ACTIVITIES
getting the most out of your vacation
When you look for ‘something else to do’, there is an array of options. Finding activities is never a problem—whether you are in Daytona Beach or any of its neighboring communities. There is a never ending litany of happenings that promises to get you out of your hotel room. And when you think of activities, I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is the beach, the centerpiece of Daytona’s Tourism. While you are playing on the 26 miles of beach, be sure to check out the surfers. This area is one of the top ten places in the world for hanging ten. You will be in awe of their skill at mastering the waves and might consider the possibility of giving it a whirl yourself.
For something out of the ordinary try one of our escape rooms, Code to Escape. Their brand game, “Ghost of Tituba Volume II,” the scary truth is now open. Also, experience eco adventure, the Daytona Beach Zip Line Daytona’s Adventure, built in the trees of Tuscawilla Park. After you’ve taken part in these exciting activities, the following day can be a lazy, ‘guilt free’ day at the beach. World-class courses await golfers and angling enthusiasts will be torn between inshore and offshore fishing. Art connoisseurs will be immersed in the number of galleries in the area. Parks are dotted all around the area and many offer the opportunity to hike, kayak or canoe. If you are feeling more sedate, take a leisurely, informative boat ride along the river or do a little aquatic bird watching.

Whale Watching
Walkover Whale Watchers on Whale Project e, Marineland Right Photo by S. Osborn
January through March
If you see people gathered on the dune crossovers with binoculars, they are probably watching whales. The calving grounds for endangered North Atlantic Right Whales are off our coast, and if you’re lucky, you may see mothers with calves some distance offshore. Volunteer whale spotters help scientists by reporting whale sightings as they migrate from their feeding grounds in the northeastern US to the shallow waters off NE Florida. Scientists believe there are fewer than 500 in the population. Spotters look for a V-shaped blow. High places like dune crossovers and tall buildings give the best views. If you want to learn more, short lectures by author/whale watcher Frank Gromling are offered at Gamble Rogers State Park. Call 386-517-2086 for a schedule.
Lecturer at Gamble Rogers S.P. Photo courtesy of Frank Gromling
If you spot a whale call 888-979-4253. Sightings are recorded by the Marine Resources Council and sent to a national database. The Council verifies sightings and notifies ships in the area to keep a lookout for whales. Most injuries to whales occur from collisions with ships. The Marineland Right Whale Project (aswh.org) trains volunteers to assist scientists in sightings, however, observers are required by US law to keep a distance of 500 yards. The whale pictured here was born nearby and returned to have her calf in the same area.

Eldora House This house is one of a few remaining artifacts of earlier life (built c. 1913) in a small waterfront community on Mosquito Lagoon. The town of 100 people existed between 1877 and 1900. The city's decline began after three freezes during the late 1880s and 1890s that destroyed the town's citrus crops. After 1910, the Eldora "State" House was built. Open Fri. – Sun., 12 – 4 p.m., located in N. District of Canaveral National Seashore, 386-428-3384. (grid FF/GG - 8)
The Sugar Mill Ruins Once a highly functional sugar mill, built during the early 19th century. This 17 acre historic site contains the sugar mill, as well as other buildings, which were destroyed during the war between the Seminole Indians and the United States. Sugar Mill Ruins, 600 Mission Dr., 386-427-2284. (grid FF/GG - 8)
Turtle Mound This prehistoric archaeological site dates back to more than 14,000 years ago and was created by the Timucuan Indian civilization over a period of several hundred years. This kitchen midden is made up of oyster shell remains and resembles the shape of a turtle, hence the name. Follow a park trail to its peak as it leads to a spectacular panoramic view of the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, 386-428-3384, www.NPS.gov/cana/index.htm (grid FF/GG - 8) Images provided by New Smyrna Beach Area Visitor's Bureau. www.VisitNSBfl.com

Bike Week
History
Early motorcycle designers began attaching motors to bikes and testing them at Daytona Beach over a century ago. In 1907 a motorcycle achieved a top speed of 136 mph! Bike Week officially began in 1937 when races were held on an oval course that was laid out on the sand and A1A. In 1961 the races were moved to the new Daytona International Speedway. Since the 1980s, Bike Week has drawn hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts who come to watch the bike parades and major motorcycle races at the Speedway. DINING
a world of dining choices
If you enjoy sampling new and exotic fare one day and indulging in ‘comfort’ food the next, we promise to satisfy your every whim. From ethnic foods like Thai, Japanese, Mediterranean and Italian, to best loved foods like mouthwatering fresh seafood and juicy burgers. If you are an avowed foodie, it doesn’t get any better than this. Whether you are in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach Ormond Beach or visiting any of our local communities, not only will you discover a variety of food, you will find an assortment of venues as well. The picture is complete if your restaurant overlooks a sun-drenched beach or a marina on the Intracoastal Waterway. Actually, anytime you eat by a window, good food seems to taste even better with the sunshine sparkling off the water.
Welcome the day by watching the sunrise over the ocean while feasting on eggs Benedict. End the day dining on scrumptious, fresh caught seafood prepared to your liking, all while witnessing a spectacular sunset. Tomoka Brewing Company, in Port Orange, has full service dining and bar and local craft beer, with brewing tours on site, by appointment. In between, take a coffee break at an outdoor café, or steal a midday break in an informal, sit down diner. Casual wear is appropriate for most establishments, but formal options exist as well. If you enjoy something different, Dine & Cruise is now menu items. Slow cooked pot roast offering some and vegetable lasagna along with their regular options. Check our Dining Guide on pages 40-41, No matter, there is always a location and selection to satisfy your every desire.

Look for the wings, take a selfie & post your pic on facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #DelandWings. (grid AA-6)
Murals of DeLand Take a step back in time and go on a historical tour, a Mural walk if you will, down the streets of Historic DeLand. You can download a Mural Walk brochure, with a map showing the location of each work of art. www.MainstreetDeland.org (grid AA-6)

What is a Florida Lobster? Lobstering is the largest economic segment of the fishing industry in Florida, with $20 million worth of lobster brought in annually. Florida lobsters are sent all over the state and country, but they're rarely marketed as Florida lobsters. If you've ever had a lobster tail at a restaurant or bought one from the grocery store, you may have had a Florida lobster--without even realizing it. The Clawless Lobster The lobsters in Florida's waters don't have claws, which is why they're often used for lobster tails. While they otherwise look similar to the clawed American lobster that Maine has made famous, Florida lobsters aren't closely related to cold-water lobsters. Without claws to defend themselves, Florida lobsters use their antennae to defend themselves when threatened. They scratch the ends of their antennae against their shells to create a loud screeching sound that hopefully frightens the predator threatening them. The Traveling Lobster Unlike the American lobster, which is only found along the Northern Atlantic Coast, the spiny lobsters of Florida are found in warm seas throughout the world. They're harvested in Australia, New Zealand, the Mediterranean, the Bahamas and, of course, Florida. Spiny lobsters are found throughout the world because they often travel vast distances during their lifetime. As larvae, they may drift thousands of miles along ocean currents. Once they mature into adults, they migrate from the shallow waters where the ocean currents deposited them to offshore reefs. When migrating, they walk single-file along the seafloor with up to 50 other lobsters, scratching their antennae on the lobster in front of them to maintain their formation and scare off predators. The next time you have a lobster tail, you might be enjoying some of our state's fine seafood. Although the Florida lobster isn't well-known, it's loved by many seafood aficionados.
