The Word Detectives collection invites students to explore a wid through tier two vocabulary. Students are introduced to new words through unique and often humorous reading passages. They then strengthen their understanding by using their words to draw, act, create, and more. Students complete each lesson by writing an original piece incorporating new vocabulary words to respond to a given prompt.

Best Practices

Embed Lessons in narrative, informational, or opinion writing units. Each lesson is aligned to an ELA Common Core writing standard. Each reading passage and writing prompt can be used as supplementary material to a writing unit.

Let student discussion shine. Allow ample time for students to sketch and explain their drawings during the introduction. Word Detectives questions and prompts are designed to allow students to make personal connection and meaning.

Weave words into your routine. Reinforce acquisition of these new words with word walls, exit tickets, journal prompts, and more.
