Every material used in the upper of a GORE-TEX® shoe is subject to the Wicking test. It is not only the GORE-TEX® lining that is crucial for the durable waterproofing of our shoes, but also the other materials used for the upper. These must be water repellent, because materials that absorb water carry moisture to the edge of the upper by capillary action, and in extreme cases to the inside of the shoe. That is why we test the shoe’s leather and foam, stitching and laces, to determine how much water they absorb.
Every component of the shoe is tested for breathability and climate comfort. We test all the materials that go into GORE-TEX® footwear for breathability and climate comfort. Artificial feet that can sweat like real ones are put into the shoes or boots, then placed in a climate chamber. We then measure water vapour escape and water retention levels at various temperatures.
GORE-TEX® footwear is tested as soon it comes off the production line. This test, patented by Gore ensures that only absolutely waterproof footwear reaches the shops. During the centrifugal test the boots are filled with water. It is not important whether water enters the shoe from the outside or leaves the shoe from the inside when testing if the shoe is waterproof. The boots are secured in a metal cylinder and rotated for either 30 or 60 minutes at high speed. The enormous centrifugal force pushes the water out towards the outside of the boot. Blotting paper is used to highlight any leaks. Every manufacturer of GORE-TEX® footwear tests 2 percent of their daily output using a centrifuge. If a leak is detected, the problem in the manufacturing process can be identified and fixed immediately. The advantage of this testing method: it’s very fast and doesn’t damage the boots which dry quickly.
100% waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® Performance comfort membrane
Waterproofing: 500 kilometres in wet conditions The Gore Walking Simulator tests the waterproofing of GORE-TEX® footwear. Test boots are placed on flexible artificial feet which are equipped with sensors that take up to 300,000 steps in a water bath. This is about the same as a 500 km hike across a wet meadow or through a stream. When moisture enters the shoe, the machine stops and an LED indicates where the leak is. This test is particularly suitable when testing for capillary action. A boot that is usually totally waterproof will become wet on the inside if the upper leather is thoroughly soaked and the water finds its way inside. This is why it is very important that the leather or upper material is water repellent. Boots that pass this vigorous test do in fact remain waterproof for many years.

The more demanding terrain you are in the more important it is that your shoes fit perfectly and therefore most of the Härkila boots are available in both whole and half sizes. The very large sizes are however excluded, as the large sizes will not experience the difference in the same way. The smaller feet you have, the bigger difference a half size will represent, while people with larger feet will not feel as big a difference.
Härkila uses the best hardware available: Hinged eyelets for closer fit, lace locking lugs ans speed lacing system, securing optimal fit and long durability. Härkila uses the best cow leather in nubuck or full-grain leather plus extra breathable suede leather available in 1.9 mm, 2.1 mm or 2.4 mm depending on style. Full-grain leather has a slightly glossy surface, and therefore scratches from branches, thorns and the like will be more visible.
