates into the papacy. I am both annoyed and gratified by the adulation he has received for riding buses rather than limousines. It does not speak well of the Church’s leaders when reaching into one’s pocket to pull out a bus fare like the rest of us is considered extraordinary. It does speak well of Francis, though, that he has avoided the sort of behavior we have come to regard as the norm in bishops. The new pope lived through a terrible period of Argentinian history as people struggled to restore democracy. Perhaps that experience will give him the incentive to restore at least some degree of democracy in the Church. Critics of the collegiality called for by Vatican II and subverted by Francis’s immediate predecessors often claim that "the Church is not a democracy." They are grammatically correct. The Church is not, in the present tense, a democracy. However, in the past, the Church was, indeed, a democracy. Ecumenical councils voted on dogma. Bishops, including the bishop of Rome, were elected by the people. One of the more interesting examples of that was the election of Pope St Fabian in 236. He was an out-of-towner who happened to be in Rome while Roman Christians were assembled to elect a new bishop after the martyrdom of Pope Anterus. (In those days, election to the papacy was election to martyrdom). It happened that a dove landed on Fabian’s head, and when the crowd saw it, they took it to be a sign of divine

favor. So they acclaimed him pope, a ministry he exercised for 14 years until his martyrdom. Historical knowledge of his papacy is limited, but there is some evidence that he did a respectable job of it. Today, of course, neither pigeons nor the People of God in Rome or anywhere else choose the pope. Instead, 115 elderly appointees came together in isolation and elected a "law king" (the Japanese word for "pope") for some 1.2 billion Catholics throughout the world. Neither do Catholics have any say in the bishops of their dioceses. The democratic system that produced bishops like St Ambrose (who wasn’t even baptized when he was elected) and St Augustine has been replaced by the pope choosing bishops and assigning them to various sees regardless of their connection – or lack of connection – to the local Church. Even parishes must welcome or endure priests sent to them on the say-so of officials who need not answer to the community or its needs, talents and hopes. When Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran came out on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and announced "Habemus papam!" – we have a pope – he meant his "we" to refer to the Church. But, it could as easily be taken to mean "we cardinal electors." The rest of us could justly say "Habent papam" – they have a pope – since we had no involvement in the choice beyond saying our prayers. Whether Francis becomes our pope in more than name will depend upon what he does in the few years he will have in that role. One thing he should do is to return the Church to its ancient faith in the Holy Spirit working through the voice of the People of God. It may take a long time to wean the Church from being an absolute monarchy, but a pope who has taken the name of a humble servant of all can begin the process. Perhaps then the announcement of his successor might be "habemus" in the fullest sense of the word. Fr Bill Grimm MM is the publisher of ucanews.com based in Tokyo (Source: ucanews)

a rather romantic notion of Francis, the “Il Poverello, the lover of nature, and his enduing friendship with the beautiful St Clare. The other side of Francis was a man who mortified himself so much and identified so closely with Jesus, that he received the Stigmata, the wounds of Jesus in his own flesh. While popes and kings were launching into crusades to free the Holy Land from the Muslims, Francis was actually engaging in dialogue with the Saracens (Muslims). His prayer “Make me a Channel of Peace was adopted not just by Mother Teresa, but also by Mahatma Gandhi. Even today it is found in the Gandhian prayer book, and we recite it together on Gandhi Jayanti and his martyrdom day. Another striking similarity was the emergence of a “middle class to which he belonged, as distinct from the royals and feudals. The church was in desperate need of change. He didn’t do it by violence, as in the French Revolution. Nor did he resort to Reformation like Martin Luther, from outside. He did it by Renewal from within. That required much more courage. As somebody once said “It is easy to throw stones from outside. It made me wonder. If the problems are the same, so should the solution be. That is why I believe in the Franciscan way of life and radical renewal. That is also why I had tears of joy when I heard that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio SJ had taken the name of Francis on his election. For me it was a sure indicator that the new pope saw St Francis of Assisi as his role model. When I subsequently learnt that this Argentinean cardinal lived in a small apartment, took public transport to commute, and even cooked his own food, my joy knew no bounds. St Francis was called the “Alter Christi

