Kottayam: The St Mary s Church in Athirampuzha, Kerala, is making a list of those who have gained by the intercession of Fr. Benedict On?amkul?am, the controversial priest acquitted by a court in a murder case. The move is seen as paving the way for conferring an exalted status on the priest. The many ways in which devotees, many of whom are from Malabar, have benefited after praying at the tomb of Fr. Benedict have been periodically published in the bulletin of the parish church," admitted Fr. Joshy Muppathinchira, assistant vicar of St Mary s Church. But some in the church say it has not taken any decision up till now to propose his name for higher recognition in the Church although there is a demand for it in some sections. Among stories of miracles circulating is that of class X student, who apparently recovered after being on the verge of death all because his grandfather prayed at the tomb of the priest. Fr. Benedict, a priest with the Changanacherry archdiocese, died on January 11, 2001. According to church sources at least two proven miracles of people being freed of diseases not curable by medical science need to be attributed to the dead for canonization. A special team from Rome has to also explore the sanctity of the miracles through an inquiry and confirm them, they explain. Fr. Benedict Onamkulam was accused of murdering a widow who was found dead on June 16, 1966. The police claimed the priest had murdered the woman after a liaison and fathering a son. The priest was sentenced to death by Justice Kunjiraman Vaidhyan of the Kollam sessions court but was acquitted by the division bench of high court, which gave him the benefit of the doubt. But the case created a sensation all over the state. Crucially, a doctor s family later confessed that the woman had died of complications during abortion and that she had been in a relationship with a planter.

During the days of novena, as a preparation for the feast, the Brothers reflected on the various aspects of Devotions. On this occasion 6 OCDS candidates were inducted into novitiate and 5 OCDS renewed their profession and 4 of them made their final promise. They were accompanied in their formation by Fr. Ivan D souza. Scapulars, the sign of the motherly protection of Mary were distributed to the faithful for all the masses. In the evening Carmel Family get-together was held at Anubhav. It was a nice opportunity where secular members shared their joys and happiness. The newly professed members were felicitated and the brothers conducted few creative games. Latin Church Hits Out At Kerala Government Kottayam: The Catholic Church in Kerala is a communion of three individual Churches; Latin, Syro- Malabar, Syro Malankara. The Latin Church has eleven ecclesiastical units out of 29 dioceses in Kerala. The Latin Catholic Church in Kerala has come out strongly against the state government, saying that it was always kept in the queue even if they asked for what they rightly deserve. The general assembly of the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council on the last day of its three-day general council held in Kottayam, issued a political resolution stating that it was the mighty that was ruling the state. In the appointment of members to board and corporations of the government, formation of minority commission etc, the Latin Church was overlooked by the government, the resolution stated. At the same time, some other communities are reaping profits by influencing the government. The present government in the state is not at all bothered about the day-to-day issues of the common man, it added. The resolutions said that the government is more interested in group politics and issues related to it. No proper care has been given to those who are suffering due to natural calamities at present and the government is not in any way bothered about the growing inflation. Real issues are not discussed in the state assembly; both the Opposition and ruling parties are equally responsible for this, the resolution said.

