A Goan CEO For The World s Largest Spirits Company Diageo The world s largest spirits company Diageo Plc expectedly named operations chief Ivan Menezes as its new chief executive officer (CEO). Menezes will replace long-time CEO Paul Walsh when he retires in July. Diageo, the maker of Smirnoff, Guinness and Baileys, eased Menezes into the top job, after appointing him chief operating officer (COO) in March last year and then to its board of directors a few months later. This has been a well-managed and well-flagged transition. When Menezes was named COO, Paul Walsh was reasonably candid that he would be in the frame to be CEO, said Martin Deboo, analyst at UK-based Investec Bank. There was a general feeling that Walsh would leave next year, but (Menezes appointment) was not a surprise at all, he said. When Ivan was appointed to the board, it was obvious that they were giving him the opportunity to prove to the other directors that he was the right person for the (CEO) job, said an analyst at a London-based brokerage who declined to be named. India-born Menezes, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad and of Northwestern University s Kellogg School of Management, hails from a family of high-fliers. His elder brother Victor Menezes is the former senior vice-chairman of banking giant Citigroup and was tipped to take over the financial services conglomerate till Sandy Weill got the job. Menezes other sibling Michael Menezes is a vicepresident at Canada s Bank of Montreal while their father is a former chairman of India s Railways Board. Menezes joins the ranks of India-born executives who have made it to the top echelons of multinational companies. PepsiCo s CEO Indra Nooyi, Unilever s COO Harish Manwani and Reckitt Benckiser s CEO Rakesh Kapoor are other prominent examples. It s a phenomenal achievement for Ivan for a European company to appoint an Indian CEO... Diageo is not like a Unilever where they have an active pipeline of leaders going abroad from India. And even Unilever hasn t had an Indian CEO, said Santosh Kanekar, ex-marketing chief at Diageo s Indian unit. Menezes began his career with Swiss consumer goods maker Nestle in the early 1980s, and also held positions with Whirlpool Corp. and consultancy Booz Allen Hamilton. He joined Diageo in 1997, when the company was formed through a merger of the legendary brewery Guinness and Grand Metropolitan, a conglomerate. Menezes, along with Paul Walsh, was part of the team in charge of integrating the businesses. In the early 2000s, Menezes was named chief executive of Diageo s North American operations, a post he held for eight years. Ivan

did a good job at North America, which is Diageo s most important market in terms of profit. He guided them through the recession which was very tough, said UK-based analyst Dirk Van Vlaanderen at Jefferies. He built a lot of credibility by consistently growing the business there and he left in a very strong position, Vlaanderen said. People who have worked with him say that apart from being a smart strategic thinker and capable operations head, Menezes is a well-liked executive. He s a soft-spoken guy and he s got great people skills. For an IIM grad, he s not very aggressive. He has a collaborative approach to management but he gets his way, said Kanekar, the ex-Diageo executive. He understands the entire process very well manufacturing to the logistics to the point-of-consumption. It s rare to find people in the industry who have a comprehensive understanding of the business, Kanekar said. In October 2008, Menezes was also made chairman of Diageo s Asia Pacific business, a post which will help him drive the company s current push to increase sales in emerging markets. As part of that strategy, Diageo announced in November that it would pay $2.1 billion for a 53.4% stake in Vijay Mallya s United Spirits Ltd, India s largest distiller. The deal is expected to be completed in the quarter to June, even though Diageo will end up owning roughly 30% or lesser. Menezes was instrumental in getting the (United Spirits) deal. He wanted a stronger presence in India and had been chasing the deal for a while. He was obviously eager to close deal. said a person involved in the negotiations. Menezes steps into a role that has been held by one of the most respected executives in the liquor business.

If We Can't Have Women Priests, How About Women Cardinals?

Under its new Pope, the Catholic Church begins to feel like an animal that has emerged from winter hibernation, blinking in the sunlight and looking for pastures new. From around the world the signs of this reawakening are becoming visible. For instance, some German bishops are interested in the possibility of women being admitted to a special diaconate, as a step towards diluting the heavily masculine profile of Catholic ministry. The idea needs pushing further, not even ruling out the prospect, floated not long ago by Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, that women could be appointed as cardinals, given that red hats do not necessarily have to be proffered to clergy. As the Epistles of St Paul make clear, leadership positions in the Church can in principle be as open to women as to men. It seemed far-fetched to say such a thing in the closing days of Pope Benedict s papacy. But a pope who washes women s feet on Maundy Thursday, and is in many ways so different from his two immediate predecessors, seems capable of doing what was once almost unthinkable. Nor is it just what he does himself that will change the Church, but how people respond to him and to the opportunities that define this new Franciscan era. In that respect, the German bishops fresh thinking on women s ministry is a straw in the wind. Nor is it now unimaginable that Pope Francis strictures against clericalism when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires against clergy who strut around declaring I m the boss, as he puts it might influence the way the Church functions elsewhere. Anglican church leaders, who had come sadly to terms with the fact that no further progress towards visible unity with the Catholic Church was likely, have already noted that a change in style in Rome could put organic union back on the agenda. The international Anglican-Catholic theological dialogue is about to resume, and the question of how the two Churches reach decisions on disputed matters is a key one. In Anglicanism the lay voice has a real right to be heard; in the Catholic system this right is purely theoretical. For its own good as well as for the sake of the ecumenical process, the Catholic Church needs to grow structures of dialogue with its own laity for genuine listening, with a genuine prospect of responding. The Catholic Church in England and Wales has been negligent in this respect, despite the positive encouragement given to participative structures in the Second Vatican Council. So far, the positive response to the election of Pope Francis by the bishops (Contd.. on p. 6)

