The Voice of Seguin Today

A reverse in direction for this year's Symbolic March and the near perfect weather are said to have helped draw the large gathering to Central Park for this year's MLK Day program. Awaiting the group in the downtown gazebo were live music, food trucks and words from this year's guest speaker, Mike Washington. Washington, described by former TLU Coach Jim Wacker as "the finest athlete I've ever coached" and "the most exciting veer quarterback I've ever seen play the game" helped deliver this year's message.

(Seguin) -- "There is strength in numbers." Those are the words from organizers of this year's MLK Day Planning Committee as they welcomed dozens and dozens of marchers to downtown Seguin on Monday afternoon.

At the end of his collegiate career, Washington's No. 10 jersey was retired and has continued to be remembered thanks to the annual "Mike Washington Most Valuable Player Award." Although that collegiate career came to an end, Washington says being a player and being part of a team continues even after TLU. That team, however, is now shaped as a community and as a country that are left to continue the work of Dr. King. See MLK-DAY, page 2

Seguin comes together during annual MLK Symbolic March MLK-DAY, continued from page 1 "There's work that needs to be done and I think even Dr. King in his later speeches and things, he alluded to the fact that we are beyond the overt issues that were in the past -- access to buses, access to lunch counters -- those types of overt actions. They were all gone. The real battle is trying to find equality in all other facets of our lives in terms of housing and employment and all the different things that are important for upper mobility. That's the battle that is kind of the silent battle and by his assertion, the more difficult the battle is to try to find ways to where we can make sure that all people have an opportunity to engage in all of those different facets of our lives," said Washington. Washington says the obligation to help each other continues with each of us. "And then when Dr. King gives us even 50 years from the time that he made most of these statements and had his vision, those

visions are still applicable to today. They are still applicable to our current circumstances and if we are all going to advance as a people, then we have to make sure that we care for all that are involved," said Washington. After graduating from TLU, Washington went on to accept a position in the admissions office at the University of Texas at Austin. Washington says for the last 42 years, his work has allowed him to open many of the doors that he speaks of and encourages the rest of us to see what doors we ourselves have to offer to others. "We are very very interested in inclusion. We want to make sure that students from all sectors of life have an opportunity to have access to that particular institution because of the fact that it is a flagship institution of the state of Texas and students should have access to it. It doesn't have a history necessarily of access so we are try-

ing to change that to where all students will realize from the time that they are born that these institutions of higher education are for them regardless of who they are and there should not be barriers that will prevent them from doing so," said Washington.

Monday's Symbolic March and MLK Day Program wrapped up Seguin's five day celebration. The celebration that increased from four to five days this year included a number of events. Those events included A Seguin Baptists Minister's Union celebration; Seguin ISD Choir Showcase, MLK Dinner Theater and Gospel Fest. This marked the 35th year for the annual Seguin MLK Observance and Celebration. Lead by the Seguin Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee, the event is also made possible thanks to the Guadalupe County Community Symposium, Texas

New Study Shows 9-11 First Responders At Greater Risk For Study: Reduced-Fat Milk Can Help You Live Longer Leukemia (New York, NY) -- A new study shows that 9-11 first responders are at a greater risk of developing leukemia. Lead author Moshe Shapiro of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, says the study is the first to show an increase in the incidence of the cancer, which may take years to develop after exposure. The study was published in the journal, JNCI Cancer Spectrum, and found that those exposed to the toxins found at Ground Zero have a 41-percent higher risk of developing the blood cancer compared to the general population. The study examined a group of nearly 29thousand people enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program, which offers care to survivors and responders suffering from 9-11 related illnesses.

(Provo, UT) -- It looks like milk really can do a body good. Good enough to live longer. That's what a new study finds. But not just any milk. The key is to lower the fat. For example, switching from two-percent to one-percent can add four years. Researchers in Utah analyzed the genes of six-thousand adults and learned high-fat milk puts stress on their cells. That in turn can kill tissues in the body. Surprisingly, the study also found people who didn't drink any milk aged quicker than those who opted for skim milk.

Study Finds Less Unprotected Sex Happens After Pope Visits

FDA Warns Weight-Loss Drug May Have Increased Risk Of Cancer

(Brighton, UK) -- A new study shows a visit by the Pope results in fewer unwanted pregnancies. Researchers in the UK concluded couples have less unprotected sex during a papal visit to their town or city to avoid unwanted pregnancies and breaking Catholic doctrine. Abortion rates also fell by a fifth for a year or more after a visit by the Pope. Since there was no corresponding increase in the birth rate, scientists also believe the Pope's influence either increases the use of contraception or inspires chastity among believers. The study results appear in the Journal of Population Economics.

(Washington, DC) -- The F-D-A is warning Americans that a prescription weight-loss drug may be associated with an increased risk of cancer. The Food and Drug Administration said clinical trials showed there may be a possible increase in risk with the drug Belviq [[ BELveek ]]. The drug is known in its generic form as lorcaserin. The FDA approved the drug in 2012.

Rebecca "Becky" Sue Schultz Rebecca "Becky" Sue Schultz, age 72 of Seguin, was received by the Lord in Heaven on January 13, 2020. A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Private services and interment will be held at a later date. Becky was born on January 30, 1947, in San Marcos, TX to Otis and Ruth (McCurry) Hargus. Becky retired as a teacher with 44 years of dedication to a job she loved dearly. She had several more years prior to that as she substituted while she was a high school student in Victoria. She taught in Laredo, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Seguin, and last and longest tenure was at SCUCISD. Becky was celebrated many times for her teaching with awards and accolades such as multiple Teacher of the Year, The Spurs Teacher of the Game, Librarian of the

Year, and above all the Norma Paschal Commitment to Children Award given by SCUCISD in 2014. Becky taught many subjects; from ESL, Music, English, Social Studies, Science and last and her favorite: School Librarian. As quoted by a colleague when nominating her for the Norma Paschal Award, T. Fernandez wrote "Mrs. Schultz is always sharing her knowledge of books with the teachers and students. I don't think there has been a time where I walked into the library and didn't see her reading a book or talking about a book to her students." She wanted to foster a love of reading to as many people as possible, and as a Librarian, she was able to reach many more than in the classroom alone. If your kids ever got a Christmas gift from Becky, it was probably a book. If you knew Becky, you knew she was a kind soul, with a teacher's heart. She listened to anyone who needed to vent or if they needed someone to bounce ideas off of. She was a mentor to all teachers that she ever worked with, including many former students who became teachers. She helped wherever she could, whether it was helping family, coworkers, neighbors, or just a friend. You knew you could count on her to assist, even in ways you didn't think that you had asked. Becky went above and beyond on anything. She had the patience of an angel, especially dealing with Otto and her children. She loved the San Antonio Spurs, Mickey Mouse, playing dominoes, and her girls (grandchildren). She loved to provide for others, mainly through cooking her lasagna; so much so, that her kids would invite their friends over to eat.Becky is preceded in death by her son, Bradley Schultz, and her parents. Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Otto Henry Schultz; daughters, Stephanie McGree and husband Brad, and Katharine Champion and husband Randal; grandchildren, Lauren McGree, Autumn Champion, and Olivia Champion; sister Clara Bussard; several nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and many friends.