(another Christ) the greatest saint after the apostolic era. Are we then looking at another era in the Catholic Church? I sincerely hope so. When I found that the new pope was also a Jesuit (some say the first one to become a pope) I was even more excited. As a Franciscan layman I had begun to develop a fixed state of mind. Then I got exposed to the Jesuits Pepe Casasnovas (Spanish), Peter Ribes (again Spanish), Dan Brown (American) and Josef Neuner (Austrian). I learnt much from them about ecclesiology and the discernment of spirits. Their guidance has held me in good stead. I felt that a combination of Franciscan zeal and Jesuit intellectual prowess was ideal. That seems to be the strength behind the new pope. “Great indeed are your works oh Lord“. I also feel a personal sense of vindication. Immediately after Benedict XVI’s resignation I wrote, ”Quo Vadis Mater Ecclesia?” in which I asked, “Do we need another Francis of Assisi?” I had also referred to the impact of St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. So did I discern the spirits correctly? In my Open Letter to the 5 Indian cardinal electors I expressed a first preference for a Latin American. Again spot on. In my last article, “Past, Present, Future – All Tense”, I had hoped that the new pope would embody the 6Hs – human, humble, honest, holy, harmonious and hardworking. By all accounts I seem to have got what I asked for. Surely this must have been the unspoken aspiration of millions of Catholics around the globe. Now to the pollsters and punsters. I read two articles in the Tablet, the most respected Catholic weekly in England. One had an analysis of the “experience” of the 115 cardinals under six heads – Curial experience, Moral Teaching, Social justice, Liturgy, Ecumenism and Religious Dialogue, and Governance. It rated Bergoglio with just 3 – Curial experience, moral teaching and social justice. This was even less than the 4 stars of Cardinal Ivan Dias, and on par with the 3 stars of Telesphore Toppo So much for experience. Another article used Human Resource Management techniques. It identified 3 areas or qualities required Charisma, Governance and Global Fluency (acceptance). Strangely the only area that Bergoglio covered was “Governance”, which was not featured in the previous analysis. The only 3 who qualified by the HR formula were Schonbohn of Vienna, Scola of Milan and O’Malley of Boston. So much for HR too! S for the punsters, Ladbrokes of Britain had odds of 33/1 on Bergoglio. Seems so odd now! In my personal preference (not published) I had hoped for Francis Arinze (Nigeria) Peter Turkson (Ghana), Agnelo Scola (Milan) and Sean O’Malley (Boston). I was subsequently also impressed by Luis Tagle (Manila). I may have got the brand names wrong, but I think the generic name of the prescription was correct. Cardinal Bergoglio may have been the dark horse in the race, but I see in Pope Francis a light of hope for the future.
Viva il papa!

EADER'S
Pope Francis, a welcome change All eyes are now set on the new incumbent to the Holy See, Pope Francis I , as he gets ready to take on the role of the Supreme Pontiff and Shepherd of the Catholic church’s 1.2 billion Catholics. A stupendous task now awaits the Holy Father at a time when the Catholic church is at the crossroads, battling scandals of clerical sexual abuse and cover- up by bishops that blew up during the papacy of Benedict XVI and alienated several in the church because of the pope’s inept handling and soft approach to errant priests . Unlike Pope Benedict’s academic style of functioning and poor pastoral appeal, Pope Francis is known to be a man of the poor and a missionary that could help to give a new shape to the church by rekindling the missionary fires in the year of faith and new evangelization set in motion to bring back the lost sheep in countries where the Catholic religion is in a free fall and overtaken by evangelical churches. It is also hoped that Pope Francis’ simplistic way of life and frugality will serve as an example to other church dignitaries to shed their ostentation and bear witness to true gospel values through their works of mercy and compassion and option for the poor and the marginalized of society.

