elesing postal stamp in the hounour of a person is a rare honour that too when they are alive. This honour came from BJP Government. On 1st May, 2018 the postal department of Shimla felicitated Sr Jacintha Noronha by issuing a ‘my stamp’ in her honour in recognition her service to the education. A rare thing wher a BJP government of Himachal Predesh honouring catholic religious Sister. Sister Jacintha Noronha came to Shimla in the year 1994 and since then she has been serving the people of Shimla tirelessly; opening up her heart and service to them. Having headed Sacred Heart Tara Hall for fifteen long years, her far sightness bore fruit as she opened the portals of Sacred Heart Dhalli, giving the people of Sanjauli, Dhalli and the neighbouring colonies a Coed school idyll for their wards providing quality education. and a first cover of Sacred Heart Convent Dhalli to commemorate the completion of 10 years of this institution. It was a small token of appreciation by the members of the school management committee to express their appreciation and gratitude to her! The Founder Principal; even though physically absent will live on the hearts of all those whose life she has touched. The citizens of Shimla are forever indebted to her for her wonderful gift to them! SISTER JACINTHA NORONHA is the second among the six children of Late Denis and Chritine Noronha of Shankarpura. China has launched a five year plan for the “development” of the Catholic Church, aimed at altering religious principles and practices to coincide with Chinese communist ideals. This plan was approved by the Patriotic Association of Chinese Catholics and the Council of Chinese Bishops, neither of whom is recognised by the Holy See. The goal of this plan is to eliminate “foreign influence” and to ensure governmental control of all religious activities, including a submission of religious leaders to the Communist Party. The groups have not released any specific details, but the five year plan will include “understanding the history of the church” in China, driving theological research, and emphasising evangelism. Architecture, arts and liturgy will also change in order to fit better with Chinese ideals. The idea that religions should conform to Chinese principles has prevailed for many years but President Xi Jinping emphasized the idea in a 2015 address to the United Front, the overseeing body of all non-communist entities in China. During the address, Xi called for the eradication of outside influences on religion. China and the Vatican are currently undergoing negotiations and are set to meet again next week. A May 18 article by the South China Morning Post quotes the Pope as saying he will not “compromise Catholic principles” by giving China the power to appoint their own bishops. However, China does not want to allow the Pope to appoint religious leaders, seeing it as an influence of Western ideals in their country. (mattersindia/catholicherald)

Do We Care for Our Environment? By *Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ One of the most common sights in urban India is a herd of cows around a garbage bin, apparently having a ‘royal feast’ of leftovers and other rotten thrash dumped into them, which are usually tied into plastic bags. Sadly these bovines, cannot but help swallow the complete ‘parcel’ – plastic and all. This indeed is the irony and tragedy of India today! Whilst a fringe group of extremists, have no qualms of conscience in murdering innocent people for apparently ‘eating beef’; these very same bigots will not bat an eyelid when the cows ingest plastic bag litter and die a slow but painful death. Come 5 June and India will play host to World Environment Day 2018. Strangely enough, the theme chosen by India this year for the global is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. One can certainly not argue with the theme. Plastic does contribute significantly to the environmental crisis. Given the fact that the Government and even the average Indian citizen care two hoots if the cows in India actually are bloated and even die due to plastic – this is certainly a major cause of concern. Sadly for India it is also a classic case of “ missing the forest for the trees”; India squandering a golden opportunity of demonstrating the sagacity and the political will to address the key endemic issues which are the cause of the environmental crisis that plague India and several other countries today! Last January, the Environmental Performance Index 2018 report (prepared by Yale University and Columbia University in collaboration with the World Economic Forum) was released during the WEF in Davos Switzerland. The report highlighted India’s performance, which has plunged to an all-time low. It is now ranked 177 out of 180 countries whose performance was evaluated. In two years, India had dropped 36 ranks(from 141 in 2016) to reach the bottom five in 2018. It is indeed a sad commentary on the Government of the day. The World Health Organization (WHO) released in early May 2018 its updated database on the pollution levels of more than 4,300 cities across the world. India suffers the ignominy of being home to fourteen out of twenty of the most polluted cities in the world. The National Capital New Delhi and Varanasi (represented in Parliament by the Prime Minister) figure high –up in this polluted cities index.

(Contd.. from p. 3) Several areas across Northern India are today gripped with a severe water crisis. Shimla, the queen of hill stations and the capital of Himachal Pradesh has practically no drinking water. Women have to trudge for miles in eastern Uttar Pradesh for a pot of drinking water. Several parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh have been reeling under a terrible heat wave and under an unprecedented water crisis. Parts of South India, like Mangalore city, were recently totally inundated because of heavy rains. The poor and marginalized suffer the most because of the vagaries of the climate. India today is indeed riddled with a whole range of environmental problems; these include climate change, the wanton destruction of the forests, lack of safe drinking water, loss of biodiversity, the pillaging of natural resources; unbridled and wasteful consumerism . Dams like the Narmada Dam in Gujarat, damage the fragile ecosystem irreversibly. The builders lobby is a powerful one in India; over the years, they have managed to landfill the natural water-bodies in towns and cities across the country. Then there is the general apathy, callousness and even insensitivity to the environment by both officials and the ordinary citizen. Perhaps the key factor for the environmental degradation of the country today is the blatant nexus, which the ruling political dispensation has with some of the most corrupt, and insensitive industrial houses in the world today. The recent case of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper in Thootukudi when thirteen protestors were gunned down on 22 May received national and international attention. However, not sufficient attention is being paid to Vedanta’s total disregard for the environment and for human rights, flouting with impunity the most basic of environmental norms. Writing in ‘The Wire’(2 June) , Pamela Philipose says, “An aspect of the Sterlite story that tended to be forgotten was the potential hazards the plant poses to the Gulf of Mannar, that

