Playscapes on their way up in the Seguin ISD Seguin ISD provides updates on bond projects including Matador Stadium, AJB By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Voter approved bond projects in the Seguin ISD are either on their way up or have already made it to the drawing board. That's according to Bill Lewis, the chief operating officer and associate superintendent for the Seguin ISD. Lewis recently brought the board and the community up-to-date with the various projects currently going on throughout the school district. One of the first sets of projects to be arriving on the campuses will be the new outdoor ADA playscapes which include multi sensory play areas and shade canopies. Lewis say the new playscapes will begin arriving on campuses soon with the first playscape being installed at Rodriguez Elementary School. "There's construction currently going on at Rodriguez right now to prep the site, get a little bit of concrete work done and then, they'll start putting the playscape up and so once, they get the site prepped, those playscapes will go up in about four to five weeks for each project," said Lewis. Lewis says it just made sense for Rodriguez to be selected as the campus for the first install. See PLAYSCAPES, page 2
Here’s a glimpse of what the new voter approved ADA playscapes could look like. Variations of the playground are expected for each elementary school.

Seguin ISD provides progress on district wide bond projects
Lewis says after Rodriguez, the next schools on the schedule include Patlan and Jefferson followed by Koennecke and Vogel and then Weinert and McQueeney.
school and so now, they are putting together what it is going to look like inside as far as ceilings and walls and floors and doors and those kinds of things. So, that will be coming out in a couple of months to have those things finished. We've also worked with teachers about what they want to see in their classrooms, what they want to have in their classrooms, equipment wise, furniture wise -- what kind of spaces do they want to see in the school, what kind of common learning spaces do they want to see. They want bathrooms. They want all those things that are important. They want them close by for staff and for students. We are kind of laying all those things out right now in the building," said Lewis.
All playscapes included in this $1.8 million project are expected to be installed and ready for students in August.
Lewis says the district now has a timeline for the project and is ready to get things going.
Another project that many folks have already seen in full swing is the construction of the new Seguin High School Matador Stadium.
"So by November, we should be able to have the completed construction documents and then at that point, we could put those documents out to bid like we did with the stadium. We had a complete set of documents. We'll put it out to bid and then get those back in December/January, select a contractor and then get started. So, if we start in say January, February 2021 -- that's when construction would start -- so you are looking to phase it in. I believe we have about a two and a half year schedule -- up to three years. It depends how things go," said Lewis.
PLAYSCAPES, continued from page 1 "Our lay down yard with all the equipment is right there at A.J.B. so we went with Rodriguez because it is the closest in proximity just to get it up a little faster and see the progress and be able to see the finished product. So it was just the closest one to where all the equipment is laid down right now," said Lewis.
Lewis says the stadium is currently undergoing a rebuild at its current site. He says as of now, the project is where it needs to be. "We are all on schedule for Matador Stadium to be completed by August 17, 2020. The field will be finished prior to that earlier in the summer to be turned over to district so the team can start practice in the summer when they normally start practice so it will be ready and then the grandstands and other items will be completed by August the 17th," said Lewis. Lewis says the weather has obviously helped the project stay on schedule and says here soon, the public will begin noticing even more progress at the stadium. "We haven't had any major issues at this point. Everything has gone according to plan. The inground utilities have been smooth. Working with the city has been great so once the rest of this ground work is done, then you are going to start seeing everything start going up," said Lewis. Things have also already officially started with the A.J. Briesemeister Middle School project.
District officials say discussion is also set to begin next month on the $3.9 million partial renovation of the south school building at Jefferson Elementary. The projects are all part of the $64.7 million bond package approved by voters in May of 2019. Other included projects include the $1 million land purchase for the future replaceThe project was the largest project proposed to the ment of McQueeney Elementary School and $1.7 million for various campus improvements to include drainage, HVAC, community. plumbing and furniture. Lewis says the district is currently in the planning stages for the school's $39 million renovation and construction project. Lewis on Tuesday provided the update on the bond projects to members of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees. The public is "So AJB, we have started the design phase. So we are design- encouraged to follow the district's progress of these projects ing what it is going to look like. We've been working with by clicking the Bond 2019 button found on the district's webstaff and kind of came to an agreement about the layout of the site at seguin.k12.tx.us.