The New Pope With the election of Jorge Bergoglio as our new pope, the catholic church is heading for a new era of revival - with many issues and challenges church facing today. We shall rejoice as we have a pope chosen by divine power to lead the church and its faithful toward a renewed face, with reconciliation and unity. The election proved that today, the focus lies on developing countries, where, today's greater number of catholics are based - a fact acknowledged by all. It is a paradigm shift of power - long held by Europe's dominance and it is a good sign.
We shall pray and support our new pope in his mission for invigorating the catholic church, back to its glory.

Prayerful Congratulations to Pope Francis
Prayerful congratulations and good wishes to His Holiness Pope Francis on becoming the 266th Pope. This is a triumph for the Jesuit Order which always maintained a proud and independent heritage. In keeping with the Ignatian motto of ‘What Would Jesus Do (WWJD), he should fast track the ongoing canonization of Oscar Romero, Archbishop of El Salvador, who was martyred while celebrating Holy Mass on 24 March 1980. His canonization will encourage socio political involvement of the Church in the modern world. —Denis Khan

Dialogue, Governance And Other Priorities For The New Pope Dedication To Dialogue
A
n eminent professor of history at Princeton University, An thony Grafton, remarked in a short article in The New York Review of Books in 2010 that Pope Benedict XVI was probably “the greatest scholar to rule the church since Innocent III,” a pope whose reign covered the last years of the 12th century and the first years of the 13th century. Grafton meant those words in a laudatory sense, but they were double-edged. It is true that Innocent III made his reputation as a great canoA punch list (ASmerica)nist and church reformer in Europe, but he also claimed more than ecclesiastical authority over the princes in Europe. Innocent also called for crusades against the Albigensians in the south of France as well as against the Muslims in both Spain and the Holy Land, even if he sometimes deplored the violence with which those campaigns were carried out. In 1187, 11 years before Innocent ascended the papal throne, most of the Holy Land had been wrested from the Crusaders by Saladin after 88 years of Crusader rule. Innocent saw that Crusader defeat as the result of the Crusaders’ sins. The Fourth Crusade, launched by Innocent III, was aimed at retrieving the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem, from Muslim rule but somehow led instead to the pillaging of Eastern Christian Constantinople in the year 1204. The Greek Orthodox have neither forgotten nor forgiven this. Great as he is, Pope Benedict has sometimes, like Innocent III, found himself in situations he never intended to create. His academic lecture in 2006 at the University of

Mending Our Nets The rapid secularisation of Western societies, and their need to be evangelized anew, has been a major papal theme since Pope Paul VI. While a pope from Manila or São Paulo might
not feel these issues quite so keenly as one from Milan or New York, they are unlikely to disappear from the church’s agenda anytime soon. In fact, there will almost certaintly be an early, major magisterial statement on the subject: an exhortation on “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith,” responding to last October’s Synod of Bishops, will be high on our new Holy Father’s to-do list. Given the scale and complexity of the task, the new evangelization can and must encompass a great many things, everything from Twitter to the theology of the body, from the Divine Mercy to the works of mercy. Our recent popes, of course, have guided the faithful—as teachers and witnesses—on each one of these (deliberately disparate) examples. Important as such undertakings are, however, there remains one fundamental issue that urgently needs to be addressed. If it is not, then—to put it bluntly—the new evangelization is doomed to abject failure.