4

is home to 4,000 marine species and is known as one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in Asia. Environmental activist and journalist, Nityanand Jayaraman, had pointed out that the very installation of the plant in a populated area and within 14 km from the Gulf of Mannar, constituted a grave violation of environmental norms and the stipulation of a 25 km distance on which permission was granted in the first place. Given this, the inclusion of a new video series on the Gulf of Mannar, produced by the Care Earth Trust and the Society for Conservation Biology, as part of The Wire’s general coverage of Thoothukodi, was clever thinking”. Norges Bank (NB) is responsible for managing Norway's Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG). GPFG is described in the following simple terms on NB's website: “ The Government Pension Fund Global is saving for future generations in Norway. One day the oil will run out, but the return on the fund will continue to benefit the Norwegian population. ” It has blacklisted seventeen Indian Companies including Sterlite/Vedanta, Coal India, POSCO, the Gujarat Minerals Development Corporation (GMDC), some Reliance owned companies from investment of its pension funds, because of environmental violations. There has been a wave of protest all over against the Adani plan to take over the Carmichael Coal Mine in Australia, which would have severe repercussions on the Great Barrier Reef. Whilst the actual status of this ‘take over’ is in a kind of a freeze, everybody is aware that there are plenty of back-door deals taking place. The same is apparently happening with regard to the ‘closure’ of the Sterlite Company and of the unbelievable clout that this company has with every powerful decision- making body! Vedanta,Adanis, Ambanis and their ilk thrive on the patronage of the ruling political dispensation. They literally have the license to destroy the environment, to ensure their windfallprofits, which also means a bountiful share to their political bosses. There is enough of documented evidence THE SECULAR CITIZEN

on this and also of each of how these companies have succeeded in signing lucrative international deals, each time they accompany the Prime Minister on his foreign jaunts. There is certainly a case, which can be made to‘ Beat Plastic Pollution’; we are informed, “Nearly one third of the plastic packaging we use escapes collection systems, which means that it ends up clogging our city streets and polluting our natural environment. Every year, up to 13 million tons of plastic leak into our oceans, where it smothers coral reefs and threatens vulnerable marine wildlife. The plastic that ends up in the oceans can circle the Earth four times in a single year, and it can persist for up to 1,000 years before it fully disintegrates”. However, for India the real environmental challenges are elsewhere: how to stop those with power and money from destroying the environment: be it the crony capitalists, the big corporations, the other vested interests – or the Government itself. Everybody is aware that plastic surgery is also used essentially for cosmeticization or beautification; focusing on ‘beating plastic pollution’ is perhaps a benign attempt to gloss over the severe environmental crisis, which grips and ravages India today. Of course just as in other years when there is a beeline to “plant trees” this year there will be ‘plenty of action’ to collect plastic, to clean the public spaces(great photoop for our politicians!)- But then what happens next? Where does one dispose the plastic collected? In his path-breaking Encyclical (24 May 2015) on the environment, ‘LaudatoSi’ (On Care for our Common Home), Pope Francis raises a very pertinent question, “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up? ”(#160) It is a question, which deserves an answer, through substantial, committed and concerted action now! *(Fr. The One-Paisa Joke Believe it or not, on Wednesday May 30 petrol price was reduced by one whole paise! Is this a joke or just another installment in the 'Jhumla Series' which kicked off with the 'Rs 15 lakh in every bank account' promise? The Aadhaar card was introduced to ensure transparency. Why can't we have some transparency in determining the price of fuel? In the last week the price of Brent crude dropped by one dollar every day for 5 consecutive days, yet the price of petrol kept rising in our country. During the Karnataka elections, prices remained constant for several days----apparently to fuel the electorate! A transparent method of calculating petrol price would be for the govt to first decide the 'total' amount it wants in taxes per litre of fuel. This amount should be added to the dealer's price. The dealer's price will fluctuate depending on the international crude price, but the taxes must remain constant. Crude may be at $ 30 or $100 a barrel. The govt must only add the total fixed amount of taxes to the dealer price which is about Rs 33 per litre, which is inclusive of freight, transport and dealer's margin. The govt cannot increase taxes as the dealer price increases. —Robert Castellino Orlem.