Unleashing the Power of Ballot Box

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. PLATO

For the last two decades and over twenty long years, the southern coastal belt of Karnataka was diagnosed by malicious diseases of hate, intolerance and communalism. This was solely perpetuated by the SanghParivar Top-command, who mixed the bread and butter combination of religion and politics in their manifesto, devised communal strategies and spread false consciousness in the societies. A region that reflectedbenevolent amiable history, rich culture, heritage, trade and pluralism throughout ages had seen a paradigm shift in the late nineties intellectually, ideologically and socially. As soon as Vajpayee-Advani Led BJP rose to power in 1999, the SanghParivar flexed its muscles and began propagating their Fascist- Racist Ideology across the country. They spotted green pastures in Dakhsina Kannada Udupi, recruited and trained thousands of unemployed, illiterate and frustrated young men from towns and cities, Campaigned door to door with their venomous ideas and thus reshaped these districts into a hot-bed of hindutva Authoritarianism. Soon, hundreds of saffron youth gangs cropped up, exclusively funded by the ruling partyand the underworld, tearing apart the once tolerant region and making it the precedent of comTiny Parties or Lavish Weddings we take care of them all

Sarajbit Singh Tragic End

The news that Sarabjit Singh was assaulted very badly spread like wild fire. The politicians / media lapped it. They targeted the Pakistani authorities for its failure to protect the inmates. Terms like butchery and murder were freely used. The Indian Government was not spared. There were heated debates on how the Pak authorities have utterly failed in its primary duty. The men on the other side insisted that he was a spy or a terrorist for which he was convicted. We went overboard telling them how responsible we are and how we spent some 80 crores to protect Ajmal Kasab [actually it was to protect him from being eliminated by his handlers and not for his safety as a convict]. The moment Sarabjit succumbed to his injuries; the protests became more vociferous because there was a chance for vote bank politics . The Akalis raised the tempo accusing the Government of not doing enough over the years to save his life. They even gave him a State funeral. Nobody questioned this for fear of losing votes. Where were the Akalis themselves all these years? They could have protested to get him back, the same way as they are doing now against the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar. The whole country was aghast with the inhuman and insensitive attitude of the Pak authorities. There were even calls for snapping diplomatic ties with that county and suspension of all talks. The moment the news of a Pakistani prisoner in Jammu being brutally attacked in retaliation, there was deafening silence. This is hypocrisy. All political parties should have condemned this incident as well. He too was a human being and deserved to be protected. We could have proved our sensitivity. Perhaps the grave fault on the part of Pak authorities was its refusal to send Sarabjit to India the moment it was clear that he is brain dead. That would have raised its stock. But neither has India offered to do that for the Pak citizen. *****

VIEWS on NEWS The [Dis]Orderly System

The Parliamentary Panel has recommended to the Government of India to totally abolish the orderly system prevalent in the country under which senior police officials are provided with junior constables at their residences to attend to their personal work [which includes their family members as well]. This belated realization has to be commended for the simple reason that at last someone has acknowledged that these poor policemen, freshly recruited, are exploited. Whatever may be the reason for providing regular policemen for menial jobs at the residences of senior officers, they are treated as domestic helps something which is not flattering. They are Government servants simply posted at particular places. It is not clear what is the brief given to such orderlies. Are they supposed to do all sorts of menial jobs for their bosses and their families? It gives a feeling that they are supposed to be helping the officials in their office related work carrying their firearms, bags, uniforms etc. The House Panel is not in favour of the orderlies cooking and cleaning. Actually, this is more prevalent in the armed forces particularly the army. Juniors are made to do all sorts of jobs for their superiors who treat them badly and even exploited. Some of them are made to polish the shoes of their superiors. This is degrading and a legacy of the British Raj when they actually treated these orderlies as slaves. Now that the matter has come to the fore, the Ministry of Defence may be roped in to bring some dignity to their orderlies. The army can certainly tap local candidates wherever they are posted to find people to do the kind of job the higher army officials want them to do. They can be trained for the purpose. While the official moves to a different location, such trained people can continue to serve the next man in office. This could help locals in remote areas who find it hard to get jobs. *****

