MLK Symbolic March changes direction, march this year to begin at TLU something else that someone is doing in the community. We can all help one another -- build a tighter bond in this Seguin community. This is a great avenue through this celebration of this great leader to build this bond in the community," said Bogany.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin looks to wrap up its five day MLK Day weekend celebration today but not before bringing the community together for one last gathering. That gathering, however, does come with one major change to note.
Lampkin says the committee is excited about seeing the events unfold with all the new changes for today's schedule. He says the positive change is welcomed especially when a community works all year long to continue the work of Dr. King.
After years of beginning the annual Symbolic March in downtown Seguin, the MLK Planning Committee this year has instead chosen to begin this year's march from the campus of Texas Lutheran University. Regina Lee, planning committee member, says there, the group will gather at TLU's Wupperman Little Theater at 11 a.m. for an opening prayer and some music. Then around 11:30 a.m., the group will set out toward Central Park in downtown Seguin for an official wrap up of events celebrating the legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "We've always tried to keep it where we didn't have vendors quote, unquote. It wasn't about somebody else making money. It was about the legacy. It was a day on and not a day off. We realized that we have to change somewhat because people they walk and get hungry but hope-
fully, we will have people that come to the square not only to listen to the music and to the speaker but actually act like community and get to know each other," said Lee. MLK Committee Member Herman Lampkin says upon arriving to Central Park, the community will find a host of food trucks and will gather to listen to this year's guest speaker, a former TLU Bulldog. "We've got a 'TLC' Bulldog that is coming to be our keynote speaker in
Mike Washington so just being in the area and being an alum from TLU, you have to know who Mike Washington is -- he really is the only football player to have his number retired and he's done some great things even after his career ended so he's now on the admissions board for UT in Austin and has been doing that for the last 40 years and he's on the board of regents now with TLU so we just felt that with TLU being as strong as they are now, it would be fitting to bring him in. I'm excited about that," said Lampkin.

“We’ll get those little devils!”
Derric Bogany, committee member, says he encourages the assembling of folks in downtown Seguin following today's march. He says the host of MLK sponsored events are not just about remembering but also about continuing to help each other as a community. "We want to be able to network with the people in the community because through networking, you never know what resources that you can find within people in your community that can help you make this better or
"In my opinion, I feel like where we are today, social media being as prevalent as it is, it is easy to find things that divide us as opposed to finding things that bring us together and so, I hope that in what we do, that we find ways to teach each other how we can talk about disagreements in a positive way and that way, we can see things from each other's point of view," said Lampkin. This year's MLK program also grew a day by kicking off on Thursday with the Seguin Baptists Minister's Union celebration. The five day celebration, these last few days, also included the Seguin ISD Choir Showcase, Dinner Theater and Gospel Fest.

Minigrip recognized as one of the largest fundraising partners for the United Way
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- If you were among the dozens that purchased mini plastic bags from Minigrip this past year, then you were among the plant's efforts to support the Guadalupe County United Way. Minigrip is being applauded this week for contributing $81,272 to the local program which supports 45 non-profits in the area. Thanks to the money raised, these agencies get a slice of the funding pie raised from business partners across the area. Last week, the United Way tipped its hat off to CMC Steel for its $50,000 contribution. This time, Minigrip is being recognized for its donation which is completed with a match from its umbrella company. That's according to Mary Hargrave, the executive director for the local United Way office.
marathons and all of those funds are also part of the United Way contribution. Employees, themselves, they organize a lot of this stuff. They are really committed to the betterment of Guadalupe County and its citizens. It's really quite amazing," said Hargrave. As if the matching grants were not already enough, Hargrave says she applauds Minigrip for giving the employees the time, while still on the clock, to help raise money. "Matching contributions and the fact that they allow them the time to do these things -to have the time for the bake sale and for the mini bag sale and it's the Inteplast (Group Company) Minigrip, the umbrella corporation, to allow
all of the bags that for whatever reason they determine -(maybe) the box was broken or whatever it was -- they determine that these extra bags can be sold to the general public," said Hargrave. Hargrave says she hopes that by recognizing these and other major partners for their annual contributions, then other plants even smaller ones will also want to join the effort. She says you don't have to be a large corporation like HEB or Caterpillar to show your support, she says businesses of all sizes can help the United Way reach its goal. She says once people are aware of the United Way's impact, then they'll recognize how each dollar can go a long way. "So many people are not
aware of what United Way does and the footprint that we have here in Guadalupe County. We are now supporting 45 agencies and as long as those agencies support people in Guadalupe County, they can apply for funding. We have agencies in San Antonio. We have agencies in Cibolo, Converse, New Braunfels but as long as they help people in Guadalupe County (they can apply). For instance, the Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation in New Braunfels, when the CCSCT discontinued their home meal program for seniors, Comal County picked that up and didn't ask for any extra funds. All those meals that they provided were meals that they paid for. This year, we were able to increase their contribution a little bit but just the
"At first when I began my career with the United Way, I thought it was just the proceeds from the mini bag sales that they have that is two or three times a year but after working with them and we now have a Minigrip employee who is on our board of directors, they do bake sales, they get sponsors for
fact that they picked up the home meal program for here in Seguin enabled them to apply for funding and that was a huge thing that they did because otherwise, these homebound seniors would not be having their meals delivered anymore and that made a big difference to a lot of people here in Seguin," said Hargrave. The Guadalupe County United Way is projected to surpass its 2019 goal of $305,000 with an additional $50,000. Hargrave says thanks to this increase, the United Way is now able to serve an additional five nonprofits with funding. Other supported agencies include but are not limited to Seguin Area Youth Leadership Academy, Seguin Sunrise Rotary Dream Scholarship Program, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 61, Guadalupe County MH-MR, the Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center and the South Texas Pregnancy Care Center. The Guadalupe County United Way collects donations year round. Those wishing to contribute to the 2019 campaign goal are asked to visit guadalupeunitedway.org or call 830372-9009.

