It's Showtime! Guadalupe County Youth Show currently underway, auction set for Saturday By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Area youth are hoping that all of their hard work will pay off during this year's 79th Guadalupe County Youth Livestock and Homemakers Show. The show which began on Wednesday runs through Saturday at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. This year's show has just over 1,400 entries -- entries submitted from kids representing schools across the county. Found prepping her heifer, Roxy, at the fairground barns was Samuel Clemens Senior Kamryn Morrison. Morrison says she's worked hard all year long and is hoping for the best as she enters the poultry, heifer and steer competitions. "I like it. It gives us a lot of responsibility. It's really good. It's something I knew I wanted to do in the beginning. My family started off showing goats and rabbits and so I wanted to get into it," said Kamryn. Like most students, parents often play an important role in their projects. Morrison's father Carl says he's proud of his daughter's dedication and commitment to the program. He says while it is a lot of work, in the end, it's all worth it. "It takes time. You have to put in the time and effort if you want to achieve the goals but it pays off in the end though. It just gives her a better prospect because she wants to go to college for Ag and it just shows her (the difference) from the 9th grade to the 12th grade and it's just really going to help her out in the future," said Morrison. Students to bring their best projects forward at local youth show YOUTH SHOW, from page 1

Once the judging of the projects is over, then most students can look forward to seeing those projects move over to the auction block. Debra Reiley, co-secretary for the youth show committee, says the auction tops off the experience for the students as they look for top dollar on their projects. Reiley says bidders are reminded that all projects will be up for bid during the Premium Auction scheduled for Saturday. Reiley says this is when the community is encouraged to come out and show its support.
Laney Ferrell, a sophomore at Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, is among the 1,400 students participating in this year's Guadalupe County Youth Livestock and Homemakers Show.
"We just moved to the Saturday auction now. So, those projects - baked goods, handicraft, Ag mechanics and the livestock will all sell at the auction on Saturday. It's a premium auction. The buyers, the way that works for us, is that everyone has to have a buyer's number. So, even if you plan to give $20, we are going to have a number attached to your name and you just come in the doors and there will be ladies up front that will be glad

to meet you and register you. We'll get your information. We'll get you a buyer's number. You can bid from the floor or we've got to a lot of what they call a multi buyer's sheet. So a particular kid will have a sheet on him and we ask that our buyers that if you put your name on a multi buyer sheet, you are donating $100 to that particular auction item. Otherwise, you can do what we call add-ons. An add-on is a $20 minimum. We have a special add-on form and you write the kids name, their entry number and you put the amount of money that you want on there," said Reiley. Reiley says there are, of course, several recognition levels for those wishing to participate in the auction. They include Platinum for bids $10,000 or more; Gold, $2,500 to $9,999 and Silver, $750-$2,499. There are also Youth Show Partners who contribute $750 or less and the Auction Buyer Reception which recognizes those individuals or businesses who contribute $500 or more. Reiley says bidders are especially encouraged to pull out
their wallets for a chance to support this year's champions. "Grand champions and reserve champions, we'll sell first and if you are part of the grand champion or reserve champion buyers, you have to be willing to spend $500 or $1,000 in that area and you will receive a champion buyer cap for doing that. If you are interested in being a champion or reserve champion buyer, we ask that you get in contact with Wade Pape. He is actually getting the money together for those champion and reserve champions. So contact him or you can contact me and I'll get you with Wade if you are willing to do that," said Reiley. Auction registration begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. It will be followed by the hospitality buffet at 11 a.m., the announcement of showmanship winners and buckle donors at 11:30 a.m., opening ceremonies at 11:50 a.m. and the auction at noon. Those wishing to contribute to the champion projects are asked to call 830-305-0456. A complete listing of this year's show schedule can be found at gcys.org.