Running Riot Over Riots

The ghost of 1984 has come to haunt the Congress Party and the Government once again. It was last remembered in a big way when Jagdish Tytler was given Lok Sabha ticket in the 2009 elections. There was vociferous wide spread opposition especially from the Sikhs in general and the Akalis in particular. The BJP also joined the chorus for different reason. They wanted to embarrass the Congress Party. How could an accused be given a ticket? But when Amit Shah of Gujarat was given an Assembly ticket there was not even a murmur from the Akalis. While the issue will continue to be debated, the role of the Police force [rather no role to bring the situation under control] at the behest of the Congress leaders has acquired prominence. There are demands for fresh investigation of the case all over again under the direct supervision of the apex court. The Congress too must share the blame for keeping the riots issue alive. They did not allow the Gujarat riots episode to die down. The issue was raked at every possible opportunity to embarrass the BJP and Modi. Some NGOs also do likewise. Ultimately, the matter of riots has become a handy tool both for the Congress and the BJP. The Akalis have now taken things too far with their all out attack on the Congress and the Government. The verdict of a lower court exonerating Sajjan Kumar has inflamed passion to a new high. Had the Congress not kept the Gujarat riots issue alive, the 1984 riots would not have been exploited by the opposition. Not a good development for the Congress in a pre-election year, success in Karnataka notwithstanding.

If We Can't Have Women Priests... (Contd.. from p. 3) of England and Wales has consisted of some fine words, an expensive trip to Rome to pay him homage, and little else. History does not relate whether Francis was impressed by their visit, though it is not irrelevant that he discouraged Argentine Catholics from flocking to Rome for his installation, saying they would do better to spend the money on the poor. The Catholic laity do not want bishops who go around proclaiming, I m the boss. They want partnership with bishops who are ready to be held to account for their actions. And as in Buenos Aires under the man now called Francis, they want to be challenged by the Gospel, and in the name of Christ and the new Pope s namesake, to become the Church of the poor. Court Allows Demolition Of Church

Subsidy to Holy Land Pilgrimage

The CSF has been urging Christians to campaigning for subsidies to the Holy Land for those community members, who cannot afford it. If all goes well, Maharashtra will soon have some sort of subsidy for the Christians to visit Holy Land, thanks to BJP member of the legislative council, Adv. Ashish Shelar, who has taken up the issue with the state government.

Coimbatore: The Madras High Court has vacated the stay on the demolition of a 164-year-old church in Coimbatore, saying the structure has no heritage value. The ruling came on a petition filed by a former seminarian Thomas G Rathinaraj as the authorities of the St. MichaelÂ’s Church at Big Bazaar Street were planning to demolish the present structure. They want to construct a new and spacious church that can accommodate over 2,500 believers at a time. The court dismissed the petition praying to stop the demolition observing that the work to raze down the structure has already begun and there was a considerable delay in filing the case against it. "The commissioner of Archaeology, Government of Tamil Nadu, has said that though the church is more than 100-years-old, it has no sculptures, inscriptions or any unique artis-

tic interest, and the church had undergone repairs, alterations, additions, and extensions number of times with modern materials,” the court said. As for the present condition of the church, the bench said, "as per photographs, it is evident that more than 75 per cent of the demolition work is already over and only the remains of doom are existing and in the nearby places schools are located, where children are playing and unless the said debris and existing doom are removed immediately, it may endanger the life of the children and general public." Welcoming the court verdict, parish priest P Maria Joseph said the decision to build a new church was taken after finding that the present structure was too weak to withstand the vagaries of nature. Rathinaraj, who is presently working in Rome, said he would file an appeal against the order.

In his letter, Ashish Shelar stated that the estimated cost for pilgrimages to the Holy Land is approximately Rs. 79,000/- and it has been observed that community members, are unable to pay this amount due to financial constraints. However it is the heart-felt wish of every Christian to visit the Holy Land at least once in his lifetime. In Maharashtra, Christians, numbering over 18 lakhs are concentrated largely in the coastal belt of the state, especially in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and other districts. This gesture would benefit and help the economically backward in the community to undertake the once-in-a-life time pilgrimage. The CSF urges Christians who would like to contact him in this regard, to write to him at ashishmlclotus@gmail.com

slam may be most closely associ ated with the Middle East, where it emerged in Arabia in the seventh century, but today the region is home to only one in five of the world's Muslims, according to a study of the religion's global distribution. The world's Muslim population stands at 1.57 billion, meaning that nearly one in four people practise Islam, according to the US Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, which published the survey. This compares to 2.25 billion Christians. The top five Muslim countries in the world include only one in the Middle East - Egypt - behind Indonesia, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, in that order. Russia, the survey shows, has more Muslims than the populations of Libya and Jordan combined. Germany has more Muslims than Lebanon. China has a bigger Muslim population than Syria. The work, the largest of its kind, was the result of three years of research examining data from 232 countries and territories. The portrait it provides of Islam's distribution could have a profound influence on public policy in the west, and on attempts by the US, British and other governments to reach out to Muslims. Extrapolating the figures from the survey, the Islam that is largely practised around the world, particularly in large swaths of Asia, is more moderate and integrated than its stereotypical characterisation as an often militant and intolerant faith. The reality, as described by Mapping the Global Muslim Population, is that two out of three Muslims are Asians, while the 38 million Muslims in Europe, if treated as a separate group, would be the ninth largest in the world, behind Turkey, with a population of 71 million, and ahead of Algeria, with 34 million. Pew Forum, in consultation with nearly 50 demographers and social scientists at universities and research

