Mumbai Diocese Gets Two Auxiliar y Bishops Auxiliary The Episcopal Consecration of the two new bishops is planned for June 29, 2013.

Fr. Savio Dominic Fernandes

Bombay is considered the most populous Catholic diocese in India having over 521,000 Catholics, 591 priests and 10 permanent deacons. Mumbai: Pope Francis on Wednesday appointed two auxiliary bishops for the archdiocese of Bombay to assist its Cardinal Oswald Gracias. The new prelates are Father Savio Dominic Fernandes, currently the archdiocesan chancellor, and Father John Rodrigues, dean of St. Pius X College at Goregaon, Bombay. Bombay is considered the most populous Catholic diocese in India having 521,000 Catholics, 591 priests and 10 permanent deacons. In 2010, Cardinal Gracias suffered from a rare cancer and underwent surgeries and is currently said to be cancerfree though this illness affected his body making him thin. On 13 April, Pope Francis appointed him to a group cardinals established to advise him on revising the Roman Curia. The work could take his time and energy away from the diocese. Three auxiliary bishops normally serve the archdiocese, but it currently has only one--Auxiliary bishop Agnelo Rufino Gracias. Two others, Percival Fernandez, 77, and Bosco Penha, 76, retired upon reaching the canonical retirement age of 75. Bishop-elect Fernandes was born in Mumbai in 1954 and was ordained a priest in 1989. Since ordination he has served in several pastoral, judicial, and administrative roles. He is chancellor since 2010. Pope Francis has assigned him the Titular See of Cozila, Vatican Information Service said. Bishop-elect Rodrigues was born in Mumbai in 1967

Fr. John Rodrigues and was ordained a priest in 1998. Since ordination he has served in several pastoral and academic roles. He is dean of studies at St. Pius X College in Goregaon since 2011. He is assigned to the Titular See of Deulto. The archdiocese has a land area 10,103.4 square kilometers and covers the civil districts of Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Thane and Raigad.

Fr. Jose Narlaly Re-elected Head Of The Order Of The Most Holy Trinity Madrid: Fr. Jose Narlaly has been elected as the superior general of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity for the second time. The appointment comes during the general chapter of the congregation held in Madrid, Spain from May 19. Fr. Narlaly, who belongs to Karoor parish in Irinjalakuda diocese, is one of the founding members of the order in India. The Order, which is 815 years old, has several houses in about 24 countries and its members are actively working for those persecuted for their faith in Christ, strengthening the faith of Christians in difficult situations and performing work of mercy wherever they are.

Pope Takes Another Swipe At The Global ‘Cult Of Money' Vatican City: Pope Francis has called on world leaders to put an end to the "cult of money" and to do more to help the poor, warning that insecurity was rising in many regions of the world and the "joy of life" was diminishing in developed countries. "The worship of the golden calf of old has found a new and heartless image in the cult of money and the dictatorship of an economy which is faceless and lacking any truly human goal," Francis said in an address to ambassadors to the Vatican on Thursday. Francis said that radical free-market ideologies had created "a new, invisible, and at times virtual, tyranny" and human beings "considered as consumer goods" and called for global financial reform that would benefit everyone. "Solidarity, which is the treasure of the poor, is often considered counterproductive, opposed to the logic of finance and the economy. While the income of a minority is increasing exponentially, that of the majority is crumbling," he said. "I encourage the financial exports and the political leaders of your countries to consider the words of St John Chrysostom "Not to share one's goods with the poor is to rob them", he said.

The Argentine pope, formerly the archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became a powerful voice on the side of the poor during his homeland's devastating economic crisis.

Increasing transparency The Vatican Bank, a centre of scandals for decades, is to launch its own website and publish its annual report in an effort to increase transparency, its new president said. Ernst von Freyberg told the bank's employees of the changes, which should be in place by the end of the year, this week, according to Vatican Radio. He also said the bank, formally known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR) and dubbed the world's most secretive bank by Forbes magazine, had also hired an auditing firm to make sure it meets international standards against money laundering. Freyberg was appointed in February to take the place of Ettore Gotti Tedeschi who was fired last May. Gotti Tedeschi said he was dismissed because he wanted more transparency but the board, made up of international financial experts, said he had neglected basic management re(Contd.. on p. 4)

His abrupt departure, along with the arrest of Pope Benedict's butler for stealing confidential papal documents, came during a leaks scandal that shook the Vatican last year and contributed to Benedict's decision to resign. The Vatican has been trying to shed its image as a murky financial centre since 1982, when Roberto Calvi, known as "God's Banker" because of his links to the Vatican, was found hanging from London's Blackfriars Bridge. Calvi was head of the Banco Ambrosiano, then Italy's largest private bank, which collapsed in a fraudulent bankruptcy.