Comeback Mats! Seguin boys rally from 11 down to beat Veterans Memorial (Seguin) - For the second consecutive Tuesday, Seguin turned an 11-point third-quarter deficit into a critical District 26-5A win, this time erasing a 39-28 margin to surge past San Antonio-Veterans Memorial 58-50 at Goldie Harris Gym. The win came just seven days after the Matadors rallied back from 11 down on their home court to beat KerrvilleTivy 52-47. "We seem to like playing from behind right now," Seguin head coach Dwayne Gerlich quipped. "But no, the kids in the second half, we kind of challenged them at halftime. I thought we took Veterans Memorial's best
punch. They didn't miss a shot, our pressure defense really wasn't there like it should have been, and the kids really picked it up. We held them to 18 points in the second half - that was a phenomenal defensive effort." The visiting Patriots were shooting just 27 percent from three-point range coming into Tuesday, but they connected five times from deep in the first half to build a 32-28 halftime lead. Veterans Memorial scored the first seven points of the third quarter and held the Matadors without a bucket for more than six minutes to build the double-digit margin.
Gerrit Twitero knocked down a pair of free throws to end the Seguin drought with 1:25 left in the period. Joseph Vela followed with consecutive threes to make it a three-point game, 39-36, heading into the fourth quarter. Twitero banked in a driving runner to cap a 10-0 Seguin run on the first possession of the final frame. The Matadors built a 50-42 lead in the fourth period, Veterans Memorial used a 6-0 run to cut it to two, and Seguin used a layup in traffic by Vela, a pair of free throws by R.J. Acuna, one foul shot apiece by Vela and Christopher James, and two more free throws by Twitero to rebuild the final cushion to eight. Twitero led all scorers with 16
Autry's 31 fuels Marion boys in district road win (Ingram) - Sophomore guard Ryken Autry scorched the nets for 31 points Tuesday night to help the Marion boys basketball team roll over Ingram-Moore 78-47 in District 26-3A. Autry burried 12 of his 16 field goal attempts, including a 37 night from three-point range and a perfect 9-9 outing on two point attempts. He also went 4-5 at the free throw line. Zach Goodwin contributed 14 points on 6-9 shooting while collecting five assists and three steals. Jayden Williams also reached double figures with 12 points, connecting on five of his six field goal attempts. Samuel Montoya added seven points, Kadeem Blyden and
Fernando Romero four apiece, Bradley Cook three, Easton Allen two, and Hutch Rabenaldt one. Marion used a 23-12 run in the second quarter to take a 3726 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs edged the Warriors 1714 in the third period and pulled away with a 24-7 surge in the fourth. The win moves Marion to 1-1 in district play, 11-13 on the season. The Bulldogs continue the 26-3A slate Friday with a tough road test against defending 3A Region IV champion San Antonio-Cole, who enters the contest with a 19-6 record and the No. 3 ranking in the TABC's 3A state poll.
points and made all six of his free throws. Acuna added 13, nine in the first half, and James finished with 12. Vela scored all 11 of his points in the second half, beginning with the two threes that sparked Seguin's run late in the third quarter. "That's actually a little quick hitter than we run for Vela over there for the three, and they left him open both times, and he drained both of them," Gerlich said. "It could have easily gone the other way, but we trust all our seniors right now that when you're open, shoot it. So we ran that play two times in a row and he got two threes out of it, and that was a big help for us to get over the hump
and get some scoring going." The win snapped a fifth-place tie between Seguin and Veterans Memorial in the 26-5A standings, bumping the Matadors to 5-4 in district play, 14-12 overall. The Patriots drop to 4-5 in district, 11-18 on the season. Seguin also jumped BoerneChampion into fourth place, as the Chargers dropped to 4-4 in district with a Tuesday night loss to Harlandale. The Matadors visit Boerne-Champion on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Seguin looks to avenge a 51-44 home loss to the Chargers from Dec. 17.
Navarro girls run away from Poteet for home district win (Geronimo) - Navarro opened the second round of the District 30-4A girls basketball schedule with a 6540 thrashing of Poteet on Tuesday at the Navarro Events Center. Freshman guards Lalyn Sturm and Tatum Harborth combined for 33 points, with Sturm
pouring in 17 and Harborth netting 16. Micayla Hawes also reached double figures with 11. Ryanne Hepp and Kailey Dietert added six apiece, and Mary Gilliam finished with three. Sara Benner, Julia Bumguardner, and Berklee Andrews each contributed two.
The Panthers led 32-14 at halftime and outscored Poteet 33-26 in the second half to build the final 25point cushion. Navarro is 6-1 in district play, 19-10 overall. The Panthers continue the 304A schedule Friday with a 6:30 p.m. road contest in Pleasanton.