8

centres around the world, analysed about 1,500 sources, including census reports, demographic studies and general population surveys, to arrive at their figures. The research is the first step in projecting growth trends in the world's Muslim population, and a similar survey is planned by the Pew Forum on the distribution of Christians. "This whole idea that Muslims are Arabs and Arabs are Muslims is really just obliterated by this report," said Amaney Jamal, an assistant professor of politics at Princeton University. "There are these countries that we

A Study On World Muslim Population don't think of as Muslim at all, and yet they have very sizeable numbers of Muslims," said Alan Cooperman, associate director of research for the Pew Forum, naming India, Russia and China. Islam had a huge geographic reach - from the Atlantic coast to central Asia - within a century of the prophet Muhammad's death, but until now its modern global profile was based on rough estimates. The Pew Forum study depicts the world's second largest religion as complex and nuanced, challenging the notion that its trajectory is defined by a minority of Islamists. Significantly, one in five of Muslims now lives in a country where they are represented as a religious minority, with three-quarters of that number concentrated in five countries: India (161 million), Ethiopia (28 million), China (22 million), Russia (16 million) and Tanzania (13 million). The survey also attempted to quantify the relative sizes of the two main branches of Islam - Sunni and Shia - but came up against the difficulty that many national demographers did not distinguish between the two. It

ended up suggesting that Shias, concentrated largely in four countries including Iran and Pakistan, probably made up between 10 and 13% of Muslims. Brian Grim, one of the researchers, said: "We started on this work because the estimates for the number of the world's Muslims ranged so widely, from 1 billion to 1.8 billion. For people who do this kind of work, perhaps the figures are not surprising but there are a lot of highly educated people who do not know that one in four are Muslim." Grim believes that the methodical demographic nature of the survey, identifying each Muslim population, may help to challenge preconceptions and prejudices about Islam. For Grim, one of the most surprising figures to emerge was just how many of the world's Islamic population is living as a minority. Maha Azzam, an associate fellow of Chatham House and an expert on Islam, said : "I think the survey is excellent and does help with the understanding of Islam. It is still associated for too many people with politics and conflict - issues such as Palestine and Iraq and more recently Afghanistan and Pakistan. What it shows is that Islam exists in many countries but crucially across many different cultures - some where it is tolerated and some where it is not. "The sheer scale of the world's Muslim population and its spread should encourage people to ask more questions about why so many people are Muslims and what they really believe. It shows there are Muslims in societies and areas that people don't immediately think of. But there are still many people who assume the majority of Muslims are Arabs." She cautioned, however, saying: "I feel that any report can be alarmist in the minds of some people. They see the numbers and see how many there are of 'them'. It depends on the reader."

2.2 Billion: World s Muslim Population Doubles The world s Muslim population is expected to increase by about 35% in the next 20 years, rising from 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.2 billion by 2030, according to new population projections by the Pew Research Center s Forum on Religion & Public Life. Globally, the Muslim population is forecast to grow at about twice the rate of the nonMuslim population over the next two decades an average annual growth rate of 1.5% for Muslims, compared with 0.7% for non-Muslims. If current trends continue, Muslims will make up 26.4% of the world s total projected population of 8.3 billion in 2030, up from 23.4% of the estimated 2010 world population of 6.9 billion. While the global Muslim population is expected to grow at a faster rate than the nonMuslim population, the Muslim population nevertheless is expected to grow at a slower pace in the next two decades than it did in the previous two decades. From 1990 to 2010, the global Muslim population increased at an average annual rate of 2.2%, compared with the projected rate of 1.5% for the period from 2010 to 2030.

B

y 2030 the global population is set to reach over 8 billion and 26.4% of that population will be Muslim. A report by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life titled The Future of the Global Muslim Population projects that the number of Muslims in the world is set to double from 1.1billion in 1990 to 2.2 billion in 2030. While these are impressive numbers, it actually indicates that the worldwide growth of Islam is growing but slowing as it will drop from a growth rate of 1.7% between 2010 and 2020 to 1.4% between 2020 and 2030. Pew project that Pakistan is set to overtake Indonesia as the country with the world s largest number of Muslim s as it s Muslim majority population pushes to over 256 million. The number in the U.S. will double to over 6.2 million while Afghanistan s Muslim population is set to rise by almost 74% as the number rises from 29 million to 50 million, making it the country with the ninth largest Muslim population in the world. Better living conditions combined with increased life-expectancy in Muslim majority countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa, net migration and global population growth are given as the main factors driving the growth.

May 20, 2013

Despite the projection, Muslims will remain a relatively small minority in the Americas and European countries and the Christian majority in these countries is expected to be just as impressive. While Islam has experienced rapid growth in worshipers of all denominations, it is likely that it will not overtake Christianity as the most dominant world religion as the number of Christians is expected to also reach 2.2billion by 2030. Between them, these two major world religions will make up over half of the Global population at almost 33 per cent by 2030. There has been a lot of speculation about the growth of the Muslim population around the world, and many of those who speculate don t have good data, said Brian Grim, a senior researcher at the Pew Forum. Instead of a runaway train, it s trending with the general global population. This will provide a garbage filter for hysterical claims people make about the size and growth of the Muslim population, Philip Jenkins, a religious history scholar in Christianity and Islam told the Washington Post. Certainly with the world population set to reach 8.3 billion by 2030 the explosive growth of world religions is just as impressive.

