Forty years ago it all began.
Sedgwick County Zoo opened its doors for the very first time in August of 1971 after years of hard work, imagination and planning by a small group of very dedicated people. And what started as primarily empty acreage in northwest Wichita, has transformed into one of the best zoos in the country. In 2011, we celebrated 40 years of milestones and memories. Record crowds came to experience what they knew at the Zoo and what was new at the Zoo. We opened our doors to many who have never experienced our Zoo before, thanks to the generosity of our friends at Dillons offering a free weekend in honor of our birthday. Almost 45,000 people attended the celebration weekend and you could feel the excitement and wonder in the air. It quickly became clear to me—watching this celebration of the past—that our future will be just as exciting and adventurous; ever-changing and growing for generations to come. We are inspiring our guests to care about animals and the environment. It is our sincerest hope that this in turn will lead to positive action on behalf of animals and their wild homes. Our achievements over the past 40 years were made possible because so many have recognized the unique role the Zoo plays in environmental learning and wildlife conservation, as well as our important contributions to the quality of life and the economy of our community and our state. On behalf of our board of trustees, staff and volunteers, thank you for your support today and your support for the exciting years that lie ahead. Happy Birthday Sedgwick County Zoo: 40 and fabulous! Sincerely,
Mark C. Reed Executive Director
CHEERS to 40 YEARS!
Today’s Sedgwick County Zoo represents a continuing commitment “to interpret nature for the layman,” the philosophy on which it was founded. In the beginning, the master plan called for each exhibit area to represent a special theme or ecological unit and for all areas to be easily accessible from a central hub, or Central Plaza as it is now known. For 40 years, this philosophy has driven every aspect of your Zoo’s development. Since its opening on August 25, 1971, the Sedgwick County Zoo has grown to become the No. 1 outdoor family tourist attraction in Kansas. As one of the 10-largest zoos in the nation in total acreage, your Zoo is home to more than 3,000 animals of over 400 different species, placing it among America’s top 20 zoos in terms of species variety.

As we’ve grown and evolved here, we’ve also set some benchmarks beyond our immediate community. For example, the opening of our Jungle in 1977 represented one of the nation’s first rainforest exhibits. In 2003, with the renovation and expansion of our South American Pampas and Australian Outback, it became one of the largest walk-through exhibits in the U.S.

always has a positive attitude while providing an enormously important service. He is truly an asset to the Zoo. Caleb Noller has been selected as the 2011 Teen Volunteer of the Year. Starting his volunteer work in 2008 by joining in teen summer programs, he has shown continuous growth and passion for the Zoo. He is always fun to be around and has transitioned well into a leadership role within the teen volunteers of the African Veldt. Donating a total of 1,628 hours of service, he comes in early and stays late to help keepers in any way that he can, all while being a full time student. He has become quite efficient in both daily routines and in helping with special projects. This past year he was instrumental in helping clean up after a large storm caused significant damage to areas throughout the Veldt. Caleb’s reliability and responsibility have left a lasting impression.

Zoobilee: Gates of Paradise The Sedgwick County Zoo’s annual fundraising gala, Zoobilee, held Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to midnight was a success! This year’s theme was Gates of Paradise! Zoobilee patrons spent the evening sampling food and drink, dancing under the stars and bidding on great silent and live auction items. A variety of area restaurants served samples of their best dishes and drinks, from old favorites to exotic new delicacies, Wichita’s eateries put on their best for Zoobilee. Following the live auction Zoobilee guests danced the night away to the sounds of Gooding. Zoobilee is the Sedgwick County Zoo’s largest fundraising effort, and is one of the most successful events of its kind. Proceeds from the event go to support daily Zoo operation and help keep Zoo daily admission prices affordable. As part of the Zoo’s commitment to conservation, a portion of this year’s funds will go to support Friends of the Zoo. Thanks to everyone for making our Zoo and this years’ Zoobilee a success. We couldn’t do it without your continued support.