Tawadros invited Francis to Egypt. The late pope John Paul II visited the country in 2000. Vatican City: The Catholic and Coptic Orthodox churches are in a position to settle their historical rifts, Pope Francis said Friday as he welcomed his Coptic counterpart, Tawadros II.

The Vatican bank owned part of the Ambrosiano. In July, a European anti-money laundering committee said the Vatican Bank failed to meet all its standards on fighting money laundering, tax evasion and other financial crimes. The report by Moneyval, a monitoring group of the 47-nation Council of Europe, found the Vatican had passed only nine of 16 "key and core" aspects of its financial dealings. Jesus Christ had asked St. Peter to allow only 500 souls into heaven. One day during a random checkup he found the number was 550, when asked St.Peter said that he had sent only 500 but it is possible that the remaining 50 were sent by his merciful mother through the back door. —Victor M. It was the first such visit to the Vatican by a Coptic pope in 40 years and Tawadros' first trip outside Egypt since being enthroned in November. His predecessor Shenouda III met with then-pope Paul VI in 1973. Francis recounted that the leaders of the two churches met at that time "in an embrace of peace and fraternity after centuries of mutual distance," setting them on a path of theological rapprochement. "I am convinced that under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our persevering prayer, our dialogue and the will to build communion day-by-day in mutual love will allow us to take important further steps towards full unity," Francis said. Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's mostly Muslim population of 84 million. They have voiced concerns about their future under Islamist rule. Tawadros invited Francis to Egypt. A Very Messy Affair N. Srinivasan, BCCI chief called a press conference to tell the world why he was not resigning though his sonin-law. Though Guru has been accepted as the de-facto face of the CSK owned by the BCCI chief, he failed to tell the world what was Guru’s role. The owner admitted he does not know, so a commission has been appointed to find out what exactly was his role. Very hilarious! But Rajiv Shukla, IPL Chief knew it. How would he know without being told so by the CSK owners? So we appoint a commission [with majority members from the BCCI itself, all solidly backing the chief, as he declared openly] with just one independent ‘outsider’. It looks more like a JPC and the outcome of such committees is too well known to warrant a guess. Findings will be [a] Guru has over stepped his so called role of an enthusiast and he was not officially the face of CSK. [b] Therefore, CSK has not violated clause 11.3. [c] CSK should be fined for letting Guru near the dugout [d] Gurunath should remain suspended for five years [e] Srinivasan is therefore untarnished and can continue to be the Chief and even eligible for extension. [f] Media and detractors over reacted – Amen. Srini dwelt at length on the issue of how the Board, with profits generated from the IPL, has rewarded excricketers ranging from 25 lacs to 100 lacs. Past cricketers accepted the cheques with glee and were happy to be photographed. Some of them apologized for their past indiscretions of going against the BCCI. Incidentally, some of recipients have openly criticized the IPL and the present mess. Should these principled cricketers not return the cash bounty in protest? They want to keep the huge loot paid to them from the messy IPL. Only we spectators are the losers. Finally, the Mumbai Indians came back remarkably to lift the Trophy. Though Guru got things wrong, John got it Wright for the winning team. *****

VIEWS on NEWS Late It is amusing to note that the Central Vigilance Commission [CVC], under whom the CBI functions, has woken up rather late in the day and sought an explanation on why the report was shown to the Ministers and bureaucrats. The CBI in the first place ought to have sought the consent of the CVC before acceding to the request [or summons] of the Government to share the confidential report. The very fact that it was by-passed and thereafter everything was done to suppress the issue only shows that everybody concerned was a party to the clandestine operations. As the term suggests, the CVC should have exercised better vigilance and should have been able to find out what is happening. It is rather strange that they should now demand explanation only after the strictures were passed by the apex court. One wonders if no such comments came from the highest court, would the CVC have still asked for any explanation. The news about the sharing of the report with those in power surfaced about a week earlier and naturally the CVC also would have heard about it. What prevented them from asking for the explanation without waiting for the Supreme Court? By not being proactive, it gives an impression that the CVC was ‘comfortable’ with the sharing of the report. This action on the part of the CVC is either an after thought or it was not ‘vigilant’ enough to know what was happening. The duty of the vigilance cell is to keep its eyes and ears wide open to pre-empt any wrong doing and not to act only when things have come in public domain. The very purpose of putting the CBI under its supervision was to ensure that it is not allowed to go astray. I am not sure if the apex court should have also berated the CVC for failing in its duty of keeping a vigilant eye on the happenings between the CBI and the Government. *****