Muslims In India India is projected to remain as the third-largest Muslim population (in absolute numbers) in the world by 2030, following Pakistan and Indonesia. The Muslim population in India is projected to increase from 177.3 million in 2010 to 236.2 million in 2030. The Muslim share of India's population is expected to increase from 14.6 pc in 2010 to 15.9 pc in 2030. More than one-in-ten of the world's Muslims (10.8 pc) will live in India in 2030, about the same as in 2010. India's Muslim population is expected to grow at a slower rate in the next 20 years than it did in the previous two decades. The Muslim population in India increased by 76.4 million from 1990 to 2010; it is expected to grow by 58.9 million between 2010 and 2030. Fertility rates for all populations in India have been declining in recent years, in part because of increasing use of birth control. However, Muslims in India continue to have more children on average than non-Muslims, mainly because Muslims' use of birth control still falls below the national average, reports Pew. Muslims in India are poorer and less educated than other religious groups.

A Clarion Call From Karnataka!

T

he people of Karnataka have done India proud! By decimat ing the BJP at the hustings, they have clearly demonstrated that the fundamental principles of the Constitution of India: Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity can never be sacrificed at the altar of an ideology which is fascist - based on hate and divisiveness. Apart from the fact that the BJP suffered from internal squabbles and was steeped in corruption of immense proportion, one cannot overlook the fact that the minorities in the State were systematically targeted these past years. Anti-people laws which went against the livelihood of people, the ascent of a "moral brigade" who decided on what people should do and what they should not, were among other issues which were not taken too kindly by the people of Karnataka. Modi was expected to be the trump-card of the BJP but since there were clear indicators that the battleground was not too favourable for the BJP (and he usually goes only where he can fool people or is sure of vic-

tory), he campaigned in just three constituencies all of which met with disastrous results for his party! The half-truths and the lies which he foisted on people and very particularly about the so-called "development model" of Gujarat which is only pro-rich and pro-vested interests, did not cut ice with the people who went to hear him. When the social indicators of Gujarat State are far below several other States in the country; where a 'Freedom of Religion Law' contravenes Article 25 of the Constitution and where in Modi's own constituency, Maninagar, right-wing Hindu elements have decided that from 2015, the State of Gujarat will become a "Hindu State", there is precious little that the thinking citizen of the country can really expect, from such a person.

The people of Karnataka have also sent a strong message to the Congress who, at this - Fr. Cedrick moment, are also Prakash SJ riddled with scams, corruption, indecisiveness and an arrogance which seems to permeate different levels. They have been given yet another chance; so they need to get their house in order as soon as possible in Karnataka, otherwise the same fate of the BJP awaits them. This is also a timely warning for political parties of all hues who continue to rough-shod the people of the country: parliament has been disrupted, important bills have not been passed and the tax-payer is expected to meet the expenses of these socalled law-makers! The people of Karnataka have today given a clarion call, 'do not take, we the people, for granted!'

Sex Superbug' Feared To Be More Infectious Than Aids' Discovered In Hawaii Hawaii News Now reports that the 'sex superbug' is a resistant strain of gonorrhea. The 'sex superbug' called H041 was first discovered in Japan in 2011. It spread to Hawaii, and has now surfaced in California and Norway. Peter Whiticir with the State Department of Health says advisories have been sent to physicians and health care providers around Hawaii to be on the lookout for the resistant strain of gonorrhea. Doctors are warning that an antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhoea, now considered a superbug, has the potential to be as deadly as the AIDS virus. Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection in North America.

This might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly, Alan Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine told CNBC. Nearly 30 million people have died from AIDS related causes worldwide, but Christianson believes the effect of the gonorrhea bacteria is more direct.

Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days, Christianson said. This is very dangerous. Although no deaths from HO41 have been reported as yet, experts say avoiding the disease completely is the best course of action. People need to practice safe sex, like always, Christianson said. Anyone beginning a new relationship should get tested along with their partner. 'The way gonorrhea works, not everyone knows they have it. And with this new strain it's even more important than ever to find out.

