Guadalupe County Sheriff seeks State district judge looks to re-election during March Primary return to bench for third term sheriff's office back in 92, I felt that the sheriff's office was a strong progressive sheriff's office and when I first decided to seek election, I wanted to continue that and we worked hard and expanded on that and with the fast growing county that Guadalupe County is, we've met the needs of the people," said Zwicke.

Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Guadalupe County's top law enforcement officer wants another four years in office. Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke will be seeking re-election in the upcoming Republican March Primary. Zwicke initially took over the reigns of the office in Jan. 2001 upon the retirement of former Sheriff Melvin Harborth. Zwicke says he just wants to continue the work that has helped grow and shape the operation that exist today. "There is still a lot of work to be done in the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office and we've come along way. When I started with the

sheriff's association and some of the committees to get laws changed and just make it better for the people," said Zwicke.

Zwicke says changes in technology and in law enforcement over the years have no doubt come with their challenges. State Distric Judge William "Bill" Old By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera & Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- A state district judge is seeking another term in office. William "Bill" Old is seeking reelection for Judge of the 25th Judicial District. Old hopes to again pick up the Republican nomination during the March 3 Primary Election. Old says it's been his honor and privilege to serve the people of Guadalupe, Gonzales, Lavaca and Colorado Counties and wants to continue moving the courtroom forward.

the past seven years, we've been successful. Just this last legislative session getting a new district court. That goes into effect Jan. 1, 2021. That is to primarily have civil cases because we have had a 38 percent increase in the civil cases since I've been on the bench. I want to help the new judge come on board. They are going to be appointed by the Governor. I worked hard. I drafted the legislation for that. I appeared before the commissioners court -- got them to endorse the idea -and so I'm feeling vested in that. That's also going to free up a lot of my time. I won't be doing as much civil. I will continue to do some civil but there are some things that we need with respect to specialty courts primarily a felony veterans court. We have a misdemeanor veterans court and a mental health court. I think those are needs that we have in the county and I would like to see those come to fruition," said Old.

Old was first elected in 2012 following a three-way race in that year's Republican Primary and runoff. Without a Democrat in the race, Old "Well, there's things that I was sworn in the following haven't accomplished still. In January.

He is now currently serving his second term as judge. Old says he not only has the experience but has already demonstrated a proven track record of carrying out the law. "I do tell people a lot of times you don't know who your district judge is and quite honestly, you don't want to know who your district judge is because we hear felony cases. We hear civil cases, family law cases. My experience is what matters in this case. I've been a lawyer and a judge for 32 years. I've was a trial lawyer for 25 years doing both civil as well as criminal cases prior to taking the bench. You need that experience being in court on a daily basis. Since being on the bench, I've resolved 10,000 cases. I've had thousands of hearings between my lawyer days and my judge days, I've tried over or presided over that many and so I'm very hardworking and very aggressive in getting the dockets under control and we've done a great job in the last seven years getting the dockets under control," said Old. Sheriff Zwicke campaigns for another term SHERIFF, continued from page 1 Upon taking office, Zwicke says he immediately was faced with the opening of a newly expanded 600 bed adult jail facility. He says not only has the jail brought in over $35.5 million in revenue but it remains a role model for other jail facilities across the state. Zwicke says he is also proud of the Animal Control office and its efforts to help handle the "overwhelming need for animal services" throughout the county. "In 2003, we had our animal control shelter. I felt as a taxpayer that we could do a lot more

efficiently with the amount of money that Guadalupe County taxpayers were spending so we took that over in 2003 and expanded on that and in 2009, with the help of commissioners court, we were able to build that new shelter and it's been working good. We follow the state law. I don't agree with everything with some of the incidents that we've done. I wouldn't raise my animals that way but they meet the state guidelines and it's hard for people to understand that we can't just do what we want to do. We have to follow the state law. If you look at our euthanize rate, with the dogs that we pick up throughout Guadalupe County, we are at a 94 percent redemption rate. That six percent is mainly the feral dogs -- the wild dogs here in