Like Pope Paul VI, he must discern, “at the heart of the world there dwells the mystery of the human person discovering oneself to be God’s child in the course of a historical and psychological process in which constraint and freedom as well as the weight of sin and the breath of the Spirit alternate and struggle for the upper hand.” All of the five predecessors of Emeritus Pope Benedict are candidates for canonization as saints. Who is Pope Francis?
W
A profile and appraisal of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, by Fr Mick Kelly.
hile everyone agrees that the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis is unprecedented in many ways, it is not entirely a surprise. He was runner up to Joseph Ratzinger in the 2005 Conclave that saw him elected as Pope Benedict XVI. Bergoglio is the first Jesuit, first Latin American and first Pope from the southern hemisphere. He is of Italian migrant parents but not a “Romano” or a Curial Cardinal, having had no time in his working life at the Vatican. He is considered a theological conservative but an informed pastor, especially attentive to the needs of poor, reflecting that commitment in the simplicity of his own lifestyle. It could be said that the times and forces that have shaped him, the jobs he has done and the challenges he has had to face, have prepapared him well for papacy. Raised in the high time of socialist fascism – a political cocktail mixed uniquely for Argentina by Juan Peron – he joined the Jesuits in the 1950s. Quite unusually, he was made Provincial of the Jesuits in Argentina in his 30s – 1973 to 1979. The 1970s were years when the Jesuits in Argentina were riven with factions and conflicts, with many leaving the Order. The conflicts were as much about the direction for the Order and the Church - as Liberation Theology burst upon the scene in Latin America - as they were about local politics. Decades of political conflict over Juan Peron and his legacy, followed by a military dictatorship, divided Argentineans and the Jesuits there too. Holding the Jesuits together at that time in Argentina was no slight challenge. But he was also fully engaged with a worldwide impulse for change within the Jesuits. They reached their decisive expression in
10
1975 at an extraordinary meeting of the highest level of governance in the Order – a General Congregation. Bergoglio was intimately involved in that process. The chosen direction of the Jesuits incurred the wrath of the Vatican. In 1981, John Paul II set aside the head of the Order, Pedro Arrupe, and appointed a Visitor to investigate and, if needed, correct alleged excesses. At around the same time, military defeat by the UK over the disputed Malvinas/Falklands Islands began the process of removing the military dictatorship and restoring democracy. Bergoglio is criticized for his apparent fence sitting during the dictatorial regime in Argentina during this period. But he led public calls for the repentance of the Church for its silence over the “dirty wars” and “disappearances” during the military dictatorship. Bergoglio has been a bishop since 1992 and archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. While not the largest archdiocese in Latin America, that gives him a solid 15 years of substantial lead-
ership experience of the political and, as an Argentinean, the economic games that are played. His time leading that archdiocese and the Jesuits during their turmoil in the 1970s should have led him to ask the right questions, appreciate the processes required for systemic change and insight into the sort of people he needs around him to effect change. In taking the name of Francis, Bergoglio is said to be invoking the memory of Francis of Assisi He might also have a few others in mind – two Jesuits : the missionary Francis Xavier and the third Jesuit General, Francis Borgia, a widower, father of a large family and Duke of Gandia, who joined the Jesuits in mid life and because of his administrative experience, quickly shot to the top job. It only remains to be seen if a smart and experienced outsider is equal to the task of reforming the Curia and bringing wider Church processes closer to what Vatican II invited the Church to become. ‘He Never Wanted To Be Pope’
Getting the Numbers Right
"The expression on his face spoke of a fullness of heart," she said.
Buenos Aires: Pope Francis’ only surviving sibling has said that the former never wanted to be a pontiff and that she had prayed privately that he did not rise to head the Vaican. "He didn't want to be pope and when we chatted privately about it, we joked at the prospect and he would say 'no, please no',” said Mar?a Elena Bergoglio, pope’s sister. Maria, who is 11 years his junior, said she did not want him to become pope because “he's going to be very far away and second because it is such a large responsibility." She maintained that she is "totally proud" that her sibling was the first pontiff from Latin America. Speaking from her small , brownbrick bungalow in the shabby town of Ituzaingo in the old manufacturing belt south of Buenos Aires, Maria described her brother as a “poor man” as she imagined his thoughts just before walking out on the balcony, the massive crowd in Saint Peter's Square in his first appearance as the pontiff. She said she couldn't predict what her brother will do as pope, but noted that "his inclination" has always been "to work for the poor, the most marginalized." She said that she had met John Paul II when her brother was made a cardinal in 2001 and been struck by

