THE HEART OF THE MATTER

LECTRONIC security solutions continue their mash-up with IT infrastructure and TCP/IP, with recent developments highlighting the potential for future enhancements that might wake up reactive traditional electronic security solutions, empowering them to deliver users far greater levels of support (and return on investment) than ever before. Analytics is the area of greatest possibility – the future development of analytics is a little scary. Surveillance systems that can identify mood and present alerts to a security team should frown lines cross programmed thresholds are uncomfortable to consider. But such dystopian applications seem far less likely than those that incorporate analytics alongside widespread integration of security systems and sub-systems. Such amalgamations would create clever and powerful management and reporting systems, able to react to events with a sort of automated intuition that could put the GUI projections of Minority Report to shame. From the point of view of security operators, an event detected by analytics would see lights come on, patterns of doors lock or unlock, general issue cardholders denied entry until an event was processed, public alerts to be played, bollards to rise, cameras to spin to an event scene and to cover associated choke points (wicking up image quality and frame rate), maps to be called up on a control room monitor and alerts to be sent to multiple security staff onsite, at adjacent facilities, and to

E

SecTech is the first show of the Australian calendar year and the only security expo in 4 of 5 states this year. local law enforcement personnel. Intelligence that combines integration as well as analytics – not only from video inputs but from audio inputs and smart sensors – has the potential to deliver applications that are almost open-ended in their functionality – the limits are going to relate to risk, budget and return on investment. That latter is an important one, because over-arching solutions that offer clusters of capability rather than single pieces of functionality are certain to be those that have the greatest ROI potential. It’s important for installers and end users to bear in mind that this sort of functionality exists inside the ecosystems of much smaller systems to functional extent and can be shaken out to increase a customer’s sense of the value of their security solution. For instance, a DSC IMPASSA alarm panel with an Alarm.com back-end will react to a piece of toast burning in the kitchen by activating the smoke alarm in the dining room and sounding an alert at the main keypad. As it registers the alarm, the system will take a snapshot of you fanning the smokie with a tea towel and will send this image, along with the alarm event alerts (and your disarming event), to a connected mobile device – all within seconds of the event taking place. It’s the way modern systems work that’s at the heart of the matter. Networked solutions have the capability to inform users and operators of events so quickly that when properly put together they can’t be thought of as static solutions any longer. This ability to communicate events is going to become more profound in the future as integrations

become more widespread and highspeed networking expands from exchange and comms box and inserts itself between multiple systems and devices spread across a site. Of course, the value of such integrations, of such fast reactions and communications, is enhanced by key factors – a central one being the quality of sensing inputs – and not only alarm sensors but surveillance cameras, associated analytics engines, bandwidth of network services and thoughtful cyber security settings. When it comes to electronic security solutions you get what you pay for but it’s important to note that old prices buy vastly superior performance for the discerning buyer, the value proposition of the best electronic security technologies is simply outstanding. We’re going to get a good look at some of these new technologies at SecTech Roadshow this month – SecTech is the first show of the Australian calendar year and the only security expo in 4 of 5 states this year. SecTech opens in Melbourne on May 8, is in Brisbane on May 10, Sydney on May 15, Adelaide on May 27 and finishes up in Perth, on May 23. Leading manufacturers and distributors including CSD, Pelco, Honeywell, Video Alarm Technologies, Bosch, Dahua, ISCS, Video Security Products, Consolidated Security Merchants, C. R. Kennedy, OSA, Seadan, BGW Technologies, Q Security Systems, Mobotix, Vivotek, LSC, Hikvision and ICT will be showing all their latest and best electronic security solutions. OCEANIA CCTV MARKET GROWING AT CAGR OF 4.8 PER CENT TO 2021 OCEANIA’S CCTV market is reported to have been worth $A230 million in 2017 and is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8 per cent from 2016 to 2021. This is higher than that of East

n

Asia, North America or Western Europe, and is largely due to growing demand from government and infrastructure projects. According to the latest Video Surveillance Intelligence Service

report by IHS Markit, Australia is the biggest video surveillance equipment market in Oceania, more than 8 times the market size of the second biggest country New Zealand. While the region

outside Australia and New Zealand is forecast to grow fastest at a CAGR of 13.2 per cent from 2016 to 2021, driven by investment in large infrastructure projects in Papua New Guinea and Fiji, Australia and New Zealand are still forecast to account for more than 99 per Vlado centDamjanovski of Oceanian market revenues by 2021. Chinese vendors are estimated to have greatly increased their share in the Oceanian market in recent years. There are a few major local vendors and only one of them featured in the top 10 vendor list. The

supply base remains more fragmented in Oceania than in the overall Asian market but more concentrated than in Americas, Europe and Middle East Asia. Another feature of the Oceanian market is that average selling prices (ASPs) tend to be higher than elsewhere. The ASP of network cameras in Oceania is more than triple the global average price. One major reason is that the cost of installation and maintenance is very high, and the cost of equipment accounts for lower share in total project cost.

AVIGILON ADDS HAIR, CLOTHING, GENDER, AGE TO APPEARANCE SEARCH n AVIGILON Control Center (ACC) 6.10 video management software Appearance Search will allow operators to search using parameters including hair and clothing colour, gender, and age – dramatically increasing the system’s discernment and search speeds. “While investigating critical events, time is of the essence, and security operators are often provided physical descriptions of the people involved,” said Dr. Mahesh Saptharishi, Avigilon’s chief technology officer.

“Operators can now use those descriptions and within seconds Avigilon Appearance Search AI engine can search all cameras across an entire site to find a person of interest.”

MELBOURNE PLANS CAR-FREE SUPERBLOCKS AFTER VEHICLE ATTACKS n MELBOURNE City Council is reported to be considering creating car-free superblocks that will facilitate pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion in the CBD. One superblock would cover an area inside the boundary of Bourke, Flinders, Elizabeth and William Sts – the streets within the boundary would become pedestrian thoroughfares, with emergency, delivery and authorised resident vehicles given access via automated rising bollards and restricted to a speed

limit of 10kmph. Also under consideration is a 30kmph go-slow zone in the Hoddle Grid and around Docklands – goslow zones are prevalent in many European cities and towns, with cars required to give way to cyclists and pedestrians in those areas. There have been 2 vehicle attacks in Melbourne over the past 18 months – one on Bourke St Mall, and another outside Flinders St Station. In the wake of the Bourke St Mall attack, Melbourne City Council moved to

WE BELIEVE THAT OUR OPEN PLATFORM AND PARTNER COMMUNITY WILL BE THE DRIVING FORCE FOR OUR CONTINUED GROWTH AND INNOVATION AND HELP US STAY AT THE FOREFRONT OF A MORE INTELLIGENT WORLD.

DJI INTEGRATES FLIR THERMAL SENSOR TO ZENMUSE XT2 DRONE n FLIR Systems reports that DJI will integrate FLIR thermal imaging sensor technology into its new DJI Zenmuse XT2 drone camera. The DJI Zenmuse XT2, distributed locally by CRK, is DJI’s first dual-sensor and its most advanced gimbal-stabilized camera for commercial drone applications. DJI’s Zenmuse XT2 expands upon the benefits in the first thermal-equipped camera jointly developed by FLIR and DJI, the DJI Zenmuse XT. The new drone camera includes both a highdefinition 4K color video camera and a highresolution radiometric thermal camera, allowing operators to switch between thermal and visible cameras in flight.

The Zenmuse XT2 also uses FLIR’s patented MSX technology, or multispectral dynamic imaging, that embosses high-fidelity, visible-light details onto the thermal imagery to enhance image quality and perspective. The Zenmuse XT2 is compatible with the DJI Matrice 600 and Matrice 200 Series platforms and integrates with DJI’s data transmission technology for live video display. Full integration gives drone operators plug-and-play installation, real-time control, and recording during flight in thermal, visible, or thermal/visible picture-in-picture. This flexibility allows operators to acquire double the data in a single camera and stay focused on missioncritical tasks.