Guadalupe County -- that we really don't want back in society for safety reasons," said Zwicke. Despite several accomplishments over the years, Zwicke says it's the partnerships with the community and the other agencies that have afforded his office and dedicated employees the ability to meet the needs of residents. He says even after so many years, there's still plenty to tackle and hopes for another opportunity to keep working "There is still a lot of work to be done. I

enjoy my job. This isn't a part-time job for me. I probably work 60 to 70 hours a week on average. It's in my blood. I just want to continue. I appreciate the partnership and the continued support of our citizens and I'm asking them to give me that vote in the next coming election to continue to do the job that we are doing," said Zwicke. Zwicke will face challenger Jimmy Harless, Guadalupe County Constable Pct. 2, for the position during the Tuesday, March 3 Primary Election. Early voting for the race begins on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

State district judge seeks re-election JUDGE, continued from page 1 Old believes understanding the law is just as important as understanding the everyday lives of those who come into his courtroom. "One of the things is just being able to be a good listener. I don't always agree with one side or the other. Obviously, I have to make a decision one way or the other but I let people have their say in court. I realize and I understand that a lot of times, that's that one person's day in court and they just want

to be heard and while I may not agree with them and I may not rule in their favor, I do my best to let them be heard and let them say their peace and so I think that's an important skill. I have good days and bad days just like anybody else but I keep an even keel and even demeanor -- they call it judicial temperament -- for all cases and I'm complimented frequently on the fact that I do listen well. I make informed decisions and that I listen to the parties and their attorneys," said Old.

“We’ll get those little devils!”

Over the past six and a half years, he says he's not only provided fair and impartial justice but has worked well with those throughout the various counties. "The key is the experience. It really is and 32 years of experience says a lot and again, it's 32 years in the same areas and in the same types of cases that are practiced in my court on a daily basis. I could go on and on about the experience and I have the temperament and like I said I work well in all four of my

counties with the staff in those four counties," said Old. Old faces challenger, Jacqueline Phillips Ott, a Guadalupe County prosecutor for the position. Old and Ott are the only two candidates appearing on the ballot. The Republican Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3. The winner of the primary election would essentially earn the position as there are no candidates for the state district judge position on the Democratic ballot in November.

Matadors outlast Rockets for third straight district win Twitero has topped the 20-point mark in three consecutive games, and is on pace to achieve the rare statistical feat of shooting better than 50 percent on total field goal attempts, 40 percent on threes, and 80 percent at the free throw line. “He’s really gaining confidence, and the kids are looking for him,” Seguin head coach Dwayne Gerlich said. “He gets outside that three-point line, he’s coming off a screen, and he wants the ball. You can tell that corner three right now is his shot. We feel real confident when it goes up, it’s going in. He’s going to be a big threat down the stretch here.” Joseph Vela added 16 points for Seguin, all in the second half. Christopher James hit a pair of threes and finished with 13. R.J. Acuna contributed nine points, Tyson Coleman and Kaleb McCann two apiece, and Matthew Doege one on a free throw.

as 14 before settling for the 12-point win. Gerlich credited his team for weathering the storm after allowing a desperate Kennedy bunch to stick around. “We gave them confidence, but I was real proud of the kids in the second half,” Gerlich said. “We kind of buckled down a little bit, the defense kind of picked up, but we did get some layups and we finally hit some stuff that we were supposed to, and you know, a district win is a district win whether it’s one point or 20 points, we’ll take it.” Lopez, who came in averaging just under 20 points per game, led the Rockets with 16 points, but he only hit one three other than his halftime buzzer beater. “We kind of face guarded him and denied him the ball, and C.J. James and R.J. Acuna did a great job on him, not letting him get shots off,” Gerlich noted. The Matadors seek their fourth straight district win Tuesday when Kerrville-Tivy visits Goldie Harris Gym at 6:30 p.m.

Seguin) - Senior forward Gerrit Twitero burried five threes and matched his season high with 23 points Friday to help Seguin even up its District 26-5A record at 3-3 with a 66-54 win over San Antonio-Kennedy at Goldie Harris Gym.

The visiting Rockets gave the Matadors all they could handle for the better part of three quarters. Kennedy forward Lorenzo Clark beat the first quarter buzzer to tie the contest at 15-all. All-District guard Cliff Lopez did likewise with a three at the end of the second period to cut Seguin’s halftime lead to 29-28.

The win is Seguin’s fourth straight overall and lifts the Matadors over the .500 mark on the season at 12-11. Kennedy drops to 0-7 in district play, 4-20 overall.