Hon ble Sir, Sub: Proposed Anti-Conversion Legislation in Maharashtra From various newspaper reports and reliable sources we have come to know that there is a proposal pending before your State Govt for introducing a Bill to enact an Anti-Conversion Law; which includes a provision to seek prior permission from the Govt before changing one s religion. May I draw your kind attention to the following: 1. In 2008, just before the Assembly elections in Himanchal Pradesh, the then Congress Govt enacted a similar legislation in a desperate attempt to woo voters in a State that is almost entirely Hindu. The move backfired, and the Congress lost the election. Subsequently, certain provisions of the Act were also struck down by the judiciary, for being ultra vires of one s constitutional rights. 2. The first State to enact an Anti-Conversion law in India, sometime in the 1950s, was Madhya Pradesh, then again ruled by the Congress. This was in response to the infamous and highly prejudiced Niyogi Commission Report. The target was Christian missionaries. But where does the Congress stand today in Madhya Pradesh? Besides, your Govt would also do well to enquire from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, how many persons have been convicted for forcible conversion from the time the law was enacted about 60 years ago? 3. Is the present proposed legislation just another poll stunt to woo Hindu votes? It won t work, and will only serve to further alienate the Minorities from your party, which faces general elections very shortly. 4. Maharashtra is the cradle of Ambedkarism and lakhs of Dalits have converted to Buddhism. Has your Govt got the guts to stop them from converting? Will your Govt dare to prevent somebody from converting to Islam or Sikhism, or even becoming a Hindu, for that matter? 5. Is this just one more election stunt by attacking a soft target like the Christian community, which believes in serving the nation, and not resorting to violent means of protest? Shame on the Maharashtra Govt led by you, if it proceeds with such legislation. 6. It is also appropriate to inform you that the official teaching of the Catholic Church expressly forbids any form of forced conversion. We don t need your Govt to tell us what to do. PRAYER In view of the above you are humbly requested to withdraw any such proposal immediately, and to issue a public statement to that effect. Since you are known to be a good and honest person we trust that better sense will prevail on your Govt. Franciscus First Encyclical (Portents for the Future)
From the time of his election about 4 months ago, I have been an unabashed fan of Pope Francis. He has just published his first encyclical Lumen Fidei (The Light of Faith) on 29th June, the feast of Sts Peter & Paul. Through the good offices of a friend I was privileged to get a soft copy within a week of its release. Reading a soft copy on a computer screen is far more difficult than reading a printed text; especially for one who intends to study the text and make notes.

cycle of rebirth. As far as we know Franciscus has not been exposed to Hindu philosophy. So who is he targeting? The answer seems to elude us for now. At another level Franciscus does try to portray divine truths in a very human way. Talking of faith he says that in many areas in our times we trust others who know more than we do (18), like architects, pharmacists and lawyers. Jesus spoke in parables, and then gave the explanation. Likewise Franciscus explains that We also need someone trustworthy and knowledgeable where God is concerned. Jesus, the Son of God, is the one who makes God known to us (18). This is like our guru-shishya relationship. The Pope then talks of the evangelical aspect of faith. I really like that. He says that faith is not a private matter, a completely individualistic notion or a personal opinion: it comes from hearing, and it is meant to find expression in words and to be proclaimed (22). This is a timely reminder that proclamation is integral to our faith. Like love, it must be shared, lest it grow stale and redundant. He then tells us that faith is not an achievement or accomplishment, but an ongoing process. He advocates adding knowledge to our faith (an enlightened faith, not a blind one). He says, Faith without truth does not save, it does not provide a sure footing (24). From objective truth he switches to subjective experience, saying that Believing can be compared to the experience of falling in love; it is something subjective (27). Can anybody give a reason for falling in love? Franciscus comes across as very human here. He strikes a fine balance by stating If love needs truth, truth also needs love. Love and truth are inseparable without

love truth becomes cold, impersonal and oppressive (Ibid). Strong words. Would that our Sunday preachers and catechism teachers hear what Franciscus has to say! He now balances his strong words against idolatry with very accommodating ones about non-believers . Of them he says, To the extent that they are sincerely open to love and set out with whatever light they can find, they are already, even without knowing it, on the path leading to faith (35). Here again the encyclical is wholly compatible with Vat II ecclesiology, as expressed in Lumen Gentium. St Francis of Assisi, in the 13th century, is better remembered for his asceticism. It is only recently that Assisi was recognized as the fountainhead of inter-religious dialogue. While the popes and the rest of Christendom were leading crusades to liberate the Holy Land from the Muslims, Francis had entered into dialogue with the Saracens (Mus-
lims). Franciscus reflects this dialoging spirit with reconciliation and conflict resolution. He says, Unity is superior to conflict; rather than avoiding conflict we need to confront it in an effort to resolve and move beyond it (55). Can we then expect this pope to not shy away from conflict situations, be they moral or social? Will he bite the bullet? This encyclical points in that direction. The pope also does not see faith as a mere set of beliefs. He sees faith expressed in love and concern for others. It invites one to involvement. He says that it does not make us forget the sufferings of the world so it was with St Francis of Assisi and the leper, or with Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her poor To those who suffer, God does not provide arguments which explain everything; rather, his response is that of an accompanying presence, a history of goodness which touches every suffering and opens up a ray of light (57). So do we expect to see an action oriented leader, rather than one
engaged in theological hair-splitting? Towards the end of his encyclical Franciscus touches on another Franciscan virtue joy. He refers to the annunciation and resultant incarnation as not just an act of faith (magnificat), but also one of joy (58). Catholics would do well to rush back to their libraries and knock the dust of their books on St Francis of Assisi, whether written by G.K. Chesterton or anybody else; for Franciscus papacy is going to have a distinctive Franciscan flavour. When Franciscus, a Jesuit, with the gift of Ignatian discernment, is welded to the primary gospel values of Franciscan living, it makes for a combination more powerful than the total of its individual parts. As one who has experienced both, this writer continues to be very excited about Pope Franciscus. He will be for Catholics, and for the entire world a Lumen Fidei , for he has a firm grip on the sensus fidei , the pulse of the people.