ARA DISTRIBUTING CCTV’S LOWLIGHT CHAMPION - SONY SNC-VB770 n ISCS, part of ARA Products, is now distributing CCTV’s leading low light surveillance camera, the full frame Sony SNCVB770 4K. “This camera essentially lets you see in the dark, without the need for infrared illuminators or any additional lighting - it’s amazing,” said Stuart Harmer, managing director of ARA Products. Citing its capacity to deliver cost reducing solutions, Harmer said the Sony VB770 was a game changer for customers in the CCTV market. “It’s very easy to sell low-priced CCTV cameras

into the marketplace - they’re a commodity and their features are comparable. But to really make a difference in this market is hard,” Harmer said. “The Sony VB770 offers the end user a lot of functionality - it’s a highend yet cost effective solution.” According to Mark Franklin, Sony Video Security Solutions’ technical product manager, the VB770 is unique in its capacity to enable smooth colour video in minimum illumination. “The VB770 features ultra-high sensitivity, offering full colour,

even in a pitch black environment,” Franklin said. “The 4K high resolution is a video broadcast standard rather than a megapixel still image format, which provides native resolution, in widescreen (16:9) format and real time frame rates. The 35mm full frame sensor captures more light, so the image doesn’t need to be amplified so much - other cameras have smaller pickups, requiring the image to be amplified many times, resulting in a noisy, grainy image.” “The challenge for surveillance cameras in

the past was providing high resolution colour images in low light or darkness - in these conditions, a thermal camera would normally be used which

allows the detection of movement with thermal imaging,” Franklin said. “The Sony VB770 allows you to identify, rather than just detect.

You’ve got a sexy front end and a sophisticated back end.

LENDLEASE PLANS COMMS, SECURITY, CCTV UPGRADE FOR $A615 MILLION GAWLER RAIL PROJECT n LENDLEASE has sought expressions of interest for the supply and installation of electrical equipment including power, lighting, communications, security, CCTV and earthing systems across 27 stations on South Australia’s Gawler rail line.

HIKVISION OPENS SECURITY INDUSTRY’S FIRST SOURCE CODE TRANSPARENCY CENTER n HIKVISION has opened a new Source Code Transparency Center (SCTC) in California in an effort to demonstrate the manufacturer’s commitment to product security and transparency. At the first stage, the center enables government agencies in the United States and Canada to review the source code for a wide array of select IP

cameras and NVRs sold by Hikvision. Interested parties wanting to initiate a request for access to the SCTC can contact a member of the Hikvision sales team. A staffer will then work with individuals to schedule an appointment to visit the center, located here at the company’s U.S.-based headquarters, as well as provide the required

nondisclosure agreement for signature. Alex Asnovich, senior director, corporate marketing, Hikvision North America, told SSI much deliberation went into the decision to open what the company bills as the first facility of its kind in the security industry and potentially risk losing competitive advantages. “This is challenging because we want to be transparent, however, source code is confidential, intellectual property. A lot of discussion and planning went into deciding how to achieve a satisfactory level of transparency while still keeping control of our intellectual property,” he said.

The scope of works includes the installation of overhead wiring, masts and gantries, a new signalling system, an automatic train protection system and a new fibre optic cable to support communications across the 42km distance of the Gawler line. Lendlease is in the

process of delivering Stage 1 of the Gawler Rail Electrification Project, designed to deliver faster, safer and more reliable rail services for the northern suburbs of Adelaide. The Gawler line carries more than 17,000 passengers per day, making it one of Adelaide’s busiest.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL STADIUMS ADD BIOMETRIC SCREENING n FANS attending Braves, Athletics and Mariners baseball games will now get faster entry using CLEAR biometric kiosks as the grounds add biometric screening to speed up arrival times. Atlanta Braves’ SunTrust Park, Oakland Athletics’ Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and Seattle Mariners’ Safeco Field have all implemented the CLEAR biometric identity platform, which is now used by 11 professional sports teams across the MLB, NBA and MLS. “Sports venues are starting to look more and more like airports from a security and experience perspective,” says Lauren Stangel, CLEAR’s head of

sports and events. “Baseball stadiums have 40,000 to 50,000 people entering through the gates almost 50 per cent of whom arrive between 15 minutes before the first pitch.” CLEAR makes its stadium access available for free for those who sign up. Visitors can enrol in the program at participating stadiums. During screening, users verify their identities by pressing a finger to a touch pad or looking into an iris scanner.

ESL INSTALLS DAHUA, TECOM FOR A MAJOR BANK IN FIJI Electro Security Ltd is in the process of upgrade transitions at 3 Bank branches in Fiji –Namaka, Lautoka and Nausori. The completed solutions will incorporate Dahua IP CCTV systems and Tecom Challenger 10 access control systems.

BANK in Fiji is replacing legacy digital and analogue surveillance solutions and mechanical access control at 3 branches. Integrator Electro Security Ltd, which is handling the integration, specialises in supplying electronic security solutions for the financial sector and has had a working relationship with this major bank in Fiji and elsewhere in the Pacific, since 2001. According to Ran Vijay Singh, founder and managing director, ESL is handling all the work, including designing the solutions. “As well as visiting the branches to get a sense of

A

their security requirements, we also use floor plans to lay out all the security devices – this includes strategic locations and mountings for CCTV, security alarm system and integrated access control,” Vijay Singh explains. According to Vijay Singh, video surveillance and access control are the core systems being upgraded at the branches. “The upgrade work calls for a complete transition to an NVR-based Dahua CCTV IP solution, with integrated Tecom Challenger 10 access control and alarm system handling access and alarm events and reporting,” he says. ESL’s work with this major bank has a significant historical element. “This upgrade is the latest work we have done for this client here in Fiji - ESL has been engaged with the Group since 2001, initially as service and maintenance backup for installed branch electronic security, later to handle complete integration of electronic security technology – this means we have serviced and installed a range of technologies as they have evolved,” Vijay Singh explains. “Back in 2001, bank branches Fiji-wide had VCR time lapse recorders with Panasonic analogue cameras installed by New Zealand-based local integrator, Security Systems, which dominated the security industry in Fiji in those days. When we first began partnering with our client, some branches still used standalone still – picture cameras where ribbon films needed to be removed to develop pictures in labs for verification. In 2002, we approached our client’s property department to talk about introducing the first Pacom DVR technology and ESL was awarded a tender in 2003/2004 for branches in Lautoka and Namaka for a complete CCTV transition and changeover. “This was well received by the stakeholders at the time due to the ease of DVR operation, footage retention and retrieval with H264 video compression feature and DI resolution camera picture quality. Later ATM machines introduced by our client required pinhole cameras, ATM booth dome cameras and external vandal-proof IK10/IP66 IR cameras for low light areas.” According to Vijay Singh, their client’s Group Security, Group Property and Project Management laid out performance specifications and an Approved Product List, including Global Standards, for their retail network security applications. For all retail refurbishments, transitions and upgrades required ESL adheres to these installation standards, specifications and compliance. “This standardisation meant that with these latest upgrades at Namaka, Lautoka and Nausori, we worked on a single platform with an approved product specification for all retail outlets, introducing IP cameras with face recognition capabilities, correct megapixel resolution, infrared technology, IP66rated weatherproofing, IK10-rated vandal proofing, power over ethernet (POE) and protective housings

Lautoka main street

for external cameras,” he explains. “Strategic positioning of cameras from conventional installations has also changed with increased risk factors, with additional coverage required for waiting areas, cash counting desk, cash lobbies, vaults, safe rooms and teller areas requiring cameras to capture customer and overhead camera viewing cash transactions on the counter, covering cash draws and lockers.” When it comes to storage, network video recorders with higher capacity hard drives for video retention periods of 3 months or longer and video export transfer for footage retrievals are required. ESL is responsible for ensuring the installed NVR system is tamperproof, and that the client’s authorised staff are given restricted access for video playback and clip copy. Other programming parameters are protected by admin passwords retained by ESL - this safeguards the client and the service provider from any form of retained video archive breaches.

