Dear Readers, Greetings from SecurityLink INDIA! End-user security requirements vary and are attributable to an assortment of dynamics – both conventional as well as distinctive. An item designed on an amply intelligent flow chart can yield an accomplished solution, and if not, what will ensue is a wide gap between demand and supply. A similar lack of correspondence in the system was signified by a high ranking police official at a recently held conference in Mumbai. He appealed to entrepreneurs to exert primarily to put together the statistics of basic wants of users and, in accordance with them, to conceptualize a compatible solution. On a comparable note, an investigation turns out well only with ample knowledge of laws and their judicious employment. During his valedictory address at the 1st National Conference of Investigating Agencies, Shri U.U. Lalit, Justice of Supreme Court of India, stressed on the pertinence of the adequate knowledge of laws and their appropriate use during investigations, emphasizing the need for coordination between various investigation agencies and prosecution wings to improve the quality of investigation. The Government appears to be sternly addressing new security challenges to National Security and is accentuating Private-Public Partnerships that boost adopting the latest hi-tech equipment for the security forces. They have endorsed Modernization Plan–II for the period 2012 to 2017 that sanctions all the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to equip themselves with more and latest arms, ammunition, and special gadgets of advanced versions such as night vision devices, deep search metal detectors, BP jackets and helmets, hand held search lights and global positioning systems etc. The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has recently reviewed the progress of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and National Emergency Response System (NERS) and shown satisfaction. The CCTNS project aims at providing pan India search on a national database of crime and criminal records, and integrating all pillars of the criminal justice system, namely police, courts, prisons, fingerprints, forensics and prosecution, for informed and fast decision making. September is a busy month with us participating in TrafficInfraTech Expo in Mumbai, IFSEC SEA in Malaysia, and IISE at New Delhi. We will bring you updates from these exhibitions next month. Till then, wish you happy reading, and stay safe! With warm regards,

ikvision’s LED backlighting allows for a slim, sleek design. LED monitors are much thinner and lighter than LCD monitors because LED monitors do not use fluorescent bulbs, so they also take up less space.

ED monitors from Hikvision feature more intensity gradation and a larger light wavelength than LCD monitors, delivering true, lifelike colors with better gradation.

NETGEAR Sets New Performance Standard for Networked Attached Storage with Ready NAS 212 and 214 Offers real-time transcoding capability on a quad-core ARM platform

ETGEAR®, Inc has launched its ReadyNAS® 210 Series of worldclass Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices for home and home office networks with new two-and four-bay models in India. Based on a quad-core 1.4GHz ARM Cortex processor,ReadyNAS 212 (RN212) (www.netgear.com/ReadyNAS212) and ReadyNAS 214 (RN214) (www.netgear.com/ ReadyNAS214) set a new standard for consumer NAS by delivering real-time 1080p highdefinition video transcoding so you can view your HD content on any screen, anywhere at home and over the Internet. Edimax offers True Deployment Flexibility with New GS-5424PLG Web Smart PoE+ Switch IP networking leader expands industrial Ethernet POE+ switch portfolio

E

dimax Technology, a leading provider of premier networking solutions, has launched GS-5424PLG Web Smart PoE switch. With its Powerover-Ethernet capabilities (PoE), GS5424PLG supports twenty-four Gigabit Ethernet ports and four mini-GBIC/ SFP slots. Designed for medium to large network environments, its standard 19inch 1U rack-mount brackets allow for integration with the most widely used mounting systems in the market. According to a recent research by IDC, the size of the Indian Ethernet switch market increased 12.3% to $112.6 million in Q1 2016. Increased adoption of SMAC technologies drove demand for L3 switches across organizations in Q1 2016. Telecom, banking and education sectors witnessed significant growth of about 20 percent and contributed close to 60 percent of the overall market. Increasing number of internet users across tier II & tier III cities, rising penetration of 3G/4G technology

and decline in average selling price of IoT devices have led to higher growth of Ethernet switches in the Indian market. Additionally, push from Govt of India by initiatives such as eGov & Digital India has increased demand for network infrastructure investments across IT and corporate sector. “The GS-5424PLG is a superb choice for IT managers or SIs looking for futureproof solutions to their PoE networks. It raises the bar by offering flexible PoE budgeting and supplies up to 30W power of electricity per port and has a total power supply of 400W,” said Sanjay Joshi, Country Manager at Edimax Technology, “Users need not waste money on electrical wiring or new power outlets. effective solution for network environments where power outlets are difficult to access or make entire installation managed centrally through PoE switch.” 24 PoE ports supplies up to 30W of electricity per port and has a total power supply of 400W to power any IEEE 802.3at/af compliant power device. The PoE detection capability enables GS-

5424PLG to verify whether the connected device is IEEE 802.3at compliant or 802.3af compliant and in absence of PoE device, network data will be transmitted through the LAN cables. PoE technology enables the Ethernet cable to carry both data and power, thus reducing cable installation and eliminating the need for extension cords or electrical outlets

on the walls and ceiling. Further, it also features an innovative power-budget UI which allows IT managers to monitor entire PoE network, set up VLANs to segregate traffic, configure link aggregation settings to create fat traffic pipelines and assess the total power usage before adding new PoE devices to the network architecture.

SecurityLink INDIA: How do you see the the market in India today and where is it heading? VK: There are a few trends that have emerged in the access control domain like the move to mobility, the convergence of physical and logical access, the increased use of biometrics and the shift towards IP based access control systems. The emergence of Near Field Communications (NFC) and other technologies is fuelling the migration of access control technology to mobile platforms. cess control methodology we've used for decades can now be embedded into NFC-enabled smartphones and other mobile devices, and we can now use our phones virtually anywhere we need to unlock a door, gate, or drawer. This capability is built into next-generation access platforms such as HID Global’s iCLASS SE® platform that is based on its Secure Identity Object™ (SIO) model, a standards-based, technologyindependent data structure. Physical and logical access convergence improves security by enabling a single smart card to support multiple authentication methods while helping organizations meet regulatory requirements, enforce consistent policies, and drive consolidated audit logs throughout the enterprise, and cut cost by consolidating tasks. For instance, physical access credentials can be re-used for logical access including strong desktop authentication. Conversely, logical access credentials can help drive more robust identity authentication at the door. Biometrics identification today is not merely referring to fingerprint identification, but also other biometric applications like face recognition, palm reading and iris identification. To address the advancement of IP based access controllers HID Global has introduced the open architecture IP-based access controllers, VertX® and EDGE™ few years back. We would be further enhancing the product features later this year. They are fully-functional and easy-to-use IP-based access control solutions which bring intelligence to the door and enable a wide variety of solution deployments, including remote management and report generation via standard Web browsers, in-house enterprise solutions, hosted solutions and more. 35

SecurityLink INDIA: What are the USPs of the HID products and solutions especially for India? VK: HID Global’s mobility solutions are powered by the company’s award-winning Seos® technology, which adds trust to identities, so users can confidently embrace and use new applications that simplify and enrich their lives. HID Mobile Access enables the issuance, delivery and revocation of digital keys on mobile devices to open doors. No matter what the technology, mobile devices offer an unparalleled way to change the way we open doors. However, security administrators and IT directors will need to review which mobile-related technologies will allow them to best engage with their employees to create the optimal access experience on their premises. Supported by Bluetooth Smart and NFC, the solution merges security with convenience by storing secure identities on smartphones for opening doors and gates. This powerful solution enables Android or iOS phones to communicate with readers using a close-range ‘Tap’ mode, or from a distance with HID Global’s patented ‘Twist and Go’ mode. With solutions powered by Seos, customers have the potential to use any combination of smart phones, smart cards, tablets, wearables, bank cards, key fobs, inlays and other smart devices to secure more applications than ever before.

SecurityLink INDIA: What is your current go-to-market strategy and how do you select your partners and SIs? WJL: We have partners who have been in this industry for the last 15 years; they are adapting to the new technologies. They are also benefiting. There are IT partners in physical security, and also 36

core physical security partners in the IT side of security. This is because the customer feels that the IT department is important but is more concerned with the physical access control. So while he wants a specialized security partner, he also wants to build a specialized IT infrastructure to cater to that. This co-working will define the applications in new digital India. Every channel partner also understands that, so they are accrediting themselves to meet that requirement.

SecurityLink INDIA: What is your take on the current government’s mood and move towards growth and development of industry, especially the Security industry? WJL: We expect tremendous growth over the next 5 years, and government initiatives like Digital India will create a big impact on the demand for Smart cards and in turn card printers. The demand for desktop ID card printers is growing in India and neighbouring countries like Bangladesh.

SecurityLink INDIA: How do you differentiate between working with the government vis-à-vis the private sector? VK: The government’s efforts to modernize the country fuel the growth of the access control industry. The e-governance initiatives to make the technological and application benefits available to all citizens stimulate the smart cards market while opening up numerous applications, including the nationwide health card project – Rashtriya Swastya Bima Yojana (RSBY) and Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS). State governments have also played their role by collaborating with Central Association of Private Security Industry to set up SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

training centres for security guards, with the aim of raising the security standards across the nation. On the other hand, second-tier and third-tier cities lack awareness around security and slow technological development which slow the adoption of advanced access control systems. Many enterprises are still using legacy access control systems or basic security measures such as keys and locks, security gates and guards for high security areas. Therefore, it is critical for the region to set up a local distributor and system integrator network for pre-sales and technical support, while providing local technicians with adequate product training to support the growth of these cities.

SecurityLink INDIA: India has diversified market in terms of cost of the project. What is your strategy to cater this long stretch of demands from high-end to low end implementations? WJL: HID Global has been present in the Indian market since late 90s. In fact, when it comes to ID cards, we are the pioneers in secure and trusted identity solutions. We have an India office with local incorporation and have a business development team to take care of the market needs in India. We operate through a network of channel partners to reach our prospective customers. First of all, India is a huge country and geographically, it is at a great advantage. Our printers look like a desktop which can be put anywhere. We are focused on the decent prized system. Although everybody prefers a low cost printer, we believe that this is a transition period where the government and corporate are issuing various kinds of cut. The next stage of the demand would be, how to make sure the cut belongs to you and

this is where we can share our experience and our knowledge to provide high security ID cards. 20 years ago, the US green card was created by HID Global and they are working with us even today. Everybody tries to hack the US green card but the reason why US government has been using HID for 20 years is because they have never had a bad experience with our security features.