porting environment. A thin cover of water and air known as the biosphere encasing earth sustains life. The absence of biosphere would make the earth a lifeless planet like many others in the universe. We have made the ecology suffer by the thoughtlessness of our actions. We have polluted the encasing of the earth, namely the water and the air, far beyond its capacity to cleanse itself. Urgent measures are needed to check further degradation of the environment or a day will soon come when the environment around us would collapse to make survival a near impossibility. Nature has already started warning us in the form of unexpected disasters and diseases. It will take a foolish person to ignore these warnings. The motto of the day is to improve our ecology or perish in the absence of it.. —Jubel D’Cruz, Mumbai

Calm down Arnab calm down I was surprised at the manner you Arnab Goswami conversed with His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias on Repubic TV channel recently. Being a well known and qualified TV personality. I expected you to speak with His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias with greater respect and finesse. Instead it shocked me to hear the manner in which you spoke to this great Catholic religious leader of our country who is well renowned and revered all over the world. For your information the Archbishop of Delhi His Lordship Anil Couto personal letter was not against any individual it was a call for prayer to our Lord and God Jesus Christ to bless THE SECULAR CITIZEN

Privatise Nationalised banks It has become a regular practice for unions of Nationalised banks to call for a nationwide strike at the drop of a hat every year to press for their unending demands , despite enjoying all the benefits, comforts and job security provided by their respective banks. The inconvenience and losses caused to the people and the Nation because of these strikes is most unfortunate and condemnable. The question therefore is whether the claims and demands of the bank unions are justifiable, given the dismal performance of public sector banks, and the fact that all the 21 public sector banks are deep in the red, with losses running into thousands of crores of rupees, and the mounting Non Performing Assets (NPAs), due to bad loans. The spate of bank scams in the country testifies to the rot that has set in and eaten into the public sector banking system .People as a result have lost faith in nationalised banks and are slowly switching over to private banks and co-operative society banks, where interest rates are higher and customer- service better. The time has come to privatise public sector banks and restore the lost confidence in our banking system, which is much needed to improve the overall economy of the country.. — A.

Constitution in danger, human rights trampled: Goa Archbishop Calling for the participation of Catholics and Church communities in politics and social movements, Ferrao said such involvement was "vital" to the creation of a just community. "Our parishes and small Christian communities ought to be immersed in this mission of the Church. They should be open to the problems of the world... this social concern should not only remain within the confines of the parish community but should reach out to the whole state and country at large," Ferrao said in the letter.

Panaji: The Indian Constitution is in danger, Goa's Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao has said, adding that a "new trend" of mono-culturalism, which demands uniformity in what and how one eats, dresses, lives and even worships, is putting human rights at risk. In the latest annual pastoral letter to Catholics in Goa, Ferrao also exhorted agencies of the Church in Goa to actively participate in social movements and urged lay Catholics to play an active part in politics. "At the time of elections, the candidates confuse the minds of many people by making false promises. And the people, on their part, often sell their precious vote for selfish, petty gain. "Today, our Constitution is in danger, (it is a) reason why most of the people live in insecurity," Ferrao said in his pastoral letter for 2018-19 which was formally released on Sunday but circulated only on Monday. "In this context, particularly as the general elections are fast approaching, we must strive to know our Constitution better and work harder to protect it."

11-17 June 2018

In the letter, which comes two weeks after Delhi Archbishop Anil Couto warned about an emerging threat to India's "democratic and secular fabric", Ferrao also alleged that human rights were being trampled in the name of development and mono-culturalism. "In recent times, we see a new trend emerging in our country, which demands uniformity in what and how we ear, dress, live and even worship: a kind of mono-culturalism. Human rights are under attack and democracy appears to be in peril. "The various minorities fear for their safety. In short, respect for law is frankly on the decline in this country," said Ferrao, who is the spiritual and religious leader of Catholics in Goa who account for 26 per cent of the state's population of 1.5 million. "People are being uprooted from their land and homes in the name of development. Pope Francis says that 'the first victim of development is the poor person'. It is easier to trample upon the rights of the poor, because those who will raise their voice for them are very few." THE SECULAR CITIZEN

"It is advisable that the lay faithful play an active role in the political field; they should, however, follow the dictates of their conscience while doing so and shun 'sycophantic' politics. They should thus strengthen democracy and, on the other hand, help to improve the functioning of the state administration." (Ucanews / IANS)

WHETHER ECONOMIC MOBILITY CAN BE ACHIEVED IN OUR COUNTRY BY BREAKING THE PARENT TRAP? by Eric D'Sa The ladder of economic mobility has several broken rungs in developing countries such as India. This makes it very difficult for even the very bright kids from poor families to climb the economic ladder and escape stark poverty. Economic liberals around the world and locally, are usually more concerned about equality of opportunity than equality of outcomes. Inequality to an extent is more acceptable in countries where mobility across generations is high, so that where you were born and to whom you were born to, does not completely determine your path in life. A mobile society is far better than one raised for the benefit of a plutocracy. No society where the citizens are hostages to the incomes or educational qualifications of their parents, can be deemed to be fair. Unfortunately in India, besides the poverty line, even the caste system holds back millions. After India attained independence, due to our constitution and the economic, political policies that have been followed, the economic mobility has gradually increased. This is partly due to type of democracy we have followed, where the poor are able with their voting power to de-

mand policies that will bring about the required changes. However it is worth taking on record, that India continues to have the worst record on the income mobility among the six largest developing countries. This is because parental education has a big influence on the income of an Indian and this has caused low occupational mobility. For instance only 3% of the sons of farmers end up with whit- collar jobs. Most remain trapped in farms. On the other hand 38% of the sons of white collar workers, eventually get similar