CVC Wakes Up Rather Congress, The Lesser Evil June 3, 2013

by Marshall Sequeira The election results in Karnatka recently, conveyed just one thing. The people of this country have a limited choice when it comes to elections. You either choose the bigger evil or settle for the lesser one. B S Yeddyuarappa [BSY], the main culprit who managed to decimate the BJP, also managed to destroy himself in the process. His right hand man when told that his party was expected to win 12 while the Congress would bag 112 to 120, ridiculed it saying when final results are out, his party will get at least 45 while Congress will not cross 100. He also had the temerity to say that BSY will become the CM. The party got just six seats. That is what we call over confidence. The BJP, as expected, is downplaying the loss. They know what it is to lose the only foothold in the South. They may be in for bigger shocks with intense infighting within the core group. What was just a whisper has now become gossip. Narendra Modi is jittery. He had to do something drastic even if it meant a U-turn [by deciding not to plead for death sentence] in Maya Kodnani case to please the Shiv Sena to garner its support. Narendra Modi has always maintained that he is not aspiring for the prime minister-ship but just wants to ‘serve’ the people. Very laudable statement! We all lapped it. Actually, no aspirant for the coveted post admits candidly. They are very humble people who are willing to give their lives [at the cost of our lives] for the cause of the nation. By the way, will Modi publicly declare that he is willing to ‘serve’ the people as a Union Minister under any other BJP PM say L.K.Advani, Sushma Swaraj or Arun Jaitley? That would be his litmus test.

alking through the maze of narrow pathways hemmed in by steep walls of old houses on either side increases one’s claustrophobia to choking fear. Negotiating through obstacles and puddles needs all one’s manoeuvring skills and I thank God I do it not more than twice a month. How could a fool like me rush in here where angels fear to tread? This must be a lost world where in the absence of sun, sky and wind a shroud of greyness covers the place. Every dark nook and corner, each crumbling wall and mound of debris speaks of the abject poverty that compels my brethren to walk, talk and live here like living zombies all their lives. If I cannot walk here once, how do they live here? Like me, hundreds of Faithful participating in the Holy Eucharist in Churches in Mumbai were privileged to hear the Good News that Sunday. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.” To those who have ears, this Word itself can serve as an invitation from the Lord to be his instruments and continue his mission on earth. How many of us make time to respond to the Lord? Each parish in Mumbai has been bestowed with a fair share of the

6

Vera Alvares marginalised, downtrodden and broken-hearted brethren, living behind the screens, visible only to the seeking spirit. This lost world does not offer many opportunities to its denizens to keep body and soul together, a task that preoccupies them, taking priority over religion. And rightly so says a man of God, noted for his zeal in uplifting the poor and needy. For the poor, blind, captives, hungry, oppressed and the heart-broken Jesus has still to appear in the form of his disciples- you and me, the anointed ones! Till then our horizons will not meet, our worlds cannot merge. Those among them, who put in a casual appearance at Mass, blend successfully with the congregation of worshippers in the church. Nothing visibly sets them apart; nothing reveals their handicaps and poverty. So when will Jesus appear to “bring Good news to the poor…..”? Mumbai Archdiocese is dotted with many lost worlds co-existing on the brink somewhere without the knowledge of the privileged church-goers. Our comfort zones are broad roads built systematically, comprising relaxation, entertainment, social networking….. But the path to the lost world is narrow and full of hurdles to the fainthearted. It needs a missionary zeal to venture on this road that leads to contentment and joy for the people living in both the worlds- the privileged and the lost! David Livingstone was the first missionary to penetrate the heart of deep Africa. He suffered pneumonia, chol-

era, tropical ulcers, starvation, and attacks by lions and savages. One day he received a message that there were some men who wanted to come to assist him in the work...but they would need to find a good road to get to his location. He replied, “If you have men who will come only if there is a good road, I don’t want them. I want men who will come even if there is no road at all.” “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me….” Those anointed few, responding to the call to go where there is no road at all are already working in the vineyards of the Lord as Missionaries, dwelling in remote areas facing untold hardships to bring Good News to the poor. There are lay people working shoulder to shoulder sharing, serving and caring for the lost and feeble sheep that cannot keep up with the flock….and that is their prayer. The visionaries may be many, but the workers are few! Walking through the maze of narrow pathways hemmed in by steep walls of old houses on either side into that lost world……this path leads to the tiny ramshackle room where Julie lives, caring for her old mother and a brother who is mentally disabled. The dirty walls enclose a space smaller than a stable with a bed and few pieces of clothing thrown about. They survive without water, washroom, drainage and no apparent source of income. Yet they have taken in another stray sheep into their fold. Sandra, nearing forty, seems to be on the wrong side of fifty as she cleans floors in the commercial establishments around the area where she adds to the numbers of floating population. A native of the very same Gaothan, she has been swindled of her share of property and tossed out on the streets by her own siblings! The good Samaritans of the locality are her providers and guardians, the anointed ones with the Spirit of the Lord upon them.