SecurityLink INDIA: How do 100 smart cities projects impact HID India? VK: We do have a large role to play in the Smart Cities culture and our partners also have a presence. Smart city starts with smart building and mobile access would be the key requirement going forward. A smart city doesn’t only need to be Wi-Fi connected or have a network, but it also needs to have an access control, CCTV, and various other access and security applications in place. Identity management will help a building become smart and these buildings then become part of a greater smart city. So, in a way we have a greater play in the smart cities initiative because of smart building access systems we build. Today everyone is worried about security identification, which would be for security reason or analysis. So almost all buildings today are access controlled, whether through a biometric play or in other ways.

SecurityLink INDIA: What are the major concerns that you consider can hinder the company’s progress in India? VK: Slow adoption of technology is one of the biggest challenges we see across verticals. The challenge in a developing market like India is twofold: one of the issues is evangelizing and

promoting technology solutions in nascent marketplaces with channels which aren’t very well-developed, but certainly desire to move forward quickly. Secondly, there are no standards that govern security which challenges the deployment of appropriate and relevant technology into the market place. Despite these challenges, India continues to present tremendous growth opportunities. With our proven expertise in delivering secure identity solutions, we have been able to leverage this growth through various engagements in these countries over the last few years. There are a number of different areas of our business that have been very successful throughout Asia Pacific, which indicates the vast number of great opportunities to come. In some sectors, CISOs understand the need for the technology but they don’t want to get out of their comfort zone (already existing infrastructure). Their existing system is running smoothly and meeting their requirement, so they don’t feel the need to invest more. That’s why we have tried to help them understand that this new technology is one of the strongest security applications, but many CISOs still have doubts, and that’s where I see a challenge. But the biggest challenge of all is, low cost products coming into the market from the unorganized segment. While they don’t have much presence across the enterprise segment, being at the low end of a very unorganized segment, it is a challenge in the market. Also, what may be the biggest overall industry challenge is the prevailing attitudes about access control. Industry education is often required in order to encourage adherence to best practices. Reliance on legacy infrastructure, technology and mindsets will make it hard for organizations to keep up with SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

today’s technology advances that address a world of increasingly sophisticated threats. For instance, if the market continues to delay shoring up its best practices now against today’s threats to traditional cards and readers, it will be difficult for enterprise infrastructures to seamlessly move to digital credentials carried on smartphones in a BYOD deployment environment with new and different security threats. But more than these challenges, I can say with the new initiatives like Smart Cities, and the kind of technology adoption that companies are taking, the challenges are being met in the proper way. WJL: GoID Data stored in a mobile device is encrypted in a container. As such it cannot be transferred from the device to another. Obviously if the device is unlocked and not protected by the user (in the same way as any other data on the phone) then that information is exposed in the same way. The encryption around the software deployed prevents breach of security either by direct attack or by interception or other means, even if the phone is rooted. If a phone is stolen the identity can be revoked remotely as soon as the phone is connected to a network. HID Global ensures that all transactions related to issuing, managing and presenting credentials using mobile phones are conducted in a highly secure, closed-circuit environment protected by end-to-end encryption. We have proven this technology in mobile credentialing for access control across numerous markets. Now, we are extending our success to citizen mobile IDs, becoming the first company to enable instant over-the-air provisioning and streamlined access to cloud-based government information services – all with the assurance that all transactions are secure and trustworthy. 37

Delta’s HD2055 Barrier Passes 1,000,000 Cycles Test D

elta Scientific’s HD2055 barrier which will stop a 15,000 pound vehicle traveling 50 mph (80 kpm) has just met the criteria of the United States Department of State for continuous operations of 1 million cycles. The HD2055 was tested from February 2016 through July 2016, outside, exposed to full sunlight and the effects of climatic conditions. Cycle rate on the barrier was four per minute. “This is another example of why

vehicle access control buyers need to check for certified equipment,” emphasizes Greg Hamm, Delta Scientific Vice President, Sales and Marketing, “Security professionals that must protect their perimeters from terrorists and errant drivers must have the confidence that their barriers will perform their functions each and every time.” According to the report by the independent test facility, “The barrier system was found to be capable of 1,000,000 continuous operations without failure of any component necessary for continued barrier operation outside of scheduled maintenance.” Upon impact, the barrier remains in its foundation and the opening stays blocked, providing a multiple hit capability. In its M50 crash test, the HD2055 completely disabled the test vehicle, caus-

ing severe damage to the occupant department and power train. The maximum penetration recorded was less than zero. The P1 penetration rating was given because the penetration beyond the protected side of the barrier was less than 1.0 m at the lower leading edge of the test vehicle's cargo bed. With its 24-inch (61 cm) shallow foundation and aesthetic design, the HD2055 obviates the concerns of interference with buried pipes, power lines and fiber optic communication lines. The shallow foundation also reduces installation complexity, time, materials and corresponding costs. The HD2055 is perfect for high water table locations and areas with corrosive soils. It provides low maintenance as all components are accessible from the sides or top of the barrier. For increased security, the HD2055 leverages Delta's proprietary counterbalanced technology to provide a 1.5 second emergency fast operation (EFO), responding to attacks very quickly.

LEDs Fuel Ultra Accurate Indoor GPS System A

N INDOOR positioning system that uses LED lighting to pinpoint location is being developed for use in the retail industry. Researchers from the University of South Australia have developed a ‘GPS like’ indoor positioning system that tracks movement with greater accuracy than contemporary RFID and Wi-Fi based systems. Developer Siu Wai Ho said LiPo used the light from energy efficient LED bulbs to triangulate a person’s location within a building. He said other methods of indoor positioning such as Wi-Fi were only accurate to within 1-2 metres and were easily hampered by radio frequencies from nearby devices, power sources or other wireless electronics. “Our system is more accurate with an error margin of 10cm and unlike some positioning systems our algorithm can calculate the orientation at the same

time,” Ho said. LiPo uses LED lights as transmitters and photodetectors as receivers because they are both common items in modern societies. Photodetectors are a key component for capturing light and are also commonly found in smart phone cameras. The system uses a specially designed receiver (right) to measure light intensity that is able to calculate position and orientation. Dr Ho said although it currently required a unique receiver, he hoped to integrate the technology with the photodectors in mobile phones. He said the system would be ideal for supermarkets because it allowed them to provide customers with relevant information about items nearby. “They can use the system to put advertisements to the users depending on their location,” Ho said, “If you are in a supermarket you want to see some information for a product in front of you. One or two metres of error is still too big because it maybe gives you a product you are not in front of. Our orientation is very accurate and robust – within five degrees of error. It doesn’t depend so much on environmental changes.” LiPo’s unique algorithm removes the need for a server to control the LED lights, which would store and track a user’s movements. It uses a closed form solution, allowing it to calculate the light intensity in 0.01 seconds. 45

Ho said there were many more applications for the technology such as the identification of objects or machinery in factories, movement aid tools for the elderly and trackers for museums to provide relevant information to tourists as they passed by exhibits.

“An indoor positioning system has so many potential applications that still can’t be imagined but only after you build the system you can come up with more applications out of it,” he said. “At this moment we have developed a prototype of the system. We are con-

tacting different industries and some of them have seen our demonstration before – we are still discussing how we can collaborate and commercialise. “Our plan is to have the product ready in 2017 but we are still negotiating,” Ho added.

How Law Enforcement Can Combat the Unseen Costs of Video Storage By Wayne Arvindson – Vice President,Video Surveillance Solutions, Quantum

L

aw enforcement agencies continue to expand their use of body-worn cameras (BWCs) to meet public demand for greater accountability and transparency in police operations. While BWCs may address those problems, they also give rise to another: How can agencies manage the mammoth volume of video files they produce? Storing all that video is way past what most local police agencies have in-house – and paying for additional storage on someone else’s server is expensive. BWC video is just the latest addition to the volume of digital evidence used in police operations and investigations. Law enforcement agencies are already coping with managing video from vehicle-mounted recorders and interview

rooms, still-camera images, and audio recordings of wiretaps and interviews. Gigabytes (GB) of files quickly grow to become terabytes (TB) and petabytes (PB), and the growing volume of data exceeds the capacities of most in-house data stores. The problem is aggravated by the lack of dedicated IT staff in most police agencies. There are over 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States, and 73 percent of these agencies have fewer than 25 sworn personnel. Small operations like this do not have an IT staff to help them manage large data volumes. They are dependent on the people they have on staff – and most of them have minimal technical expertise.

The unseen costs of video storage

T

he unseen costs of video storage When adopting a BWC program, many may view the upfront price as the major implementation cost. BWCs designed for the hazards law enforcement officers encounter each day typically cost from $700 to $1,500 each, depending on the manufacturer and features. The cost of video data storage is less evident. Most BWC vendors offer some

type of data management solution with their hardware, consisting of a ‘frontend’ indexing and retrieval software package, plus an allotment of online storage space for the video. These data management plans are usually priced on a per-camera or per-user basis, providing a few gigabytes of storage space. With half an hour of video coming in at around 800MB and officers producing four hours of video per day – a single officer might generate a terabyte of video per year. This far exceeds the allocation most vendors provide without a surcharge. 51

It’s possible to purchase storage for all the video an agency produces, but it comes with a high price tag. One such plan offers unlimited storage for $1,000 per year per officer. An agency with 1,500 sworn officers would spend $3 million in storage costs alone over two years. Data storage costs can derail a BWC program: ● The Baltimore Police Department, suffering from a dearth of public trust and multiple episodes of police brutality claims, saw a BWC program as a positive step in rebuilding its image. Even so, when the mayor saw that video storage alone would cost the city $2.6 million per year, she vetoed the program. ● The San Diego Police Department paid $267,000 for 1,000 cameras, plus another $3.6 million for storage, maintenance contracts, and other program expenses.

to keep the video before it can be deleted to free up space for other files? ‘Forever’ might be a desirable policy, but that would mean multiplying storage costs every year as the archive grows. Some states mandate the time law enforcement agencies have to maintain records, but most leave it up to the individual department to determine its own policy. Retention policies are based on the

Managing a storage system with different retention policies is an ongoing, dynamic process. New files are added constantly, and aged files that can be purged under the retention policy need to be removed to make room ● The Duluth Police Department spent just $5,000 for cameras, but $78,000 for data storage. ● The Los Angeles Police Department’s BWC program was postponed when City Hall saw the price tag – $57.6 million over five years.