Mumbai: East Indian Community Gets Museum The East Indian community will acquire its first full-fledged museum this month. This, after members pooled in resources to fund a makeover to the initial make-shift museum that was housed in thatched huts in Manori. The East Indian museum, housed in a 40x12 feet wooden structure, will be formally opened on May 19 as part of the annual festival organised by the Mobai Gaothan Panchayat (MGP). The festival will begin on May 11. The MGP had previously set up a museum at the family house of sarpanch Alphi D souza in 2011. The make-shift museum was inside thatched huts made of coconut leaves. However, the structures were too rudimentary and they had succumbed to the rain. The new museum is being set up with donations from community members from 189 gaothans in the

city. The total contribution, so far, has been Rs4 lakh, said D souza. We did not accept any form of contribution from other communities or corporate houses. The community had put forth a request to the state government for a land to house the museum about six months ago. However, when they failed to get any response from the state, the MGP began construction at Mobai Bhavan last month. The bhavan serves as the MGP head office. The museum will feature artefacts

collected from various East Indian households. They will be showcased under various sections such as traditional kitchen, occupation and weddings. Visitors will get to see musical instruments of the original inhabitants like the ghumat (an earthen pot-like instrument made of animal skin) and how the inhabitants cooked food in large vessels like the foram (used to cook an entire pig). We will now have detailed descriptions of every artefact in Marathi as well as English. We will also use the rest of the compound to showcase traditional bullock carts, ploughing equipment and models of salt pans, said D souza. The community plans to put up advertisements of the museum on ferry boats. We want to attract more tourists and we will put up banners on the ferry, if possible, said D Souza.

3G Problems?

Try the Lord s Prayer

S

ome time ago, slain Boston Bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaey re marked, on his face book site, that there are no prevalent societal values today. The Bible is a lighthouse in the sea of troubled times. Today, the world is engulfed in 3-G problems: Gun violence, Gay marriages, and Gang rapes. Up till the time the Bible was taught in schools, there was no gun violence in schools. After the 1999 Columbine massacre, the world has seen about 31 school shootouts. Now the Islamic prayers have been introduced into Toronto and other public schools in Ontario and in Ottawa too, while the Lord's Prayer, termed offensive, was removed! A young man in Mumbai once visited a Hindu doctor and complained of deep depression, darkness, and tension. He even contemplated suicide. The doctor, a Brahmakumari, asked the patient, Are you a Christian? Do you recite the Lord s Prayer? The young man confirmed that, as a practicing catholic, he recited the Lord s Prayer several times a day. The doctor then asked him a very challenging question, Is your recitation robotic? Does your Our Father prayer rise beyond the ceiling?

The World Is Engulfed In 3-G Problems: Gun Violence, Gay Marriages, And Gang Rapes.

- Denis Khan The Lord s Prayer is a symbiotic silver umbilical cord. (Ecclesiastes 12:7) mirrors our Breath with our Divine Father God. We combine our weakness with God s Strength. When the Apostles asked Jesus to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1), like all monotheistic believers, they already prayed three to five times a day. Muslims pray five times a day to remind themselves that their home is in heaven, and life on earth is a transient journey. Daniel prayed three times a day (Daniel 6:11). The Apostles were astounded that Jesus Called God Our Father . Till then, God was Jehovah , the tribal God of the Hebrews, meting out fiery eye for- an- eye Mosaic justice. Jesus portrayed a Loving Trinitarian Elohim Father God, Powerful Holy Spirit, mirrored in the resplendent Image of the Son, Dwelling in a realm of unap-

proachable light (1 Timothy6:16). God is A Supernatural Power unapproachable by Man. The Prodigal Son, after sinning, says, I will arise, and go unto my Father. (Luke15:18). Next follows the heartfelt expression of dependence upon God Give us this day our daily bread. One day, as Habakkuk was going towards his field with his lunch pail, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, Carry this dinner to Daniel in the lions den in Babylon . Habakkuk replied, I have never seen Babylon, nor do i know who Daniel is. The Angel of the Lord caught Habakkuk by the hair and air dropped him into the lions den in Babylon. O Daniel, servant of the Living God, said Habakkuk, Take the dinner God has sent you. Daniel thanked God for remembering him, and ate the food. The Angel of the Lord whisked Habakkuk back into his field. (Daniel.14:33 -39). The most difficult part of the Lord s Prayer is Forgiveness. A wound inflicted in the context of a love relationship is one of the most painful. The more we love, the more painful is the hurt. The wound becomes intense and difficult to heal, wedging our relationship. In Dead Man Walking, famous Pakistani singer plaintively sings, There is a sad spot in every human heart that only God Can Touch and Heal. We carry this spot to or graves. God is the Alpha who Created the world from an abysmal darkness of about 17 billion years (Genesis1:1 -4). God Understands and heals our wounds and Dispels our darkness. God is the Omega Who will lift us out of the grave when we return to the dust (Sirach17:1 -2) to celebrate Eternal Glory with Him in Heaven.

Why Conserving Natural Resource Is Important?

A

t the beginning of the human civilization, the earth was abun dant with all those natural resources that are essential for the survival of life. Water, air, greenery, were all aplenty. Then came the discovery of oil and gas, which began to be used for a variety of purposes. Over time, all the natural resources became the root of major inventions; water, oil and gas for electricity and travel, trees for paper and furniture, land for agriculture, development of living spaces, etc. There are many other uses of these natural resources. Because everything was available in abundance, no one ever considered the fact that casual use of these would slowly lead to their depletion. It is a known fact that if we are not careful, the survival of all life forms will become increasingly difficult. Conserving Natural Resources is Important as there is something called a balance in nature. As we continue to overuse natural resources, a serious imbalance has been caused. Deforestation, depletion of oil and gas, shortage of water and power, soil erosion leading to lack of agricultural growth, are all contributing to environmental issues such as global warming and environmental pollution. Interestingly, it is these environmental issues that are leading to further shortage of natural resources. Simply put, we are trapped in a vicious circle. Environmentalists have already predicted major shortages and even the complete extinction of natural resources such

as oil and gas, if we continue depleting these at the present rate.