Joanna Soares has spent the last few years behind the door of her tiny room surrounded by rotting wooden planks and pieces her son brings home in the hope of obtaining carpentry work, a trade he knows nothing about. Hailing from a village near Mangalore she came as a young girl to work as a house helper and has never returned. Now sitting on her mat on the floor she reminisces about the rolling fields and clear blue sky of the childhood days as tears begin to dot the old grey eyes. All of eighty four, frail but pretty she focuses on a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus which is her altar, Mass and church all rolled into one. With a slight smile playing at the corner of her lips she tells us that the lack of proper nourishment is the only ailment she suffers from! The fact that the basic needs of food, clothing, sanitation and shelter of these people are not met is not so obvious unless one sees them against their own background, because our world does not intrude on theirs. But they are there, and if we care to listen, their nearly inaudible voices can be heard appealing, “I feel that there is something that I need, that will comfort me and let me know that my life has a purpose and importance, that I belong to someone, somewhere”. In 1945, Alma Androzzo penned these meaningful words in a song“If I can help somebody as I pass along; If I can cheer somebody with a word or song, If I can show somebody he is traveling wrong; Then my living shall not be in vain. If I can do my duty as a Christian ought; If I can bring back beauty to a world upwrought, If I can spread love’s message that the Master taught, Then my living shall not be in vain.” Opportunities to share the living water are plenty and can be found at the well of willingness...so walk that narrow path and spread the message the Master taught!

gation for the Propagation of Faith (Propaganda Fide). Among the latter there were only 5 Indian bishops from among the Syro-Malabar Vicariate. All the Latin rite diocese had European bishops – 27 of them. Another interesting observation is that only the Goa (Padroado) dioceses and Syro-Malabar Vicariates had diocesan clergy. All the other dioceses were entrusted to Religious Orders. Leading the pack were the Capuchins with 6, followed by the Jesuits and Paris Foreign Missions (PIME) with 5 each, and the Mill Hill Missionaries, Fransalians and Discalced Carmelites with 2 each. There were no Salesians, the pioneering missionaries of the North East. Barring Kashmir, which had the Mill Hills, the vast “cow belt” of North India was under the Capuchins. Unfortunately they, especially those from Italy, had absolutely no clue about missionary work or evangelization. They remained confined to cantonments and railway colonies. In today’s IT enabled world data collection and sorting is child’s play. But back in 1912 there were no calculators or telephones, let alone mobiles, email and computers. Yet the compilers of these CDIs worked with what we once euphemistically called “missionary zeal”, to leave us a wealth of information. There are even figures of infant and adult baptisms, marriages and communions. Truly we must salute the missionaries of yesteryears, and emulate their sacrifice and dedication. The CDI 1912 has an article “The Census of Christianity” by one Rev (not Fr) J.C. Houpert SJ. Several of his statements bear repetition. I quote: “Comparisons of our decennial results for the number of Catholics, with those of British Indian Governments since 1871 shows that the church census gives somewhat higher figures”. We need to recall that the British began the censuses in 1871. Even today the Govt census is far more objective and scientific than the church’s method of data gathering. So to the church’s claims (not only of Catholics) are far higher than what the Census of India shows. “The number of Catholics in India has nearly doubled in the last forty years, and the number of European priests far more than doubled; while that of the sisters both foreign and indigenous has increased six fold … Public churches and chapels more than doubled … the schools