WALKING THE SITES When we visit the 2 branches just prior to upgrade, it’s plain to see these are very busy bank branches indeed, with many tellers and loads of customers. It’s easy to make the mistake of thinking Fiji’s relatively small population would make for quiet branches but that’s not so. The bustling branch at Lautoka is as busy as any bank branch I’ve seen in Sydney, and Namaka is not far behind, with queues to the door. Interesting too, in both locations branch management is highly engaged with the electronic security upgrade and has very clear ideas about what’s required to protect their branch operations and ensure staff safety, right down to camera placement. At the Namaka branch, I get a look at the existing solution, which is an analogue system supported by DVRs, installed around 2006. There are Ganz cameras, a Ganz DVR, a Paradox alarm system and mechanical access control on doors – everything

is in good working order but clearly the latest high resolution IP cameras with enhanced WDR capability will be a major improvement. Card-based access control will also make managing staff access much easier, while providing a detail event log. “All the mechanical access control locks will be replaced by a Tecom Challenger 10 access control, prox readers and an alarm system, with a Dahua IP CCTV system supported in a network room and no hardware in the branch office,” Vijay Singh tells me. “The new surveillance strategy is designed to ensure staff are able to see in front of and behind tellers - cameras will be mounted above so tellers don’t block a camera’s view of customers at the counter. “This will show incidents of theft and accidental losses and we will also be able to see if a customer is accidentally overpaid. Accidents are more common than anything else. We’ve heard of incidents in which bank documents have fallen from counters into rubbish bins after being bumped by a busy teller’s elbow - the new system will show the client’s management events like this.” Next, we take a look at the Lautoka branch, which will be the first branch to undergo the upgrade

THE CAMERA VIEWS MUST BE FROM UP HIGH, SO CUSTOMERS’ FACES CAN BE SEEN, NOT JUST THE BACKS OF STAFF, AND HIGHER QUALITY FOOTAGE IS ALSO VITAL. process. Lautoka is a busy town with a tree-lined main street stretching far into the distance. The branch in Lautoka is packed. There are 55 cameras here, all analogue. This relatively large solution is supported by venerable Pacom PDR D1s with 16 inputs. I spend some time looking at the workstation monitor to get sense of performance – these cameras are up to 10 years old and while they do their job well enough, they show weaknesses against backlight compared to the latest technologies – which is very much what you’d expect. Their lower resolution is apparent, too. “This site will be undergoing a structural upgrade as well as a security upgrade,” Vijay Singh says. “Of course, during the staging process the old cameras will need to be moved to give proper views, so security levels remain consistent.” We have an interesting experience in Lautoka. Branch manager, Linda, comes out to greet us.

Fiji AS TECHNOLOGY CHANGES, TECHNICAL STAFF REQUIRE TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION TO BE COMPLIANT WITH INSTALLATIONS – THAT PROCESS IS ONGOING.

Immediately, it’s clear she’s right across the security upgrade and intends right there and then, to ensure it will give her team exactly what it needs for security and safety during and after the upgrade process. “The camera views must be from up high, so customers’ faces can be seen, not just the backs of staff, and higher quality footage is also vital,” she says. Next, she points out the blooming of WDR at the main entrance on the workstation monitor and says it’s a problem, too. Staff need to be able to see faces outside the door and as customers come inside. “And we want coverage of the whole of the carpark during the upgrade,” Linda says. “At the moment we only have this part (she points), but we need to see the door as well as the carpark.” It’s not uncommon for security managers to be possessive of their security solutions and have clearly defined ideas about performance and capability. Linda’s intensely serious stance on the security and safety of her team shows that mindset applies to the client’s operational managers, too.

CHALLENGES OF THE APPLICATIONS The security upgrades at Namaka and Lautoka began a couple of months ago and according to Vijay Singh, there have been several challenges. “Security setup for any commercial bank comes with challenges, especially with risk factors and fraud case complications requiring camera picture clarity for face recognition, currency captures, internal pilferage cases and quality video evidence presentable in a court of law,” he explains. “Sometimes different divisions of the bank require specialised applications – for example, covert camera installations requiring specialised installation skills and product acquisition. Other

Lautoka municipal market

challenges include turnaround times for backup service and breakdowns, scheduled maintenance programs and online technical support 24hrs. “Another challenge of any job is keeping abreast of upcoming security technology required by a client for upgrades – as technology changes, technical staff require training and certification to be compliant with installations – that process is ongoing.” When it comes to this upgrade, installation challenges at Namaka, Lautoka and Nausori include the fact they are live sites with certain areas being closed during a structural upgrade process. Working on a site that is open for business makes things more difficult, but these sites are not just live, they are partial building sites. “The 3 branches where we are undertaking our upgrades are also in the process of being refurbished – this means the upgrade process can be cumbersome at times,” Vijay Singh explains. “Partial cabling, catenary cable suspension, coring and penetrations when completed in single phase are all so much easier than getting half the job done then downing tools and waiting for other sub-contractors to finish their required works. “Making things more challenging still, existing security electronic equipment needs to be relocated in real time to provide continuity of coverage and performance across all aspects of branch operations. Then there are the usual issues, including cooperating with other sub-contractors, project delays, weather conditions (recent hurricanes) and

ALL THE PRODUCTS BEING USED ARE CLIENT-APPROVED AS STIPULATED IN ITS PROTECTIVE ELECTRONIC STANDARD, WHICH REQUIRES BEST PRACTICE STANDARDS WITH RELEVANT COUNTRIES. other contributing factors could impact on the tender value for the project. “Frankly, I think that with a live site, an upgrade is much easier whether it be an existing system upgrade or a complete transition, if there’s less hindrance from other projected works on site. Once the new system is in place, the old installation is decommissioned, and you can provide required end user training and handover in shortest possible time.” At the heart of the installation is cabling – in some applications it’s possible to retain some old cabling and equipment that remains in good condition but in these 3 applications that’s not going to be possible as the old system used analogue cameras linked to DVRs and the new system is full IP. “With CCTV, analogue transitions to IP require complete cable replacement from the conventional RG5/6/11 to Cat 5/6 for video transfer mediums as required,” Vijay Singh explains. “Normally, with all new installations, we remove old cabling, clear the ceiling, then check the condition of cable catenary and trays so see what could be refurbished and reused. “Alarm system and access control cable is checked for continuity and voltage drops, we undertake physical checks for moisture damage or copper oxidisation, and any other factors that might hinder the new installation. If there’s any doubt about cabling or cable infrastructure whatever, complete replacements are carried out for new installations to avoid any failures.” All the products being used are client-approved as stipulated in its Protective Electronic Standard, which requires best practice standards with relevant countries. When it comes to the surveillance solution, both branches need to manage low light conditions in internal and external areas. “We opt to use IR internal and external cameras to avoid upgrading at later stage in the event the site’s might experience instances of internal pilferage, with workers and sub-contractors accessing the branches after hours and working in low light areas or in case anyone deliberate switches off lights.” Vijay Singh says the cameras will be set to standard specifications, given the nature of the applications. He says the focus is to keep functionality high and costs low – most clients want court-admissible evidence and easy operation. “For surveillance applications like this we mostly use 2.8-12mm varifocal lenses – we find this range covers almost everything we might need, and we tend to use the wider end of the lens - 2.8mm -

Ran Vijay Singh, ESL

particularly for internal applications,” Vijay Singh explains. “2MP is the resolution we use, as well as IP66 and IK10 ratings against weather and vandalism – indoors and outdoors – and we install our systems on dedicated, cybersecure subnets.” Storage is another area of consideration. “The Dahua NVRs we are using are capable of 24000GB HDD capacity, though to meet its requirements, 8000-1200GB delivers our client 3-month retention, depending on external camera traffic and this storage capacity can be increased as required,” he says. Access control and intrusion detection are also core aspects of the upgrades at Namaka, Lautoka and Nausori. “Cardax (Gallagher) access control and Tecom alarm systems are also approved hardware for the client’s retail network,” says Vijay Singh. “ESL techs are certified Tecom Challenger 10 integrators and are trained and certified by engineers from Hills NZ. Instead of using 2 types of head-end hardware, we will use Tecom Challenger 10s for access control, with corresponding 4-door controllers, IO boards and Tecom readers. Expansion and relay boards are interfaced for burglar alarms, emergency switches, seismic detectors and alerting devices.” According to Vijay Singh, when completed the new electronic security solutions will give management far greater control than they’ve ever had before, as well as giving excellent image quality for investigations, should this ever be required. n