Destruction Of Religious Places
The recent bomb blasts that rocked the Buddhist site at Bodh Gaya in Bihar through a series of 9 blasts, is not only atrocious and condemnable , but also defies explanation as to why holy places have now become the target of man s ire and vengeance. It is not only the Buddhist sites, but also churches, mosques and temples the world over that have come under such senseless acts, because of sectarian violence, religious fundamentalism and terrorist attacks. It is sad that man who, centuries ago preferred to live in the vicinity of consecrated places so as to be in touch with his creator, has now chosen to destroy the very places he built to house the divine. In India we have hundreds of such religious shrines and pilgrimage centres in every state, some which have attained heritage status. Past experience has also shown that it doesn t require more than a single misguided and brainwashed suicide bomber to blow himself up along with thousands, at religious sites. It is therefore debatable whether we should spend crores of rupees on hiring the services of security personnel and hitech security gadgets to protect our places of worship without guarantee of they being foolproof. Why Force The Cable Digitisation That Nobody Wants?
I don t think I ve ever been bulldozed into doing anything in my life. Except this one time when I came back home after a couple of months in college to be told that our regular satellite provider had to be swapped for the one now prescribed by the government. What compulsion is this, I asked my parents. Nobody has a choice here, they said. A half-hearted technology transfer cannot do a country good. In sharp contrast to the passionate zeal displayed in pushing through cable digitisation, is the situation regarding the digital switch over to terrestrial TV. Both in the US and in several European countries digital terrestrial now has the majority subscriber base. Two strong reasons for that: The most powerful broadcasting system today available is digital terrestrial. It has a single point of failure, not multiple, as in the case of cable and satellite. And it frees up spectrum for telephony. The conversion obviously costs money, we needed to replace a network of analogue transmitters (1450 in India) with digital ones (630 needed). And here s how we decided to make a mess of the transition. First we took a policy decision to retain terrestrial as a monopoly for DD and AIR. Then we
took the decision to convert but not to provide the money for the conversion. So that in a situation where a total of 630 transmitters were needed, we sanctioned the money for 60 in the 11th plan, and another 60 in the 12th plan. At the rate we re going, we ll be operating in another technological era altogether by the time we provide enough for all 630. In trying to ape whom we consider the successful and glorious, we ve forgotten our own roots. For years, we ve fought against the dominant paradigm of development. Against the fact that we need not look towards the West for inspiration. For the simple reason that their histories, needs and circumstances are not the same as ours. We can, therefore, not adopt the same solutions as them. It s just not going to work. We, as a television viewing nation, cannot afford such technology. Not as of now. That is as blunt as it can get. And there is no point in depriving masses of the right to watch television itself just because we can t seem to get some skewed policies out of our heads and ways. That is just unfair. Journalist Anto Akkara Wins International Award