YOU THE CITIZENS DECIDE: jobs. One well known solution to rise steadily on this ladder of economic mobility, is better access to quality education. There is a tight correlation between education mobility and income mo-

bility, which is quite understandable. This is perhaps even more so in case of girls, given the facts that in a county like India, where the property rights are not easily available to them they have to depend more on education to ensure reasonable economic independence. This is one more reason, that the need for educating the girl child has become a very popular demand by the feminists. The present trend of the strong urge to get an education - though what is offered by our governments is usually indifferent in quality - is welcome news for all who are concerned about economic mobility in India. There is an urgent need to invest in upgrading of government and municipal schools, especially those in our villages. Without a good school education as foundation, any chance of obtaining higher education becomes a dream impossible to achieve. The job and labour market is also skewed against the poor students, due to their inflexibility as well as discrimination embedded in them. There is an urgent need to change labour laws and recruitment practices that discriminate against the children from poor families that do not have the large net work of rich extended families and well connected friends. There is dominance of social and caste net works in the labour market in our country, which also discriminate against the poor children. This will disappear only when labour markets begin to function efficiently and impartially. The other factor that hinder this ability of getting better education, is the inability of the poor but bright students to obtain the required funds as educational loans from the banks and other financial institutions at reasonable interest rates, especially for students whose parents do not have tangible (Contd.. on p. 9)

11-17 June 2018

(Contd.. from p. 8) assets that can be hypothecated to the banks. The situation is worsening these days, with the higher college education becoming more and more expensive. As a matter of fact it has become almost impossible for the poor student to enter any of the private colleges that have mushroomed around the country, even if they are very bright and have done well in school. Government do have policies for schedule banks to provide educational loans to bright poor students for college education without need of a security to a upper limit of Rs. 4.5 lakhs, but the banks reading under the NPA problems are most reluctant to provide such loans. In his now very famous speech delivered at midnight on 15 the August 1947, our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, spoke of the need to end poverty, ignorance, disease and inequality of opportunity. The four are interlinked more closely than most people believe. Unfortunately he did not pay sufficient attention to provide good school education to the poor masses in our country on a war footing, for a start to minimise ignorance, which in turn would have provided the poor with the equality of opportunities. Regretfully the situation has continued to remain almost the same, with the subsequent governments that have ruled the country and as of today the GOI expenditure on education remains as low as 1.2% of GDP of the country. You the Citizens will have to decide whether GOI should invest more on properly educating our poor bright students, to enable them to achieve economic mobility and escape the parent trap?

Ballot paper better than EVMs The recent bypolls to 4 Lok Sabha and 9 Assembly seats have thrown up some unexpected results. This time around the EVMs and VVPATs were the undisputed winners. In the two prestigious Lok Sabha seats from UP, 21% malfunctioning machines in Khairana and 19% in Bhandara-Gondia were replaced! Officials cited 'heat and dust' as the reason for the high rate of malfunctioning. Personally, I don't believe that there's any substance in the allegations of tampering. What I'm concerned about is the large scale malfunctioning of the machines which can have disastrous consequences, if repeated, in the next general elections. Curiously in the 2014 general elections, held around the same time of the year as these bypolls, malfunctioning was not much of concern. In the next general elections 2019

about 2 million EVMs will be used (1.8 million were used in 2014). Assuming only 10% malfunction in the next general election in May 2019 ( with the same 'heat and dust' weather conditions as today) we have a sure recipe for disaster. The official diagnosis of 'heat and dust' for the malfunctioning of machines seems very flimsy. If the machines are so vulnerable to weather conditions, very likely, in winter they may catch a cold or sore throat and during the monsoon they may in all likelihood succumb to dengue or chikungunya! There is a strong case for reverting to the ballot paper. Counting of votes may take a few hours more, but that's not an issue when the general elections are stretched over several weeks. —Prof Robert Castellino Mumbai

vangelist Billy Graham defined a father: “A ‘good father’ is one of the most unsung, unpraised and unnoticed; but one of the most valuable assets in our society. Yet, anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a Dad!”

ish priests – for St Paul declares: “I became your father in Christ” ( 1Corinthians 4:15).

Historical Perspectives: Father’s Day originated in the USA, when an orphan girl, Grace Clayton lobbied her local Methodist ministers for a Church service in honor of the 362 fathers who died after the Monogah Mining Disaster in December 1907. Their deaths orphaned nearly 1,000 children, and Grace wanted to pay tribute to them. Finally in 1972 President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June (this year 17 June, 2018) as Father’s Day!

Why MEN are Important - (From the Internet): You can’t spell (Madam) without the (Adam)! Neither can you spell (Woman) without the (Man)! You also cannot spell (Female) without the (Male)! Nor spell (She) without the (He)! And you cannot write (Mrs.) without the (Mr.)! And finally, we end our prayers by saying (Amen) and not (A-woman)! And here is my take – Butyou require a (Woman) to Wo(o) Man!