SecTech Roadshow 2018

Camera and FlexPower Base Station were awarded the best product in the monitoring category – in this case the monitoring is done by the property owner via an app. The notion of cameras as intelligent sensors is as old as E-Pic but when they take out coveted awards, it’s another thing altogether. How good is the camera really? Well, it’s 720p and has a 130-degree angle of view, so it’s going to be soft. There’s an IR range of 7.5 metres to help at night. The camera is battery powered via a USB port and transmits its video stream across 2.4GHz wireless. Obviously, a product like this can’t be taken to represent the evolution of IP in the electronic security industry – the real heavyweights at ISC West depend on higher quality image streams – analytics solutions that are designed to turn the industry’s entire installed base of surveillance cameras into proactive crime fighting machines. This is tougher than it sounds, which is why analytics have been the latest breakthrough for so many years. The latest developments certainly seem promising – accuracy rates have climbed into the mid-90 percentile based on ever smaller datasets - the ability of cameras to learn has ncreased and their learning time has decreased. These smarts are also beginning to permeate into simpler systems that offer users serious operational benefits. But perhaps the biggest deal about analytics now is that almost every manufacturer is doing something with them – it’s the all-aboard status that gives analytics so much momentum. Of course, analytics and the data they generate must be carefully managed – for the general public, the idea security systems are spying on them is likely to generate the sort of negative feedback loop that has denied biometric authentication devices success for decades. The way around these fears is to ensure the technology is placed in safe hands and protected by appropriate privacy protocols. Face recognition is an appealing application, as is license plate recognition in many applications. But the great strength of analytics is the ability to make searchers faster and more discerning for investigators. Being able to pare searches down to specifics like a brown-haired man wearing sunglasses and a hat and a red shirt working from left to right at a certain time, or to search for a child with black hair wearing a yellow dress, site-wide, is

better still. Have analytics finally arrived in full force? It’s difficult to say for certain but we’ll get a taste of the possibilities at SecTech Roadshow. One such product is iMQ by Imagus, which will be displayed by BGWT at SecTech. iMQ is an advanced real-time software that reliably detects and recognises human faces using CCTV cameras, webcams and smartphones. iMQ captures faces non-cooperatively from a distance and/or in motion, and can be deployed as an independent application, or seamlessly integrated into existing biometric solutions and video management systems. Features include video-based face recognition from low quality surveillance and mobile video, face recognition from still images against low quality image data sets, network-centric scalable data capture of images from one to millions, smartphone and tablet image capture/analysis and seamless integration of smart devices to internet connected remote data sets for matching and retrospective search functionality. The algorithm is trained on all faces captured via face recognition-enabled cameras. This allows for searching of historical faces enrolled after the event. There’s face recognition from high definition digital cameras up to 16MP (equivalent to 50 analogue cameras), scalable vision processing architecture based on parallel banks of graphic processors on video graphics cards to accelerate search speed, image collection speed, and the number of cameras supported by each processor. This off-core processing can be done post-processing as a batch or in the cloud, face recognition of crowds with simultaneous multiple person acquisition and analysis, and multiple camera tracking based on automatic enrolment and identification/tracking through the network of cameras. CSD will show its integration of Inner Range Integriti, Milestone Access Control Manager and Ipsotek Facial Recognition. Ipsotek video analytics delivers facial recognition, LPR, crowd management and other video analytics. With this integration, an Ipsotek facial recognition, LPR or analytic event can trigger Integriti and automatically pop up a vector map and then zoom a camera into the area where the event

has been occurred, pop up live video, send push notifications to staff, create alerts, report to, security control rooms, unlock doors and seamlessly record all these actions to the event log. This is the sort of real world capability that’s going to be appealing to serious integrators and security managers. Another neat application of analytics is delivered by Davantis from Video Alarm Technologies. Davantis provides an advanced perimeter protection solution for intrusion, loitering, tampering object removal and stopped vehicle detection that’s based on coverage from an existing CCTV solution. Events are sent to a monitoring station or they can be transmitted to a security manager or security officer’s mobile device for immediate response. Another company that’s getting into analytics is Dahua Technology, which showed a pair of cameras at ISC West incorporating AI. The IPC-HF8242F-FR AI Network 2MP Box camera performs complex facial recognition without additional licenses or servers. By interpreting video data at the source, the camera dissects and learns data for easier processing and higher efficiency. The camera includes human facial feature extraction, real-time facial snapshots, and a comparison database of up to 10,000 face images and 5 libraries that are stored on-board. The facial recognition feature enables a proactive way to

identify persons of interest before an incident occurs. As well as offenders, Dahua says the camera will alert operators to the faces of ‘disgruntled persons’ thanks to real time facial analysis that includes 6 types of facial features – age, gender, expression, glasses, mouth mask, and moustache and 5 types of expressions including jolly, normal, surprised, sad, and enraged. Meanwhile, the IVSS7016 all-in-one 16-channel AI NVR supports 4K ultra HD resolution for recording, live viewing and playback and combines video

management functions with traditional video storage, video decoding and deep learning in one device. This AI NVR can store up to 100,000 faces in the image database and a maximum of 10 million face metadata or face images. Then there’s MIC IP fusion 9000i PTZ camera from Bosch, an advanced PTZ surveillance platform that incorporates a high performance thermal imaging core and a 1080p starlight camera integrated in the same ruggedized housing. This allows the camera to deliver simultaneous thermal and visible video streams, maximizing the ability to detect and react to long-range threats – up to 4517m. But where the MIC Fusion really delivers is with metadata fusion. This fuses the metadata of the camera’s built-in optical and thermal imager, providing users with full situational awareness – regardless of whether it’s the optical or thermal video stream that’s being watched. Metadata fusion helps users to focus on invisible things that need attention. Another innovation offered by MIC fusion is video analytics while moving. An operator is alerted, or the camera’s intelligent tracking feature is triggered, the moment a moving object or person is detected while the MIC IP camera is panning, tilting or zooming. Once intelligent tracking is activated, it ensures that moving objects are automatically tracked. Hikvision is also bringing a new facial recognition solution to SecTech. The system comprises a Deep-Learning-based facial recognition solution, with functions designed to meet varied scenario requirements and high accuracy of recognition. While it’s easy to get caught up in the hype of analytics, it’s another mistake to ignore the power of the latest integrations. An example of this is Inner Range Integriti’s integration to Honeywell Fire Systems. In the event of fire, Integriti automatically pops up a vector map and zooms a camera into the

area where the alarm has been activated, pops up live video, sends push notifications to staff, creates alerts, reports the event to fire & security control rooms, unlocks doors and seamlessly records all these actions to the event log. What’s beautiful about this integration is that it augments procedures automatically and in virtual real time, taking important but mechanical decisions out of the hands of a stressed security team. Meanwhile, ISCS is showing HID Location Services, which provides accurate, real-time workplace location awareness and analytics. The system combines the power of Bluetooth low-energy, Wi-Fi, and cloud-based technologies to provide a unique, seamless experience inside and outside of a facility. As a result, organizations receive increased visibility into precise locations of their workplace in a defined space and can use predictive analytics to understand space usage and building operational efficiency. Personal and asset beacons are available as a single credential and are used as location services and access control. The gateways allow for fast, easy implementation throughout the organisation. The cloud service platform integrates into existing building management systems for customizable data streams, dashboards, and reports -delivering alerts and notifications to adhere to security policies and simplifying events, workflows, and analytics. The solution can provide building owners with dashboards and reports over time, helping organizations comply with health and safety legislation, like maximum room occupancy regulations. This facilitates collaboration, helping employees locate their co-workers, and improves safety in emergencies. It’s also possible to improve the employee experience by eliminating the chance of visitors and employees becoming lost. By guiding people through a physical space and enhancing their understanding of that space, organizations can offer a valuable and satisfying user experience. Another smart solution is United VMS 8.0 from QSS and FLIR include advanced cyber security with edge device integration, integrated analytic set-up for FC-ID cameras, global administration enhancements, improved video quality of EZ Client and simplified discovery process as well as installation and upgrade improvements. United VMS brings together thermal and optical cameras to assist intrusion detection and response. Analytics is also a core functionality of the new Pelco by Schneider Electric Exsite Enhanced is available in PTZ or fixed models with a built-in wiper and optional adaptive IR illumination. It has Sarix Surevision 3.0 technology providing excellent picture quality in the challenging lighting conditions common to hazardous areas with 130db wide dynamic range and low-light imaging performance using a Full HD 1080p camera producing up to 60 images per second with 30x zoom. analytics including autoTracker, adaptive motion detection, abandoned object, and more. The new direct drive motor mechanism ensures PTZ accuracy, speed and reliability. Exsite is the fastest EX-Proof pan/tilt system available and is virtually indestructible with its rugged 316L billet electro polished stainless-steel construction. Sony SNC-VB642D 1080p dual light bullet camera is another analytic’s-empowered operational solution, which provides full-colour reproduction 24/7 through a combination of automated analytics and white-light technology. The camera can perform in extremely challenging environments and captures crisp, low-noise Full HD images, even in low-light conditions. The sensitive 1/2.8-inch type Exmor R CMOS image sensor is teamed with XDNR processing, improving low-light performance and achieving the minimum illumination of 0.006 lux (30 IRE) in colour mode. In-built motion detection can trigger a range of actions, from storage and transfer of images to sounding of external alarms. False alarms caused by noise, weather and environment are minimised by a smart processing algorithm. Q Alumia Pro NVRs from QSS also feature smart video analytics, solid security features, corridor mode and long-range POE, then there’s the MOBOTIX M16 thermal radiometry camera, which features one thermal and one standard image sensor, enabling a thermal overlay, localising 20 temperature-defined hot spots in the image to highlight potential hazards, automatically triggering alarm events and actions.