an air of sadness. “When I fell to my knees to kiss his ring, I looked up and saw a gaze of such love, but at the same time of infinite loneliness," she said. "Although the gaze of my brother reflects love, I don't want it to also reflect loneliness," she added. But from watching Pope Francis on television, she said he appeared joyful with his new role. "The expression on his face spoke of a fullness of heart," she said. "I feel we have to pray a lot for him because we are living in a very troubled world at a difficult time for the church, we need God permanently," she said. The pope is the oldest of five children -- three boys and two girls. His three other siblings, Alberto, Oscar, and Marta Regina are no more. Mrs Bergoglio's son Jorge Vallejos, 37, said she was resting after the previous day's excitement. "It was a great surprise to us when we saw the news on the television. We feel immense happiness and it is a great honour. My mother cried a lot and was so excited that she could not sleep for the whole night," he said. "My uncle never expected to be Pope. It is not a job he was looking for and it comes with a tremendous responsibility."
After Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran announced to the world Wednesday that "habemus Papam" and that he had taken the name Francis, many immediately started referring to the new Pontiff as Francis I. Some hours later and again today, the Vatican clarified that his name is just Francis, and there is no need to refer to him with a number unless or until a future pope takes the name Francis II. More confusion surrounds references to Francis as the Successor of St. Peter. Is he the 265th, 266th or 267th pope? Everyone knows St. Peter was the first pope, which means St. Linus (who reigned from 67 to 76) was St. Peter's first successor. Following that logic and according to some counts, Francis is the 266th pope, the 265th successor of St. Peter. However, as James Hitchcock, author of "History of the Catholic Church," clarified for ZENIT, "Stephen II in the eighth century died before he was installed as pope. Some lists count him and some do not." Thus, Francis is considered by some the 267th pope, the 266th successor of St. Peter.

Right to our Land -
A Socio-Ecological Perspective

ur world today is on the threshold of socio- eco nomic, political, and climatic injustice. Like never before we are amidst a catastrophe of events which seem to highlight the insignificance of the common man. Amir Khan’s recent advertisement “Abortion Bharat Chodo” is a sign for all Indians that we need to stand for justice in whatever form it may be. Today we have to stand against the evils of the nation like abortion, euthanasia, corruption, terrorism and other evils of the nation that are breaking and dividing the nation. Today we need to fight against the evils of the society and also make the nation an evil-free nation. The Government should introduce a law where people could complain against those people who are fostering such evils like abortion, euthanasia, corruption, terrorism and other evils of the nation. Let us all stand again stand evils of the society like abortion, euthanasia, corruption, terrorism and other evils of the nation. —Cajetan Peter D’Souza personalities. World over it has been recognized that Christians are at the forefront of humanitarian service. We are taught to love others before self. And the community of O. L. of Assumption Parish has been at the vanguard in service to all communities, through its Non- profit Dental clinic, outreach programs for deprived groups, scholarship programs for economically backward students etc. Also the church ground facilitates as cultural complex to both Christian and nonchristian. The community has being playing an integral part in the economic, social and cultural rights of others, which is indispensable for the dignity and the free development of the community at large.
The O.L. of Assumption parish has a 450 year history. The Poisar river has always run along the northwestern side of the church property. The BMC needs the 5 meters to widen the river and make an access road, which will lead to the interference with the privacy of the community at large. ( violation of article 12 of Human Rights) The parish of O.L. Assumption is the centre of prayer to over 10,000 Catholics and is also visited by many non-christians who believe in the message of Christ. If we calculate the number of parishners from the past 450 years of its history, the figure would be mind boggling. Also the church cemetery holds memories of beloved ones who have left for their eternal journey. Thus, this property is rightfully of the community and any attempt to take even an inch is a violation of the right to own property alone as well as in association with others (article 17). We shall not be deprived of our property. The Church is the Body of Christ, and we are its parts. The Church plays a critical role in shaping our