The Catholic Church also commemorates a similar festival on 19 March, thefeastday of St Joseph, who is referred to as the fatherly, Nutritor Domini – Nourisher of the Lord! It is also common for Catholics to honor their ‘spiritual fathers’, as well as their par-

Pope Francis on the “Our Father”!: At his regular Wednesday general audience on 14 March 2018, Pope Francis centered the ‘Catechism of the Holy Mass’ on the recitation of the “Our Father”! (Matthew 6:9-13). “How many times people say, ‘Our Father’, but do not feel, this is ‘Our Father’, the ‘Father’ of humanity, the ‘Father’ of Jesus Christ! Do you have a relationship with this ‘Father’?” “When we recite this ‘prayer’, are we connecting with a loving ‘Father’? The Holy Spirit provides us with this connection to God ‘Our Father’! What better prayer can there be for uniting us later in Eucharistic Sacramental Communion with God, than the one taught by His Son Jesus?” “We request ‘Our Father’ to give us ‘today’, the day to be holy and receptive to the needs of our neighbor. The ‘daily bread’ gives us the strength to live physically and sacramentally as children of God, not only ‘today’, but throughout the year.” “We then ask God to ‘forgive our sins’ and in return to pledge ‘our forgiveTHE SECULAR CITIZEN

ness of others’. It is not easy to forgive those who have hurt us. But the Lord gives us peace and the grace to forgive.” “Finally, we ask God to ‘deliver us from every evil’, not only from the ‘temptations that lead us to commit evil’ in thought, word and actions; but also from the ‘Evil One’ – hell-bent to separate us from God’s love, and the love towards neighbor.” On Disciplining children: It is our responsibility to bring up children in the training and the instruction of the faith. The Letter to the Hebrews strongly advocates: “Our fathers disciplined us for a while, as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but rather painful. However, later on it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained” (Heb. 12:10-11). Another Biblical Parallel: Our Good Lord Jesus compared us: “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more Your ‘Father’ Who is in heaven give the ‘Holy Spirit’ to those who ask Him?” (Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is the Lord and Giver of life, the good things in life, which are to be enjoyed in a sincere manner lawfully, and in moderation, as St. John reveals: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” (3 John 1:4). —Dr. Trevor Colaso, Memphis, TN. Thank you, Modiji

At last the Acche Din have arrived. Forget the Rs 15 lacs in your account promised before the elections. We are fortunate to get Rs 0.01 reduction in petrol prices during these trying days. What a relief! Can we really ask for anything more? A lot of people especially the opposition have been hounding the government of doing nothing and they have been floored today with an earth shattering reduction in petrol prices. No need to bring petrol under GST now. We always thought that the NDA is not capable of taking any hard decisions. How wrong have we been! Thank you Modiji! You have, like Moses in Biblical times, taken us to the Promised Land – a land of paradise [Acche Din]. You have lived up to our expectations and that is something we should be grateful for your chhappar phadke largesse. To see such glorious days, we must have done something good in our past life. In fact, we should go down on our knees and appreciate your miraculous touch. No other Prime Minister as achieved this feat. We are lucky. With one stroke you have demolished the entire opposition. Actually we should be thankful to the oil companies for that magnanimity. These companies must have worked hard, day and night, to arrive at such a figure to give succour to the masses. Actually, we forgot that the oil companies are autonomous except when it is election time like we saw, many times in the past, during Karnataka elections. During such periods their autonomy stands suspended through oral diktats and they meekly, as expected, accept the government. They have no choice. Or maybe they, on their own accord, freeze the prices during the crucial campaigning period, to ingratiate themselves to the masters and get their due rewards for doing their bit. But if international crude prices go down during elections their autonomy is restored and the prices are brought down post haste. What a marvelous arrangement! No wonder we are such a successful nation – an envy of the world. Actually, all institutions function independently under any government. Take the case of NIA. Cases which affect the interests of the ruling party never really come up. Where such cases come up and if the court verdicts

11-17 June 2018

VIEWS on NEWS go against, such verdicts are not challenged. Take the CBI which was once called caged parrot by the Apex court. Things have not improved much. Today the parrot is let out once in a way. Cases against opposition leaders especially if they are inimical to the ruling dispensation come up quickly – The Chidambarams for example. We have the police force in Delhi. When UPA was at the helm, Sunanda Taroor case was weak but when the NDA came to power the same weak case becomes strong. The election commission is an independent body but its actions of late have raised certain issues. It faced flak when Karnataka election date was announced by a BJP functionary before the official declaration by the commission at the press conference. The only institution that has by and large remained unsullied is the Supreme Court of India. There have been issues within the judiciary but that cannot be attributed to any outside interference. The CJI showed tremendous maturity when the Congress approached the Apex court at mid-night with a petition against Karnataka governor’s stand. Coming back to the paisa politics, let the BJP show that is really serious about the petrol prices and either bring it under GST or have a fixed rate of duty per litre both at the Centre as well as States. Once you have this system in place, the government will get fixed revenue even if the rates nose dive as they did when the NDA came to power. For a product like petrol [or even diesel] which is so price sensitive, it is necessary to keep the prices as stable as possible. Don’t play one paisa joke on us.