Seguin ISD Choir Showcase, Gospel Fest among weekend MLK events By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin's now five day MLK Day celebration continues this weekend. The observance, which honors the slain Civil Rights Leader Martin Luther King Jr., kicked off Thursday night with the Seguin Baptists Minister's Union. The event is hosted each year by the Seguin MLK Planning Committee. Friday night, the celebration will feature local students during the Seguin ISD Choir Showcase. The free event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center (PAC). Regina Lee, a member of the planning committee, says the choir showcase is an uplifting evening featuring some of the district's youngest children. "Several years ago, we tried a talent show. It kind of worked a little bit but there's nothing greater than having the students do something, anything because when you have students participate, you have mother, father, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and definitely friends, friends and neighbors. This is really a blowout when we have this. Not every grade is showcased because of the time element but that is also a 7 to 9 p.m. event. The school handles it. All we do is ask them. They support it. We are at the PAC center and it's just a wonderful event. I mean if you really want some entertainment that night, go out and see what the kids can do. It's really uplifting and you are looking at the future and they are there and they are working on it," said Lee.
Committee member Herman Lampkin, says the community won't be disappointed and applauds each of the students in advance. "I was there last year. It was probably our most well attended event and it's just great to see that so many young people still take such a great interest in Dr. King and his legacy," said Lampkin. Derric Bogany, another committee member, says this type of event is probably among the most important as it reminds us of our own responsibilities in sharing the messages of Dr. King. "It's awesome just to see that and we are ensuring that his legacy doesn't become forgotten and that's a great thing. It's becoming more personal to me because now I have a 1-year-old and certain things that go on in life as a parent, I need to train him and teach him about things that have happened in the past and so this great celebration that we are doing with the kids from the Seguin ISD is just necessary that that helps reinforce that that name is not forgotten for the ultimate sacrifice that he gave. It's more personal to me now because now I am charged with making sure I educate my little one on these things as well," said Bogany. The schedule continues on Saturday with the previously mentioned MLK Dinner Theatre, featuring the play "Entertaining Angels" by Playwright Que Samuels. The event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Seguin Coliseum. The dinner is the only paid event for the weekend. Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased at Seguin Radio KWED.
Also helping to wrap up events before the official MLK Day holiday and Symbolic March on Monday is Sunday night's Gospel Fest. Lampkin says the concert will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church located at 1314 E. Cedar St. Lampkin says the concert is another fantastic and free community event. "We are back at First Baptist. We have a new lineup and actually Que Samuels will be staying over from Saturday and he'll be our MC on Sunday and he has what he calls the 'Gospel Gumbo.' It's going to be all kind of different styles. As we all know, Dr. King was not just about black people but he cared about all races. Equality for all and so that's really what we want our events to look like. We want our events to look like his dream. When we put this event together, that's what we had in mind. There's going to be host of groups and choirs but our featured group that night is going to be 'Men of Purpose' which is also kind from the Bryan/College Station area. So, these are not just people you can go down the street and see. They are coming from quite a distance away and we look forward to seeing them," said Lampkin. Citizens are also reminded to make plans to attend this year's Symbolic March. However, this year, the direction of the route will be in reverse with the walk beginning at Texas Lutheran University's Wupperman Little Theater at 11 a.m. and then moving east on Court Street to downtown's Central Park for follow-up activities to include a guest speaker, food trucks and live music.

TLU rides a five-game winning streak into the matchup after moving its SCAC record to 6-1 and the overall mark to 9-5 with road wins over St. Thomas and Centenary last weekend. The 77-74 win over St. Thomas on Friday was the Celts first loss of the season after a 13-0 start. Fourth-year head coach Mike Wacker’s Bulldogs are second in the conference standings, a halfgame behind St. Thomas. Dallas has recovered from an 02 start in conference play to win four straight and improved to 85 overall in Jared Samples’ 12th season as head coach by edging Schreiner 72-68 last Saturday in Irving. With a 4-2 SCAC record, the Crusaders sit in third place, a game behind TLU. See SCAC, page 5