Girl s Road Accident Death Stirs Residents Into Action
Residents of Andheri Kurla Road, along with citizen movement group Agni and Holy Family Church, will assist traffic cops in managing traffic at the busy Holy Family Chowk Death of a 28-year-old girl in February, an accident every now and then, and several incidents of people narrowly escaping the oncoming traffic in the last couple of months. It seems the residents of Andheri Kurla Road finally have had enough, and are now leaving no stone unturned to make the Holy Family Church junction safe for pedestrians. Locals, with the support of the citizen movement group Agni and Holy Family Church, have decided to take steps to prevent fatal mishaps at the killer junction. they fear being hit by a speeding vehicle while coming to church. At present, Metro rail work is going on at the stretch and it would be long before signals and zebra crossings are properly installed and other changes are made. The busy junction leads the traffic coming from Western Express Highway. Keeping this in mind, the group has decided to concentrate on traffic rules enforcement for now. We know that the traffic department cannot deploy 20 cops at just one junction. That is why, we are inviting volunteers who can devote half-an-hour a day to help traffic cops manage the traffic and facilitate pedestrian movement. We already have 40 volunteers, who will work from 9-11 am and 6-8.30 pm, Monday to Saturday, said James. Evelyn Miranda, who was hit by a speeding vehicle at the same spot a couple of years ago, has also registered as a volunteer. Pope Francis Inspires Colombian Priest To Sell His Mercedes
Colombia: It may be back to a bicycle for a Colombian priest who's heeding Pope Francis' call for austerity. The Rev. Hernando Fayid said he's going to sell his white Mercedes Benz E200 convertible with a black top following the pope's recent statement that it wounds his heart to see a priest in a luxurious car. Fayid told RCN television Tuesday evening that he got the car as a gift from his four brothers last year, but will still give it up and it won't bother him. He said he's ridden a burro, a horse, a bicycle and a bus, to say nothing of walking on foot around his town of Santa Marta. In his words, "I have no problem with that." The 47-year-old priest said he hopes to get about $63,000 for the car. Fayid's announcement was applauded in Colombia, which is predominantly Catholic. Priests "should provide an example of humility," said 24-year-old accounting assistant Leydi Vega, adding that "no one is asking them to live in extreme poverty ... or to die from hunger." The president of Colombia's Bishops Conference, Cardinal Ruben Salazar, said that the Catholic church in Latin America has always embraced austerity. He said the estimated 10,000 Colombian priests in the country each receive the equivalent of about $620 a month. "We priests undoubtedly have to be very conscious that we have to live with our people," said the prelate, "in the conditions in which our people live."

John Paul informs us in his epistle that Sunday Mass is the celebration in bringing together the People of God, groups, movements and associations . In the next part of his apostolic missive we are told about the Eucharist, and the Mission plan . The meeting with Jesus on the road to Emmaus and after knowing who He was, the apostles set out immediately (Lk.24:33). In this passage of the Letter was planted the mission of evangelization and to testimony. At the end of each Mass, the Holy Father expressed the fact that, a charge is given to Christians, inviting them to work for the spread of the Gospel and the imbuing of society with Christian values. Furthermore, we are instructed with the information that the word Eucharist means thanksgiving: to Jesus for his sacrifice, for his yes to the will of God, and a special thank you and amen for all humankind. This is a great truth which the Church reminds men and women. Although the year of the Eucharist ended seven years ago, it is a thanksgiving celebration for all eternity: The Eucharist is a project of solidarity for all of humanity The Apostolic letter of Pope John Paul II on the Eucharist will shine as a beacon to guide Holy Mother the Church in her evangelization of the word of God.