Something that is easy to forget is that technology continues to evolve rapidly in all areas of the electronic security market. Over time, technology becomes more powerful, easier to use, more secure, more open to integration, more compact, more reliable and more affordable. A case in point is ICT’s ProtegeGX, which you can see on the ISCS stand, which combines simplicity and enterprise level capabilities that unify access control and intrusion detection. ICT is constantly polishing functionality in order to make its solutions easier to learn and operate. The Protege mobile app extends this capability to the mobile devices of authorised users who can, with the swipe of a finger, connect to any of linked sites and check status, arm or disarm, control lights, locks, signage, heating and cameras. The app provides instant awareness of system status with a simple tap. Subscribe to push notifications to receive alerts of system or sensor activity. Meanwhile, ICT’s tSec readers feature Bluetooth and NFC capability, enabling smartphones to be used as access credentials for maximum convenience. LSC has also expanded the capability of its AMC range with a new wireless panel, XR900, which utilises a 916Mhz bidirectional system and is equipped with 64 wireless zones. It is compatible with all existing AMC wireless and wired products making it a versatile and flexible solution for any alarm installer. Like all AMC products, the XR900 can be managed using the AMC Manager App, available for both iOS and Android devices. The 916MHz bidirectional comms give a wireless range of 1000m and there’s PSTN, siren, batteries included, reporting options of PSTN-IP-GPRS-3G, voice support, 4-wire RS485 bus, and multi-format CMS. AMC’s new bidirectional K-LCD 900 wireless keypad can be powered by batteries (2 batteries AAA – alkaline 1.5V), or via hardwire and features an LCD display 32 characters over 2 lines, and a programmable NFC/RFID tag reader with which it is possible to arm/disarm and enable/disable programmed outputs. Being bidirectional, the keypad allows the user to have real feedback of the status of the system, including not ready zones, troubles, etc. Another security system that highlights the evolution of the industry is the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 from BGWT which has 7-inch HD, edge-toedge, capacitive glass screen with 1280 x 800-pixel resolution and there’s also multigesture capability, with the panel able to be navigated with familiar swipes and gestures. The Interview

STUART PITCHER AND ROB ROSA SPEAK WITH JOHN ADAMS

Stuart Pitcher & Rob Rosa Innotec Security is a fast-growing electronic security integration business with a strong product spread and a serious commitment to its high-end customer base. Founder and managing director Stuart Pitcher and Director, sales and marketing Rob Rosa speak with SEN editor, John Adams.

JA: Could you outline the Innotec Security business - who are its clients, which brands does it install? SP: Innotec Security is a value-add integration business servicing mid to high end clients such as Powercor, Greater Metropolitan Cemetery Trust, Adidas, NDIA, Victorian Arts Centre and many other clients. Innotec Security are Gallagher certified partners but deal in a wide range of products dependant on client requirements such as Inner Range, Tecom, Milestone, FLIR, Pelco, Panasonic, AXIS, Mobotix, HIK and Dahua. JA: When was it founded, how many staff, bases of operation? SP: I originally founded Innotec at the start of 2015 after 30 years growing other electronic integrations businesses such

The Interview JA: Which areas does Innotec see as being those with greatest growth potential for the future?

HERE IS MY HUMBLE AND HONEST OPINION. STOP TRYING TO CUT CORNERS AND DELIVER SERVICES THAT CAN’T BE DELIVERED. as SNP Security and the former ACG Security. In September 2017, Rob Rosa acquired 50 per cent of Innotec Security – Rob also has over 30 years of experience in a varied range of security roles in the industry such as GM for Pacific Communications (Hills), head of security for Melbourne City Council and CEO of the publicly listed company, Q Security Systems. Innotec Security has been built on the following pillars being relationships from contacts, innovative thinking when it comes to solutions for clients and the fact that Innotec continues to provide a reliable service with the highest level of expertise. The main base is Victoria and also regional Victoria and Innotec Security currently has 11 staff and utilises around 20 sub-contract staff on a full-time basis. All our internal technicians and sub contractors are all fully certified on all the systems and are continually assessed on their skill set and new product/feature training competency. JA: How fast is the company growing and in what areas of business is the growth coming? SP: The company is certainly growing rapidly but we have a very controlled methodology to ensure that we are not taking on too much, too quickly. The areas that we are witnessing significant growth include CCTV and access control, and perimeter protection is significantly playing an important part.

SP: CCTV and access control will continue to grow given the levels of insecurity that many are feeling through terrorism and general crime in their respective areas, but I also feel that analytics, smart technologies and thermal detection will see some significant upward movement in 2018 and beyond. There are some very smart software-driven and cloud-based systems that can be adapted to current technological solutions both from a retrofit or brand new site installation that would add lots of value to the end user in making their systems more robust, more economical in the long run and also give them visibility as to what is working and what is not in a real time environment rather than finding out when you are missing the information while undertaking a forensic exercise. JA: What do end users get from Innotec that is different from other installers and integrators? RR: We try to deliver a premium service but also to ensure the customers feel they are receiving a personalised service and also general visits to say hello and deliver new information on what technology is coming out that may suit them. This does not necessarily mean that we go out and see clients weekly, but we reach out to them via phone, email, face to face, etc. The reality is we are still at the size that we can continue to offer these benefits at no cost to the end user. We can also offer clients our unique customer portal service (CPS) giving them personalised logins, which allows clients to log in service and technical calls, check what status their service calls are at, including project status, invoicing, when a service tech is being dispatched, etc. All this is free of charge and available to all our clients. JA: In your opinion, what are the current challenges in the market? RR: Both Stuart and I have spoken in length about the coming challenges in our industry and many times we come back to the cheap import (grey channel) non-branded security equipment being installed by a number of back yarders (so to speak). This alone hurts the industry, irrespective of where you are aiming to position yourself in the market place. Another challenge is the lack of young incoming techs and security-related

experts. This means that we rely heavily on industry old-timers who may not be across the latest technologies as well as we need them to be. On a serious note it would be nice to see Government facilitating apprenticeship-style work arrangements with our industry. JA: How are you enjoying the integration side of the business, Rob? What’s the core difference between distribution and integration in terms of service provision to customers, in your opinion? RR: I’ve always loved the integration side of the business from my early days at Vangren Technology and since joining the Innotec team I have enjoyed returning to the integration space. As far as differences go, there are a few but your question pertaining to service provision to customers – it’s much the same. As a distributor, clients require you to hold inventory, support pre and post-sales and ensure that if the products have issues again pre or post-warranty, you can provide a resolution of their issues without them being gouged. That’s basic customer service. As far as an integration company, clients expect to have a system provided, installed and commissioned with the proper end user training and minimal to nil disruption and not get gouged for it – that’s basic customer service. Is there much of a difference in the philosophy of service provision to customers? I believe that great customer service at a competitive rate in your given industry is the major key to success. JA: What parts of their own businesses do you think installers and integrators should be focusing on? RR: Here is my humble and honest opinion. Stop trying to cut corners and deliver services that can’t be delivered. Enough with the importation of cheap rubbish products on the internet that do not comply with standards – focus on delivering great customer service at good pricing, keep your clients in the loop with new technology and what is coming up. Keep your staff trained and up to date with upcoming technology and ensure that your business is focussed on delivering a great all-round service that is commensurate with what end users are expecting, and which is aligned with their business requirements. n

SecTech Camera Shootout

SECTECH CAMERA SHOOTOUT CONTENDERS SecTech Camera Shootout, sponsored by CSD and Milestone, includes 26 cameras from 10 manufacturers arranged in 3 groups – external bullet cameras, external dome cameras and PTZs. We’ll be looking at the usual aspects of image quality, as well as checking out some cameras using licence plate and face recognition technology.

