Description In my internship at AD+RG for just more than a year, I have worked on projects of multiple types and scale. From research to competition to design, I was mainly involved in six projects of different stages. Here are three that I selected based on duration and skills involved.

A 30-Classroom Primary School at Kai Tak Development Schemetic Design - Detail Design Description
Reponsibilities
The primary school is situated in Choi Hung Estate. It is a new campus where existing students and staffs would move into. Embodying the vividness from “Choi Hung” meaning rainbow, the project proposed to reinvigorate the edcuational environment of both the students and staff by introducing playful design elements and spatial configurations that would encourage interaction and a sense of community among its users. This project utilises MiC, Modular Integrated Construction, classrooms are prefabricated modular units to reduce cost and time for construction.

Master Planning and Concept Design for a School of Medicine and Affiliated Hospital in Shenzhen Tender Submission - Tender Interview Description
Reponsibilities
Integrating research, health and learning, the proposed design challenges the conventional funcional layout of a medical school. Through utilising the concept of human cells, the functional spaces and prgramme of the proposed design while having their own specific purposes, serve as integral parts of the whole campus. Public spaces inter-connect to each other and become a “Medical Vein” which forms the main spine and core of the entire Medi-Search development. This network of connectivity ultimately enhances the experience of patients, students and teachers.

Reponsibilities
On the basis of the hong kong design manual: barrier free access 2008, the objectives of the study are to formulate a strategy, with proposed measures with a view to creating an environment that promotes freedom of choice and independence, and respects the individual’s right to live in a full life with dignity, irrespective of differences in ability and age and facilitating users of different abilities to access buildings and services independently. Stakeholder engagements and webinars were held to collect opinions from various fields of industry to form a stronger foundation of strategy and recommendations.

Otaku are individuals that lock themselves in their room for a long period of time, they are not sociable and generally do not like interacting with other people. If given the choice, they would like to be left alone with their own business. They make a living through businesses done online.
Drinking Culture Local companies have a culture of inviting its employees to drink in bars after work. However, the salarymen do not necessarily enjoy hanging out with their employers after work and yet they do it out of courtesy. It is common to find them drunk at all corners of the streets during the night as they do not want to go with their colleagues. More fortunate salarymen would usually be alone at night.
Strategy The projects is a combination of residence and hotel units. We wanted to challenge the concept of community the otaku lacks and privacy the salarymen desires. 140 permanent units would be for the otaku, residents would have to negotiate with their neighbours when using any furniture while 40 portable units would serve the salarymen, allowing them to sleep in any spot they choose in the building.

Permanent Foldable Units
Everyone has a different idea of privacy. These are inflatables hotel guests would wear as their sleeping pods, inspired by the capsule hotels prominent in Japan. Guests would be put on these suits scattered along the pathways of the building and inflate them into sleeping pods at any spot, whether it is a dark corner or roof top of the building. A variety of spatial conditions with different parameters of privacy are designed for these guests to choose and sleep in. Giving them the privacy they desire while respecting the phenomenon of salarymen sleeping anywhere they want.
We want to challenge how far otakus would go to isolate themselves. In these permanent units, each otaku has their own unit but the furniture and facilities are all shared with their neighbours. Most of them are panels that fold down from the walls allowing the tenant to configure the unit to their own desire. However all of these panels would create openings in the walls which reveal the adjacent neighbour, moving in and out of their units would also require them to pass through other spaces, forcing them to negotiate and interact with the neighbours around. By creating their own space, they would have to invade others.

On the Edge Retreat and Lookout Point, Cabo da Roca, Portugal
Description The brief requires a look-out point and a retreat for an individual with respect to the context where the westernmost of Europe meets the Atlantic Ocean. The proposed design celebrates the contrast between the sturdiness of the cliff and ferocity of the sea and wind. Allowing the visitor and individual to experience the same site in two different languages.

The individual coming into this space would feel unconfortable. Most of the retreat is exposed to the seawind and rain. The bedroom and kitchen is visible from the look-outpoint, the individual while having an individual space does not have a lot of privacy.

Description Located at the mouth of the Pluit Reservoir, people in the Kampung Gedong Pompa have often been used as a scapegoat for the polluted water and thus flooding in the area. In violation of the 5m clearance required for riverbank inspection, they are constantly facing the pressure of being evicted while living in dreadful conditions. The project proposes to uplift some of the lost traditions among the people in the kampung area while improving their living conditions in hopes to infinitely delay the inevitable.

Flooding The site sits below sea level, during wet seasons from October to January, residents would face the threat of floods reaching as high as the first storey of buildings. Residents would either have to move they belongings to neighbour’s house or to the second floor. Food and medication is very limited.
Eviction The government blames the kampungs for flooding due to water pollution. A policy is set out to demolish all kampungs within 5m of the riverbank and evict its residents far away, they would have to find new jobs and adapt to new neighbourhoods. Some kampungs would “green” their village to prevent eviction.
Water Pollution With poor sewage systems, waste in the kampungs is often discarded into nearby rivers. The only way for the residents to access clean water is buying them outside of the village which cuts into a portion of their income which is barely enough for them to buy food or medicine.

Adding Plantation for Dye-making
To organise the functions, a two grid systems were used to put similar functions into groups to allow smooth operation of batik production. The public corridor faces the kampungs while the factory faces the main road.
Natural dyes for batiks come from the plantation grown nearby, these plantations double as a greenery communal space. When the plants are mature, they will be harvested and processed for dye making.

The site is lifted up to minimise disturbance to water flow at the canal underneath. By elevating different functions, theese spaces intersect with one another from above and below.