8

and colleges trebled, and charitable institutions increased more than four fold”. The pattern does not seem to have changed. In 1901, for every 1000 Catholics in the Indian empire, 28 were European, 34 were Eurasian and 934 (93%) were natives. Today we can legitimately claim that we are authentically Indian (at least in numbers). We would be even more authentic if we were not so dependant on foreign aid. Houpert now makes the stunning observation that the figures “show that action taken for the starting of provincial or all India Catholic associations is in no way premature”. Sadly, 100 years later, the Indian hierarchy still acts as though the time is not ripe for organized lay leadership! I hold the hierarchy and clergy responsible for this glaring act of omission. Some blame must also be shared by a spineless and ignorant lay leadership that is unable or unwilling to assert its ecclesiological and canonical rights. Houpert’s next observation encapsulates the history of the church in India. “It is now a settled fact, that after a checkered life-history, from the apostolic age downward, through a stagnant, long millennium, followed by the balmy days of French and Portuguese missionary zeal, inspite of the hostility of the Dutch, the suppression of the Society of Jesus, the persecution of Tipu, and the internal troubles about rites and jurisdiction, the Catholic Church has again, for the last sixty years, alongwith the pacific and liberal British rule, led with vigour her vast enterprise in India”. Most impartial historians will agree with Houpert’s observation that the church in India was stagnant for well nigh 1500 years, confined to the Malabar coast from apostolic times till the advent of European missionaries. The question of jurisdiction between the Goa based Padroado and the rest was also a deterrent, dividing the church in erstwhile Bombay and Madras-Mylapore. Houpert was a man ahead of his times (most Jesuits think they are)! He says, “All work on Catholicism in India would lose much of its relative value, were it to omit the large non-Catholic bodies that live by its side … Both Catholics and Protestants increase chiefly by pioneer work among aborigines and semi-Hindus and by a favourable birth rate among Christians”. In an era of fierce inter-denominational rivalry Houpert was talking of an ecumenical approach. Besides, the mission thrust among tribals (aborigines) and dalits (semi-Hindus) remains unchanged.

Houpert treats us to some more interesting statistics. In 1881 Syrian nonCatholics at 205,000 exceeded Syrian Catholics at 200,000. By 1911 the equations had changed – Syrian Catholics at 345,963 had far outstripped the nonCatholics at 248,000. Would really love to know how this came about? The all India Decadal Growth Rate (DGR) of Catholics and Protestants is also an eye opener. For Catholics the DGR from 1871/1881/1891/1901 to 1911 was 22.6%, 17.6%, 16.4% and 14.1% - a gradual tapering off, similar to today. In contrast the Protestant DGR for the same period was 66%, 272.0%, 50.8% and 50.4%. How do we explain the difference in DGR? Again Houpert provides the answer. In the IBC in 1901 the priest to Catholics ratio was 1:841, but the pastor to Protestants ratio was much better at 1:457. Taking into account all missionary personnel the Catholic ratio was 1:197, and for the Protestants it was 1:37. The Protestants obviously invested more in people than in institutions. Houpert says, “The relatively extensive use of native mission agency of all ranks seems to be the strong point of Protestant evangelizing methods both in Asia and in Africa”. I fully endorse this view. Those who have doubts are referred to the book “Lay Catechists – Their Formation in India’, edited by Rev C. M. Paul SDB, and my own review of that book “A Scathing Indictment” published in my book “An Unfinished Symphony. A highly clericalised Catholic Church has used its catechists, its frontline troops, as church-bearers rather than as Christ-bearers (Christophers). Sad indeed. I end this century old flashback in Houpert’s own words, “We do not expect the advent of a Church Triumphant before her time … she is instituted as a Church Militant, for conflict not for rest”. Unfortunately, 100 years later the Catholic Church in India has chosen to eschew conflict (challenges) and preferred to rest on its laurels, before time. It has assumed all the trappings of a Church Triumphant! Did I hear somebody say “Pilgrim Church”? It is as anathema and inimical to us as is Vatican II. If we don’t learn the lessons of history, we are bound to commit the same blunders. Yes, history repeats itself because we don’t look back before hastening forward. * The writer is a former National President of the All India Catholic Union

Be Rene wed oly Renewed wed,, T he H Ho Sp ir it Rest s O n Y ou irit Rests On You Spir Last Sunday (May 12) was truly one of the most celebrated Feast in the history of the Christian faith. It was the feast of the PENTECOST. As we all know, the Holy Spirit came down upon the Apostles and they were filled with courage to preach salvation and proclaim the Word as Jesus had taught them. Today , the celebra-tion of Pentecost is for us to instill in our lives the same Mission to propagate the Faith. By choosing to do so , Christians can somewhat heal the wounds of suffering humanity, and the persecution of our faith – ironically, a reality in several countries where wolves hide in the shadows of their own warped belief. As the Father had commissioned Jesus with a Mission – we are sent by Christ, who will breath on those among us willing to take the challenge to subdue Satan.

pels, we discover many avenues to diverse into and to discover crucial factors which protect the traditional charisma of the Faith. With the help of the Holy Spirit we are able to achieve an understanding. In this Year of Faith the Spirit of God will open an encyclical for all people to know, learn and embrace the Christian values encased in the teachings of Jesus and Holy Mother the Church.

