Retailers moving forward with plans for new stores in Seguin

(Seguin) — Seguin’s retail sector continues to grow. Some recently announced stores are moving forward with their plans to build in Seguin.

Hobby Lobby is building a $5.28 million store. The 55,000 sq. ft. store will be part of the new Seguin Crossing shopping center. The new shopping center will be built along the Interstate 10 Frontage Road and Jay

Road, which is an area near the Starbucks located east of State Highway 123 Bypass. The joint venture is being developed by Collett & Associates and the Alexander Family. The city of Seguin, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), and Guadalupe County all worked together to also make that project possible. Retailers, pg. 2

The Spazmatics plan to rock the Seguin Schoolyard Friday Night. Tickets are still available to dance the night away with the popular 80s cover band. See story on page 2.

80s music comes alive with The Spazmatics

Seguin Schoolyard to host popular cover band

(Seguin) – Dancing to some 80s music might just be the thing to warm folks up again. Seguin Schoolyard, formerly, The Backyard, invites local families out Friday night as it presents the popular 80s cover band The Spazmatics. The band described as the ultimate eighties experience will perform at the indoor, outdoor establishment at 225 N. Saunders Street.

Miguel Alvarado, the general manager for Seguin Schoolyard, says the business is excited to welcome the popular band to Seguin. He says the band, equipped with its geeky charm, is always known for providing a great and fun show.

“The Spazmatics…I mean who doesn’t want to actually have a good time with music from the 80s and the 90s and so forth. The Spazmatics bring out a great, great amount of people. These guys are awesome. These guys are good for a community just like Seguin. These guys go all around the U.S. These guys are amazing,” said Alvarado.

Alvarado says Seguin Schoolyard is not only a concert venue but features a collection of local businesses and bar that will also be open that night.

Retailers, continued.

Seguin Crossing is also expected to house an Academy Sports + Outdoors, Five Below, James Avery, and more. Academy has a plan to build a 62,500 sq. ft. store, which represents about a $7 million investment in new construction. Five Below shows plans that it will invest nearly $1 million in its new Seguin location.

The latest details are from filings with the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation. The TDLR website also shows several other retail projects on tap for the city, including Kentucky Fried Chicken, a second O’Reilly Auto Parts, and a third McDonald’s that would be part of a convenience store being built along Highway 46 and Three Oaks Road.

“Please come out. Bring your children. Anyone under the age of 3 gets in for free.  You’ll get to hang out with not just us but also the 10 other businesses that we have here,” said Alvarado.

The concert gets underway at 6 p.m. on Friday. General admission tickets are $17 each and can be purchased at the door or in advance at eventbrite. com. VIP tables for six are limited but still available. A link to purchase tickets can be found on the Seguin Schoolyard Facebook page.

The city has been aggressively pursuing retailers for years, and those efforts are paying off. Several other national retailers have also recently set up shop in Seguin, including Marshalls, Ross Dress for Less, Boot Barn and Harbor Freight.

More are likely to come as the city continues to grow, but other reports about stores coming to the proposed Town Center project on I-10 west of Highway 46 — appear to be premature. New Quest announced years ago its plans to develop the shopping center. It continues to market the development. Those marketing brochures show what potentially could happen at that location, but officials say that doesn’t mean that those stores are coming. It just represents the potential for the project at this time.

Along with retail growth, the city of Seguin is also experiencing significant growth in its housing sector. Several new subdivisions are going up around the city, including the recent announcement of the Walnut Springs subdivision. The neighborhood would be the city’s first master-planned community. It calls for the construction of more than 1,100 new homes, at various price points. It will also include several new amenities that will benefit the entire community, including park space and land for a new fire station. The city recently approved Public Improvement District (PID) with the developer Bitter Blue. The clock is now ticking on that project, and the city says they expect work to be started within the next two years. Retailers, pg. 3

Youth Show to wrap up with auction, live dance

(Seguin) – Organizers of this year’s Guadalupe County Youth Livestock and Homemakers Show are calling on all supporters to come out and help wrap up another great show.

That’s according to Megan Reiley, the co-secretary for the show’s board of directors. Reiley says despite a very cold and snowy start, this week has been fabulous. She says the final part, of course, happens this weekend with the Saturday noon auction.

“For our buyers as we are preparing for our auction tomorrow, the biggest thing we want to re-stress is just registering as a buyer. That’s going to give us their contact information. It’s going to have them plugged in so when they get onto the auction floor to purchase things, they are registered and ready to go. If anybody wants to put any amount of money on an exhibitor whether it’s $10$100—anything like that – they do have to register as a buyer even if they have been a buyer before in previous years. Everyone has to reregister every year,” said Reiley.

The show, which began Monday, features 1,603 entries from approximately 600 exhibitors. The students each represent the various FFA and 4H groups throughout Guadalupe County and surrounding areas. Reiley says this year’s show includes baked foods, photography, handicrafts, needlework, agricultural mechanics, plus live animals.

In addition to showing their support, folks are also encouraged to help celebrate with a live dance this Saturday featuring music by Clint Taft and the

Retailers, continued.

City Attorney Mark Kennedy walked the council through the adoption of the PID on Tuesday night, it includes language that would dissolve it if the developer doesn’t move in time.

“So, the first item involves two agreements, or a resolution and an agreement. There’s a resolution to create the Public Improvement District, the petition for which you received in December or last month. And then there’s a corresponding dissolution agreement that we’re asking you to authorize tonight, if you create the PID. The dissolution agreement would be an agreement currently and presently to dissolve the created PID if nothing is done within two years of its creation — effectively, two years from tonight. That is not something we’re expecting. Were expecting this to proceed,” said Kennedy.