How retention policy affects storage costs

A

major factor affecting storage costs is the agency’s retention policy. How long does the department have 52

predicted need to access the files. Video files documenting traffic stops or field interviews, where no enforcement action is taken, might be retained for 30 days if there is no complaint or other complication that involves them. Recordings of misdemeanor arrests could be kept for two years, or until the case is fully disposed of, with felony cases retained longer. A video with evidence in a major felony case or one that was subject to civil litigation might be retained indefinitely. As each case ages, the need SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

CMYK

to have immediate access to the video typically decreases, so it is acceptable to have a delay of a few minutes before the file is available. Managing a storage system with different retention policies is an ongoing, dynamic process. New files are added constantly, and aged files that can be purged under the retention policy need to be removed to make room. This means one or more full-time staff members are needed for IT duties to keep the storage volume from being overwhelmed. Poor storage management gives rise to the day when there is no room on the server to upload video from that day’s patrols, or the deletion of a file critical to a major case.

Storage: What are the options? Option 1: On-premise storage

T

he simplest and most obvious storage solution is for agencies to maintain their video archives on-site, as most do with paper reports and other hardcopy records. In practice, this doesn’t work very well for most police forces. For a few thousand dollars, an agency can purchase a network-attached storage (NAS) box, stuffed with multi-

CMYK

white paper

ple spinning hard disks in a redundant array of independent disks (RAID) that appears as a single drive to a connected computer. Depending on how the RAID is configured, this can even provide for on-site backup to guard against the problem of a deleted or corrupted file. In practice, this solution quickly becomes problematic: ● An agency of only 10 officers might generate 10TB of data per year from BWCs alone, exceeding the capacity of many storage systems. ● Video from interview rooms, patrol car cameras, security camera ouput, and other miscellaneous digital evidence aggravates the storage and management problem. ● Without some tricky workarounds, Windows (the most common operating system used in business) will not recognize drive volumes larger than 2TB. This means having to index and track files on multiple drive letters. ● The complexity of security settings leaves the agency open to having files deleted or edited without authorization. ● The NAS box increases the risk of a single point of failure. If that device is damaged or stolen, it takes the entire archive with it. It is critical to have an off-site backup to protect data.

Option 2: Cloud storage

O

nline or ‘cloud’ storage is the most common storage medium, as few agencies want to invest the time, money, and training to construct their own on-site storage networks. The solution offered by most BWC vendors is 100 percent online, with the vendors reselling storage space purchased from a major data store like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft. An agency that uses a vendor’s video storage plan is locked in for the duration of the contract. If they decide to change vendors later, it may be difficult to transfer data from one storehouse to another, potentially forcing the agency to maintain two storage contracts to ensure access to their video data. If the agency changes storage providers, the metadata scheme may be corrupted or lost, making the video difficult to catalog and index. In this case, metadata would include key information such as time and date, geographic coordinates, officers’ names and identifiers, and any case information that had been coded into the file. Agencies tied to a single provider run the risk of being at the SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

provider’s mercy if their storage fees rise in the future. Of course, agencies can contract directly with AWS or another data store and eliminate the middleman, but that usually requires a technically skilled IT person to manage the storage.

Online or ‘cloud’ storage is the most common storage medium, as few agencies want to invest the time, money, and training to construct their own on-site storage networks Both approaches to online storage come with a large bandwidth requirement. The agency will be constantly uploading new video files to the cloud and retrieving existing files to prepare reports and investigations. Many small agencies’ Internet access is not any better than what is available in the commu53

CMYK

nities they serve. That kind of volume can overtax the Internet service provider’s network and/ or result in excess data surcharges billed to the department. Even when there is adequate bandwidth to handle an online-only storage strategy, the system is disabled when there is a failure of the data network. Public safety agencies in New Jersey suffered several such outages in 2015 when the Verizon network failed during a storm – isolating numerous offices from the data they required to conduct business. Another data storage strategy uses a combination of local and online storage, balanced for the greatest possible efficiency. This is referred to as a multi-tier approach.

Option 3: Multi-tier storage

A

multi-tier storage system combines different types of storage media, placing the most critical, high-priority data on the highest-speed devices and relegating files of lower immediate importance to slower devices that have a lower per-megabyte storage cost. These devices include: ● Solid-state disk (SSD), a store of memory chips with no moving parts. Access to data on these devices is very fast, but at a relatively high permegabyte cost. ● Spinning hard drives, each with a capacity of up to several terabytes. ● File-based tape, which offers a much

The result is faster, cheaper, more reliable access to video and other digital data without the need for a dedicated IT staff... 54

lower per-megabyte cost, but takes slightly longer to retrieve data compared to SSD or high-capacity disk. ● Cloud storage, used for disasterproof backups, may also be used for long-term retention. Software automatically manages and balances the different storage devices, placing files likely to be needed immediately on the faster media. As the files and the cases associated with them age, they are not accessed as often. This allows them to be moved to lower cost, higher capacity media, where they can still be retrieved in under two minutes. A multi-tier storage approach may rely partially on a wide-area network connection for online storage, but only for backup copies and the lowest-priority files. A temporary service outage will not disable the system, as is the case when cloud storage is the primary medium.

Real-world solution

W

hen the Calgary Police Service (CPS) launched their BWC program, they realized their IT infrastructure would be quickly overwhelmed by the volume of video files generated by the cameras. The cameras were churning out 18.4GB of video per shift – and it wouldn’t be long before the IT department would have to manage over a petabyte (1 million GB) of data. The CPS had a retention policy requiring all video to be retained for 13 months. Files associated with a criminal case had to be kept for seven years, 20 SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

CMYK

years for a major crime, and 40 years if associated with a terrorism investigation. With higher-resolution video or an expanded retention policy, the storage requirements would multiply. The service had been using a scaledup NAS solution for the video from their patrol car cameras, but expanding this to accommodate the BWC output was too expensive to consider. A multi-tier storage solution offered a savings of $300,000 per year over strictly online storage, with more convenient accessibility for the service’s users. Using a multi-tier approach, the CPS is able to manage over 4PB of data with only 240TB of actual on-site disk capacity.

Summary

M

ulti-tier storage leverages multiple storage media types, using software that dynamically optimizes file locations by priority. The result is faster, cheaper, more reliable access to video and other digital data without the need for a dedicated IT staff to manage and oversee the process. The system is almost infinitely scalable – meeting the future needs of most operations. The most critical files are stored onsite, so a temporary loss of Internet service will not cripple the system. Off-site, cloud-based backups provide redundancy and disaster recovery. Even though the agency’s data is residing on different media types, the user sees the data as if it was residing on a single drive – making access easy and immediate.

Poland and the Czech Republic Drive European Access Control Growth By Alexander Derricott – Market Analyst, IHS Technology

A

lthough the overall European market for electronic physical access control devices grew only by 5.5 percent in 2015, Eastern Europe has been a bright spot for the industry. Between 2015 and 2020, the Polish market is forecast to grow at a 13.1 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and the Czech Republic will grow at a CAGR of 9 percent from 2015 to 2020. There have been substantial changes in end user outlook in Eastern Europe surrounding the need for access control systems. Now end users have decided that the investment in high-quality electronic locks, advanced reader types (such as MIFARE DESFire and ICLASS SE) and other advanced access control systems is worthwhile. This shift in end user perceptions is caused by rising security concerns in the region. Poland has not been affected directly by the territorial disputes occurring farther east in Ukraine, but the Poles are acutely aware that the region could become more unsettled if the situation were to escalate. Security concerns over Russia have led to investment in governmental access control, and government policy on access control is causing a similar impact on the private sector as well. Investment was initially focused on critical infrastructure and government markets, but now manufacturing, commercial and financial markets are experiencing big upticks in growth. Investment is also spread through each of these vertical markets, with sup-

pliers reporting that both new construction and the retrofit markets are benefiting from the surge in available money funds. The Czech Republic is also interested in better higher quality access control products, and security concerns have played a major role in driving the market forward, but to a lesser extent than in Poland. The Czech economy has also been performing far better than previous expectations. The economic outlook for the country peaked in 2015 with gross domestic product (GDP) growth at 4.3 percent, supported by strong industrial production. IHS Economic Country Risk forecasts show industry production will continue to be strong, but with risks mounting, a slowdown in GDP back to the 3 percent range will occur in 2016. Due to the growth experienced in these countries, a variety of small local SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

manufacturers have started to appear – both on the hardware side and the software side. The growth of local companies should help develop end-user confidence in the whole market, which should lead to more long-term projects. These local companies will have an added advantage in regional markets, as they are better able to tailor their products to local tastes and can also be more reactive to end user demands. Recent success in Poland and the Czech Republic is starting to encourage development in adjacent countries – including increased growth in Hungary, Serbia and the Baltic region. Companies based in Poland and the Czech Republic will likely play a big role in shaping the market in the rest of Eastern Europe, which is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 9.5 percent from 2015 to 2020. 55

Farpointe Introduces Added Interoperability to Its Smart Card Readers with OSDP Standard More consistency, heightened security and overall better integration among different manufacturers’ devices

F

arpointe Data, a DORMA Group Company, the access control industry's trusted global partner for RFID solutions, has announced that access control manufacturers, distributors and integrators can add the option of having the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP), a communication standard adopted by the Security Industry Association (SIA), to their Farpointe smart card readers. OSDP lets Farpointe smart card readers interface easily with control panels or other security management systems, fostering interoperability among security devices. “For years, Wiegand has been the industry standard but it is no longer inherently secure due to its original obscure and non-standard nature and the multiple definitions associated with

the Wiegand name have created confusion over the years,” explains Scott Lindley, Farpointe President, “OSDP is IP-extensible for next generation security applications and has already been embraced by important segments of the industry. It is a standard that brings consistency, as well as heightened security and interoperability, between different manufacturers’ devices. This is especially important for our OEM and integrator customers.” According to Lindley, OSDP helps ensure that numerous manufacturers’ products will work with each other. Importantly, interoperability can be achieved regardless of system architecture. The specification handles smartcards, constantly monitoring wiring to protect against attack threats and can

serve as a solution for high-end encryption such as required in federal applications. The specification for handling LEDs, text, buzzers and other feedback mechanisms provides a rich, user-centric access control environment. Significantly, the SIA Access Control & Identity Subcommittee is in the process of making OSDP v 2.1.6 an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard. Many manufacturers have already implemented OSDP and there are many other companies with OSDP devices in development. To encourage this, the SIA is releasing tools that will ensure that these numbers continue to grow. Farpointe’s Delta smart card readers employing the OSDP standard are available for delivery now.