The resignation of one pope and the installation of another has hosted an ongoing process of ‘sharing’ the faith with others. The Catholic world remains intrigued : the new pope desires to establish a ‘poor church’ for the poor. He took the name Francis from the Saint of Assisi. He wears a silver ‘fisherman’s ring’. He stayed in a hotel near the Vatican and each morn“ When the day of Pente- Melvyn Brown ing paid his own bills. He cost had come, they were built a small kitchen in his all together in one place. And sud- hotel-room to make his own tea. He denly from heaven there came a sound broke the rule when a Vatican guard like the rush of a violent wind … Di- stood-at-attention, outside the room , vided tongues, as of fire, appeared by giving him a stool to sit on.He rode among them, and a tongue rested on in a bus along with other Cardinals. He each of them. All of them were filled washed the feet of two women and with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts.2:1-4). created a precedent. Pentecost is a Christian festival in tribute to the Holy Spirit’s descent on the disciples of Christ . Pentecost is also a Jewish festival which is celebrated fifty days after the second day of Passover . The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are many : to enrich the spiritual works of theologians and philosophers – to inspire bishops , priests, and religious in their pastoral duties – to bring insight and holiness among the people of God – to heal and give renewed strength to the sick – to comfort the dying…

A senior child in a Catholic school wanted to know what were the works of the Holy Spirit. To a large degree this did surprise me at first. The next week with permission from the Principal I arranged a class where eleven children attended. I was prepared to talk about the works and the symbols of the Holy Spirit . It took two hours in a workshop-style , replying to each one’s query. But it worked to everyone’s satisfaction. The work of the Holy Spirit is contained in six major slots :

1. Awakens Faith. 2. Grants gifts to all. 3. Helps man grow in spiritual freedom. 4.Reveals God. 5. Reveals the Trinity. 6. Source of all holiness.

The Symbols of the Holy Spirit : Cloud and Light . Fire. Finger of God. Hand of God. The Dove. Water . Anointing. Prayers to the Holy Spirit are a constant-communion for His guidance. The Novena is said for nine successive days in church or at home. The Prayer to the Holy Spirit is said for three consecutive days. Then, there is the All-Night Vigil in praise, worship and prayers. It concludes early morning with Holy Eucharist. Led by the Holy Spirit, Pope Benedict XVI , in OCTOBER 2002 declared a vital statement on the teaching of the

Goan Becomes FFir ir un T irsst Indian N Nun Too opes Ser ee P Servve Thr Three Popes She can speak fluent French and Italian and does translation jobs at the Vatican Archives. Panaji: Sister Lucy Britto from Goa has the distinction of becoming the first Indian nun to have served at the Vatican during the pontificates of three popes. The nun, who can speak fluent French and Italian, believes her linguistic skills helped her work with the Vatican Archives under Blessed John Paul II (1978-2005), Benedict XVI and Francis. “I work in the Vatican Archives, where all documents and letters of the Pope are kept. We save the records and details on the computers. All documents and letters are treated with utmost secrecy and respect for the person who writes to the Pope,” explains Sister Lucy. She said she is placed in the archives because "probably in the archives they need persons with knowledge of many languages, since the letters come from all over the world." Incidentally, Sister Lucy’s journey from Goa, considered the Rome of the East, to Rome has had interesting twists and turns along the way.Born in Veroda-Cuncolim, Sr Lucy along with her parents, two sisters and a brother shifted to Mumbai in the 1950s. At 21, she joined the Sisters of Charity and after two years of training in Mangalore, she was sent to Hyderabad to complete her higher studies. There she graduated in English literature, political science and psychology and simultaneously, completed three years diploma in French. "I started teaching French in St Francis degree and junior college run by us in 1976. After completing my MA in French in Hyderabad, I was a lecturer in the same college. Later in 1984, I was selected and deputed by the Government of India for further studies to France.” For some years she was sent to Cuncolim, where she was principal of the Higher Secondary from 1994 to

2000. "I was also responsible for our community in Mumbai till 2003, before I moved to Rome,” said Sister Lucy. Each of the three popes she worked for "is unique" according to her. "Pope John Paul was a charismatic figure, while Benedict is a learned theologian and Pope Francis is a great pastor," she said. She recalled having worked with Pope John Paul II for only one year. “I participated in his funeral ceremony

and the impact that his funeral created in me will remain forever." She said Pope Benedict XVI is "a great theologian and an excellent teacher and an intellectual force of the church.” “Pope Francis is down to earth and his style is to associate with people. He met the Secretariat staff on April 12 and had thanked each one of us for the service rendered to the church and personally to him,” she said. Source: oheraldo