Marion Community News Marion Mayor Victor Contreras monthly update I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday season and I want to wish everyone a great and prosperous 2020. It is with a heavy heart that we say farewell to a colleague and friend, Alderman Art Andrews he recently lost his battle to cancer. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word and will be greatly missed by the council, myself and the community. His positive attitude and leadership is something we should all aspire to be like, I say this from the examples that he set forth. I hope you will keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. The Marion City Council passed a few Proclamations at our regular January meeting. The first was Proclamation 2020-001P declaring that the first Friday in December will continue to be the city of Marion’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and we will continue to build upon the 33 year tradition.
Proclamation 2020-002P declaring January 2020 as Marion ISD school board recognition month. Honoring them for their tireless work by being strong advocates for public education and they are also responsible for communicating the needs of the school district to the public and the public’s expectation to the district.
On an encouraging note the city council and the school board came together at a duly called special meeting to discuss the school districts latest project, in my 19 years of public service in both capacities this was a first. It was great to see the willingness for all parties to work together for a common goal.
Proclamation 2020-003P marking January as National mentoring month. On hand to facilitate and celebrate this with the council were personnel from the Community’s In Schools organization. One of my volunteer jobs that I find most rewarding is to be a mentor to children in the Marion district, it is something I have done for the past five years and will continue to do so. CIS is a worthwhile program that can directly affect the wellbeing of the students as well as helping the students stay focused in their studies to graduate. I challenge my fellow council and community members to get involved in this program, it only takes about 45 minutes a week to make a difference in a child’s life. In the coming months we are going to be studyingsome of our ordinances and to see if any changes are needed. I feel that they are living documents that require them to be updated periodically. The councils are forever changing and they are guided by the citizens that they represent.
On a personal note anyone over 50 should really consider taking the Shingles shot, I can attest from personal experience they are very painful, uncomfortable and not very fun at all. For the readers that follow my travels, we were able to go camping for a few days over the Christmas holidays. We ventured to Inks Lake in Burnet, one of the things we did find relaxing is there wasn’t any internet or WiFi in other words no social media distractions!
Mayor Victor A Contreras 210-846-3172.

60 Vaping Deaths, 2,668 Lung Illnesses
Doctors Looking For Men To Try Male Birth Control
(Atlanta, GA) -- The vaping epidemic is soaring with 60 deaths reported in 27 states. The CDC says more than 26-hundred people have been hospitalized with a lung illness in the past seven months. And of those, about 83-percent vaped THC, which is the main psychoactive component in marijuana. CDC officials are confident vitamin E acetate in THC vaping products is to blame. The update comes two weeks after the FDA banned most flavored e-cigarettes.
(Kansas City, KS) -- A new birth control for men is in the works, but couples are needed to test it out. Doctors at the University of Kansas want to conduct a two-year trial for a gel that goes on a man's shoulder or arm daily. It's expected to decrease a man's sperm count without reducing his sexual drive. And so far, the results are said to be promising. Kansas is one of three cities testing the gel. The others are Los Angeles and Seattle.

NJ Sharing Network Sets Record For Organ Donations
(Undated) -- Millions of people are trying to get healthy in 2020 and CrossFit is the popular choice. It was the most googled fitness term for New Year's resolutions in 13 states including Alaska, Florida, Texas and Utah. Other searches included Planet Fitness, Weight Watchers and Nutrisystem. Those in Kansas and Oregon want to know how to lose a double chin while South Dakota wants to get rid of love handles. Other unique searches included fat transfer in Mississippi and juice cleanse in Massachusetts. As for pilates, that only goes to California.
(New Providence, NJ) -- NJ Sharing Network says it set a record in 2019 for organ donations with 206 donors and 601 organ transplants, or lives saved. President Joe Roth says his non-profit organ procurement organization also helped facilitate 173 living donor transplants, generally involving kidneys. He says the need is great in New Jersey where four-thousand people are waiting for a lifesaving organ. Nationally, 113-thousand men, women and children are on waiting lists. Donate Life America says 22 patients die each day because the organ they need isn't donated in time.