AMERA shootouts are a great opportunity to get an overall sense of enhancements across the market, as well as getting an idea of which particular cameras do best in the environments in which you see them. This year, we’re going to look at some bestselling camera groups – external bullets and dome cameras – as well as checking out the performance of PTZ cameras across day into night light ranges over 200-250 metres. The conditions in which we’ll view the cameras will include backlight, lowlight and IR light (we will use an external IR source). The parameters we’ll be paying attention to include motion blur, colour rendition, contrast, sharpness, flare and ghosting, latency, ISO noise and noise suppression

and rebuild artefacts. Motion blur and sharpness together are key when it comes to identifying faces and plates – too much blur and too little sharpness and there’s no chance of court admissible footage. Something else we’ll be doing this year is checking out license plate and face recognition software with our live camera feeds across a range of conditions. The idea here is to get a sense of the possibilities offered by the latest analytics solutions when it comes to applying AI to existing external CCTV cameras in a range of conditions. This year we are using Milestone’s Xprotect Corporate VMS to drive the camera shootout and Imagus to handle analytics. When it comes to display, we’ll be using a 65-inch Sony Bravia X85 4K monitor, Milestone VMS server and workstation, Imagus Analytics, a Gigabit Switch, a Vivotek IR array, the familiar Tavcom Norman target for contrast, sharpness, colour rendition and LPR, and the Rotakin target revolving at 25rpm, which will give us a consistent measure for the key characteristic of motion blur. SecTech Roadshow Camera Shootout is not to be missed – for the first time we’re focusing on high quality external bullets and dome cameras –

SCENES FROM SCENTRE Scentre Group held its annual camera shootout at Westfield Bondi Junction over the past couple of days – it proved a great opportunity to check out the latest cameras in a tough operating environment.

E’RE going to undertake a full report of the shootout, complete with images on a camera by camera basis (Scentre Group permitting), but in the first instance, here are some scenes from the event – nice work from the Scentre Group team and all the engineers involved. The application at Westfield Bondi Junction is a tough one, with huge depths of field, people moving at right angles close to the lens, bright lights and dark backgrounds, intensely lit entrances, reflective floors and plenty more. Also challenging was the test undertaken in the carpark, with cameras required to perform at night and in the presence of very strong backlight, with plenty of moving objects. Generally speaking, this year’s cameras looked to be doing better than those of previous years – improvements tend to be incremental in video surveillance these days. Also important in applications like these is infrastructure, which allows higher bit rates to be used. Something that was interesting at Scentre Group Shootout was a real time voting system that allowed attendees to

W

elect the camera they thought did best in a particular application. Scentre Group’s Simon Pollak was quick to point out that these judgements were a bit like the Packing Room Prize at the Archibald Art Awards but the highly qualified assembly in the Westfield viewing room, like the packers, knew when it liked what it saw. In all the categories, there was a single standout winner - we hope to publish these results next issue, along with our own observations.

Analytics

ANALYTICS: EDGE OF POSSIBILITY

ANALYTICS as a technology seems to be on the brink of a momentous acceleration, the impact of which would be profound. The latest systems don’t simply identify faces, vehicles and other parameters of movement, they can detect gender, clothing, hair colour and facial expressions, too.

IDEO surveillance, for all its capacity to inform security staff of developing events, has limitations. It can only take a proactive role when control room operators are watching footage of a camera viewing an incident in real time. In larger systems, no one has the time to watch hundreds, even thousands of cameras, meaning even the latest IP CCTV systems fill a proactive role of assisting investigators after an incident has taken place. Make no mistake, a digital surveillance system with the latest clever search functions is a joy to use – the ability to flit along a timeline makes searches extremely powerful but it doesn’t make these systems proactive – not in the way they one day could be. What might analytics deliver a security team? It depends on the application, but you’d be thinking about early warning of events that breach programmed thresholds – that leaves a lot of

V

wiggle room if the analytics are discerning enough and the video streams are of sufficient quality. You might detect a known license plate, a known face, a movement against the flow of foot or vehicle traffic, a vehicle where it should not be, a vehicle moving too quickly in a controlled area. With the latest analytics solutions, developers are talking about recognition based on gender, clothing colour, hair colour, age – even mood, though this might be a grey area, particularly on Monday mornings. According to Will Hasna of Bosch Security, we have reached a tipping point when it comes to the application of intelligent video analytics to surveillance solutions “Definitely yes,” he says. “Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL) are buzz words these days, driven by global technology companies like Google, Apple, Intel, etc. “With this trend continuing into the future, consumers will want more intelligent devices and that will influence the development of the security surveillance market as well. The miniaturization of chips and embedding of GPU and VPU inside devices makes the possibility of implementing AI, ML and DL into NVRs and even cameras very possible. That will revolutionise the use of video analytics by taking it to the next level.” Hasna says the most commonly used IVA functionality has always been basic event alerts such as line crossing, object in field, object left/ removed and counting, these are the most common detectors available in the market and these are easily understood by the end user. “However, when it comes to defining the most useful pieces of IVA functionality, each of these detectors used in isolation does not bring much value to the user,” he argues. “The ability to combine multiple types of detectors to customize to the needs of the user is the key factor to successfully utilising IVA for surveillance. “Bosch IVA can combine different combinations of detections in a logic before an event is triggered, as an example, we can classify that an object has to be a car that crosses a particular line in a certain direction before stopping at a particular area for a duration of time and only when all conditions are met will the camera generate an IVA alarm. You can even schedule different IVA profiles (conditions) for the day and use another type of IVA for the night. “One functionality of IVA that is least used but in my opinion is the most important in functionality is the ability to conduct a Forensic Search. In the case of Bosch, we embed IVA metadata generated from the camera into our video recordings, which allows a user to define ad-hoc IVA rules/logic after the fact to search through the recordings. In most applications, the user does not really know what will need to be detected until an incident occurs. “If using the Bosch Video Management System (BVMS) in combination with Bosch cameras, a user can simply select Forensic Search, and

Rob Marsden

WITH THE LATEST ANALYTICS SOLUTIONS, DEVELOPERS ARE TALKING ABOUT RECOGNITION BASED ON GENDER, CLOTHING COLOUR, HAIR COLOUR, AGE – EVEN MOOD...

retrospectively select the following rules as an example, “Cross the line” combined with “Object classified as a car”, that “Matches the colour blue” and is “Travelling in a certain direction” and the BVMS system will return all the relevant matches. This gives the user the ability to search for actionable evidence quickly.” When it comes to the best options between incamera or in-software analytics, Hasna says there’s no best option for every application – both types have pros and cons. “In-camera IVA provides speedy detection with minimum hardware needed to deploy and also helps to reduce bandwidth utilisation as the processing is happening at the edge, however, due to the limitations within the camera CPU, sophisticated algorithms such as facial recognition can’t easily be deployed without the need for additional server support,” he says. “In-software is the opposite of in-camera. It has the CPU processing power to run complex detection, but because of the complexity of the algorithms, generally is only able to support a small number of cameras, requiring more servers to support more cameras. It also means introducing a single point of failure that will effect multiple cameras should the server fail. In my opinion, best practise would be to balance the deployment of in-camera and in-software depending on your needs. Using the in-camera to detect events that need immediate attention and using in-software to complement the in-camera lack of CPU power, such as facial recognition, license plate recognition, etc.” When it comes to the most common applications of IVA, Hasna says that while there’s an increase in interest, analytics is not commonly used and when it is deployed, it’s often used to handle very simple tasks. “The implementation rate in Australia is still relatively low when compared to the number of cameras deployed,” he says. “We see the most common functions being counting, where the user needs to keep a count of how many cars or

Analytics ALL OUR APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY CENTRED AROUND FACIAL RECOGNITION, AS WE ARE FINDING THIS THE MAIN AREA OF USE FOR THE SECURITY INDUSTRY.

