an emergency order to implement a ban should conditions worsen. Pinder says the tool used to determine the trigger point of implementing a burn ban is over the threshold typically used to warrant a ban. However, he stated his suggestion for a ban was only a proposal and that the court had the final say.He says grass fires are still being reported in the area and wanted to make sure the court knew about any and all threats that currently existed. Plus, with no commissioners court meeting scheduled for next week, Pinder wanted to again bring the item to the table for consideration. Among those who also hesitated in ordering a burn ban was Commissioner Pct. 1 Greg Seidenberger. Seidenberger says he knows, firsthand, the personal impact that ordering a burn ban has on those in the county. See BURNBAN, page 2

Guadalupe County warns residents to use caution during outdoor burning
BURNBAN, continued from page 1 "I want people to know that we trust them. We think that they are educated. We think that they are responsible and we think they will conduct any burns especially ag burns which is what I’m interested in -- they do it responsibly --they do it carefully and I really think that we should trust the people's judgement to do this. I have a lot of constituents who do have agriculture interests and are burning currently -- pecan orchards and other places. We are clearing brush. We are picking up limbs. I personally am. My orchard always has especially with this wind, a lot of dead limbs are on the ground and I'd be picking up and burning so I think with this weather, with this fog, with this dampness and most of the people that I know have a spot in which they burn and they have either a disc around it or they have no grass there or no
other hazards to it so I think we trust our people to be responsible. I think it's a good decision for the court to postpone the burn ban and allow the people to continue, those that need to, to burn," said Seidenberger.
a burn ban on, be very careful because we do have a lot of fuel to ignite a fire right now because we have had dry wet, dry wet and so everybody out there, if you are going to burn, please watch your fires, be careful, be vigilant," said Cope.
Commissioner Pct. 4 Judy Cope says unfortunatly, whatever is ordered still won't put a definite end to the fires. Like Seidenberger, Cope says each citizen has a responsibility to keep up with an outdoor burn ordinance and just be careful everyday.
Kutscher says not moving forward with a burn ban at this time doesn't mean that one couldn't go into effect here soon. But again because rain is in the forecast, Kutscher will continue to work closely with Pinder in monitoring conditions each and every day. He says there has to be a balance in making a decision that impacts a lot of people.
"We are always going to have some fires. We are always going to have that person who steps away and goes 'I'm coming right back' and gets tied up somewhere else and they should be watching the fire so anytime, anybody calls me, I also remind them that although we are saying, we don't have
Despite the rain chances this weekend, residents are reminded that there is still plenty of dry grass and caution is advised. They are also reminded that ban or no ban, there is no burning during high winds.
Thief arrested for stealing money from area sports complex (Seguin) -- A local thief found his way behind bars after running off with just under $2,000 in cash from an area gym.
Guadalupe County Sheriff's Investigators says the incident was reported on Saturday in the 2800 block of Cordova Road.
William "Trey" Schmidt
They say when deputies arrived, they were told that a man who was later identified as William "Trey" Schmidt was captured on video surveillance -- he was seen entering the sports complex and leaving with the

cash.
They say Schmidt was later located in Seguin near the McDonalds on Court Street by one of the complainants. Deputies arrived in the area and took Schmidt into custody without incident for the theft. Once arrested, Schmidt confessed to the deputies that he had taken the money, but had not spent any of it. All the money was recovered by deputies and has been returned to the owners. Schmidt remains in custody on a $4,000 bond. He has been charged with theft of property over $750 but under $2,500.

Guadalupe County United Way shares more on annual campaign CMC Steel-Texas among largest contributors Services and the Irma Lewis Outdoor Leaning Center. I found all of those just by reading articles in the paper and I contacted them and asked if they'd be interested in applying for funding and all three of them were approved in addition to two others," said
UNITED, continued from page 1 Hargrave says CMC and Minigrip, again are just a few of the big companies that step up to the plate each year. She says others like HEB and Caterpillar also continue to make a difference -- a difference noted in the accomplishment of this year's goal. That difference this year can be seen with the addition of new agencies that will be provided funding by the United Way. "I was hoping to get $305,000 in contributions. We are 114 percent over that goal (or $363,000) and we are still getting contributions and (they) will be posted to the 2019 campaign because usually they come in through the middle of February. It just sometimes takes a lot for them to get to us," said Hargrave. Hargrave says being able to extend its list of
partner agencies only means more people being helped. "Just because we are able to help them, that means they can help more people. They can help more people, approve more people because those are the ones that actually do all the work out there. I'm just trying to get the funds to do it so it's good to talk to people because they
don't know what United Way does and I can't speak for anybody but this United Way is completely incorporated on its own. It's not affiliated with any other United Way so everything we raise, stays right here," said Hargrave. Hargrave says she's pleased to extend funding to three organizations that have a direct impact with children.
"Every organization that we are adding this year, they all evolve around children and family and one of the biggest ones that I'm very passionate about is the TruLight 127, the foster Village and I actually knew when I read the newspaper everyday, that's where I found TruLight, Seguin Youth
Hargrave. Other supported agencies include but are not limited to Communities in Schools, Guadalupe County Children's Advocacy Center, TLU/MTS Community Music Academy, Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas and Connections Individual & Family Services. NJ Bill To Remove Religious Exemption For Vaccines Fails
Iowa Child Goes Blind From Flu
(Trenton, NJ) -- A controversial bill in New Jersey concerning vaccinations is being scrapped, for now. The measure would have banned religious exemptions to vaccines required for children to go to public schools. But a vote on the bill was canceled Monday after it failed to get enough support to pass. Democratic sponsors say they will reintroduce the legislation Tuesday and start the process over. Senate President Stephen Sweeney argued they are "ready to go to war over this," adding it's about public health and protecting people.
(Waterloo, IA) -- A four-year-old Iowa child is now blind from the flu. Jade DeLucia's family says she nearly died when she contracted the flu last month. She was rushed to the hospital with a dangerously high fever and her eyes rolling to the back of her head. During her two-week hospitalization, she developed a rare form of blindness called encephalopathy [[en-seph-uh-LOP-oh-thee]] that may be permanent. The last flu vaccine she had was in March and her parents thought that'd be enough, but they're now urging other families to heed CDC warnings. The CDC says children are being hit especially hard with lifethreatening symptoms this flu season. 90% Of Patients Who Need Knee Replacement Wait Too Long
Texas Teen Youngest Vaping Death (Dallas, TX) -- A 15-year-old in Texas is being confirmed as the youngest reported vapingrelated death in the U.S. Dallas County officials announced the death in a press release just ahead of the start of the new year, noting death can come after even short-term use of e-cigarette or vaping products. The CDC reports 57 deaths link to vaping across 27 states and Washington, D.C., with more than 26-hundred people hospitalized.
(Chicago, IL) -- A new study shows that 90-percent of patients who need knee replacement surgery delay getting it and, as a result, are deriving less benefit from it. Dr. Hassan Ghomrawi of Northwestern Medicine in Chicago found that most patients are in their 60s and wait two to four years, even as long as eight years, to get their knees replaced. He says patients often say they're too busy taking care of a loved one to proceed with knee surgery. Dr. Ghomrawi says the ideal timing is based on an algorithm that factors in pain, joint function, age and what x-rays show. He says, ultimately, pain is the driving force that convinces patients it's time to under knee replacement surgery.
