Seguin’s Bradley to continue softball career at Our Lady of the Lake (Seguin) - Seguin High School senior Marissa Bradley signed a letter of intent to play college softball at Our Lady of the Lake Univeristy in San Antonio last Thursday during a signing event and reception at Goldie Harris Gym.
Seguin head coach John Garcia sees every attribute necessary for success as a collegiate student-athlete in Bradley. “I think the biggest thing about Marissa is her focus, and her dedication to what she’s doing, whether it’s in the classroom or on the softball field,” Garcia said. “You spend any time around her, you’ll see that’s apparent. I’ve never had a kid or a ballplayer that’s been that determined to be successful in both, and she just does it every day, day in and day out.”
Bradley has been an All-District selection in each of her first three seasons with the Matadors. She hit .475 with a team-high 49 RBIs, three home home runs, and 23 doubles as a junior in 2019 while splitting time between the pitcher’s circle and first base. OLLU plans to use Bradley as a hitter and first baseman. Bradley identified two factors that swung her final decision toward the Saints among the multiple schools she considered. “The fact that it’s close to home, I didn’t really want to go super far, and that it’s a four-year university, so it’s something that I

can do long term, and not have to transfer, or the hassle of that,” Bradley said. Bradley has helped Seguin
advance a total of eight playoff rounds in three varsity seasons, including a trip to the 5A Region IV semifinals that matched the deepest post-sea-
son run in program history last spring. She was a star on Seguin’s Little League World Series team in the summer of 2015.
“I’m really excited,” Bradley said. “I’m just there to do whatever the team needs me to do. If that’s support them, play in the field, whatever, I’m ready to do that. My experience, my journey, it’s incredible. It’s something I never would have thought I would have done.”

SHS senior Brittain commits to Howard Payne volleyball program
said. “The girls and I got along really fast. That kind of sold me on it, and the coach as well. I really liked the coach.”
(Seguin) - Seguin High School volleyball standout Riley Brittain will continue her playing career at the NCAA Division III level after signing with Howard Payne University last Friday.
Brittain moved to Seguin in the summer of 2018 when her parents Dusty and Angela took jobs as teachers and coaches at SHS. She had no idea what to expect from a new program and new teammates, but says the experience has been invaluable in her development as a player.
Brittain was a two-time All-District setter for Seguin. She helped the Matadors win the District 26-5A championship and advance three playoff rounds to the Region IV quarterfinals as a junior in 2018. As a senior last fall, Brittain produced a team-high 684 assists to go with 164 kills and 347 digs. “She’s just done a phenomenal job in leading the program,” Seguin head volleyball coach Kristi Stanley said. “She’s quite, but always does the right thing. Summer strength and conditioning, she was there every single day this last summer. She’s just extremely dedicated, and once we talked after the season and she decided that she’s not ready to hang it up, we got in there and started looking up some schools that she’d be able to play at, and luckily enough, it

World Health Organization To Meet About Coronavirus (Undated) -- International health officials will meet this week to determine if the outbreak of coronavirus in China is an international health emergency. The virus has infected nearly 200 people in China and cases have been confirmed in South Korea, Thailand and Japan. Symptoms of coronavirus are fever, cough and difficulty breathing. The World Health Organization is planning to convene on Wednesday to see if it can issue any recommendations about how the disease should be managed.
China Concerned About Spread Of Mysterious Pneumonia-Like Virus (Beijing, China) -- China is working to stop the spread of a mysterious pneumonia-like virus as a major travel season is about to start. Chinese health officials say a new strain of corona virus is spreading rapidly and has resulted in three confirmed deaths so far. The new strain first emerged late last year in Wuhan [[ WOO-hahn ]] Province in Central China but has now
turned up in other areas, including Shanghai and Beijing. Wuhan remains the epicenter of the outbreak with over one-hundred new cases reported in the last few days alone but South Korea is now reporting its first confirmed case. There's concern the potentially deadly virus could spread dramatically when many Chinese citizens travel for the Chinese New Year holiday.
Mysterious Virus That Appeared In China Prompting US Airport Screenings (New York, NY) -- The CDC is continuing to screen all airline passengers arriving from Wuhan, China at JFK International Airport in New York and San Francisco and Los Angeles International Airports for signs of a new virus that's killed three people in China. Federal health officials say the virus belongs to the same family of coronaviruses as SARS, which killed about 800 people during a global outbreak nearly two decades ago. U.S. airport screenings began over the weekend with CDC health workers taking the temperatures of travelers arriving from Wuhan Province and asking about symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing and headaches.

Rebecca "Becky" Sue Schultz Rebecca "Becky" Sue Schultz, age 72 of Seguin, was received by the Lord in Heaven on January 13, 2020. A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Private services and interment will be held at a later date. Becky was born on January 30, 1947, in San Marcos, TX to Otis and Ruth (McCurry) Hargus. Becky retired as a teacher with 44 years of dedication to a job she loved dearly. She had several more years prior to that as she substituted while she was a high school student in Victoria. She taught in Laredo, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Seguin, and last and longest tenure was at SCUCISD. Becky was celebrated many times for her teaching with awards and accolades such as multiple Teacher of the Year, The Spurs Teacher of the Game, Librarian of the Year, and above all the Norma Paschal Commitment to Children Award given by SCU-
CISD in 2014. Becky taught many subjects; from ESL, Music, English, Social Studies, Science and last and her favorite: School Librarian. As quoted by a colleague when nominating her for the Norma Paschal Award, T. Fernandez wrote "Mrs. Schultz is always sharing her knowledge of books with the teachers and students. I don't think there has been a time where I walked into the library and didn't see her reading a book or talking about a book to her students." She wanted to foster a love of reading to as many people as possible, and as a Librarian, she was able to reach many more than in the classroom alone. If your kids ever got a Christmas gift from Becky, it was probably a book. If you knew Becky, you knew she was a kind soul, with a teacher's heart. She listened to anyone who needed to vent or if they needed someone to bounce ideas off of. She was a mentor to all teachers that she ever worked with, including many former students who became teachers. She helped wherever she could, whether it was helping family, coworkers, neighbors, or just a friend. You knew you could count on her to assist, even in ways you didn't think that you had asked. Becky went above and beyond on anything. She had the patience of an angel, especially dealing with Otto and her children. She loved the San Antonio Spurs, Mickey Mouse, playing dominoes, and her girls (grandchildren). She loved to provide for others, mainly through cooking her lasagna; so much so, that her kids would invite their friends over to eat.Becky is preceded in death by her son, Bradley Schultz, and her parents. Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Otto Henry Schultz; daughters, Stephanie McGree and husband Brad, and Katharine Champion and husband Randal; grandchildren, Lauren McGree, Autumn Champion, and Olivia Champion; sister Clara Bussard; several nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and many friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorials Processing St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude PL, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or a charity of one's choice. You are invited to sign the guestbook at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