Seguin girls drop road tilt to No. 12 Patriots (San Antonio) - Seguin's margin for error in the District 26-5A girls basketball playoff race shrank Tuesday night in a 54-28 road loss to San Antonio-Veterans Memorial. The Patriots, ranked No. 12 in TABC 5A state poll, remain firmly atop the 26-5A standings with an 11-0 district record. The loss drops the Matadors to 2-9 in district play, 12-18 overall. The Matadors have to beat fourth-place BoerneChampion (6-4 dist.) on Friday to stay mathematically alive in the race for a playoff berth. Veterans Memorial led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and 30-11 at halftime. The Patriots held Seguin scoreless in the third period to take a 41-11 cushion into the fourth quarter.
Kaitlyn Ranft scored 10 points to lead Seguin. Liv Hernandez added nine, Reese Brittain six, and Tresalyn Roberts three. Seguin hosts Boerne-Champion at Goldie Harris Gym on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Bradley identified two factors that swung her final decision toward the Saints among the multiple schools she considered. “The fact that it’s close to home, I didn’t really want to go super far, and that it’s a four-year university, so it’s something that I can do long term, and not have to transfer, or the hassle of that,” Bradley said.
Bradley has helped Seguin advance a total of eight playoff rounds in three varsity seasons, including a trip to the 5A Region IV semifinals that matched the deepest post-season run in program history last spring. She was a star on Seguin’s Little League World Series team in the summer of 2015. Seguin head coach John Garcia sees every attribute necessary for success as a collegiate student-athlete in Bradley. “I think the biggest thing about Marissa is her focus, and her dedication to what she’s doing, whether it’s in the classroom or on the softball field,” Garcia said. “You spend any time around her, you’ll
see that’s apparent. I’ve never had a kid or a ballplayer that’s been that determined to be successful in both, and she just does it every day, day in and day out.” Our Lady of the Lake competes at the NAIA Division I level. “I’m really excited,” Bradley said. “I’m just there to do whatever the team needs me to do. If that’s support them, play in the field, whatever, I’m ready to do that. My experience, my journey, it’s incredible. It’s something I never would have thought I would have done.” Bradley plans to be a pharmacy major at OLLU.
Navarro boys roll over Poteet in second straight district win (Seguin) - Seguin High School volleyball standout Riley Brittain will continue her playing career at the NCAA Division III level after signing with Howard Payne University last Friday. Brittain was a two-time All-District setter for Seguin. She helped the Matadors win the District 26-5A championship and advance three playoff rounds to the Region IV quarterfinals as a junior in 2018. As a senior last fall, Brittain produced a team-high 684 assists to go with 164 kills and 347 digs. “She’s just done a phenomenal job in leading the program,” Seguin head volleyball coach Kristi Stanley said. “She’s quite, but always does the right thing. Summer strength and conditioning, she was there every single day this last summer. She’s just extremely dedi-
cated, and once we talked after the season and she decided that she’s not ready to hang it up, we got in there and started looking up some schools that she’d be able to play at, and luckily enough, it will work out at Howard Payne.” Brittain says it didn’t take long to commit to Howard Payne once she visited the campus in Brownwood and became acquainted with the Yellow Jackets and head coach Colleen Westfall. “When I first visited, I was a little nervous because of the area, but when I went and played with the team, the chemistry was immediate,” Brittain said. “The girls and I got along really fast. That kind of sold me on it, and the coach as well. I really liked the coach.”
“When I first moved here, I was so scared, but I became such a more confident leader, I was able to get out of my shell more, I became more confident,” Brittain said. “I was able to lead a lot more with the younger girls this year. It was a good learning experience, being able to take charge of a team when you’re new, and they don’t know anything about you.”
Brittain moved to Seguin in the summer of 2018 when
Brittain plans to major in child psychology at Howard Payne.
Marion girls earn first district win (Ingram) - Marion bounced back from an 0-2 start in the District 26-3A girls basketball race to notch a 54-42 road win over Ingram-Moore on Tuesday.
her parents Dusty and Angela took jobs as teachers and coaches at SHS. She had no idea what to expect from a new program and new teammates, but says the experience has been invaluable in her development as a player.
The Bulldogs only led by three, 35-32, at the end of the third quarter, but pulled away for the double-digit win with a 19-10 run in the fourth.
Lizzie Abrameit and Signe Rabenaldt added six points each, with Abrameit contributing a teamhigh seven steals and five rebounds. Sarah Cooke pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds to go with five points and two steals. Annaliese Anderson added three points, Alicia Durbin netted two two, and Toryn Autry chipped in with a made free throw and a pair of steals.
Lily Bek scored 17 points to go with six rebounds and two steals, and Molly Rooke produced a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Marion is 1-2 in district play, 9-18 overall. The Bulldogs head to San Antonio on Friday for a district game against Cole at 6:30 p.m.