T he Hush P uppy Syndrome RAMBO NAMO has done it again, and succeeded in grabbing the headlines. At a rally at Ferguson College, Pune, on 14th July, he accused the Congress of hiding behind a burqa. I have no problem with Narendra Modi attacking the Congress party, its policies or performance. However, he stoops too low to attack persons. His latest diatribe is to call arthashastri (economist) Manmohan an anarthashastri (meaningless person). Why is nationalist Namo using a partisan metaphor like burqa? Is he not degrading both women and Muslims? Ironically, the podium from which this invective was hurled had the name of Ramzani Sound! The message should not be lost on us; that we are a composite culture with a high degree of interdependence between religious communities. So why is nationalist Namo using such obnoxious and insensitive idiom? Is he a rampaging bull in a china shop? Or is he a shrewd and calculating person, who knows that the media is desperate for sound bites, and therefore obliges them with colourful metaphor? Having won several elections, and having a suave managerial style, is he also unfolding a media strategy, based on sound managerial technique, sociological and psychological analysis? Has Modi s tongue gone out of control, or is it all under the control of his spin-doctors? Let us analyse another recent Namo utterance. Referring to the Gujarat riots of 2002, where over 1000 Muslims were butchered, he used the analogy of a person sitting in the back seat when a puppy gets crushed under its wheels. There was a hue and cry in the political establishment, so Namo had to retract by saying that in India we worshipped all forms of life. Actually this was the second time that Namo put his foot in his mouth, after his Rambo evacua-

As Christian I am proud to be called an Indian catholic, not Roman catholic since there is nothing Roman in my belief and action. As Indian my Faith is foreign but why should my customs and traditions be foreign. My Jesus who is a good shepherd, is for me "Govinda" or "Krishna" since they are names similar to Shepherd. Will it be wrong if I call my Jesus "Hari" since Hari means redeemer. Let's not be threatened by Inculturation and make it feel dangerous. It is high time that the church

When initially introduced in Mumbai seminary in the late seventies these instruments where considered as Hindu Instruments and even thrown and damaged. Indian Bhajan are so soothing to the heart if sung well yet, one would always like to go back to Gregorian thinking it is ' the' music of the church. Inculturation is not wearing a dhoti or using bulk cart, it is more than that. Just because 'Arthi" is done by the Hindus to their God that doesn't stop me in doing ARTHI at the time of Dolxology. Squatting for prayer is the right form for prayer ,removing sandals as one enters the holy place speaks volume but all these has become difficult with the western life style, No Prudent Inculturation is "dangerous". Meaningful Life And Poisoned Honey What it takes to live life? Earning money, finding shelter, fulfilling lust? Yes. This is life for human beings. To some extent, nothings is wrong in it. But this could not make any difference in human growth. I mean growth of human consciousness. Human mind is resistible to growth of consciousness and obliged to find new pleasures. This is by default quality and nature of human product. Nevertheless, humans have other best qualities by default and that is consciousness and intellect. Nature expects from humans to use those tools and follow the path that leads to growth of consciousness and secrets of life. And that requires courage. Finding pleasures, trying hard for happiness and devoting to enjoyment are the things that do not require any determination. There is trap that takes advantage of this human nature. These are such systems based on lust and pleasures, and make others believe that 'this is the path of truth'. But because only handful people know the true path of growth and truth, other fall in trap. Even if they have examples in front of their naked eyes, they do not learn any lesson, their ego makes them choosing the poisoned honey. It tastes good, but results bad.

Court Modifies Order On St. MaryÂ’s School
Pune: The Bombay high court has modified its earlier order which stated that the St Mary's School in Pune Camp "shall reserve" 25 per cent seats for children belonging to weaker sections and disadvantaged groups of society as provided under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009. The high court division bench of justices V M Kanade and K R Shriram stated in its modified order on July
11 that the word "reserve" is substituted by the words "keep vacant". The modification came after the the petitioner made an application submitting that it did not mention that the said seats should be kept vacant until further orders. The bench has since ruled, "In our view, it is obvious that there is a typographical mistake in the said order and it is clarified that the petitioner shall keep 25 per cent seats vacant. In the order, the word 'reserve' therefore is substituted by the word 'keep vacant'. The order is accordingly modified." The matter is now expected to be heard on August 8, considering that the court has extended the returnable date for the notices issued to the respondents, including the Pune zilla parishad (ZP) education officer, by four weeks. Representatives of non-aided minority schools here have expressed their satisfaction over the modified order as the high court - in another petition filed by the Bishop's education society regarding its schools at Pune Camp, Kalyaninagar and Undri - is dealing with the question as to what constitutes "aid".
