Guadalupe County Youth Show Livestock, Homemakers Show to begin on Wednesday

New Co-Secretary Debra Reiley says the 79th annual program is reporting an increase in participation as compared to last year and to other most recent years. Reiley says participants represent the various high schools and districts in the county. "Our numbers are actually up this year. We have a little over about 1,474 in entries and that represents about 1,400 kids which is over 100 kids from last year so we are really excited about having new participants this year. Those kids come from all over Guadalupe County so

they are going to represent Seguin High School and the Seguin Independent School District, Marion Independent School District, Navarro Independent School District and then we pull from the west side of the county which is Cibolo Creek which represents Steele and Clemens and their elementary (schools) in that area. Some of our kids are in FFA programs and some of our kids are represented by their local 4H programs which are anywhere from Santa Clara, New Berlin, Seguin, Marion. There are 4H programs spread out throughout the entire county. That's our kids and we are excited and ready," said Reiley.

The Voice of Seguin Today

Longest tenured firefighter retires from Seguin Fire/EMS Department By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Jimmy Vogel, Battalion Fire Chief with the Seguin Fire/EMS Department stood proudly in the center of the Central Fire Station Friday afternoon as he signed off from duty for the very last time. Fire dispatch responded, "The city's Battalion Chief Jimmy Vogel has proudly served the citizens of Seguin for the last 40 years. He's been an exceptional leader and role model to his fellow fire fighters and community members. Today after 5 p.m. service and on behalf of the Seguin Fire Department and the city of Seguin, we thank you and wish you a happy retirement."

Reiley says, of course, the increase is both with the livestock and homemakers divisions. Reiley says today, there are all sorts of ways that students can be a part of the youth show.

Prior to his radio sign-off, Vogel appeared from underneath the rising fire station bay doors only to be surprised by friends, family and his firefighting family -- all who gathered to wish him well following a 40 year long career with the Seguin Fire Department.

Annual youth show auction slated for Saturday at fairgrounds GYCS, continued from page 1 "Knowing that we have kids that can participate -- you don't have to have an animal to participate and I think that's what is drawing one more kid. They can do baked goods. They can do Ag mechanic projects. They can do photography so you don't have to have a place to store an animal anymore although the animals are a big part of the program, I think our draw now in getting participants is that they are allowed to do other things too and that's really been nice. I think as a committee and as a board, the more we can get kids involved in things like the youth show and the agriculture industry -- this is the future. These are kids that are our future of our whole county and it's really important that they get involved,” said Reily. Reiley says this week is the finale for those kids who have worked hard all year long. She says there are so many benefits for being a part of this long standing tradition. "My own two personal children went through it and they learned a lot of life skills. They have to

learn how to take care of something besides themselves and as a family, we were all involved and we worked hard and I'm excited as a member of the board because my entire family now is giving back. My husband is the facilities director. My son is on the steer committee and Megan and I have taken over as secretary so all four of us are highly involved this week so that makes me happy as a parent to that they've come back to give to something that gave to them so much," said Reiley. The child, however, doesn't normally go at it alone. Reiley says the youth show is often times a family affair and that's why she believes the show and it's importance continues to grow each and every year. "As a family, you are involved. Our kids, when they were younger, they couldn't get their animals down to even show and they didn't know how to clip and they didn't know how to feed correctly so as they grew in the organization through FFA and 4H, our family was really involved and I wouldn't have it any other way. We have made so many good friends working

with the youth show program and of course, my husband's family is in the farming and ranching business anyway so agriculture is really important to us as a family but those ties and those binds -- that we've met with people -- those are lifelong friendships and that's why we are giving back now. That's why it was so important for us to be involved. Both of my kids went to Texas A&M and if it hadn't been for the youth show and the scholarship money that they got from there, they would have student loans and they don't. It's been a nice way for them to give back to this show because they benefited a lot from it," said Reiley.

a project. A complete schedule of events and additional buyer information can be found at www.gcys.org.