Latin American Fire Equipment Market offers

Growing Opportunities in Automotive, Hospitality and Transportation Industries By Justin Siller – Associate Director, IHS Markit and Tim Hewitt – Analyst, IHS Markit

T

he Latin American fire equipment market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5 percent, between 2015 and 2020. Despite tough economic conditions in much of Latin America, IHS has identified three industries that offer the largest growth opportunities for fire equipment manufacturers: manufacturing, hospitality, and transportation. Many manufacturers are moving their production facilities from the United States, across the border into Mexico and other Latin American countries, to take advantage the lower cost of labor and an improving logistics network. This trend is particularly strong in Mexico, resulting in a high CAGR of 6.2 percent from 2015 to 2020. The automotive industry in particular has made large investments in new manufacturing facilities in Mexico, including Toyota ($1 billion in 2015), Ford ($1.6 billion in 2016), General Motors ($3.6 billion in 2014) and Volkswagen ($1 billion in 2015). According to IHS Markit, annual automotive production in Mexico has increased by 1.2 million units since 2002, while output exceeded 4 million units in 2015. As of 2010 these new manufacturing facilities must comply with the Mexico Official Standard (NOM-002-STPS-2010), providing fire and safety standards in the work environment. These guidelines have been a boon to the fire industry, making fire detection

and suppression fire systems mandatory and more comprehensive. Large international manufacturing companies are likely to invest in more advanced fire equipment, such as networked panels and multi-sensor detectors. Hospitality is also a growing segment of the Latin American fire-detection market. International hotel chains tend to follow the highest safety stand-

idly. Many countries in Latin America are investing in logistics and public transportation infrastructure, including airports and metro lines. In Brazil for example, a new state-of-the-art terminal opened in Sao Paolo in 2014 and Metro Line 6 – a 16-kilometer metro expansion project – is already underway. The metro project is a private-public sector partnership that is slated for completion

ards – going far beyond what is required in many Latin American countries – and fire safety is a priority for most hotel owners, as it is important to make travellers feel safe. Minimizing the possibility of false alarms also improves customer satisfaction, which is why combination detectors, sprinkler systems (especially in Argentina, Chile and Brazil), and voice alarm integrated with existing public-address systems, are being used more often. This industry is also very ripe for retrofitting, compared to other sectors that rely on new construction for most of their revenue. Transportation is also growing rap-

in 2020. Planning for a new $13 billion airport is also taking shape in Mexico City. All of these projects commonly use premium equipment and require hundreds of devices. All of these industries are expected to provide strong growth opportunities over the next five years, despite slow regional economic growth. Slower economic growth is expected to be a shortterm issue, and the overall fire market is ready to thrive. The continued introduction of new legislation, enforcement of these laws, and a need for better overall fire safety will spur future growth across the region.

Lack of Awareness and Fragmentation Hindering Smart Home Growth By Tim Hewitt – Analyst for Security and Building Technologies, IHS Markit

A

merica is the most developed market for smart home systems, where providers of connected professional monitoring services led the market in 2015, with more than 5.5 million customers. As consumers tend to prefer professional installation – a ‘do-it-for-me’ approach to smart homes – professional security providers are well placed to offer these services to the mass market. Security providers and telecom companies are leading the North American market in terms of the install base of smart home systems, and they have experienced strong growth in recent years, as early adopters and tech enthu-

siasts flocked to these smart solutions. However, maintaining a high level of growth is becoming more difficult, as these companies encounter barriers to the mass market. The initial uptake of smart home systems by early adopters was in line with expectations, but existing market barriers became more significant, as companies tried to expand beyond early adopters. In response to primary research, IHS Markit revised its forecasts to account for the lack of broader consumer interest in smart-home products. According to the latest IHS Markit Remote Monitoring Report, the connected SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

remote monitoring market in the Americas is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.9 percent, from 5.5 million subscribers in 2015 to 11.5 million in 2020. While the growth in this segment is strong, the traditional side of remote monitoring is experiencing a decline, as consumers migrate toward connected products. For many service providers, the growth in connected systems is not providing substantial top-line subscriber growth, but it does help counter the decline in their traditional security business. Following are some of the most significant barriers to mass-market adop65

tion of smart home products: ● Consumer awareness. While there has been some increased marketing activity in smart home over recent years, the effect of this increased exposure on smart-home products has been less than expected. However, progress has been made in overcoming this barrier, with research showing increased consumer awareness of smart-home technology. Telecom companies have been instrumental in increasing this awareness. Apple’s entry into the consumer-facing side of the market will also serve to markedly increase awareness. ● Fragmentation. Due to the many and various closed ecosystems and devices, the smart home industry is not very user friendly, which is inhibiting growth. Consolidation in the smart home market is happening slowly, as AllSeen, Z-Wave and Weave alliances work to create industry standards and promote inter-

operability. Recent news from Apple about an iOs10 app that will control all HomeKit-enabled devices is yet another step toward a unified smarthome consumer ecosystem. Apple Home is expected to stimulate the accessibility of do-it-yourself (DIY) systems and reduce the confusion caused by fragmentation within the industry. ● Device and service reliability. It only takes a few reliability issues to tarnish the reputation of an entire industry. While strict guidelines and regulations within the security industry mean that the core function of professional security-based smarthome systems is reliable, many other systems and devices suffer from technical issues that adversely affect the consumer experience. It may be noted that these issues are not necessarily the result of particularly bad product design; instead, with so many moving parts, there are a lot of

things that can go wrong in a smarthome system. Even when everything does work, sometimes a product may not deliver exactly the kind of experience the consumer needs or expects. Still, consumer research reveals there is a lot of consumer desire and enthusiasm for smart-home devices and systems. In fact, surveys show that half of consumers in North America plan to purchase smart home devices within the next year, but these types of findings can also lead to overambitious projections for consumer adoption. The reality is that most consumers have been hesitant to spend their hardearned money in a market still striving for stability and reliability. Monitored security systems have been able to circumvent the high initial cost of smarthome solutions, using an ongoing feebased business model to spread out costs over time, and attach smart home products to ongoing services consumers deem valuable.

Just published by LRG Marketing, a full-service integrated marketing agency with strong expertise in physical and cyber security, the study reveals that providing useful content in e-mail marketing campaigns is actually a game-changer. 56 percent of security professionals said they’d be willing to click through links in an email or even share it with peers if it contained informational and relevant content. The study’s release comes just ahead of ASIS 2016, the country’s largest professional security trade show for end-users taking place September 12-14 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. “There has been a clear shift in the decision-making process within the physical security industry, and it’s reflected in our results,” said Diana Wolff, President, LRG Marketing Communications, “Whether it’s a reseller or an end user, purchasers are doing their own research to find more information about technology and service providers before making any contact with sellers. In adapting to this trend, e-mail marketing is an ideal channel to offer value and information – providing an opportunity to engage rather than simply broadcast a sales pitch.”

ecurity brands that show industry expertise are more likely to receive peer recommendations, according to the LRG Marketing Communications’ E-mail Marketing Study. Providing insight on broad industry trends through thought leadership is key to increasing customer inter72

est through e-mail. 58 percent of respondents said they would likely recommend a supplier to their business partners if they believed the brand to be industry experts. Another insight from the study indicates a surprising reversal and a break from standard practices. In previous years, case histories were seen as the most valued content in the industry, but the study shows little interest in these as an e-mail topic with just six percent saying they want more case studies. “Security professionals need to focus e-mail marketing less on the brand and more on the needs of the target audience,” Wolff said, “The industry can best adapt with informative e-mails that link to blog posts on trending topics or whitepapers that address specific pain points for their customers.”

a straight sales pitch. Half of those surveyed said they’re interested in receiving news on a product release, but 37 percent revealed that they are looking for more product information or special pricing. “Ultimately, in order for any marketing e-mail to make an impact, it needs well-written copy and should link to content that connects with readers in a meaningful way,” said Wolff, “Product launch e-mails shouldn’t simply be a link to a product page; they must include content to help show the product’s value.”

he LRG Marketing Communications’ 2016 E-mail Marketing Study surveyed more than 300 security professionals across the U.S. on their e-mail consumption habits and preferences for communication. The survey analyzed how security pros read e-mails from suppliers and manufacturers, in addition to their preferences for how e-mail marketing within the industry can improve in the future.