Insensitive Church According to the teaching of the Catholic Church, there is no divorce between married couples. However, if one or more basic requirements of a valid marriage were missing at the time of the proclamation of the wedding vows, the marriage can be declared null and void by the Tribunal of a Diocese. It has been observed that in todays fast moving world, many girls and boys make tall claims and provide false information regarding their physical, mental and financial aspects and their family background. Some even conceal vital facts of their physical ailments which affect their reproductive system. One girl had even hidden the fact that she had been suffering from Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome and had Tilted Uterus. She rarely had periods since her youth and there were almost no chance of her becoming a mother. Also she was undergoing medical treatment for her ailment prior to her marriage. Aggrieved by the concealment of the facts, the groom filed a petition for annulment of the marriage. However, he was informed by the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Mumbai that there are more than two hundred cases pending with it and he will have to wait till his turn comes. Actually, the Tribunal does not hold regular sittings as the priestly class seems least interested in the problems of the laity. The Church authorities should realise that their insensitivity would drive the youth away with bitterness.

Day’ (an afternoon tabloid) was launched on June 27, 1979, I started writing letters on various topics for the ‘Letters to the editor’ page. Having got my letter published almost every alternative day made me a good letter writer. From then on, I never looked back. I started writing letters on various topics for a lot of Mumbai-based newspapers too, which were all published. Then 22 years ago, when ‘The Secular Citizen’ was first published, I tried my hand at writing letters to the editor. I wrote one letter and it was published without being edited. This gave me an opportunity to write more letters for the paper. Since all my letters were published, I made it a weekly habit of sending letters to the paper. I write on various topics and am not afraid of writing against our corrupt MLAs, politicians, Prime Minister or police departments. Today, 22 years later, I still continue to write for ‘The Secular Citizen’ because the paper carries the latest news. Moreover, it does not contain yellow journalism like other newspapers often do.

Priest Excommunicated For His Radical Opinions Brazil - May 2, 2013: The Catholic Church has excommunicated a Brazilian priest after he defended homosexuality, open marriage and other practices counter to Church teaching in online videos. In a statement released late on Monday, the priest's diocese said Father Roberto Francisco Daniel, known to local parishioners as Padre Beto, had "in the name of 'freedom of expression' betrayed the promise of fealty to the Church." The priest "injured the Church with grave statements counter to the dogma of Catholic faith and morality." The actions amount to "heresy and schism," the statement said, the penalty for which is excommunication, or expulsion from the Church. The 47-year-old cleric, who studied theology in Germany, is popular in the southeastern city of Bauru, where he has been a priest since 2001. He is known for his rock T-shirts, a sil-

ver stud pierced through his right ear and his habit of posing, as on his official Facebook page, with a glass of beer. The excommunication comes just two months before Francis is scheduled to attend World Youth Day, expected to attract as many as 2 million young Catholics to Rio de Janeiro. Last Tuesday, Bishop Caetano Ferrari gave Daniel a letter asking him to take the videos offline and publicly retract his statements. In an interview posted

on the diocese Web site shortly afterward, Ferrari called Daniel "brilliant," but characterized him as a "rebel son" who "crosses the line." On Monday, Daniel said he went to the diocese headquarters planning to renounce his clerical duties rather than retract any of his comments. But before he had a chance, the bishop and canonical expert made him face a committee of Church officials. "It was a trial," Daniel said. "I told them I was not there to be tried, that I had not been indicted." Shortly afterward, the Church issued the statement announcing his excommunication.

After I re-invested in a small flat, gave something to each of the children for their current needs, paid off dues and commissions what I have left won’t sustain me for very long”. Today money is pouring into society but in this sea of wealth you feel both powerful and powerless. The ever vigilant financial wizards know where the money is and where it should go. Education is an excellent investment. So you save up & then spend on education. In the good old days if you were a good student you were encouraged to study with free-ships, scholarships, tuition waivers and what not. Today you are still a good student scoring 91 % in the school final exam. Only you find that where you could have got a cheap and good education the cut off was 93 % — O.M.G. some students nearly touched 100 %. So you stand in the queue for admission to a private institution with a Management Quota and heavy fees. Who owns these institutions? You guessed right — Politicians who are running educational institutions in the service of the public. The buzz word of Modern Society is “MORE”. Everyone feels she is entitled to More. What makes news is not the growing poverty, not the suicides of farmers, who can’t pay their debts, not the starvation deaths but the scandals and scams. These are titillating and make one believe that we are living in affluent times. There is plenty just for the asking. Those of us who still buy newspapers would not like to face reality, they would like to live in their comfort zones believing that we are in the Age of Hyper-Efficiency where things can only get better, don’t worry about Waste — There is plenty to go around.

