2011 bridges to peace overview John Leg, Peace Market 2006
On Sunday, October 23, 2011, the bridges of Central London will become inspirational paths to peace as hundreds of enthusiastic, globallyminded walkers, corporate team members, energized volunteers, and loyal supporters participate in a 10K walk to benefit Seeds of Peace. Bridges to Peace is hosted by the Seeds of Peace UK Steering Committee – a dynamic group of socially conscious philanthropists, community and business leaders, and Seeds of Peace program graduates who are dedicated to our mission: empowering young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence. The day will culminate in a celebratory picnic where attractions will include musical entertainment, celebrity guest appearances, a barbeque, Kids Fun Corner, as well as contests and raffles with great prizes!

seeds of peace MISSION, HISTORY, AND OBJECTIVES Seeds of Peace is a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization dedicated to a more peaceful future, free from hatred and violence. Our mission is to empower young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence. Founded in 1993 by award-winning journalist and author, John Wallach, Seeds of Peace was built on the belief that given the chance, youth will choose coexistence over conflict, hope over fear. He believed that these choices would permeate their local cultures and have a positive, enduring impact on the future of international peace and prosperity. Beginning with a transformational experience at the Seeds of Peace International Camp and continuing with follow-up regional programming throughout the years, Seeds of Peace helps participants- known as ‘Seeds’- develop the knowledge, skills, interpersonal networks, and effective influence required to create sustained peace. Seeds of Peace’s inaugural summer began with 46 Israeli, Palestinian and Egyptian Seeds and has since grown into a year-round, multi-faceted leadership development and coexistence program with a network of nearly 5,000 graduates and educators from 22 nations around the world. INTERNATIONAL CAMP Every summer approximately 350 Seeds meet their historic ‘enemies’ face-to-face at the Seeds of Peace International Camp in Otisfield, Maine for a life-changing 3 ½ week session of coexistence, peace education, and conflict resolution training. For 90-minutes each day, Seeds are guided by professional facilitators in sharing real stories and exploring the most divisive issues of their respective conflicts. They listen to once-foreign viewpoints, challenge inherited prejudices, and promote cultural appreciation and mutual understanding. These crucial dialogue groups also participate in group challenge activities: physical and intellectual challenges that complement dialogue sessions by emphasizing cooperation, communication, and shared humanity. Facilitated Dialogue and Group Challenges are bolstered by daily camp activities- in the bunks, dining hall, theater, lake, and on the soccer fields and basketball courts- that are as typical as they are revolutionary. Free from the pressures and prejudices of their home communities, participants learn more than leadership and communication skills: they develop essential friendships and trust. REGIONAL PROGRAMMING When campers leave Maine, they know their work as peacemakers is just beginning. Although our Seeds face many challenges, including skepticism and hostility from friends and family, they are committed to their brave pledge of making the peace they experienced at Camp become a reality at home.
To build on the transformational Camp experience, Seeds of Peace provides a variety of regional and cross-cultural opportunities for graduate Seeds to remain engaged throughout their lives. Local and cross-border workshops, advanced dialogue sessions, community service and outreach projects, regional seminars, and global summits are just some of the many ways in which SOP participants not only continue to hone their skills and develop their relationships, but also promote constructive dialogue and collective peace-building in their respective communities.