‘WARP Cables’ Help

Reduce Data Interference

Stay Cool and Behave as Shielded Cables Trend toward Power R over Ethernet requires &M, the global Swiss developer and provider of cabling systems for top-quality network infrastructures, has done in-depth investigations of the heat-up of network cables in connection with Power over Ethernet (PoE). The test shows that the Cat.6A U/UTP WARP cables developed by R&M dissipate heat more effectively than conventional unshielded cables. ● WARP, an unshielded data cable designed with foil segments, to protect against data interference from adjacent cables. ● WARP beats conventional unshielded cables and makes longer links possible. “WARP cables stay cool and behave just as well as shielded cables. That is an advantage when you are planning a local data network intended to include Power over Ethernet,” says Matthias Gerber, Market Manager LAN Cabling at R&M. In big installations with massive cable bundles and PoE operation, a WARP cable becomes less hot than conventional unshielded U/UTP cables and the link is therefore allowed to be correspondingly longer.

a different type of planning

P

ower over Ethernet (PoE) – that is, supplying power to terminal equipment over data cables – is increasingly popular. The advantages of using PoE are obvious: The power supplied to the device does not have to be separately fed over a power cable and an unwieldy power supply unit or from a battery. Instead, the device draws its energy over the data network. To this end, current has to be fed into the data line in addition to the data signal at a central point, namely in the network distributor. IEEE, the standards organization, is currently working on markedly increasing the transmittable power supplied. The new 4PPoE protocol will make available two new levels of power: 55 W (level 3) and 90 to 100 W (level 4). Up to one ampere is supposed to flow over each twisted pair. This approach opens up new applications such as the operation of high-powered WLAN antennas and monitoring cameras. However, the higher current level poses new challeng-

es for data cabling. Wherever more current is flowing, there will be more heat due to resistance. Warmer cables attenuate data transmission to a greater extent than before. As a result, there may not be enough signal reaching the receiver, thereby making data transmission impossible. This effect must be taken into account when new PoE-compatible LAN cabling is planned. The maximum transmission distance must be adjusted to temperature conditions and shortened.

Shielding helps dissipate heat from cable bundles

T

he relevant draft standards ISO/IEC TR 29125 and Cenelec EN 5017499-1 already describe the cable bundle temperature rise to be expected from the use of 4PPoE. A distinction is made between two heat fractions: ● A bundle heating up from the inside to the outside. ● The entire cable bundle heating up from the outside up to the ambient temperature. The second fraction depends largely on the installation conditions of the cable bundle. The first, the temperature rise within the cable bundle, depends solely on how the cable is constructed. In a typical U/UTP cable, the PoE-related heat-up rises by a factor of

feature

5 whereas in a shielded cable it ranges from a factor of 2.5 to 3 depending on the design. That means in a cable bundle consisting of U/UTP cables, the temperature rises by 2 times as much as in a comparable bundle consisting of S/FTP cables. The reason is that in shielded cables the metal in the shield helps to transport the heat from within the bundle to the outside.

WARP cables with ANEXT foil behave like shielded cables

A

lthough the R&M Cat.6A WARP cables are categorized as unshielded UTP cables, their jacket contains a special foil to reduce data interference from adjacent cables (Alien NEXT). These short metal foil segments (wave reduction pattern, WARP) suppress Alien NEXT, but do not have to be grounded, which saves on installation costs. Matthias Gerber added, “With an R&M WARP cable, you have not only

Under certain circumstances, the temperature difference and the longer link can decide whether a specific installation functions or not.” The thermal measurements on PoE test set-ups showed that the Cat.6A WARP cables behaved just the same as

shielded F/UTP cables. Whereas a normal U/UTP cable of the same diameter can be expected to heat up by a factor of around 5, the R&M WARP cable can be assumed to heat up by a factor of 3, similar to a shielded cable. Installations featuring regular commercial U/UTP Cat.6A cables and R&M WARP Cat.6A cables can be simulated with the PoE calculator from R&M. This tool can be employed to calculate the anticipated temperatures in a cable bundle and from that, the maximum length of a cabling link. With small cable bundles, the difference between the cable types has only a minimal effect. In large installations involving massive cable bundles, a WARP cable can become as much as 14°C less hot. The link is allowed to be as much as 11% longer. R&M, a Swiss Company, offers highperformance cabling solutions for Cat.5e, Cat.6 and Cat.6A systems. For fiber-optic cabling, R&M offers a complete range of cables and components for single-mode (OS1, OS2) and multi-mode (OM3, OM4) fiber optic systems. 75

The Internet of Things: Securing Gateways to Connected Environments By Tom Le – Executive Director, Cyber, GE Digital Wurldtech

T

he Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) have transformed global communications and businesses operations. To be competitive, organizations must be connected. Gartner, Inc. forecasts that 6.4 billion connected devices will be in use worldwide in 2016, up 30 percent from 2015, and will reach 20.8 billion by 2020. In 2016, Gartner expects 5.5 million new devices will be connected every day. The IoT and IIoT improve operational efficiency, but they also introduce thousands of new gateways to IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) environments. And while both are vulnerable to attacks, the entry points and security risks for these sides of the business differ significantly. The primary goal in IT security is to protect data, yet OT security strives to protect physical equipment and keep processes running. Whether from outside threats, like hackers or state sponsored actors, or insider threats, such as a disgruntled employee or human error, unplanned downtime in critical IT and OT environments is not acceptable. This is especially true for industries such as oil and gas, utilities, health76

care and transportation, in which even a couple minutes of downtime can yield tens of thousands of dollars lost or risk to personnel. Every new sensor added to an IT or OT system is a potential vulnerability. When thousands of sensors are added, the potential attack surface increases significantly.

The more you are connected, the more you must control and secure

O

T security needs to be a top priority for workers across all divisions of an organization. The interconnectedness of OT, IT and physical security systems, as well as the commitment from security and non-security professionals to be vigilant in the protection of critical infrastructure is extremely important. Organizations that talk about taking advantage of IoT strategies should be concerned about guarding the control systems that run their plants, machines and equipment. Nonetheless, based on a 2015 Ponemon report commissioned by Raytheon (Raytheon and the Ponemon Institute), 66 percent of organizations are not ready to address these security issues. Organizations are SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

putting their most critical assets at risk in an environment not equipped to protect them. Many organizations wrongly assume that intruders can’t get into their critical infrastructure to create havoc because their OT systems are airgapped or significantly isolated. This is a legacy technique that too many cyber security professionals still count on. They believe that their operational infrastructure is truly and physically isolated from such unsecured networks such as the public Internet or unsecured local area networks. They don’t appreciate that air-gapping, which may have been safe several years ago, no longer does the job that cyber security professionals can rely upon. Today, there can be a false sense of security when protecting a network that lacks an active, unsecured connection. There are two major reasons why this feeling is misguided: 1. Just because a system is operating in isolation doesn’t mean it can’t be connected. An employee simply accessing an e-mail with his keyboard can breach the gap. 2. In today’s world, to raise productivity, a system must be connected. Some-

where along the connectivity chain, the system is going to become attached – either willfully or through a mistake. In fact, most CISO’s are more concerned over accidental activities by authorized users versus threats by external adversaries.

The role of physical security manufacturers, integrators and installers

U

ntil recently, security was rarely taken into account as part of product design. As a result, end-users of legacy equipment and applications have to be diligent in updating security patches and stay aware of how changes to systems impact the overall environment. Beyond product design, there needs to be a cultural shift toward security within organizations. Many purchasers of new, more secure solutions often fail to change default passwords, leaving smart devices vulnerable to cyber attacks. It takes both smart design and smart users to enhance security. To improve security, we must be cognizant of default codes, and connected devices that need to be directly

accessible over the Internet should be segmented into their own network and have network access restricted. The network segment should then be monitored to identify unusual traffic and flag any problems for corrective action. With the great number of connected devices, automated systems are required to conduct effective monitoring.

Why IT security solutions don’t work in critical infrastructure security

T

he cornerstone of IT enterprise security is the use of software patching to eliminate underlying implementation vulnerabilities. Patch management is a particularly painful operation in an OT system; many organizations don’t have the infrastructure for qualifying patches to ensure they don’t interrupt software running on their system. For this reason, they depend on vendors to test and validate new patches will not impact control of their processes. Further, applying a patch to an OT system usually means the system’s operation must be shut down, which is not an ideal remedy when minutes of down-

time can impose costs upon a business. To eliminate downtime when patching, patches must be delivered to a security solution that resides directly in front of the control unit so that the patch can be delivered in a hot mode.

Avoiding the OT security blind spot

T

he exploding number of connected devices increases the risks of cyber attacks. To protect both OT and IT environments, organizations must have dedicated security policies in place, particularly as they moved to increasingly interconnected environments. While many organizations have mature IT security practices, the visibility into the risks affecting the OT environment can be limited. To address this blind spot, visibility is required of what assets and control systems are residing on the OT network. Further, all connectivity to and from these assets have to be analyzed for potential attack vectors. Deploying an ever increasing number of connected devices without first removing the OT blind spot can result in adding uncertain cyber risk that can ultimately impact the safety and availability of OT operations.

ISO 14520 Door Fan & Room Integrity Leak Detection Testing: Identifying precise leak site locations and size using the Portascanner™ Introduction

B

efore installing Clean Agent fire suppression systems (used when sprinklers are inappropriate due to damaging enclosure contents) there are regu-

latory tests which must be undertaken in order to ensure the safety of the building structure and effectiveness of fire suppression. Currently, a Room Integrity Fan Test, using fans to pressurise and SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

hydrocarbon). This test determines the Peak Pressure and Hold Time necessary for ensuring the effectiveness of these fire suppression systems. This article shall focus on the last stage of regulatory testing, namely the locating of potential leak sites in the case of a room having an insufficient Hold Time. It aims to reveal the crucial, previously undiscovered industry benefits of using the Portascanner™ Airtight Integrity Test Indicator for leak detection.