In-Situ and Global Conservation Partnerships Mariana Avifauna Conservation (MAC) Project Sr. Zookeeper Scott Newland usually works in our Jungle building every day. However for two weeks he worked in Saipan on behalf of Sedgwick County Zoo. “Why Saipan?” you ask. Sedgwick County Zoo supports the Mariana Avifauna Conservation (MAC) Project in Saipan. Ultimately, the MAC project was initiated by the Division of Fish & Wildlife, in cooperation with US Fish & Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, as a response to the threat of the brown tree snake in the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Specifically it was developed to identify and implement conservation actions necessary to ensure the persistence of CNMI’s avifauna. The establishment of the brown tree snake on Saipan, and the increased threat of the species’ establishment on the islands of Rota and Tinian, serves as a direct threat to the survival of many of the CNMI’s endemic and rare bird species. The MAC project is intended to provide the avifauna of the Mariana archipelago with the best possible chances for long-term survival, with the objectives of preserving, maintaining, and establishing selfsustaining populations of native, free flying birds secure from the threat of the brown tree snake. Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Kansas zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, including Sedgwick County Zoo, regularly contribute funds, equipment, and personnel support to the black-footed ferret and other reintroduction programs. In 2011, three Sedgwick County Zoo staff were sent into the field: Dr. Sandy Wilson, Veterinarian; Ginny Kilgore, Keeper; and Barb Hoppins, Office Specialist. From dusk to dawn

they scoured pastures with spotlights, guided by GPS, searching for the emeraldgreen eye shine and distinct movement of the black-footed ferret. When a ferret was located they would attempt to trap the animal. Once trapped, the ferret was brought back to the “field hospital” where it was anesthetized, checked for existing microchip identification, examined, and vaccinated for distemper. Once the procedures were completed and the animals were fully awake, they were returned to their burrows. The fall 2011 survey found 29 animals, which included adults and kits. This number was down slightly from the spring 2011 survey of 43 adults. Reasons for the decrease are hard to pinpoint, but are probably related to a decrease in prairie dog numbers and other foods that the ferrets eat, an increase in predator numbers, and numerous other unidentified factors. The best finding of this field work is that reproduction is still being seen in these populations. Avian Egg Incubation Workshop—Shanghai, China In October, Joe Barkowski, Curator of Birds, traveled to Shanghai, China to assist in the first ever Avian Egg Incubation Workshop. This workshop was hosted by the Shanghai Zoo and the Chinese Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Attendees came from over 20 different facilities in China. Barkowski joined Susie Kasielke, Curator/Birds at the Los Angeles Zoo, who acted as the primary facilitator for this event. The goal of the workshop was to train at tendees in aspects of avian incubation. The five day workshop included lecture for half of the day, which involved a translator to impart the information to students in Mandarin. The second half of each day was dedicated to lab work, which utilized 300 plus chicken eggs to demonstrate the different developmental stages of avian embryos. Barkowski described the workshop as “a wonderful experience and opportunity to not only show international colleagues our techniques and interpretations but also to learn about their own husbandry and conservation projects in China.”

The Quarters for Conservation raised $81,215.50 in 2011. Over $108,000 goes to support worldwide conservation programs Visiting Sedgwick County Zoo gives guests an opportunity to see wild animals up close and thus gain understanding, appreciation, and respect for some magnificent creatures that many people may never get to see in the wild. But another way we strive to help animals is by donating to conservation programs, which allows us to play a part in safeguarding the world’s wildlife. Conservation initiatives such as those listed protect wild animals both in captivity and in their natural habitats. Sedgwick County Zoo has been recognized with national and international awards for its
support of field conservation programs and successful breeding of rare and endangered species. In 2011, Sedgwick County Zoo was able to designate $81,215 for various conservation programs through the Quarters for Conservation. The Q4Cprogram gives .25¢ of every gate admission to support Sedgwick County Zoo conservation efforts in the wild. Another $27,622 was collected from the new public donation boxes in the Zoo and through our Gift Shop program that allows guests to round up purchases to help fund conservation programs. Just by coming to the Zoo, our guests help support our contributions to worldwide animal conservation.