Ways of Conserving Natural Resources Conserving Trees:

Trees give us the oxygen we breathe, the paper we use, the fruit we eat, the shade we need from the brutal sunlight, and are essential for the survival of wildlife. To save this important resource we can use only recycled paper products, whether you write on it or print on it. It takes a lot of trees to make a small amount of paper. Avoid using paper unnecessarily. For instance, printing every piece of information is not necessary. Sign up for ebilling and net banking services so that

Conserving Water:

Water is a basic resource for all our activities. We clean with water, we cook with water, and the production of every item of use requires the use of water. Several parts of the world are now facing a water shortage because of the way in which it is being used. Conserving this natural resource

paper bills and bank statements are avoided. Plant a tree. A lot of environmental agencies are giving away trees for adoption. We can plant a sapling in your name, and watch it grow over the years, as your bit for the environment. DonÂ’t limit conservation only to yourself and your home or office. is of prime importance for the stability of the environment. Firstly, if we have any leaky faucets or those that donÂ’t work properly, get them fixed. Every drop of water is precious. We should use a bucket of water to bathe rather than using the shower. We may not realize how much water you are wasting when you use a shower for a bath. The same goes for dishes. The use of water filled in a sink, or a tub can really help us save large amounts of this natural resource. Stop dumping things in the seas and rivers and lakes. Not only does marine life get affected, the water becomes polluted and dangerous for use thereafter. Try to harvest rainwater. We can use it to water your garden and plants.

Conserving Energy:

The prime use of energy comes

May 20, 2013

from oil and gas, which power the vehicles we drive. However, the increasing number of cars and the amount of pollution that is caused as a result is now becoming hazardous and leading to several health problems. Then comes electricity, the generation of which is becoming more and more difficult. Try to avoid using vehicle as much as possible. If living close to work place, choose to walk instead of taking car. It saves the environment and itÂ’s healthy for us too. Wherever and whenever possible, try to use a cycle as a means of transport. This is one of the best ways of conserving natural resources. One car per family is really enough. Try to use public transport. If a group of people choose this option, it means those many vehicles less on the streets, which means saving some gas, the prices of which are sky-rocketing because it is becoming so scarce. Invest in a hybrid

car that uses both electricity, and a small amount of gas to function. Invest in lower energy consuming lights and bulbs. Avoid the use of halogens and other such lights. Also remember to switch off all electrical appliances when not in use. When television, microwave oven, or computer is on standby it consumes electricity. Turn to solar energy. Nowadays, solar heaters, solar cookers, and a lot of other appliances that function on the energy provided by the sun are available. Investing in these helps save electricity as well as natural gas. Go for products such as air-conditioners and refrigerators that have energy star ratings. These consume lesser electricity and even reduce your bills, and definitely reduce the effects of global warming that is affecting all life forms. Natural resources conservation can be done in several other ways too. Simply making an effort to spread the word is a great way of doing your bit for the world you live in. Set an example for others to follow when it comes to the conservation of natural resources, that is so fundamental for the survival of mankind in these trying times.

To Father Salu Â… With Love

A Sunday School teacher read Mt 11:30 ‘My yoke is easy’ to the children in her class and then asked: “Who can tell what a yoke is?” One of the boys replied, “A yoke is something they put on the necks of animals so they can help each other.” Then the teacher asked, “What is the yoke Jesus puts on us?” A quiet little girl raised her hand and said, “It is God putting His arm around us.” All who knew Fr. Salu will agree that even in his suffering, Fr. never forgot the mercies God poured into his life. From the seen- food and shelter to family and friends; blessings many are deprived of, to the many unseen spiritual ones. Each day as he held the Word of God in his hand and read it, he had the knowledge of God’s saving grace, the comfort of His Spirit and the joyful assurance of life everlasting with Jesus. In Ps. 37, David exhorts us to have both patience and trust. “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will act” (V5). A committed believer, Fr. Salu sincerely followed and served the Lord, trusted Him implicitly, surrendering every area of his life to God’s wise control, especially if fear and panic overtook him. (personally I doubt they did) Fr. Salu’s prayer probably went something like this: “Lord take my life and make it wholly thine, Fill my poor heart with thy great love divine. Take all my will, my passion, self and pride; I now surrender, Lord- in me abide.” He always believed that, ‘PRAYER’ is the bridge between panic and peace.