season and a 4-3 record in SCAC play after holding off Centenary 69-58 Sunday in Shreveport.
The last time the teams faced each other in Seguin, the Bulldogs rallied past Dallas 99-95 in double overtime to win the 2019 SCAC championship.
The defending SCAC champion Bulldogs currently sit fifth in the conference standings behind Trinity (6-0), Austin College (5-1), St. Thomas (6-2), and Colorado College (5-2).
Dallas guard Michael Wambsgans hit his first 10 shots on the way to a game-high 35 points in that matchup. As a junior this season, Wambsgans leads the Crusaders and ranks 10th the SCAC with a 14.8 scoring average on 35.6 percent shooting from three-point range.
The Dallas women have struggled to a 3-9 overall mark and a 1-5 SCAC record. The Crusaders suffered their fourth straight loss Saturday in a 75-57 setback to Schreiner.
Other key returnees from last year’s conference runner-up include guards Jai Love (9.9 ppg, 4.5 ast.), Dustin Mathis (11.5 ppg, 4.2 ast.), and big man John Russell (6.2 ppg, 3.9 reb.). The TLU roster experienced significantly more turnover in the off-season, with six of the team’s top seven scorers lost to graduation. The only returning starter in that group is junior guard Sebastian Andrade, who ranks fifth in the SCAC with a 16.9 scoring average. Multiple Bulldogs have successfully filled prominent roles around Andrade with increased playing time, including junior forward Caleb Lister (14.7 ppg, 7.7 reb. - 8th SCAC), senior Incarnate Word transfer Jorden Kite (12.6 ppg, .385 3FG - 6th SCAC, .932 FT - 1st), junior guard Jamir Mason (8.4 ppg) and freshman forward Trystin Silas (7.2 ppg). Friday’s matchup also features two of the top defensive teams in the SCAC, as Dallas allows a conference-low 67.1 points per game, while TLU ranks third at 69.9. The TLU and Dallas men tip at 5:30 p.m. Friday as part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader that will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with streaming video at tlubulldogs.com. CDC Lifts Warning On Romaine Lettuce
U.S. Government: Recent Decade The Hottest Ever
(Atlanta, GA) -- It's now safe to eat romaine lettuce. The e-coli outbreak linked to farms in Salinas, California appears to be over. The CDC lifted its warning after telling people in November to avoid romaine lettuce. Since then, 167 people in 27 states have gotten sick with 85 needing to be hospitalized. The FDA is still investigating to find the source of the contamination.
(Washington, DC) -- It is definitely getting hotter. Two U.S. government agencies said the decade that just ended was the hottest on record. They also said 2019 checked in as the second-hottest year on record. 2016 has the distinction of being the hottest ever. The last five years are being blamed for the last decade being the hottest in recorded history.
CDC: One Sixth Of Vaping Illnesses Linked To Legal THC (Washington, DC) -- New federal data shows that one-in-six vaping lung illnesses is linked to THC that was legally purchased. The CDC study looked at more than 800 patients in Illinois, Wisconsin and Utah who provided data on the source of their THC-containing products. It said 16-percent reported acquiring their products from legal dispensaries. The majority said they got their THC products from "informal" sources, such as family, friends and online dealers.

Florida Legislature Debates Key West Sunscreen Ban (Tallahassee, FL) -- The Florida state legislature is moving to prevent local governments from banning the sale of sunscreen that can potentially harm the environment. The city of Key West has slated a ban to go into effect in 2021 that will prohibit the sales of sunscreen that could be harmful to coral reefs. The issue centers on sunscreens that contain the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have drawn concerns about harming coral reefs. The Rules Committee of the Florida Senate has approved a measure that would block local regulation of over-the-counter drugs and cosmetics, targeting most sunscreens. Florida Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Rob Bradley says sunscreen is vital to protect Floridians and tourists from skin cancer.

She listened to anyone who needed to vent or if they needed someone to bounce ideas off of. She was a mentor to all teachers that she ever worked with, including many former students who became teachers.
She had the patience of an angel, especially dealing with Otto and her children. She loved the San Antonio Spurs, Mickey Mouse, playing dominoes, and her girls (grandchildren).

If you knew Becky, you knew she was a kind soul, with a teacher's heart.
She helped wherever she could, whether it was helping family, coworkers, neighbors, or just a friend. You knew you could count on her to assist, even in ways you didn't think that you had asked. Becky went above and beyond on anything.

Paschal Award, T. Fernandez wrote "Mrs. Schultz is always sharing her knowledge of books with the teachers and students. I don't think there has been a time where I walked into the library and didn't see her reading a book or talking about a book to her students." She wanted to foster a love of reading to as many people as possible, and as a Librarian, she was able to reach many more than in the classroom alone. If your kids ever got a Christmas gift from Becky, it was probably a book.