He will be remembered as a detailer with SMI for many years before his retirement. He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his loving wife Sherry Pfeil; sons, Patton White and wife Maria, and Beckett White; grandchildren, Christian White, Cameron White and Cory White; brother-inlaw, Charles William Cowey, Jr. and wife Barbara; numerous other loving family members and friends. Rebecca "Becky" Sue Schultz
Seguin, was received by the Lord in Heaven on January 13, 2020. A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, from 5 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Private services and interment will be held at a later date. Becky was born on January 30, 1947, in San Marcos, TX to Otis and Ruth (McCurry) Hargus. Becky retired as a teacher with 44 years of dedication to a job she loved dearly. She had several more years prior to that as she substituted while she was a high school student in Victoria. She taught in Laredo, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Seguin, and last and longest tenure was at SCUCISD. Becky was celebrated many times for her teaching with awards and accolades such as multiple Teacher of the Year, The Spurs Teacher of the Game, Librarian of the Year, and above all the Norma Paschal Commitment to Children Award given by SCUCISD in 2014. Becky taught many subjects; from ESL, Music, English, Social Studies, Science and last and her favorite: School Librarian. As quoted by a colleague when nominating her for the Norma Paschal Award, T. Fernandez wrote "Mrs. Schultz is always sharing her knowledge of books with the teachers and students. I don't think there has been a time where I walked into the library and didn't see her reading a book or talking about a book to her students." She wanted to foster a love of reading to as many people as possible, and as a Librarian, she was able to reach many more than in the classroom alone. If your kids ever got a Christmas gift from Becky, it was probably a book.
Becky is preceded in death by her son, Bradley Schultz, and her parents. Wanda Kaye Hoermann
If you knew Becky, you knew she was a kind soul, with a teacher's heart. She listened to anyone who needed to vent or if they needed someone to bounce ideas off of. She was a mentor to all teachers that she ever worked with, including many former students who became teachers. She helped wherever she could, whether it was helping family, coworkers, neighbors, or just a friend. You knew you could count on her to assist, even in ways you didn't think that you had asked. Becky went above and beyond on anything.
Rebecca "Becky" Sue Schultz, age 72 of
cooking her lasagna; so much so, that her kids would invite their friends over to eat.
Wanda Kaye Hoermann was born August 26, 1938, in Corpus Christi, to William and Lucille Townsend. The family later moved to Alice, Texas, where Kaye graduated from William Adams High School in 1956.
She had the patience of an angel, especially dealing with Otto and her children. She loved the San Antonio Spurs, Mickey Mouse, playing dominoes, and her girls (grandchildren).
Kaye was a former teacher and school librarian who graduated with degrees in Elementary Education and Library Science from Texas A&I and Our Lady of the Lake University.
She loved to provide for others, mainly through
During college, Kaye met the love of her
life - Sidney Hoermann - whom she married on February 6, 1959. Kaye loved traveling, especially to Colorado and England, and shared this love with Sid, her daughters, and her grandchildren. A bona-fide Anglophile, she embraced all things British. The following sums up her philosophy of traveling: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the places and moments that take our breath away” (Anonymous). Kaye loved reading, particularly anything British, and she relished time spent outdoors, especially at The Lucky Four Ranch. Kaye was a patron of the arts who enjoyed attending the theatre and symphony. She was known for being a thoughtful and generous hostess and letter correspondent. Her faith and her family were two of the most important factors in her life. Her signature look that she will be remembered by was her British Red lipstick. Kaye was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek. She was a past president of the Seguin ISD ATPE (local teacher association) and also the Seguin Republican Women’s Club, and a member of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association. Kaye is survived by the following: her husband, Sid; daughters Tina and Deborah (and son-in-law Alan Watt); sister Patricia Woolf; brother Frank Townsend; grandchildren Sydney Watt, Sabina Schwab, and Philip Watt; and numerous nephews, nieces, and their spouses and children. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, William Townsend; sister Kalita Holbrook; sister-in-law Mary Beth Townsend; brother-in-law Rudolf Woolf; and son-in-law Dudley Schwab. Memorial gifts may be made to Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek and the Seguin Public Library. Memorial service for Kaye Hoermann will be at Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek, 3305 Church Rd Seguin, TX 78155, at 11 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2020.