BJP’s Intelligentsia

One must admit that the ruling party at the centre is endowed with really brainy people and surely Biplab Deb the CM of Tripura must rank amongst the best. What a level of intelligence? The top brass of the party like Amit Shah, Narendra Modi and others must be proud of him, not forgetting the RSS whose product he is. What an amazing knowledge of ancient history as well as the contemporary world. Even before he won the elections he had said any vote for CPM would automatically go to the BJP thereby fueling opposition fears THE SECULAR CITIZEN

by Marshall Sequeira on the infallibility of the EVM gadgets. No sooner he took charge; statues of Lenin were razed to the ground. He advised the youth not to aspire for government jobs and instead open pan shops and even rear cows. What a forward looking concept in the 21st century. Of course at national level people talk a lot about pakoras. He did not want Mechanical Engineers to apply for Civil Services. The Tripura CM is averse to criticism. He has said the nails of those who criticize his government should be plucked out. Surprising nobody dragged him to court for his irresponsible statement. His loaded comments on Diana Hayden were unbecoming of a Chief Minister. His master piece came when he said that internet was available during the Mahabharata era. The BJP Gujarat CM maintained that Google was invented in India. Biplab Deb maintained that Buddha walked to Japan and Myanmar and that Rabindranath Tagore refused his Noble prize for his opposition to the British rule instead of Jallianwala Baug massacre. Someone said Sita was a Test Tube baby. If all this was not enough, the young CM, while quoting from his book – Wisdom, said that a person who is not a good homemaker and can’t keep his own family happy, can never make his country happy, cannot be a good Chief Minister neither can he be a good Prime Minister. His words of wisdom must have impressed the BJP in general and Narendra Modi in particular. The PM of this country must be a forgiving man but how come all his critics are totally sidelined like Yashwant Sinha or made margadarshaks and never to be consulted? On the contrary, Advaniji with folded hands in reverence was totally ignored recently [and insulted] on the stage in full view of the huge gathering. Is that the new sanskruti that we are talking about all the time of late?

Sky Is Not the Limit

I

t is that time of the year when most teenagers remain puzzled with their career choices. Education has gone beyond boundaries and the modes through which one can access any course are just at the click of a button. The common question that most of us ask while we opt for a line of study is, whether our choice has a scope in the future?

Fear causes us to set limits. It is the fear of the unimaginable that stops us from thinking beyond. Hence we take the easiest way and set our limits based on what we know about ourselves. Simply judging ourselves based on what we think we are, will only drive us to ask; who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Why not actually ask yourself who are you not to be?” Our deepest fear is not To simplify this that we are inadequate. thought process; firstly Our fear is to look beyond one should make a clear the skies. Sky is just the space over the Earth where the sun, moon, stars, and clouds appear. But there is an entire unexplored cosmic universe out there that is beckoning us—a limitless universe that sets new sights and new standards for goal-setting. We need to look beyond the sky. Do not look at what profession to choose. Instead look at the possibilities that you will have exposure to, because of that profession.

The sky is not the limit, unless you want it to be. Each of us has an inner voice constantly telling us to challenge our inner potential. If Howard Gardner in his theory of multiple intelligences could suggest that every human has multiple areas of abilities, it is left to us to discover that hidden talent, develop it as a hobby, and if need be, make it our profession. Not a single day will feel like a burdensome work and life will be a celebration. Inspiration helps one to achieve what is visible. Aspiration makes you think of the invisible. That is when you realize –Sky is not the limit!

Manipulation: A major red flag in marriage MANIPULATION IS THE process of trying to change another person’s feelings, beliefs or behaviours through indirect tactics. Rather than asking for what they want, manipulative people tend to use deception, coercion, even threats to get their needs met. Manipulation in a relationship is a serious problem because it’s sneaky. Master manipulators can twist your words and actions so that it seems like every mistake you’ve ever made was your idea. It can make you feel crazy, like you’re not in control of your thoughts, feelings and actions. And it can go on forever before you realise it’s happening.

W

e all engage in manipulation from time to time. When your boss asks you what you thought of his or her terrible presentation and you render lavish praise, you’re concealing your real feelings in an attempt to elicit the reaction you want from someone in power. But in close interpersonal relationships, manipulation can take on a much darker hue, leaving its targets never quite knowing where they stand. Everyone knows that sometimes marriages just go wrong. It’s nobody’s fault sometimes; two people just don’t mesh the way they once did or things happen that make life difficult over time and the general reason for that? Manipulation of some kind! It is important to distinguish psychological manipulation and you can do that by knowing the strategies used by your manipulative partner: With holding physical intimation or affection, withholding money or something of value, making you feel shameful or embarrassed, crying, guilt, withdrawal or avoidance, giving the silent treatment, whining, having a temper tantrum, doling out threats and ultimatums, lying or twisting the truth, criticism and disapproval, being vague, blaming, being coercive, showing exaggerated disappointment, twisting the words (or meaning of the words) you said and so