Social activity is important for singles and families. Connecting with others brings more meaning into our life. The Church is an important platform for development of Social and interpersonal skills. Socializing leads to Healthy Relationships and Stress reduction. Also the church grounds house over 60 fully grown trees, each over 50 years old. These trees provide vital oxygen to the entire area, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Annual activities like Parents day celebration, Sun-
day- school annual day, zonal sports, youth week etc have given all members of the parish community a time to enjoy and share, very much in queue to article 24 which stresses that ‘Everyone has the right to rest and leisure’. 5.
At any given time the parish school of St. Joseph’s annually has over 3000 students. The school is over 100 years old and has shaped the entire community through its selfless service to all communities. Education today focuses on holistic development, wherein 50% of school time needs to be physical activity. The school ground has played a vital role in the overall development of the students and will continue to do so. Encroaching on the school ground will deprive the children to their right to holistic education. We as a community are passing through a challenging phase. We need to unite to fight the forces of injustice. We need to also use the power of prayer, to open the minds of the decision makers. Most importantly, we need to change our attitude to the problem and move with confidence in our position as victors rather than victims, fully aware of our right to our land as our basic human right.

A Modern Agenda As the leader of the world’s largest religious organization, Pope Francis has the potential to use his power and influence for enormous good. I hope he will continue and expand his lifelong outreach to the poor and disadvantaged. That may be difficult living in a palace where he is surrounded by priceless art, obsequious servants and scheming underlings, but perhaps he will, nonetheless, call the church to live its mission and to serve a hungry world.
also be on his agenda. A church that is so out of step with modern society and with its own members on such fundamental matters will continue to lose its relevance. Finally, the new pope must do whatever it takes to make certain that sexual abuse by clergy has ended forever. —Dan Kasten, Carrollton
Armageddon & Judgement Armageddon is a name applied to which political rulers are being gathered in opposition to Jehovah and his kingdom by Jesus Christ. Judgment Day begins after the war of Armageddon, when Satan’s system on earth will be destroyed. Judgment Day lasts a thousand years. The Bible says “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.” (Rom. 6:7) Those resurrected come to life with a chan slate. To live forever, both Armageddon survivor and resurrected ones will have to obey the requirements during the thousand years. Thus individuals will be judged on the basis of what they do during judgment Day. Finally, Satan will be released from imprisonment and allowed to mislead humankind one last time. Whose who resist Satan will enjoy the complete fulfillment of Bible’s promise “The righteous themselves will possess the earth.... (Ps. 37:29)

Easter
Easter is celebrated with great happiness by the Catholic/Christian community all over the world. Catholics/Christians believe that on Easter Sunday Jesus Christ rose from the grave in which He was buried and entered heaven. Easter celebrations begin during the Easter vigil service on Holy Saturday (i.e. the Saturday following Good Friday). The word ‘Easter’ is derived from the name of the goddess of spring, Eostra. There are many customs and traditions that have come to be associated with Easter. On Easter Sunday people exchange Easter eggs. These are eggs made out of chocolate or cashewnuts. Easter is celebrated in different ways in different parts of the world. It is celebrated either in March or April when the trees grow new leaves and nature looks fresh and green. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili

Never Give Up On A Dream Because of Time… How often did I give up on something because it would take too long to learn, or to be good at? Let’s just say, I don’t know how to play the piano, tap dance, speak German, nor have I written a novel. There, you heard it. There’s more, but I don’t want to bore with all the things I wanted to accomplish, but didn’t. And I’m sure you have your list as well. The time it takes to be good at something, really good at something often takes longer than we thought at first. I thought I could be a professional designer in six months. It only took
two an a half years on top of that. If I knew it would take three years, then it probably would have never happened. However, if I never tried, three years would have passed anyway. If your dreams will take a long time to accomplish, don’t be disheartened, the good dreams always take a long time to accomplish. Since time passes anyway, what the heck, let’s do it!

Pope Francis was greeted Friday by Cardinal Angelo Sodano as the new pope met the Cardinals for the first time after his election. (L'Osservatore Romano)
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, was elected the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church on the fifth ballot last week. He then took the name of Francis, the first of 266 such popes, to take that name. One of the first things the new pope did was to pay his hotel bill. This would not surprise those in the slums of Argentina where Bergoglio often visited, even washing the feet of drug addicts. It seems this pope plans to break many traditions. He has many interesting views on many things.