Both the Homemakers Auction and Premium livestock auction will be held on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. with registration. The premium sale (contributing $500 or more) will also include a buyer's hospitality buffet starting at 11 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., showmanship winners and buckle donors will be announced followed by opening ceremonies at 11:50 a.m. and the Premium Auction beginning right at noon in the fairground's dance slab. Battalion Chief surprised with retirement ceremony at local fire house VOGEL, continued from page 1 Serenaded with bag pipes, Vogel celebrated the end of a long fire fighting history - a history that also names him the longest tenured employee in the history of the department. Vogel says he appreciates all those who came out to wish him well. "I knew they had something planned but I

was like, 'oh, God, what is this going to be?' It's kind of bittersweet. That was a long time coming but I'm glad it's hear. I'm glad my retirement is here but I'm going to miss these people. They've been a part of my life for a longtime," said Vogel.

ever known so it's the best that I know of," laughs Vogel." I'd put them against anybody. It's been a good department. The city, itself, has been very good to me and my family so I'm happy as I can be," said Vogel.

Vogel says retiring from the fire house is more than just saying goodbye to a job.

Vogel also says the Seguin Fire/EMS Department is unmatched and would put it up against anyone else.

"It's all about making sure that we as a group, the fire department, take care of

Q: Can I prune my frozen plants now? A: As much as you may want to clean off those unsightly dead leaves, don’t. First of all, if you prune away the dead parts of the plant, you are exposing portions that may still be alive; another freeze could kill that new portion too. Second, according to Calvin Finch, leaving the frozen portions until late February before pruning provides a benefit for birds and other wildlife as it increases their chances of surviving the winter. Finch adds that waiting to prune citrus is especially important as you won’t know until spring which buds and stems will survive. My satsuma seems to be especially hardy as two freezes to 25 degrees didn’t even burn a leaf. If you are planning to plant new fruit trees, give a thought to planting some of the hardier fruit trees. Doug Welsh, in his Texas Garden Almanac, gives a list of fruit crops from the least to the most difficult to grow. The list goes from blackberries, figs, citrus, pears, pecans, grapes, persimmons, apples, and plums, to peaches, the most difficult. Remember that many factors make up this list: Texas soils, chilling requirements, climate, insects and diseases, pest management, training and pruning. I personally grow figs, citrus and pears without difficulty. The fruit I have not tried is persimmon and would be interested in hearing from someone who has.

Q: When do we plant roses? A: Now is a good time. Roses are in at the local nurseries. I looked through the types available and they include hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, and a few miniatures and climbers. One of my favorite roses, Belinda’s Dream, caught my eye. Not only is this a beautiful pink shrub rose that blooms in the spring, summer and fall, it is also designated an “Earth-Kind” rose by Texas AgriLife. The rose was introduced in 1992, is five feet high and wide, has very double blooms, and best of all, is much more disease and soil tolerant than modern hybrid teas. Another available rose that caught my eye is Angel Face which is a hybrid cross floribunda. What makes it interesting to me is that it is mauve lavender and has a strong sweet citrus fragrance. This rose was introduced in 1968. It is hardy in our area although one should keep an eye out for aphids. Remember that all roses do best in full sun and welldrained soil.

Q: Are onion sets available locally in the Seguin area? I am looking for 1015. A: They are indeed. According to Texas A&M AgriLife, the plants can be planted threefourth of an inch deep and three inches apart from now till early February. Spread fertilizer into the top 3 inches of soil. After the plants grow five or six leaves, apply fertilizer again. Water once a week. Keep weeds removed. Bulbs should be produced between May and July. AgriLife reminds us that the onions are ready when the main stem begins to weaken and fall. Leave the onions on top of the soil to dry for one or two days then bring them in and store in a dry airy place.

(Philadelphia, PA) -- One billion people worldwide suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, and having a fat tongue could be a key reason for snoring, choking and gasping periodically during the night, ruining your sleep and possibly your health. Penn Medicine sleep specialist Dr. Richard Schwab says reducing the fat in your tongue will improve your sleep apnea. Obesity is a key risk factor for the condition, and a previous study by Schwab and his team had found obese people with obstructive sleep apnea had considerably larger tongues than obese people without the condition. The new study found you can trim down your fatty tongue as you lose overall body fat. Schwab added that the finding may open up new avenues of treatment that focus on reducing tongue size, such as cold sculpting currently being used on stomach fat.