City leaders say the growth in the city largely aligns with what people have said they wanted in Seguin and also reflects the city’s comprehensive, downtown and economic development master plans.

Buck Wild Band. Reiley says although the location has changed this year, organizers plan for another fun time.

“Typically, the Saturday night after the auction, the K.C. Hall has the big kind of after-auction dance. Well, this year, the dance is going to be held on the dance slab pavilion here on the grounds. The K.C. Hall is still putting that on. They are selling tickets. You can buy them here at the concession stands if you are on the grounds or you can buy them at the door Saturday night after the auction. Definitely bring the kids, bring your family, come and enjoy some music, dancing and just kind of celebrate a really fantastic week and a fabulous auction,” said Reiley.

The youth show dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight. Saturday.  Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door.

Seguin quarterback Corey Dailey locks down first Power 4 offer

(Seguin) -- Seguin High School multi-sport athlete Corey Dailey has received his first Power 4 college football offer.

The Seguin quarterback announced on social media that he has received an offer from the Pitt Panthers. Pittsburgh offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kade Bell visited Seguin High School on Wednesday and made the offer to Dailey.

As a junior this past season, Dailey was named the District 13-5A Offensive MVP. In three years as Seguin’s starting quarterback, Dailey has thrown for 6,189 yards with 78 touchdowns and just 18 interceptions.

The Pitt Panthers are a member of the ACC. Led by head coach Pat Narduzzi, the Panthers went 7-6 in 2024. They ended their season with a 48-46 loss in six overtimes to Toledo in the GameAbove Sports Bowl. The six overtimes set the record for the most overtime periods in an FBS bowl game.

The offer from Pitt is Dailey’s 5th. He also has college football offers from Division I schools Texas State, UTSA, UTRGV and Incarnate Word.

Dailey is also a star on the Matador basketball team. He currently leads the Matadors in scoring and rebounding, pouring in 22.4 points and pulling down 9.3 boards per game. The Matadors have won six in a row and are in a four-way tie for first place in District 27-5A with Jefferson, Highlands and Edison with six games left in the season.

VITAL STATISTICS

Gesick

Edward “John” Gesick Jr., a decorated U.S. Army veteran, teacher, historian, and passionate advocate for the preservation of local history, died on January 13, 2025, at the age of 81.

Surrounded by his family, he passed peacefully.

John was born on March 16, 1943, in Washington, D.C., while his father was stationed at the Pentagon during World War II.

After the war, his family lived in Chicago before settling in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1961, then went on to Texas A&I (now Texas A&M Kingsville), where he earned a degree in History with a minor in Spanish in 1965. Later, he earned a Master of Education from Boston University in 1979.

Immediately after college, John was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army, where he would serve for 14 years, earning numerous accolades for his service. As a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, he deployed to Vietnam, where he was seriously injured in combat. After being sent back to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio for surgery and rehabilitation, John spent part of his recovery working on his father’s farm in Seguin. It was during this time that he made a vow to one day settle in Seguin, a promise he would fulfill in his later years.

John’s military career also took him to several other postings, including Panama; Seoul,South Korea; Grafenwoehr, Germany, and Fort Huachuca in Arizona, where he taught at the Army Intelligence School. He earned numerous military honors, including the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars (one with valor), two Army Commendation Medals with valor, and a

Meritorious Service Medal. He was a proud Green Beret, and his dedication to service remained central to his life.

Following his service in the Army, John returned to Texas in 1979, settling on his family farm in Seguin, building a house, raising cattle, and harvesting pecans. He began his second career as an educator. He taught Texas History, World History, and Psychology at Seguin High School and later at Texas Lutheran College, where he was respected by students for his passion and deep knowledge of the subject matter. He was also an active member of the local community, serving as Chairman of the Guadalupe Historical Commission and Rotary Club president. His commitment to preserving the history of Seguin, Guadalupe County, and Texas led him to write several books, including Under the Live Oak Tree; Seguin and Guadalupe County; Historic Guadalupe County; and The Kickapoo: Keepers of Tradition. He was instrumental in the founding of the Heritage Museum of Seguin, a project that was close to his heart, and he remained a dedicated advocate for local history throughout his retirement.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Polly Pinneo Gesick; his father, Edward John Gesick; and his brother, William Henry Gesick. He is survived by his four children, Kimberly (Jeff) Canfield, Laura (Theron) Gesick, Christine (Allen) Long, and Patrick Gesick; nine grandchildren: Cole Canfield; Cameron and Griffin Carlin; Sophie, Graham, Claire, and Amelia Long; Abigael and Blaise Gesick, as well as his niece and many friends.

Trump Rescinds Biden Admin Order To Study How To Lower Prescription Costs

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is rescinding a Biden-era executive order that researched how to lower prescription medication costs. Biden’s order asked the Health and Human Services secretary to explore “new health care payment and delivery models that would lower drug costs and promote access to innovative drug therapies.” Trump got rid of the directive on day one of his presidency, along with other executive orders in place that he deemed “unpopular, inflationary, illegal, and radical.”

State Dept. Removes Webpage To Select Gender Marker

(Undated) -- It appears the State Department is already making changes to its website that reflect President Trump’s executive orders against transgender people. A webpage titled “Selecting your gender marker” for people applying for a passport or updating it -- looks to have been removed. The page now redirects users to a general passport information page. As recently as Tuesday morning, users could select male, female or unspecified or another gender identity as the gender marker on their U.S. passport books and cards. Trump signed an executive order Monday that declared the federal government will recognize only two sexes -- male and female.