11-17 June 2018

on! Having said that, the root causes for chronic manipulation are complex and deep-seated but whatever drives your partner to be psychologically manipulative, it’s not easy when you’re on the receiving end of such aggression. How can one successfully manage these situations? Well, the answer lies in knowing the signs that you are being manipulated, here are few important keys you need to remember: You are made to feel guilty: Everybody’s wrong sometimes and everybody cries sometimes but if you’re in the wrong 100 percent of the time for years and your spouse won’t or can’t take responsibility for any wrongdoing, chances are they’re full of it. It takes two, people. Using your weaknesses against you: Once your partner sees a weak chink in your armour, he or she uses it over and over to gain the advantage, wounding your ego or taking opportunities to effectively embarrass you with what hurts most. You often feel small: Feel like your needs don’t matter? If your spouse routinely dismisses what you want or need, minimises your concerns and - or calls you ‘ridiculous’, you’re probably being manipulated. Emotional blackmail: This takes the form of intimidation, shaming, guilt-tripping or threatening - saying things like, ‘I’ll die if you leave me’ or ‘I can’t believe you would stoop so low after you did this the other day! You of all people!’ Some manipulators may even resort to rage. They isolate you: One of the more dangerous kinds of manipulation is when, usually in multiple ways, a partner or spouse methodically isolates you from other people. This can come in direct or indirect ways - for instance, by demanding you stay away from your friends or by pretending to be sick every time you want to go out - and THE SECULAR CITIZEN

is usually a control issue. They lie: If you’ve consistently caught your partner in lies, particularly damaging lies, you can bet there are plenty of lies that you haven’t found out about. Big red flag! Playing the innocent: Whenever there’s a conflict, your partner somehow makes himself out to be the injured party - every time. He ends up making you feel for him and you sympathise with his bad experiences. You may even end up comforting him, apologising for something (or everything) and telling him you’ll do better next time. How is it that he becomes the innocent party every time? If you’re with a manipulator, he or she will be very good at making you feel a lot of things but don’t feel that you need to change your partner. Change won’t happen as easily as you think. It takes a lot of time and patience and you should be spending your time protecting your own emotional safety. Know the manipulation tactics and learn what your partner’s favourite weapons against you are so that you can shield yourself. Build up your self-esteem and selfrespect. That is vital. Lastly, if you’re in the position to do so, you may be better off leaving the relationship entirely. CONSEQUENCES OF MANIPULATION • Negative feelings such as dissatisfaction, hurt, resentment, anger and frustration. • A serious sense of self-doubt. • Always defending oneself. •Frequently apologising, even when you believe you did not do anything wrong. • A lack of trust in your partner. • A lack of safety in the marriage. • Overall discontentment with the relationship. • The marriage can easily be sabotaged.

120 years of St Anthony Ashram in M'luru —Ivan Saldanha-Shet. M'luru.

O

n June 12, 1898, Saint Anthony’s in Mangaluru, a home for the homeless and care for the needy, the fruit of a simple devotion came to be at Milagres Church in Hampankatta. Now, it is set to mark 120 years with solemn celebrations, as well as launching of a land mark boon to the people of Mangaluru. The crown of the celebrations are to be on June 12 & 13. The highlight will be, the blessing of the foundation stone for a modern 100 bed block for mentally ill people. “Miracles of Saint Anthony” a Souvenir published in memory of 120 years is released. Bishop of Mangalore, Rev Dr. Aloysius P. D'Souza, highlighting the needs for a mental asylum in St.Anthony Ashram housing hundreds of destitute and orphans for more than a century, he stressed that there was considerable justified expression of need from families to have such a facility, as the impoverished cannot look after the mentally-challenged in the circumstances. “Now it is decided to build a 100-bed facility for the mentally-challenged, where half of it will be dedicated to females. It will have psychiatrists, nurses and caretakers in a modern frame work", he said. As a solemn preparation for the feast TRIDUUM (three days) will be held at Milagres Church at 6 pm. On June 10, Sunday it will start with flag hoisting at 5.30 pm. In view of the 120 years, this year the special feast will be celebrated on two days. The Shrine completes 120 years on June 12. The Saint is specially invoked when any thing is lost. It is believed that when things are lost and if Saint Anthony’s help is sought the lost things are found. It has been testified in number of cases by the devotees. As the people received favours from the Saint the people in gratitude offered their mite in kind and cash. It was in turn distributed to the needy. Gradually houses were put up to house the destitute. In 1930 the land was purchased in court auction in which the present Ashram is situated at Jeppu. Pope Francis Announces “A Call For Holiness”

P

rayer, contemplation and active ministry in the faith should go together for the love of God to be effective in our life. Pope Francis recently exhorted an apostolic ‘Call to Holiness’. He announced this ‘Call’ in his latest document, Gaudete Et Exsultate (Rejoice and be Glad).

The important thing is not whether we are living in a monastery but whether one is living as a true disciple of Christ.” Merton went on to say that contemplation and prayer ‘go together’.

