By Dr. Richard D. Miller Published on the SEG website. Link: seg.org/Updates Dear friends in the geosciences, As SEG President, I have an opportunity and obligation to elevate awareness of social inequality or bias that impacts or could impact our geoscience community. That awareness must be the catalyst for critical conversations that facilitate meaningful actions and change. A great deal of healing is necessary across all nations and peoples to move as a unified global community past racism and discrimination. SEG’s mission is to connect the world of applied geophysics. Those global connections will be meaningful only in a safe space without racism, bigotry, or discrimination of any kind. SEG must stand in full and unwavering support of all victimized people worldwide, especially our geoscience colleagues and friends. The burden carried by those facing systemic discrimination is difficult to imagine for those of us who have not walked in their shoes. Acts of violence and hatred against members of marginalized communities must come to an end if there is to be any hope the human race will reach its full potential. SEG strives to be an inclusive society that exercises no tolerance for any acts of racism or inequality and promotes an atmosphere of diversity, acceptance, and inclusion. The Society celebrates people from all walks of life and condemns discrimination of any kind. Our members and friends share core values of respect and equity as we work together to advance the science and application of geophysics. SEG leadership will continue efforts to build and support accepting and respectful communities in which all geoscientists can thrive, fostering equitable and inclusive scientific practice, free of any discriminatory practices within our Society family and the geoscience community at large.

Near-surface geophysics for the future
SEG LA RAC Newsletter
By Chester Weiss and Baishali Roy Text previously published in the President’s Page of The Leading Edge, Volume 39, Issue 5 (May 2020). Link: https://library.seg.org/doi/10.1190/tle39050304.1 This marks the 10th year since the SEG Executive Committee, realizing the growing importance of near-surface geophysics in addressing humanitarian needs, approved the formation of a Near Surface Task Force. After four years of dedicated efforts by that task force to advance and promote the science, technology, and professional practice of geophysics as applied to near-surface problems, the SEG Near-Surface Geophysics Technical Section (NSTS) was established by the SEG Board of Directors during its October 2014 meeting following submission of applications by 50 Active SEG near-surface geophysics members. The first chair of the NSTS was John Lane Jr. The membership of the technical section has grown since its inception and includes individuals from a global and diverse community. According to the 2020 NSTS vision statement, “The SEG's Near-Surface Geophysics Technical Section is the leading community for applied nearsurface geophysics, as measured through its offerings of professional development, its innovative research on methods and theory behind near-surface geophysics, and in applying these to evolving societal needs.” The current SEG Board of Directors continues to stress the importance of the near-surface geophysical community's role in solving humanitarian challenges and is committed to seeking new opportunities for the NSTS. The advent of new sensor and data-analytics technologies brings new opportunities to prove the upper veneer of the earth's subsurface. Perhaps the greatest commonality among activities loosely grouped under the label “nearsurface geophysics” is their focus on a particular depth region of the earth rather than a singular method (e.g., seismology) or scientific discipline (e.g., sedimentology). As such, the near-surface geophysics community is notable for its inherently interdisciplinary approach to studying this region, requiring knowledge and acumen with a broad spectrum of geophysical methods, analysis techniques, and well-grounded rock sense. Although an exact definition for the depth extent of the “near surface” remains elusive, it is relatively straightforward to find examples of interesting and challenging geoscience problems that comfortably fit within this label.