Will Hasna

people have passed through certain areas, as well as directional follow to ensure objects are moving through the intended direction. “Bosch is heavily involved in the automotive sector providing many sensor technologies, including video, to vehicle manufacturers and with the heavy investment of these companies into autonomous driving technology to improve their detection systems we can improve the analytic performance of the algorithms in Bosch cameras. “Bosch analytics profiles have been developed over a long period of time and we believe there is no one type of IVA that works best. The accuracy of IVA depends on many factors such as, what a customer is operationally trying to achieve, the scene itself, lighting conditions, or even the number of people moving in the area.” There are pitfalls/limitations when it comes to IVA applications in the real world and Hasna says there are some things integrators and end users should bear in mind. “Contrast between the object and the background is the most important factor,” Hasna argues. “Having a high contrast between the background and the object will increase the detection reliability. The smaller the size of the object the harder for video analytics to detect. As mentioned earlier, cameras have limited CPU power, the number of objects a camera can detect and track simultaneously or how accurately it can detect, depends on how well the algorithm is written and how powerful the CPU in the camera is. “There are a lot of cameras available in the market place claiming to deliver IVA at the edge, but not all are created equal. As an example it is generally easier to have accurate analytics in a controlled indoor environment than when the same camera is placed in an outdoor environment looking at a wide scene. We recommend that integrators/end users perform a proof of concept on the camera they have selected in the environment they would

Fraser Larcombe

like to utilise IVA to evaluate the actual performance is going to meet their expectations.” Is it possible surveillance solutions will become virtually automated – calling in human response only when necessary? Hasna thinks not. “This is unlikely to happen in the near future, AI technology is still in its infant stages – much more time is needed before such automated systems can be deployed safely,” he says. “Currently IVA serves as a virtual security guard watching over a scene 24/7 and alerts to the abnormalities in the scene, which allows a human to make a judgement whether it is a false or real event. The task of IVA currently and in the future is to lighten the load of human response so that security operators can focus on the most important areas in the site.” When it comes to integrating functionality suites such as retail analytics to increase return on investment Hasna believes the answer is yes and no. “Retail analytics only provides a summary of the data gathered from these IOT devices,” he explains. “How the data gathered should be interpreted still depends on the retailer. Most retailers are not experienced or do not have the knowledge to understand such data. Not knowing what those graphs, heat maps or tables mean will not help the retailer improve their sales. “On the other hand, the supplier of retail analytics cannot advise the retailer what should be done to improve the sales, as they are not the domain expert in retail. It’s up to the retailer to utilise the data – for instance, to re-allocate staff in the outlet through the busiest period of the day - this may help the retailer to reduce costs by ensuring there are sufficient staff to keep up with customer demand.” At Imagus, Fraser Larcombe says he doesn’t believe we’ve reached a tipping point when it comes to the application of intelligent video analytics to surveillance solutions, arguing there is much more that analytics can do to help solve customers’ problems in multiple areas of operation. “The most important features of analytics are those that save time or money for the customer - things like line crossing, loitering or object left/removed, VMD, event searches, face recognition, people searches, retail analytics, license plate recognition - all these can provide a great mix of useful functionality, depending on the use case. “All our applications are currently centred around facial recognition, as we are finding this the main area of use for the security industry. We are, however, experiencing an extension of the requirements for facial recognition to include recognising VIP’s or persons of interest, or for facial verification rather

56 se&n

SEM0518_54analytics.indd 56

26/4/18 3:14 pm

than recognition. Another area of great interest with our solution is retrospective and historical search capabilities.” According to Larcombe, some of the pitfalls include camera placement and environmental factors such as lighting, motion and field of view limitations. “Managing customer expectations is key and where most people fail,” he explains. “Some manufacturers promote industry standard benchmark reports as being important in their facial recognition software performance metrics, however, in doing so they can inadvertently promote unrealistic results when used in real world use cases, especially in the surveillance and security industries. “These industry benchmarking standards are usually derived from a controlled testing environment utilizing high-quality image data sets, when this is not representative of real world scenarios. It is important to understand that some reports in the industry are more about verification than recognition. In the security and surveillance industry, recognition is key, not verification.” Larcombe argues that analytics does deliver a return on investment if used correctly. “The idea of retail analytics is a good example here,” he says. “By knowing things like dwell times, movement direction, gender and age, the retail environment can change to suit. This might be to guide more people to an area that’s quiet, or to charge a premium for retail space that’s more utilized.” In-camera or in-software – what’s the best option? “While an in-camera option would be utopia, the graphics chips (GPU) in a camera are not currently capable of working as efficiently as software on a server,” Larcombe explains. “If they were capable, and the cameras could offer shared information on a cross platform basis, then this would be a great leap forward. However, camera manufacturers working together on broad analytics functionality would be very difficult in my opinion, as the camera manufacturers are skewed to the belief that they have all the parts necessary to create a total solution for every customer.” Does Larcombe think that in the future, it’s possible surveillance solutions will become virtually automated? “We would like to think so, but realistically there will always be points where it is best to send some information for clarification to a human.” For Rob Marsden of integration company Addictive Technologies, if anything is holding intelligent video analytics back, it’s user education. “There is still a huge education gap and a lot of work to be done to educate audiences on the massive value that intelligent VA systems can provide for their organisation,” Marsden says. “For any educated end user who has had an intelligent video analytics solution installed for them, you will not be able to

sell them on any system not surpassing their prior experience.” A key aspect of any IVA application is that integrators and end users should always test and optimise for accuracy, Marsden says. “The ability for a system to ‘self-learn’ or be ‘trained’ on any particular IVA is key,” he says. “Beware of the temptation to overpromise or oversell the ability, make sure you know what you’re talking about – such as the difference between facial recognition and facial detection. “Regardless of the IVA functionality – in my opinion all are valuable and should be able to be implemented to work seamlessly together where required – it’s all wasted if the ability to search and use those functions is not well thought out, quick and intuitive for the end user to operate, or if IVA events are not brought to the attention of the operator in a user-friendly manner. According to Marsden, Addictive focuses on deploying systems with IVA as part of the overall security posture of a solution. “The ability to perform alerts on people as opposed to random object movements in a given area is paramount to a basic integrated solution for us,” he says. “We already implement IVA-based systems that can escalate and contact various levels of response based on the event type and severity.” Marsden believes integrating functionality suites such as retail analytics enhances return on investment. “Yes, it does,” he says. “And that’s why I believe the IVA smarts should run at the edge on the camera. IVA will be increasingly common across multisite retail chains. If cameras contain the smarts, then the software can be focused on providing the ultimate viewing, searching and reporting operator experience.” n

5G Gathers Momentum THE push towards 5G is gathering momentum, with Telstra switching on 5G-enabled public hotpots on the Gold Coast not long after Spark NZ conducted New Zealand’s first 5G mobile test in Wellington. 5G delivers lightning fast download and upload speeds that will change the way information is exchanged, facilitating video as the super sensor.

ELSTRA’S hotspots are at Southport’s Scarborough and Nerang Streets and employ 5G backhaul and infrastructure at the exchange to a standard Wi-Fi point to ensure 5G can be accessed on existing devices to give download speeds higher than 3Gbps. According to Telstra’s group managing director networks, Mike Wright, the telco intends to roll out 5G services widely in 2019. “This shows how quickly the technology is evolving,” Wright said. “At the start of the year our 5G prototype device was the size of a bar fridge and weighed more than 200 kilograms. Now, in collaboration with Intel and Ericsson, that has been shrunk down to the size of a personal computer and can be installed in a car.” Meanwhile, NZ Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media, Clare Curran, became the first member of the public to run a 5G speed test achieving speeds of over 9 Gigabits per second in Wellington – the speed was 90x faster than Fast Ethernet’s 100Mbps and 100x faster than 4G wireless. Spark’s managing director Simon Moutter said Spark is now moving 5G from a concept to reality. “Spark is very excited to be leading the

T

5G race with this trial, and we intend to be at the forefront of deploying this technology in New Zealand once the required spectrum is made available,” Moutter said. “We want to be ahead of the pack in preparing for it, testing it, in deploying it, and we want to be the partner of choice for those New Zealand businesses starting to think about its uses in their industry. We’ve fast-tracked our plans and are committed to creating a 5G Lab in Auckland later this year, where customers can work with us. “Many people have now heard of concepts like self-driving cars, smart cities, virtual and augmented reality. Unleashing the full potential of these concepts will require a faster wireless network with a super-fast response time,” Moutter explained. “5G will deliver significantly faster speeds and more capacity than previous mobile technology, and will support the connectivity of multiple devices with very low response times. It will take us from a world of connecting people to each other and the internet, to a world of connecting almost everything.” 5G networks will give consumers a better mobile experience in more locations. Increased network capacity will support more users, even in crowded

areas, such as large public events, and at peak times. Faster network speeds will also enable consumers to view rich content in more places, supporting the streaming of live events and high-resolution media. As 5G networks mature, they will support the widespread and dense deployment of sensors and other network-connected devices by significantly reducing their power requirements and providing flexible coverage across different spectrum bands. There’s significant development elsewhere, too. AT&T reports that it will roll out a 5G network in a dozen U.S. markets, based

on newly released standards by the international wireless standards body 3GPP, by the end of 2018. “5G will change the way we live, work and enjoy entertainment,” said Melissa Arnoldi, president, AT&T Technology and Operations. “We’re moving quickly to begin deploying mobile 5G this year and start unlocking the future of connectivity for consumers and businesses. With faster speeds and ultra-low latency, 5G will ultimately deliver and enhance experiences like virtual reality, future driverless cars, immersive 4K video and more.” This proliferation of the Internet of