Regulations

T

he testing of room integrity is necessary for adherence to standards and requirements outlined by the NFPA 2001: Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems and ISO 14520: Gaseous Fire-Extinguishing Systems, established concerning enclosure design and testing. The success of clean agent fire suppression systems relies on holding the agent in the room for the correct amount of time, allowing for optimum agent concentration necessary to extinguish the fire. This is part of the total flooding principle on which inert gases and halocarbon agents function. Room integrity tests are imperative for the determination of both the HoldTime and the Peak Pressure needed for successful fire suppression. The level of leakage is carefully monitored in order to ensure the correct agent concentration is achieved; room integrity must be ‘tight’ enough to ensure sufficient retention time according to NFPA or ISO, yet remain ‘loose’ enough to prevent enclosure damage at discharge. The presence of undesired and unregulated leak sites reduces room integrity and will hence dramatically impact the Hold Time and Peak Pressure, placing room contents and potentially wall structures at risk. 78

Current testing

B

oth NFPA 2001 and ISO 14520 standards recommend using Door Fan Testing to analyse the enclosure and retrieve the necessary values for Hold Time and Peak Pressure, and to measure the leakage of a room. This test uses large fans to pressurise the room in question by blowing air into it. The fan speed is adjusted to obtain flow pressure equivalent to the pressure exerted during a fire suppression system discharge, before reversing the fan to depressurise the room. Airflow and pressure readings are then entered into a computer software programme which calculates the Equivalent Leakage Area (ELA) and subsequently the Hold Time and Peak Pressures. This method, created by Retrotec’s Door Fan testing kit, is a reputable and effective method of room integrity testing, and has been the most respected method in recent years. However, a thesis by Todd Hetrick exposed the Door Fan integrity test as applicable for determining the total area of all leakages, but incapable of revealing the specific locations of leak sites. Furthermore, the Fan Test Room Integrity Testing kit itself is not only unable to provide specific leak locations, but also does not provide any information concerning leak aperture. Given that most gaseous chemical agents used for fire suppression are heavier than air, the agent will begin to leak out of any lower level penetrations left unsealed, making their identification even more important. In the case of too little leakage, vents must be created to reduce Peak Pressure in the event of agent discharge for fire suppression. In the case of too much leakage, unwanted leak sites need to be identified and sealed. It is the latter area of room integrity testing that has been comparatively neglected SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

CMYK

despite its importance. Currently, Retrotec has created Puffer Smoke devices in order to allow users to find leakage locations by following smoke pathways released in the protected room. However, these devices are time consuming and inaccurate.

The immediate importance of the Portascanner™

I

t is here that the value of the Portascanner™ Watertight Integrity Test Indicator is evident. This unit is a small, hand-held ultrasonic device featuring dual Decibel & Linear readings in the display and widely used in shipping, naval vessels, submarines and offshore oil & gas platforms. Moreover, the unit is supported by regional Service Stations in USA, UK, Dubai, India and Singapore. Using ultrasonic technology this device is able not only to pinpoint precise leak locations, but to determine their leak apertures as small as 0.06 mm with a tolerance of +/-0.02 mm, making it by far the most accurate device for this function. The Portascanner™ also provides an interpretation of the seal for desired locations, labelling them either watertight, weather tight or full leakage site as appropriate. The advantages of being able to accurately detect the exact leak locations and size are self-evident when considered alongside the importance of reaching Peak Pressure for clean agent fire suppression to be effective. In a case where there is too much leakage in a room (and thus insufficient Hold Time), the Portascanner™ is an unrivalled ideal for the rapid and accurate identification of these sites so that they can be sealed. It is lightweight, fast and easy to use, allowing leak site detection to increase its operational efficiency and speed to a degree that has never been seen thus far in

feature

the Fire Industry. The Portascanner™ is the most mathematically accurate device available providing precise data concerning leak locations and aperture. It is unrivalled in its precision, non-invasive methodology and ease of use, and is the first unit of its kind to be available to the Fire Industry. It is perfectly positioned to work alongside Door Fan testing in order to meet the total requirements for fire safety regulations and ensure the continuous fire protection of rooms using Clean Agent Fire Suppression systems. As Door Fan Testing has been proven to be a reliable and trusted method of room testing by industry experts, it is expected that its dominance shall continue in the near future. The immediate use of the Portascanner™ lies in its improvement of the final stage of room integrity testing – the search for

leak sites in the case of a leakage excess – for which it can vastly improve accuracy and operational efficiency. A device such as this has never been used before in this industry, and is the first to place emphasis directly on this important aspect of room integrity testing.

Conclusion

I

n order to comply with regulations outlined in the NFPA 2001 and the ISO 14520, regular room integrity tests have to be performed on rooms wanting to install Clean Agent Fire Suppression Systems, in order to ensure the continued effectiveness of non-sprinkler fire suppression. Testing of this kind revolves around the establishment of the correct Hold Time and Peak Pressure necessary for the agent to be a successful extinguishant without damaging the

enclosure or its contents. Currently, Door Fan Testing is the primary method for making these calculations and for testing whether or not a room’s integrity is appropriate for clean agent discharge. However, this test has been proven as insufficient for leak site detection, by calculating the overall area of leakage, without providing details on leak location or size. This makes the process of leak sealing slow, and could fundamentally result in insufficient Hold Times being established. The Portascanner™ is an exceptionally accurate and fast method for leak detection which is best used alongside the Door Fan Testing for a complete and comprehensive regulatory room test. It is the first of its kind, is intuitive to use, is non-invasive and highly accurate, and consequently is of immediate use to the fire industry.

MEMS suppliers will therefore focus more on sensor improvement (power and performance), portfolio expansion and innovation (new sensor categories), acquisitions (rapid capability integration), new business models (software services based on sensors) and expansion into

new product categories (drones, smart homes etc). Even as motion sensors and other traditional MEMS markets slow down, there are new and growing opportunities, including the following: ● Virtual-reality headsets using motion sensors and microphones are a growing category in gaming, with HTC, Facebook and Sony all offering products. ● Drones that use motion sensors beSecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

gan to take off in 2015. While this is a segment with a lot of potential, regulatory issues may have an as yet unclear impact on future sales volume, especially when the potential for delivery drones from Amazon are considered. ● Home environmental monitoring, using gas, humidity and temperature sensors, show good opportunity for growth. eywell, as well as carbon-monoxide detection regulations and growing consumer adoption of air-purifiers. ● E-cigarettes, using flow sensors, are also on the rise.

Leading MEMS sensor manufacturer trends

F

ollowing is a top-line review of the three leading MEMS sensor manufacturers, based on 2015 revenue:

1. STMicroelectronics

S

TMicroelectronics is still the revenue leader for consumer MEMS, thanks to its business across a wide range of sensor types. The company’s consumer MEMS revenue lead continued to erode at a fast rate last year, with competitors growing share, the company’s first-place revenue lead has narrowed from $100 million in 2014 to around $10 million in 2015. STMicroelectronic’s motion sensor revenue continued to decline in 2015, however it was helped by its growing success with 6-axis inertial measurement units (IMUs) used mainly by manufacturers in China. STMicroelectronics was hit hard in the last two years, because Apple shifted its gyroscope business to InvenSense

80

● Micro-electrical mechanical systems (MEMS) sensor revenue declined by 3.4% in 2015 with slow growth expected to start from 2017. While microphones and other MEMS categories grew, other categories declined – most notably, motion sensors. ● The three leading MEMS sensor suppliers globally, based on 2015 revenue, were STMicroelectronics at 17.85 percent, Knowles at 17.32 percent and InvenSense at 17.26 percent. ● Sensor companies have seen the reality of a slowing MEMS market and have been working to expand their offerings and business models. in 2014; however, STMicroelectronics won the Apple Watch business in 2015 with its 6-axis IMU and also increased its share of motion sensors used by Samsung in 2016.

2. Knowles

K

nowles is still the dominant leader in MEMS microphones, leading the second-ranked suppler (Goertek) by a power of three in units and revenue.

SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

CMYK

In addition to offering a wide range of analog and digital-output microphones, Knowles has also started shipping its VoiceIQ microphones with local processing in 2016, as it seeks to address both mobile and internet of things (IoT) applications. While MEMS microphone price erosion has led to revenue decline for Knowles, it still ranks second after STMicroelectronics thanks to a favorable shift in microphone adoption. The company has dramatically narrowed the lead enjoyed by STMicroelectronics – from more than $100 million in 2014 to just $10 million last year. Knowles provides a large share of MEMS sensors used in Apple’s products, as well as a share in most handsets, tablets and wearable products from other manufacturers.

3. InvenSense

I

nvenSense overtook Bosch and moved into third-ranked revenue position in the MEMS market last year. The company leads in consumer motion sensor revenue, thanks to dramatic volume growth for 6-axis IMUs as well as its dedicated optical-image stabilization (OIS) gyroscope. InvenSense is the standout MEMS supplier in terms of motion sensor revenue growth, with 26 percent year-over-year revenue growth, while the other sensor leaders suffer declining revenue. Apple is the key and dominant source of this revenue for InvenSense, especially as it loses share in Samsung to STMicroelectronics in 2016. The company is increasingly pushing its MEMS microphone products against strong competition and hopes to release an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in 2017 to capitalise on a rapidly growing segment.