Within SEG, what we refer to as near-surface geophysics commonly captures efforts in engineering geophysics such as infrastructure monitoring, site characterization, determination of design constraints, and assessment of geohazards. Such studies support the demands on our expanding urban centers under evolving human migratory patterns and population growth. The growth of socalled smart cities is an example of such engineering applications. Groundwater studies, including ground- and surface-water interactions, also fit comfortably within the near-surface label and provide rich opportunities for the complex science that lies at the nexus of classical geophysics, geochemistry, and climate science. Whether the specific question is one of responsible aquifer management under uncertain climate stressors and human demands or quantification

quantification of risk due to anthropogenic contamination and activities, these groundwater studies directly address mounting societal pressures for access to clean and sustainable water. Recent geophysical studies revealing a massive freshwater aquifer off the northeast coast of the United States point to the importance of coastal geophysics as another theme falling within the scope of near-surface geophysics. With roughly 40% of the world's population living within 100 km of a coast, improved understanding of saltwater/freshwater interactions on groundwater systems and the dynamics of an evolving coastline under measurably evolving storm patterns and population pressures is another area in which SEG's near-surface community is taking innovation nurtured — and in many cases, developed — by the energy industry and making a broader impact. Near-surface geophysics has mobilized technology development through its increasing use of unmanned aerial systems (drones) for rapid, lowcost reconnaissance and time-lapse monitoring projects. Whether through high-resolution photogrammetry or other geophysical data, such a magnetic fields, these agile mobile data collection platforms are driving a future in which small, inexpensive, low-power sensors ultimately will find their way into every geophysicist's toolkit. As a final example, the near-surface community has traditionally been the home for humanitarian and border-security geophysics, whether through development of active surveillance technologies along international boundaries, tactical awareness in conflict regions, or ordnance remediation in deconflicted sites. While there are other themes to point out, such as agricultural, archaeological, and forensic geophysics, we see that our working definition of the near surface — if we were forced to put numbers on it — is the upper 1 km or so of the earth. More importantly
importantly, however, we see that the scope of activities captured by our spatiocentric label is equally focused on impacts our geoscience has on society and the inescapable coupling between human activity and the planet on which we live. As the sole technical section of SEG, the NSTS is a product of the evolving demographics of Society membership and cultural shifts within the exploration-geophysics community. The NSTS comprises a blend of experience, with a strong and energetic early-career population working closely with midcareer and senior professionals throughout academe, industry, and government laboratories. Whether it is through SEG's Geoscientists Without Borders® program, a broadening sense of the many ways exploration geophysics helps society through sustainable and responsible growth, or access to and stewardship of natural resources, the NSTS embraces a big-picture ethos toward ensuring a safe and secure future for all global citizens, as evidenced by its growing fraction of the SEG population and its representation across gender, ethnic, and identity groups. NSTS members are, without question, not simply a group of scientists passionate about some region of the geologic earth; they are scientists passionate about people and the earth on which we all live. Our relationship with the planet may prove to be the defining force of the future. As communities, economies, and nations seek to find an equilibrium with nature and its resources, near-surface and applied geophysicists will continue to play an even more vital role. For decades, exploration geophysicists have excelled in finding and managing fossil-fuel resources. Today, their vast knowledge and plethora of tools also can provide solutions to a broader array of problems and to emerging nearsurface, environmental, and groundwater issues. To all those seeking a career in applied geophysics, here is your opportunity. ■