Things (IoT) across industries is expected to produce significant productivity benefits and support integration between sectors as part of massive machine type communications (mMTC). When it comes to critical communications, low latency and ultra-reliable communications networks will support the delivery of critical communications, to support public safety use and playing role in the technology ecosystem supporting autonomous vehicles. In addition to automation, critical communications will also help to support technological advancement in areas including robotics and artificial intelligence – that’s likely to

include electronic security applications. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has developed draft technical specifications for 5G which include but are not limited to: l High data rates (1 Gbps for hotspots, 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload for wide-area coverage) l Massive connectivity (1 million connections per square kilometre) l Ultra-low latency (1 millisecond) l High reliability (99.999 per cent for mission critical ultra-reliable communications), and l Mobility at high speeds (up to 500 km/h). n

HIK 6MP UNLOCKED! l HIKVISION unlocks 6MP (3072 x 2048 pixel) resolution on its professional network cameras, also known as the 2-line Easy IP 3.0 range. Previously limited to 5MP (2944 x 1656 pixels) by firmware, despite having a built-in native 6MP image sensor, HIK has now set the defaults for 6MP. With firmware optimisation the chipset can process more pixels more efficiently, which has released even higher resolution for the same price. Powered by H.265 or H.265+ compression standards means that there is no significant increase in storage requirement at 6MP. This feature update comes at no extra cost, the model numbers remain the same and the cameras provide better clarity whilst delivering reliable 24/7 video surveillance. Help desk ■ Below are the approximate recommendations for rest times (complete rest, that is) between sets according to your goal, per the National Streng th and Conditioning Association (NSCA). *Note that since fat loss depends primarily on diet, there is no official rest-period prescription for it, although we feel that both short and long rests work, depending on the program.

Q: We take on quite a few jobs from other installers that have unusual wiring schemes. Inheriting a system that has no wiring plan is bad enough but is worse when single colour multistranded cables are used. We find this in intercoms, as well as some bigger alarm panels. What’s the simplest way to find something like a short in an installation like this? A: Coloured multi-strands that are tagged at the panel end are best, but this is time consuming and many techs don’t bother. To solve the mysteries of multi-strands, build a test meter that allows you to identify which wire is what. To do this, buy a 9V battery and a connection strip, then solder a pair of test leads to the strip – it’s easiest if the leads have alligator clips on them. Now put a bulb in series with one of the leads. Have your voltmeter and a bunch of wire tags. Conduct the test with another tech to help you, with you at one end of the disconnected cable with the test meter and the other tech at the far end of the cable with the voltmeter. First, connect the test clips at your end with any 2 wire ends protruding from the cable. Mark the negative wire as A and the positive wire as B. At the far of the cable the other tech starts checking all the possible pairs of wires looking for a voltage. It’s a fiddle but as long as the wires represent a complete circuit the tech will soon find the right combination which can then be marked A and B.

Our panel of experts answers your questions.

Once the tech has communicated the fact they’ve found the right pair of wires, you leave the negative wire connected to A and move the positive wire to another wire end which you mark C. The other tech then searches for voltage on the remaining wires and so on. This method makes it easy to find a short because the test meter light will activate the instant it’s connected to a shorted cable strand. Q: We’re installing a 4-input surveillance system and a 2-door access control and alarm panel inside a shed remote site with 3G connection. Trouble is there’s no power to the site. Do you think a 12V solar system and an inverter would be sufficient to manage such an application? We’re thinking we might be able to build such a simple system ourselves. Any thoughts on cost? A: You could build a small and relatively robust solar system yourselves, but the client will need to understand that the solar system will cost more than the security system. The first thing you’ll need to establish is the current draw and go from there. An NVR, 4 cameras, 3G router and a staged regulator will draw less than 2.5A per hour typically, which is an overall draw of 60 AH per day.

As a baseline, you need a solar array that can generate more than 60A every day, preferably more. And you’ll need a battery that can store then deliver that current without drawing the battery down much past 70 per cent of total capacity. A couple of Solawatt 160 watt (9A per panel) solar panels would more than do the job and cost around $600. This system would exceed your capacity in ideal conditions, even when delivering a total of 20A during daylight hours to support the security equipment. You’d probably want one battery with a 200AH capacity – as you’re installing the system inside, you’ll want AGM batteries to ensure no spilling or venting. A 200AH AGM battery would be more than $1000 for something mil-spec like a Lifeline, or around $500 for something more affordable, such as a Fullriver or a Giant. You’ll need a multi-stage regulator – something like a Sunsaver 20L would be right for a system this size – they cost about $180. If you want a monitor in the circuit and to be able to sync the regulator, you’ll need a Xantrex LinkLite – another $300. This system will deliver 12V, so you’ll need an inverter – something like an Aepro 300W would be enough – another couple of hundred. A system like this would be over-

corrosion and introduce resistance to a circuit. It’s common to see a poor job made of cable conduit in exposed applications – the conduit might be non-UV stabilised stuff designed for internal domestic applications, or the conduit might be installed with an open end facing skywards one inch to the left of field devices. It’s up to techs to make sure they install equipment properly, taking their time, using conduit caps, quality sealants and avoiding the use of metals prone to galvanic corrosion.

NOT MANY CAMERA BRANDS USE UNIFORM SIGNAL PROCESSING ACROSS THEIR RANGES – AXIS COMMUNICATIONS IS ONE THAT DOES SO – WHEN YOU’RE FAMILIAR WITH THEM, IT’S POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY THEIR DISTINCT LOOK ON A MONITOR.

speced in ideal conditions and could also run LED lighting, a fan, a 12V Waeco fridge, as well as charging devices when techs or other staff were on the site. We’d be building the system in our own backyard and running it for an extended period in a range of weather conditions before taking it anywhere. You may find a succession of cloudy days takes you closer to the battery’s harmful discharge point than you should go. An AGM battery of high quality can be discharged below 50 per cent but if this happens too often, battery life will be drastically reduced. Given the demands of this system and its strong generation capacity, the first thing we’d add in that case would be AH. Q: We use a range of camera brands and we find they have highly variable performance vectors when it comes to things like colour rendition, saturation, WDR and more. Why are all these cameras so different? A: When you think of the variables seen with a handful of consumer DSLR cameras – within ranges as well as across brands, it’s easier to understand the vagaries of

surveillance camera engines. As well as different sensors, most manufacturers use different methods of signal processing – these are modifiable to a point in camera settings, but the underlying processing will always remain. Not many camera brands use uniform signal processing across their ranges – Axis Communications is one that seems to do so – when you’re familiar with Axis cameras it’s possible to identify their distinct look on a monitor. Q: When installing access control readers in tough external environments, what are the rules of thumb? A: Buy quality potted IP-65 to IP-67-rated readers and install them from end to end with the same rating in mind. That means making sure the cable, its connectors and field terminations are resistant to weather as well. Try to install readers with some protection from rain and sun. Common sense plays a part. A small hood above a reader will make a big difference to the reader’s longevity, drip loops will help cables shed water rather than accumulate it where it can cause

Q: What should we think about when planning lighting solutions for surveillance applications – we’re looking to protect a vehicle storage facility which has some perimeter lighting, but we need more coverage. A: When designing lighting solutions for surveillance installations make sure you choose lights that have some sort of directional control. Don’t make the mistake of buying lamps that have a fixed position - you want 15-20 degrees adjustment in 2 planes. Nor do you want to backlight mobile objects in a manner that could cause glare issues for other cameras if those objects were moved. Try to keep lights well away from reflective surfaces at close ranges, install them spread apart at equal distances and use luminaries of the same type and strength. Using fewer wider-angle beams may be better than employing larger numbers of weaker lights that illuminate many small bright spots in large dark areas. If there’s nothing you can do about light sources blinding cameras, look at cameras with improved dynamic ranges. Lighting position is important, too. For instance, a light installed above a camera with a similar angle of view can’t cause flare or blooming. Another option is to use the existing lights on the perimeter for ID and in-camera IR across the open ground of the facility. n