To embrace holiness in our life is an invitation to all peace-loving people. it is the work of the Spirit doing the common things in uncommon ways. There is ‘fake holiness’ that destroys good works, corrupting true holiness. The works of holiness is the right of every person with good intentions and a vision to travel this journey as presented in the Beatitudes with the spirit of humility and understanding. Today, our world is facing a crisis of faith. We need to confront the problem united in prayer, penance and sacrifice. The fanatic crunch on religious belief is affecting all humanity and lifestyles. The Call to Holiness is a 22,000 word document to re-propose the Church’s long-time call to holiness. The laity can also live the “Call to Holiness”. The laity may unite us with God. The grace of the Sacrament of Penance will surely motivate our effort and restore us to the Mercy of God, by contemplation and prayer in piety with true spiritual and directional ministry. Self-control may be a path in holiness to compound the lay shepherd to a spirit-oriented role bringing about the reconciliation of a lost soul, and experience the Lord’s forgiveness and love. The Pontiff’s ‘Call to Holiness’ embraces all the children of God, especially those in pastoral, personal and apostolic ministry. Pope Francis said, Europe and the world must hold on to its Christian legacy.

Life is about the journey: not the destination WHEN IT COMES to life, so many people are focused on the future. We’re so focused on the big picture that we skip over the details. We end up missing out on some of life’s beautiful and important lessons. In fact, by living too much for what is to come, you lose sight of how you got there. It’s the journey that holds the true lessons and tests of character. It is where you are forced to take a good, hard look at yourself and figure out exactly who you are. Sure, it’s great to focus on destinations but the most important thing is that you learn to be happy - right here and now

S

o many of us are rushing through life - focused on the destination, not the journey. A great life, however, is really all about the journey - about what you meet, learn, endure, understand, appreciate, discover and choose along the way. Take a moment to think about your own life. Have you ‘arrived’ at your final destination? Have you achieved everything you’ve hoped to achieve? Travelled everywhere you’ve wanted to visit? Finished everything you’ve wanted to complete? Well, we are sure the answer to most of these questions is ‘no’! The truth is, no matter how much you achieve, accomplish and acquire in life there is always something more to be had. The key to obtaining real peace in our lives is to focus on enjoying the journey, taking the time to ‘smell the roses’ and focusing on what’s really important in life. This doesn’t mean that we have to give up on our dreams and our goals. It’s good to be ambitious; it’s great to want to accomplish enormous things in our life. The key, however, is simply finding the right balance, discovering a mindset that allows us to pursue big things without sacrificing the ‘little things’ that make life worth living. Find joy in the moment and stay inspired. Surround yourself with people who are following their dreams, people who will compliment, inspire and support you through your journey. Let’s understand how during the

11-17 June 2018

journey you realise your passion, gain knowledge, overcome your fears and make memories that will be worth a lifetime: The journey builds character: Character is shaped on the path to your goals. Strength of character is developed throughout the journey via the trials and lessons experienced. You will call upon these lessons when you attain your goal, much like an athlete who spends countless hours in training, honing their performance. Those skills will be harnessed at the appropriate time. It’s about living in the moment: Not everything in life is about working towards the future. When you’re making your way through life and your ultimate destination, take the time to live in each and every moment. Enjoy the time you have and the experiences. Travel, learn, love and get inspired. Savour the journey than arriving: Life is a series of smaller destinations. The goal in life is not to acquire things or have certain people to complete you. Such goals are bound to cause suffering once they vanish from your life - easy come, easy go. When your focus is on the goal alone, you forfeit the lessons and wonderful experiences that lie in between. Your subconscious mind and accompanying biology are formed in such a way as to support your success. Appreciate the journey by trusting that you have the wherewithal to accomplish any task you set your mind upon, once your will and intention are firmly grounded. The journey is the essence of where life exists in all her glory. Goals are meaningless without the intermediary process: The journey is where your goals are formed and realised. If you rush the process and achieve your goal in the shortest amount of time, you for ego the experiTHE SECULAR CITIZEN

sonal self. All that matters is natural flow and not the plan: Don’t get too hung up on your perfect plan in life’s adventures. Nothing is ever as it seems and nothing ever goes the way to expect it to. As soon as you accept that all things come to the right place in the end, the sooner you’ll find happiness. It’s about taking things as they come and going with the flow. It’s about trusting yourself. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is all that matters: Getting too comfortable is the kiss of death. Your comfort zone is literally killing you. Don’t let yourself get trapped in a routine just because it’s easy. Life is about the exploration of the unknown; it’s about breaking barriers and trying new and exciting things. If you’re not scared, you’re not doing it right. Life is all about following your heart: Life isn’t about directions, schedules and plans. It isn’t about listening to others; taking advice or being the person your parents want you to be. It’s about passions, taking risks and learning about yourself along the way. No matter where you go, if you’re following your heart, you’re headed in the right direction. THE SAME MANTRA APPLIES TO A WORKPLACE AS WELL • Imagine and commit to a bold and compelling future for yourself and your team and then fully own the journey of getting there - the ups and downs, the accomplishments and setbacks. • Don’t expect to be brilliant immediately, if you have taken on a big new game. • Keep being driven but stay patient at the same time. • Remember that your journey is about constant progress, not about perfection. • In fact, keep looking at small, medium and large accomplishments that prove the progress to your success.
