TLU Tennis season opens this week!
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran tennis is set to begin its 2023 schedule in a dual match at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, Jan. 27.
The 2023 spring schedule features home dual match contests against nine teams for men’s tennis and eight teams for women’s tennis. The TLU Tennis schedule features three teams featured in the ITA Preseason Top 40 poll, including a home dual meet against ranked Colby College on Mar. 20.
The Bulldogs stay on the road for their second dual match of the spring as they travel to Abilene to take on the McMurry War Hawks (Feb. 4), before opening their home slate against East Texas Baptist on Feb. 10. Texas Lutheran will take on ranked-opponents in their next two matches, opening SCAC play with dual matches against Southwestern (Feb. 11) and Trinity (TX) (Feb. 18). The Bulldogs close the month of February with a home non-conference match against Mary Hardin-Baylor (Feb. 25).
Texas Lutheran returns to conference play with a road match against Austin College (Mar. 4). Five of the next six matches will then be at TLU’s OhlenbuschRinn Tennis Center, starting with Concordia (TX) on March 10, followed by ranked Colby College on March 20, then conference foe St. Thomas (TX) (Mar. 24), Whitworth (Mar. 28), and Sul Ross State (Mar. 31) to close out the stretch of five straight home matches. TLU Men’s Tennis will play an additional home match against Grove City College on March 7.
April will feature three conference matches ahead of the conference tournament, two road matches against Schreiner (Apr. 1) and Colorado College (Apr. 21), and the final home match of the season against Dallas on April 15. The 2023 SCAC Tournament will take place at Southwestern University from April 28-30.
Texas Lutheran men’s tennis boasts a revamped roster featuring only two players from last year’s squad while women’s tennis adds three freshmen and sophomore transfer, Allie Speyrer (Shallowater/Shallowater/Hardin-Simmons), to a group of six returners. Texas Lutheran will be led by first-year head coach David Mueller, who spent the last three seasons as the assistant tennis coach, and brings over 40 years of coaching experience to the Bulldogs after serving as head tennis coach at nearby New Braunfels High School where the Unicorns won 25 individual state championships and eight team tennis state championships across the 5A and 6A levels during his tenure.