After briefly trailing in the third quarter, the Matadors surged to a 45-39 lead heading into the fourth. Seguin carried the momentum into the final frame and led by as many

Bieber Battles Debilitating Lyme Disease

UVA Heath System Use Video Technology To Help Cancer Patients

(Ridgefield, CT) -- Pop star Justin Bieber has taken to social media to announce he's battling Lyme disease. Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, a Lyme Disease expert in Connecticut, says the tick-borne illness can cause severe joint pain, heart infections and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder or sudden onset of rage. The average person sees five to seven doctors before getting the correct diagnosis. Lyme Disease symptoms often include a red bullseye rash, fever, chills, body aches, swollen glands and neck stiffness but patients given antibiotics early on generally make a full recovery.

(Charlottesville, VA) -- The University of Virginia Health System is using video technology to help cancer patients in rural areas across the state. The telemedicine cancer survivorship intervention connects a nurse to former cancer patients to answer questions and offer advice on how to cope with cancer-induced stress. The video calls can range from financial discussions to sleeping problems to level of pain. About 20 patients have already taken advantage of the intervention and the team hopes to increase the number of cancer survivors who use it.

Charges Dropped Against Only State Employee Fired In Flint Water Crisis

Prescription Drug Label Possible In CA (Sacramento, CA) -- The nation's first ever state-based prescription drug label could be created in California. A generic drug label is part of Governor Gavin Newsom's budget as his office says there would be more competition if it is enacted. Newsom said California is taking on the high price of health care with the proposal that would force manufacturers to offer a drug at a cost that's as low as any place around the world. Some generic drugs could be made on the state's behalf as well.

(Flint, MI) -- The criminal case against former Michigan Department of Environmental Quality official Liane Shekter-Smith is being tossed. She was the only state employee fired over the Flint water crisis and had reached a plea deal last year with the state. Shekter-Smith's defense attorney says she's happy to put it behind her and will now fight to get her job back with what is now the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. Shekter-Smith headed up the DEQ's Office of Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance.

Q: Can I prune my frozen plants now? A: As much as you may want to clean off those unsightly dead leaves, don’t. First of all, if you prune away the dead parts of the plant, you are exposing portions that may still be alive; another freeze could kill that new portion too. Second, according to Calvin Finch, leaving the frozen portions until late February before pruning provides a benefit for birds and other wildlife as it increases their chances of surviving the winter. Finch adds that waiting to prune citrus is especially important as you won’t know until spring which buds and stems will survive. My satsuma seems to be especially hardy as two freezes to 25 degrees didn’t even burn a leaf. If you are planning to plant new fruit trees, give a thought to planting some of the hardier fruit trees. Doug Welsh, in his Texas Garden Almanac, gives a list of fruit crops from the least to the most difficult to grow. The list goes from blackberries, figs, citrus, pears, pecans, grapes, persimmons, apples, and plums, to peaches, the most difficult. Remember that many factors make up this list: Texas soils, chilling requirements, climate, insects and diseases, pest management, training and pruning. I personally grow figs, citrus and pears without difficulty. The fruit I have not tried is persimmon and would be interested in hearing from someone who has.

Q: When do we plant roses? A: Now is a good time. Roses are in at the local nurseries. I looked through the types available and they include hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, and a few miniatures and climbers. One of my favorite roses, Belinda’s Dream, caught my eye. Not only is this a beautiful pink shrub rose that blooms in the spring, summer and fall, it is also designated an “Earth-Kind” rose by Texas AgriLife. The rose was introduced in 1992, is five feet high and wide, has very double blooms, and best of all, is much more disease and soil tolerant than modern hybrid teas. Another available rose that caught my eye is Angel Face which is a hybrid cross floribunda. What makes it interesting to me is that it is mauve lavender and has a strong sweet citrus fragrance. This rose was introduced in 1968. It is hardy in our area although one should keep an eye out for aphids. Remember that all roses do best in full sun and welldrained soil.

Q: Are onion sets available locally in the Seguin area? I am looking for 1015. A: They are indeed. According to Texas A&M AgriLife, the plants can be planted threefourth of an inch deep and three inches apart from now till early February. Spread fertilizer into the top 3 inches of soil. After the plants grow five or six leaves, apply fertilizer again. Water once a week. Keep weeds removed. Bulbs should be produced between May and July. AgriLife reminds us that the onions are ready when the main stem begins to weaken and fall. Leave the onions on top of the soil to dry for one or two days then bring them in and store in a dry airy place.
