LOOKING BACK TO THE PAST
“Female Portraits: Looking Back to the Past” by artist Séfora Camazano is a poignant collection of portraits featuring women from diverse nationalities, all of whom have endured some form of violence.
Created as a tribute to Valencian master
Joaquín Sorolla on the centenary of his passing in 2023, Séfora reimagines his works through her own artistic methodologies and techniques. She oe perspective and style, portraying these women as resilient, dignified figures who embody strength in the face of adversity.
By establishing a dialogue between the women in her portraits and those painted by Sorolla, Séfora challenges viewers to reflect on whether
society’s perception of women has truly evolved, despite the significant progress in women’s rights over the past century.

PHOTOGRAPHY
“Female Portraits: Migrants” is a project by artist Séfora Camazano, conceived during her research into the migration of women in Spain and the factors that compel them to leave their home countries.
This photography collection features 30 women from 15 different nationalities, representing diverse origins, ages, and cultures. What unites them is the violence they endured in their native countries, which became the driving force behind their decision to leave their lives behind. The collection highlights the global crisis of female migration. Despite the challenges they have faced, these women have allowed themselves to be photographed as they truly are, breaking away from the stereotypical image often associated with migrant women. They become visible through this project, sharing their stories and changing perspectives.

This work offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of these women, fostering empathy and understanding for their experiences. Their faces, which reflect adversity, strength, and resilience, also reveal their yearning to move beyond unbearable circumstances. Their gazes establish a dialogue with the viewer, creating a profound impact. Observers may find themselves reflected in these portraits, prompting them to recognize and confront uncomfortable realities that are often invisible but urgently need to be brought to light.