I was at the doctor’s this morning. The doctor on his mobile, “The operation is easy, safe and affordable — only Rs. 60K”. Do we realize how fragile and unsustainable our way of life is? Pope Francis in his Pentecostal Dialogue said that there are more martyrs today than in the past. Who are these martyrs? I asked myself. How does a daily paid worker attend to his medical needs? A single visit to the doctor eats up half a month’s salary!! Is it any wonder that she demands More from her employers? Nobody is going to tell you how old you are going to be. So you better go back to the Future and think through how you are going to live through the uncertain times ahead. Today we are heading towards an aging population where a working couple will have to support four adults — Both husband and wife will have to work to support non-earning parents from both sides. In this scenario no doubt the youngsters are highly qualified and well paid. But where do the children fit in? This is a wake-up call for Seniors. How To Strengthen Your Loving Relationship

MONTHLY Lucky Draw Lucky Draw will be held on 10th of every month Result of April 2013 Winning subscriber’s name:

Mrs. Mable L. Pinto - Pedamale Lucky Draw Coupon No. 2429 (Winning gift : Rs. 1000 Cash) Everyone’s relationship is unique, and people come together for many different reasons. But there are some things that good relationships have in common. Knowing the basic principles of healthy relationships helps keep them meaningful, fulfilling, and exciting in both happy times and sad:

What makes a healthy love relationship? Staying involved with each other. Some relationships get stuck in peaceful coexistence, but without truly relating to each other and working together. While it may seem stable on the surface, lack of involvement and communication increases distance. When you need to talk about something important, the connection and understanding may no longer be there. Getting through conflict. The key in a strong relationship is not to be fearful of conflict. You need to be safe to express things that bother you without fear of retaliation, and be able to resolve conflict without humiliation, degradation, or insisting on being right. Keeping outside relationships and interests alive. No one person can meet all of our needs, and expecting too much from someone can put a lot of unhealthy pressure on a relationship. Having friends and outside interests not only strengthens your social network, but brings new insights and stimulation to the relationship, too. Communicating. Honest, direct communication is a key part of any relationship. When both people feel comfortable expressing their needs, fears, and desires, trust and bonds are strengthened. Nonverbal cues—body language like eye contact, leaning forward or away, or touching someone’s arm—are critical to communication.

Women Make Better Business Decisions Female corporate directors make decisions on complex issues than men, a new study has claimed. A survey of over 600 board directors showed that women are more likely to consider the rights of others and to take a cooperative approach to decision making. This approach translates into better performances for their companies. It was found that male directors, who made up 75 percent of the survey simple, prefer to make decisions using rules, regulations and traditional ways of doing business or getting along. According to the study, female directors, in contrast, are less constrained by these parameters and are more prepared to rock the boat than their male counter parts. In addition, women corporate directors are significantly more inclined to make decisions by taking the interests of multiple stakeholders into account in order to arrive at a fair and moral decision, the study said.

Teaching Your Kids To Respect

There are many aspects of bringing up a child and one of them is teaching them how to respect others. Just like social etiquette and table manners, this particular habit is important for a child. Let’s see how you can teach your child a few tips on respecting others.

Behave properly in front of child:

The first thing to remember before teaching respect to children is that children grasp what they see and hear. It may not necessarily be directed towards them but even when adults are in conversation with others and they hear as well as how the two people in the conversation behave.

Give the child respect and encouragement:

Respect can be received, only when respect is shown. While teaching children how to respect others, you must give them due respect for their urge to learn. This will lead the child to believe in himself/herself.

Take note of the child’s politeness:

You should always appreciate the child whenever he/she behaves respectfully. It is an important part of teaching respect to children. Unless they understand that for treating others with respect, they will be praised, they will not inculcate it in their behaviour.

A friend of mine told me a story about when he was a kid he was in the hospital and nearly dying. His grandmother came to the hospital and told a family member to go buy her a large onion and a new pair of white cotton socks. She sliced the onion open then put a slice on the bottom of each of his feet and put the white cotton socks on him. In the morning when he awoke they removed the socks. The slices of onion were black and his fever was gone. Many years when the flu killed thousands of people there was this Doctor that visited the many villagers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the villagers and their family had contracted it and many died. The doctor came upon this one villager and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the villager was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy. I heard this story from my bar-

ber. He said that several years ago many of his employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of his customers. The next year he placed several bowls with onions around in his shop. To his surprise, none of his staff got sick. It must work.. (And no, he is not in the onion business.) The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

For flu cure: Cut both ends off an onion put one end on a fork and then place the forked end into an empty jar... placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs... sure enough it happened just like that... the onion was a mess and I began to feel better. Onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial and antiseptic properties. One more thing, never store cut onions and consume the next day. —Agnelo Rodrigues, Marine Lines