Hamilton, Montana Schools Rely on 3xLOGIC for Access Control Needs Over two years, district continues to expand access management capabilities

3

xLOGIC, Inc. has announced that Hamilton School District, located in Hamilton, Montana, has installed 3xLOGIC’s Intelli-M Access®, a browser-based access control management solution, at all the district’s buildings. Judy Hake, Maintenance and Transportation Director for the school district led the transition to electronic access control. “Initially, we were looking at installing video surveillance. Our supplier, Super Circuit, introduced us to the idea of integrating the new cameras with access control. We had a webinar with our Administration and the School Board made the commitment to this video and access control as a package to improve the overall safety of our facilities. At that time we were introduced to the IntelliM access control system – we’ve been doing the installation ever since, and we’ll continue over this summer.” Intelli-M access control is installed across five locations – the high school, middle, elementary and primary schools, as well as the administrative offices. To date, 174 doors have been fitted with security, most are interior doors with Stanley hardware, and 30 are exterior doors. The district has been somewhat limited by budget, so each principal decided which doors were the priority for the first phase of installation. All exterior doors are on the 3xLOGIC system and each of those

doors opens and closes on a pre-determined schedule. All interior doors, including classrooms, are managed by card access and local police and fire personnel have access cards as well. The district manages 339 teachers and staff on the system, divided into 229 separate groups, each with different access privileges in terms of doors, zones, time, and day. The 3xLOGIC Intelli-M access professional management system was first installed in the summer of 2014 and expansion continues as budget and time are available. Hake and one of the district secretaries are the primary administrators for the system and both went to training provided by 3xLOGIC. Any incidents at any of the five buildings are usually investigated using video footage, but the access control system data has been used as SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

back-up on a number of occasions. “We’re very satisfied with the system as a whole; how much nicer and easier it is to re-issue cards, cancel cards. That’s awesome and worth the investment alone. We’ve always had good tech support, the training was fantastic – it gave us great resources and if we can’t find what we need, we just give 3xLOGIC a call,” said Hake. In addition to all the other features, the district uses the system’s alert feature quite extensively. Alerts are sent by e-mail and/ or text in the event that fire or police personnel have accessed any building, if a door is offline, for unknown or voided credential status being used, and if doors are left open or forced open. All in all, the Hamilton School District has come a long way in two years and there is much more to come. 81

Trying to scale out the analog system would have required significant rewiring at a cost-prohibitive expense, so the security team chose to upgrade to an IP network surveillance system that would increase operational efficiency and be easy to monitor by the full-time security staff. Milestone XProtect IP video management software (VMS) has since been deployed throughout Safeco Field for its

the venue and mitigating liability litigation are key requirements in the Safeco Field security team’s role. Incidents at the ballpark that are criminal in nature which are captured on the surveillance network can be exported as needed for investigation and prosecution. The Milestone solution is open architecture so it can be integrated with additional security features in the stadium, and management is considering connecting with access control, burglar alarms and panic buttons, among others. The options are endless with the Milestone open platform technology. Centerplate, the Mariners hospitality partner at Safeco Field, also upgraded and integrated their analog camera solution into Safeco Field’s Milestone solution. This integration saved Centerplate money by merging their video system into the stadium’s security network which gives Safeco Field security full visibility into secured areas where they had no access before. With cameras in the stock locations, outside kitchens and cash handling areas, the stadium security and concessions teams are able to work together to tie all cameras into one efficient Milestone-managed system.

DVR solution would not have provided the extensive coverage Milestone offers,” said Bob Kusche, IPVS Security Solution Advisor at Milestone Platinum Partner Differential Networks, “With the Milestone software, the network load was perfectly acceptable to their IT department, and we now have the capability to increase the security features in the ballpark as we further expand coverage.” The ability to install flexible, scalable Milestone software on standard servers versus a less capable series of NVRs

was the biggest up-front advantage for the Mariners security team. Features such as mapping and sharing access to cameras with multiple users has helped the Mariners deploy increased security measures. Christopher Markham, Service Account Manager at Differential Networks said, “Additional cameras and the expense of cabling and installation that used to cost up to thousands of dollars are now not nearly as prohibitive. We can now be smarter with the types of cameras we install thanks to Milestone’s

support of multiple brands and models.” “Before Milestone, looking for one or two people in a crowd of 47,000 was like finding a needle in a haystack,” said Christopher Ellis, Director of Safety & Security, Seattle Mariners, “Today, rather than searching laboriously through game footage of the crowd, we can find and export our video in minutes and find that ‘needle’ efficiently, keeping the ballpark’s guests and assets safe. I’m very happy with Milestone and look forward to successful seasons, on and off the field!”

DAHUA Secures Durrat Al Bahrain Dahua Technology applies innovative wireless solutions to provide extensive surveillance coverage for the Durrat Al Bahrain luxury artificial island chain

Background

D

urrat Al Bahrain is a luxury artificial island chain in Bahrain, featuring a total of 15 large islands that hold an 18-hole golf course, marina, restaurants and shops, and over 1000 villas in a 21 km2 (13 mi2) area. As the area became more popular and drew an increasing number of tourists, the resort owner needed a high-security surveillance solution that would cover all main areas, including points of access and the holiday villas. Dahua and local system integrator, Absolute Electronic Technology, whom they had previously worked with, were called to solve this complex surveillance issue for the island chain. Dahua provided a number of weather-resistant HD network cameras and video transmitters, as well as high-speed, HD DVRs as part of this customized solution.

Challenge

A

n important condition while implementing this solution was that since Durrat Al Bahrain is an island chain, traditional wired or simple wireless transmission methods would not suffice to support live video feeds over the large remote area. Instead, an innovative solution was required in order to ensure reliable long-range wireless SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

video transmission throughout the area. With numerous five-star hotels, a golf course, 12 bridges, a marina, along with complex land and villa configurations on the crescent-shaped man-made islands, camera setups needed to be versatile, covering a large field of view to guarantee the safety of island tourists and workers while being discreet so as to preserve the luxurious nature of the island’s design. eras not only needed to support wireless transmission, but also withstand various outdoor conditions such as rain, storms, and relatively hot summer temperatures.

Solution

I

n order to supply high-quality, wireless video feeds over the entire resort, Dahua employed a comprehensive solution entailing the use of 5.2GHz WLAN AP wireless HD camera products and the versatile, long-range 5.8GHz Wireless Video Transmission Device (PFM881). High-speed preview and playback digital video recorders (DVR) were also integrated into this solution, allowing workers to view live video feeds in up to 4K resolution, while supporting the recording of video onto high-capacity HDDs. The main camera used in this pro-

ject was the 2MP Full HD network IR bullet camera (IPC-HFW2220R-Z). Its enhanced wireless transmission abilities and high-quality image ensure complete coverage. In order to protect against versatile weather conditions, namely rain and sea water, Dahua enclosed the connections for each HD network camera in its Waterproof Junction Box (PFA135). Multiple 2MP Full HD network vandal-proof IR wedge dome cameras (IPC-HDBW4220F) were also installed, and 32 channel super 4K network video recorders (NVR608-32-4K) were installed to collect the various HD video feeds sent wirelessly from transmitters.

Results

T

he wireless network infrastructure used in this solution significantly

improved the efficiency in placing surveillance around the islands. HD Network cameras guarantee top-level security due to high quality recording and advanced wireless live video transmission and playback. As a result of this wireless solution, multiple types of cameras cover the island chain, which send feeds through long-range wireless transmitters to multiple HD DVR recorders. Because the recorders are more centralized and less devices and components are required in a wireless setup, the entire system was able to be implemented at a lower cost than other traditional configurations. Durrat Al Bahrain is now much more secure and vacationing tourists are safer.

have approximately 4000 users at this location. Now, they wanted to control access to the gym at three entries. Two of the entries had turnstile for normal people while the third had a simple door for handicapped people. They wanted a solution that would ensure hygiene and help maintain health of their members. The biggest challenge was to integrate the solution with KRS – the gym and membership management software. They wanted to transfer all membership details from their KRS software to the access control software for controlling access. Member details like name, date of joining, membership completion date,

address proof and ID proof should be there with the software which controls the entry. Based on details in the application server, a user is allowed/ denied entry. They wanted the software to be updated with details such as timings, membership period details etc., so that members whose membership has expired are not allowed to enter the premises. Another thing they required was controlling entry of the handicapped members since biometric technology would not serve perfectly in their case. Viva gym wanted to eliminate human intervention in these activities in order to enhance error-free process and customer satisfaction.

Matrix offered solution

L

ooking at the complete process of the gym, Matrix offered four COSEC DOOR PVRs – a palm vein based access control and time-attendance terminal, a COSEC DOOR CAW – an RFID card based wireless access control and time-attendance terminal for handicapped people,

COSEC LE PLATFORM and three COSEC LEUSERS 1000. Two COSEC DOOR PVRs were installed at two of the three gym entries for access control. Two COSEC DOOR PVRs were installed at two entries of the Admin department for enrolment purpose. One COSEC DOOR CAW was installed at the main entrance of the gym for handicapped people. COSEC CENTRA Application software was integrated with the KRS via Web API. As soon as the member details are fed into the system, a three digit PIN is generated from the KRS which goes to the COSEC application software. A member can use this three digit PIN only three times. When a member comes to the gym, he or she will be using this three digit PIN and enroll his or her palm for further use. Once the PIN is used for three times, the member will not be allowed access into the gym. In case of a handicapped member, he or she will be required to

collect an RFID card from admin in order to get access to the gym. When a member tries to access with the palm, the palm template is verified with the template stored in PVR as well as the template stored in the local server for faster verification process. For reducing palm rejection, multiple templates capturing option has been given – total five different templates can be taken for a user. This significantly reduces the ratio of ‘palm template rejection.’ KRS and COSEC server keeps track of membership duration as the respective member's credential will be disabled upon completion of membership duration.

TBWA Australia Uses Quantum’s StorNext TBWA Australia increases efficiency of collaborative workflow, protects media content and reduces operational costs with Quantum StorNext Storage Solution. Leading creative agency automates backup and archiving, locally and in the Cloud, while facilitating faster access to all stored media

T

BWA Australia, one of the country’s top advertising and creative agencies, is using a Quantum storage solution powered by StorNext® to streamline content sharing, keep content protected and available and reduce administrative overhead by hundred of hours a year.

“With growing demand for digital media production outpacing our existing storage systems, we needed a solution that could ensure data protection while saving staff time,” said Jaymz Hingert, Regional IT Manager at TBWA Australia, “Of the solutions we evaluated, only SecurityLink India ■ 1 September 2016

Pushing the limits of direct-attached and RAID storage

P

rior to deploying the Quantum platform, video editors at TBWA Australia worked on servers with direct-attached disk storage, a model that ultimately compromised both workflow efficiency and the security of valuable content. To bring content from existing assets into current work, team members had to find the disk, mount it, locate the right files and then find enough space to restore the appropriate content back onto the local disk where they were building the new project. In addition to bogging down editing processes, this model complicated collaboration because editors could only share files by moving RAID arrays between servers or using flash drives, whether transferring the files across the office or between offices in different cities. TBWA Australia’s rapidly increasing workload – and corresponding increase in the volume of high-resolution files requiring storage – put further pressure on storage. Teams worked on RAID arrays until they were full and then stored them on-site with rarely enough time for a real backup. Pres-

ervation of this growing store of client content was a significant concern because moving data off-site for disaster recovery (DR) protection simply wasn’t possible.