1-95

As pilgrims journeying through this world, from time to time, seemingly fierce obstacles of illnesses, accidents, material losses and personal conflicts appear before us, striking fear into our lives. At first they may bewilder us and life itself may seem to arrive at a dead end. But then like Fr. Salu, by faith we can make our way to the Saviour, realizing we dare not go forward without His reassuring presence. As we trust completely in Him, He helps us face the future by walking every step of the way with us. He makes us a wonderful promise in Is. 41:10, “Do not fear…….righteous right hand’ and in a flash we realize—God is the only ally we can always count on when all seems lost!!!!! Fellowship is an essential part of what it means to be a Christian. The concept of Small Christian Communities (SCC) was very dear to Fr. Salu’s heart. He agonized over the way our SCC’s sometimes functioned. He often stressed on the need for us not to be content with just organizing events and being willing participants in the traditions and rituals of the faith. He envisaged a scenario where no one in a parish died because they could not afford medication or professional help, no student ended up being a drop-out due to a lack of funds, and no one went to bed on a hungry stomach because they did not have money to buy food. Fr. was convinced that you and I might be the only bibles our friends of other faiths might read and so for evangelization, it is important that our faith spells- ‘Love in action’. During his first tenure as Parish Priest of St. Michael, Mahim, my 2 sons were studying in St. Michael Primary School. (They later shifted to St. Stanislaus). I was

impressed by the way Fr. managed the School and the Parish. From the Sacristy to the Auditorium everything bore ‘THE SALU TOUCH’. He did all he could to upgrade the standard of the School. He organized school level competitions of various kinds, Sports included; for which he got the teachers and parents involved in planning, preparation and execution. Fr. Salu proudly presided over every one of these. During his second tenure, I was privileged to serve on the Parish Pastoral Council. With a heart full of gratitude, I can say there was much I learnt from this gently assertive, deeply spiritual and totally involved, ‘Servant of God’. I wish to end this obituary to Fr. Salu with the following words.

God knows every winding way you took Fr. Salu, And every sorrow, pain and ache; You are His child; He will not forsake youFor he knows and loves His own. R.I.P Fr. Salu

Singing Offertory Hymns During The Mass

On my recent visit to Canada, I attended mass at three parishes in Ontario province. What enlightened me there is; the beautiful singing of hymns sung by well trained choir. However, I was surprised to note the singing of offertory hymns at every parish - even at regular mass celebrations. I wish to point out here that why we are deprived of such practices in India and wish to know the reasons behind it. If the church doctrine for liturgical practices is same everywhere, then how come some are allowed to sing and others are not? Does the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) uses its own discretion in this matter, while the Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops (CCCB) finds no problem with it? As lay faithful, we are eager to sing hymns during offertory part and believe that the singing does not bring down the devotion in any manner. In fact the Bible itself is a huge volume of songs of worship. Even here, many priests encourage singing offertory hymns and St. MichaelÂ’s Church, Mahim is one example. So will the CBCI give it a thought to this age old and beautiful practice, to be allowed again for a glorious celebration of Holy Mass?

Live Tour Dreams Six entrepreneurs from Pune, Inspired by their motivation guru Manish Gupta Entrepreneurs generally complain that they are too busy to indulge in their hobbies. As they have to manage work by themselves, their dreams often get suppressed. But six entrepreneurs from the city have proved to be an exception. They are off to Kanyakumari on a bicycle expedition only for one purpose-to live their dreams. Yatin Tambe of Friction Welding Technologies, Amit Kshirsagar of Nissar Transformers, Sanjay Kharade of Autopower Gen Systems, Madhusudan Kashelikar and Dnyaneswar Bhiote of Shree Sant Dnyaneshwar English school, all in the age group of 35-48 are set to leave for Kanyakumari on their bicycles. Planning to reach their destinations in a span of 13 days, this is their first long bicycle tour. It is our ambitious tour.

May 20, 2013

Once we reach their, we will invite our families and enjoy travelling the city with them foe the next two days. We all are very excited said Tambe. All the participants of this bicycle expedition are members of a Chrysalis Entrepreneur Foruma forum for entrepreneurs based in Pune city. At the Chrysalis forum, all the members meet on the third Thursday every month and discuss their dreams. As a part of this forum, they also organize various motivational discussions in order to encourage the entrepreneurs to live their dreams. Founded by Manish Gupta, is well known as motivation guru in the circle of entrepreneurs. My motivation guru Manish Gupta, planted this idea in my mind. He made us all think that we too need a regular break from our routine. Just like the salaried employees take holiday, we must also leave the work behind for few days as we work hard throughout the year. So, we started an initiative called live your dream under which we will be undertaking. Such adventures every year, he added. This is not the first adventure tour for the group. In the past, Tambe, along with friends who are entrepreneurs as well have completed a motorcycle ride from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in 12 days. Also, they visited Pattaya to experience the thrill of sky diving. Talking about the various adventure experiences, Tambe said, There is a lot of stress while working. Being entrepreneur, we have to handle and manage the entire work. When we decide to go on this motorcycle tour from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, everybody told us that it is not possible. As it is the financial year-end, all the businessmen are too busy. But we wanted to prove that it is possible to work hard and enjoy equally. A day prior to the day the team leaves for the expedition, gear up ceremony has been organized to motivate the team and show support towards their dreams. The event will also include a power talk by Manish Gupta. The motivational story of this team will definitely leave every person inspired.