Spreading geoscience knowledge during the quarantine in Brazil By Rodrigo Brust SEG Rural Geophysics S.C. –Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro SEG SC - Brazil Founded in January 2020, the SEG Rural Geophysics S.C. has the goal of spreading Geophysics knowledge throughout Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, in which has been impacting
impacting not only in the academic area but also in schools and in the community around the university. Unfortunately, even before the first week of classes started, the COVID-19 pandemic spread all over the world and affecting severely Brazil. Due that, the school year was cancelled. This event brought many ideas of how this period at home could be interesting, in terms of developing lectures and activities. One of these ideas was making webinars about geophysics applied to geoscience studies, and also bring a closer partnership with others student chapters not just in Brazil, but in Latin America. Since the quarantine has started the SEG Rural Geophysics S.C. has streamed 4 lives, with more than 26K minutes of visualization and approximately 7.3K people reached. Until now a partnership with UFPR SEG Student Chapter and UFRuralRJ AAPG Student Chapter was made, always looking forward to the spread of geoscience knowledge during the quarantine, and bringing new horizons, beyond the heartbreaking news on TV and social media. While the shown situation will not be able to return normal conditions, at least in the near future, the group is looking others student chapters and lectures to keep the schedule of live streams. Rafael Santos, president of SEG Rural Geophysics S.C. said that “to be part of the executive committee is very challenging! We have to try to keep a good harmony among us to make things work well, for example good communication is essential. Although it is a hard task to organize events, getting anxious whether everything will be fine in the end or not, our hearts fulfill of happiness when a lecture finishes and people give congratulate us. Furthermore, it is very gratifying to take scientific knowledge into people's lives and expire them to study more about each affair we introduce to them”. In times of crisis, opportunities also arise. It is an opportunity to take a break and rethink plans, to have in mind what we want to achieve and the place we intend to reach in the future. We believe that it’s time to get to know ourselves better, to reinvent ourselves and to accept new challenges. Thus, it would be no different for the Geoscientific Student Society (GSS) at Universidade Federal Fluminense. Our Student Chapter, like everyone else, found itself in a completely different scenario in this pandemic. We understood that it was time to go to a next level with the dissemination of content, bringing even more learning opportunities for our academic community and new students from the Department of Geology and Geophysics (GGO). For that, we internally restructured our team to adapt each other to this new reality, working on the motivation, the engagement of members and the understanding of our role as a student chapter. As a way to improve our work, virtual meetings are being held with new ideas for future projects and events, for example, we organized a chronogram for a program we call “Geophysical Talk
“Geophysical Talk” where we invite geoscientists to remotely talk about their research. Also, we activated our marketing even more by posting more content on our social networks, seeking interaction with students, especially new ones who are not yet familiar with the course.
Our members during virtual meeting.
During this unpredictable period, we are promoting incredible lectures and courses conducted by professors and renowned professionals of industry, many of which are offered by SEG, virtually and freely available. Also, we are supporting the department, by promoting virtual academic activities of our professors and the research groups of the GGO, which are the Exploratory Interpretation and Reservoir Characterization Group (GIECAR) and the Seismic Inversion and Imaging Group (GISIS), the latter coordinated by our chapter’s advisor, PhD. Marco Antônio Cetale Santos. In this difficult pandemic time, it is important that we remain calm and be kind to ourselves, each one has its own rhythm, and everything will be fine. It is normal not to be motivated 100% of the time, but it is also important to better use it with self-development to get out of the crisis as a better person. Studying, learning, and doing network is essentials keys, but we also believe that it is crucial to take care of our physical and mental health. And what will the future look like? Uncertain, yes! The only certainty we have is that nothing will be the same, not in a bad way, but different. With this letter, we would like to bring a message of motivation and care. Finally, we want to encourage people to help each other always as possible, follow the recommendations of the public organizations of the

How UERJ Geophysical Society Student Chapter is facing quarantine By Luiz Felipe Moraes State University of Rio de Janeiro Geophysical Society Brazil For us quarantine began in March 3rd, it was the day we received the News that activities at the university was suspended for 15 days, and soon more those 15 days became what is now three months inmate we face now. At the time we were in full swing, talking with companies and proposing partnership for new activities, starting to plan our 4th workshop og applied geophysics, but with the arrived of the new virus all of our planning was interrupt. It was a week discussing what we could do without presential activities, and soon the idea of doing Instagram’s lives
lives came. Our proposal was present the geophysics methods in an informal and fast way, captivating the public during an hour of conversation with a specialist. Our lives that happens every Thursdays at 7:00 pm took proportions that we didn’t expect. We already have eight lives exhibited, it has been until now eight weeks of uninterrupted programming presenting various topics, from presenting the GPR method to discussing the day of work of the geologist in a company. Lives, in addition to being our main proposal of activity during quarantine, also contributed to the growth of the chapter. Our instagram that once had approximately 300 followers, is now almost completing a thousand and continues to gain followers every day.