Automating content protection and streamlining collaborative workflow

B

y supporting a fully automated endto-end workflow, the Quantum solution has made it easy for TBWA Australia to improve collaboration among editors, protect content and leverage direct access to archived data to speed reuse of existing assets. Supplied and integrated by Quantum partner CompNow, the StorNext-powered system provides a dedicated SANfabric, 48TB of high-performance disk, a Quantum Xcellis™ Workflow Director to manage data across different tiers, a StorNext AEL500 LTO archive and Quantum QCloud® off-site cloud storage. Within the agency’s new workflow, StorNext Storage Manager™ automatically creates a tape copy of any file saved on Xcellis shared storage. Stored in the StorNext AEL archive, this tape copy serves as a backup while work is in progress. When a project is complete,

StorNext then removes the content from shared storage, while the tape copy remains accessible from that storage as an active archive, minimizing the disk space required on the shared storage. The IT team also has established a policy so that whenever StorNext makes a copy to the tape archive, it creates and sends a copy to Q-Cloud. As a result, TBWAAustralia can use the tape for normal recovery and archive access while maintaining DR protection. “Q-Cloud provides automated, indefinite DR protection,” added Hingert, “If the building burns down tomorrow, we’ve got a copy of everything – current projects and old material – safely on QCloud.” Collaboration across TBWA Australia is also much easier and more efficient because editors are able to see everything, no matter where it’s stored, through the same file system. LAN connections facilitate transmission of files between offices for faster, simpler sharing of content across the agency. “StorNext has helped our creative team to realize an immense gain in productivity,” said Hingert, “and we all sleep much better knowing that all our data is safe, both on tape and in the cloud.”

which builds a technological legacy enabling streamlined transportation and improved peace of mind for travelers.” “Gemalto’s expertise in implementing contactless payment systems has allowed us to stay ahead of the curve in delivering successful wearable and sticker solutions,” said Rodrigo Serna, President for the Americas at Gemalto, “Gemalto has worked with RioCard implementing a pilot program in 2013 that leveraged its NFC SIM card technology, allowing people to use their mobile phones as RioCard contactless transit cards. Together, RioCard and Gemalto are at the forefront of the wearable payment trend which is expected to grow more than six-fold reaching 126 million devices by 2019.”

380 MOBOTIX Outdoor Cameras Protect UNESCO World Heritage Site in Pompeii Smart and cost-efficient IP video solutions made in Germany protect people and premises

P

ompeii is the world-famous ancient Roman city near modern Naples which may receive up to 15,000 tourists in a single day – a numerical turnout second to only the Coliseum in Italy. To protect the extraordinarily well-preserved artifacts and decorated surfaces and to prevent potential damage, over 380 MOBOTIX dualdome cameras were installed at the inner heart of this archaeological site. MOBOTIX won over all other technologies, especially because of the unrivaled image quality and the decentralized system structure which results in less network infrastructure and a reduc-

tion of the overall system costs. The need to install a video security system was born of the Great Pompeii project, an undertaking ordered by the Italian Government for the purpose of reinforcing the effectiveness of the conservation, prevention, maintenance, and restoration in the archaeological area of Pompeii. The archaeological site sends very frequent reports of graffiti, scratches, and defacing of the walls and frescoes of the Roman Domus villas, which are at the heart of the archaeological site. These acts of vandalism are carried out by tourists with their pens and fingernails when they somehow manage to stay within the walls on purpose even after the site is closed to the public. The Italian MOBOTIX partner Metoda had no doubt about the best solu-

tion to offer to the Pompeii Authority for implementing the video surveillance project. “MOBOTIX easily satisfied the requirements of the bid for tenders, and was in fact the only technology truly capable of providing an answer to the actual requirements of the Authority. A great success, most of all because of the quality of the images, which completely surpassed all the expectations of the customer”, explains Cesare Gonnelli, General Manager of Metoda.

The protection of the World Heritage Site of Pompeii is just one example of a successful deployment of MOBOTIX outdoor cameras world-wide. MOBOTIX outdoor cameras are Made in Germany in line with highest quality standards and tested in operation from -30°C up to +60°C. Currently MOBOTIX offers a doubling of the manufacturer warranty from two to four years for all outdoor models until the end of September 2016.

colleagues in the field via reliable and robust voice communication. Having attended around 73,000 incidents in the past year alone, New Zealand Fire Service needs the best tools for the job. The organisation will receive more than 4,500 new radios designed for use in the most severe fire ground environments. A major feature of the solution is a cornerstone Motorola Solutions innovation, a remote speaker microphone that will be fully integrated within firefighters’ breathing apparatus. This will be combined with the radio’s convenient push-to-talk button, which enables firefighters to communicate easily and safely in the harshest conditions. Paul Baxter, Chief Executive & National Commander of the New Zealand Fire Service said, “Communication is critical to safety on the incident ground, and much of that communication comes from the use of incident ground control

Salford City Council Reaps Immediate Benefits from Hikvision 4K PTZ Camera S

to a brand new 4K Smart PTZ camera, the Council jumped at it. The results, including increased viewing distances and image quality without a major impact on bandwidth, have been remarkable – and could revolutionise the way Salford uses CCTV cameras in future. Salford City Council in Greater Manchester has truly embraced Hikvision technology to provide its video surveillance. Hikvision Darkfighter cameras are providing crystal clear night-time images, and the Council is upgrading to Hikvision cameras wherever there is a fail-

alford City Council has experienced a wealth of recent success using Hikvision’s IP cameras – to the extent that it has been standardising on Hikvision cameras across its public space surveillance network of 109 cameras. So when the chance arose to upgrade

ure with a legacy camera. Councillor David Lancaster, Lead Member for Environment and Community Safety, explains that the new 4K camera is leading the way both in terms of performance and helping the Council manage budget reductions, “With this technology we can reduce the number of cameras we use, requiring less capital but still getting the same results. In one instance, for example, we were able to decommission a camera which had developed a fault; instead of repairing or replacing it, we upgraded the other camera covering that street to a Hikvision IP model. That camera, courtesy of its Darkfighter technology and 23x zoom, can now see the full length of that road. We never would have been able to do

that with the old technology. “We have a number of strategic vantage points, provided courtesy of high rise housing blocks. These blocks are located in most of our wards, and being 13 storeys or so high they give us a very good view of the surrounding area.”

Motorbike dangers

O

ne of these rooftops is located in East Salford, where local residents have complained about the use of offroad motorbikes travelling at excessive speed, with very little regard for pedestrian or vehicle safety. Previous cameras used on that high-rise rooftop struggled to obtain clear facial images of the riders. Lancaster says, “When Hikvision announced that they had released a 4K PTZ camera, we immediately thought it was an ideal opportunity for us to try it in this location. Our CCTV operators were blown away by it. “With this camera’s 8 megapixel image they can now clearly see the full length of that road, which they have never been able to do before. The field of view on this camera is in excess of half a mile. Not only can operators get that increased distance, they can now achieve facial detection of people riding motorbikes at speed, as well as reading vehicle registration numbers.”

Night time colour

T

he camera is a Hikvision DS2DF8836IV-AELW model, which features 4K 8 megapixel (4096x2160) resolution, 36x optical zoom, Smart Suite analytics, Smart Tracking, Smart Recording, 200m infrared range, and an in-built wiper function. Lancaster added, “With the previous camera we had installed there, the image went to black and white around 11pm at night. With this new camera, the images stay full colour at all hours of the day and night. And that is despite the camera being 13 storeys up. We can’t quite get our heads round how this camera can still record full colour images in very low light conditions. “The result is that we’re getting clear images day and night and are able to give the police even better information to help them locate offenders and missing persons. The image quality is now phenomenal.” The new camera’s increased field of view is also allowing the Council’s CCTV operatives to pan around and cover roads that they have never been able to view before. This additional coverage is being replicated with other Hikvision cameras

around the city, providing a welcome relief on budget pressures.

Bandwidth benefits

W

hile the new 4K camera packs a lot of pixels into its images, it has a surprisingly gentle impact on Salford’s network bandwidth. Lancaster says, “Our network is primarily wireless. So we’re usually very apprehensive – we were when we went from 1.3MP Hikvision cameras to 2MP, and now we’re going from 2MP to 8MP. But our findings are that they’re nowhere near as bandwidth intensive as we would have envisaged. “When you look at the previous digital IP cameras we used from other manufacturers, we were finding that they were drawing something like 12mb on a 1.3MP camera. Whereas with Hikvision’s 4K 8MP camera, we can stream it at 8mb, and still get the full 4K image.”

Dave Mast is the Technical Operations Director for NewPointe Community Church, “With our previous system, the user interface was not intuitive at all. So, when we started shopping around to upgrade our access management, ease of use was at the top of our list. In our environment, there are a number of people who need to use the system, including volunteers, who don’t have any experience with access management software. We wanted the best technology out there, but it had to be user-friendly.” “Our second priority was scheduling capabilities. With other systems, the door schedule capability is very static, there’s not enough flexibility, and they are designed mainly for weekly-

At this time, Mast and his staff administrate the Intelli-M Access system; however, “Our goal is to reach a point where IT is no longer in charge of granting and managing access. Intelli-M is built to be as simple as possible. Mast commented that they went with the Corporate edition specifically for this reason. IT will still have overall central management, for trouble-shooting purposes, to provide back-up to unlock a door, or deal with a scheduling issue. “I’ve been nothing but satisfied with the 3xLOGIC system and quite satisfied with the support we’ve received. Any issues we’ve had, the 3xLOGIC folks have been great. Everything we’ve installed works well, we have the reliability we need, and overall we’re very satisfied,” Mast concluded.
