In a written statement released to the KWED and the Seguin Daily News, Carter states, “it occurs to me that the district is entering a period of unprecedened growth which will require long hours, weeks, months and years of very energetic leadership. It also occurs to me that, God willing, I will celebrate my 74th birthday in May. It is high time for me to step aside and allow you to bring new leadership to the district, so I am submitting my resignation, to be effective May 31, 2020.” In her statement, Carter also shares her

“I am very proud to have been a part of this extraordinary school district and privileged to work for a Board of Trustees that honors its commitment to students, staff, and community. You have balanced conflicting interest and established priorities with great integrity, thoughtfulness and fairness. With your unfailing support and the hard work of the NISD faculty and staff, our students are achieving success in academics, athletics, band and the many activities you have provided for them. You can expect to continue to build on that success. I wish you the very best as you plan for exciting times ahead. I will watch with anticipation from a distance!" Carter has been applauded for leading the district in a positive direction throughout the years. The Seguin Daily News looks to hear more from Carter about her decision to step down at the end of the school year. Carter is currently attending an out of town school conference. Carter, later on this week, will talk more about this decision and what it means for the Navarro ISD. Carter’s letter of resignation was acknowledged during Monday night’s meeting of the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees.

Wild Game Chili Dinner fundraiser to benefit Trinity Oaks Guadalupe River Camp

CHILI DINNER, continued from page 1 "We started basically when we launched the camp here in Seguin and so, this fundraiser is our biggest one of the year. It kind of sets our whole year in play as far as our fundraising efforts and the reason it is so important is because the camp doesn't charge for youth, faith or veteran based non-profits to utilize the camp. So, this is a big one for us. This helps us maintain the camp and hopefully, add additional things to the camp as we continue to grow. Anytime, we do an event here in Seguin or local areas, it's crucial for us a non-profit. We had well over 2,000 people come out last year to the camp and were able to utilize the camp and we don't ask for a penny in return so the only way we can continue to do that

is by doing these types of events and raising the much needed funds," said Holder. Trinity Oaks’ is a 20-acre private facility situated along the Guadalupe River at 209 Caddell Ln located off of Highway 90 East. The camp is currently building accommodation facilities that are fully handicap-accessible for "youth camps and retreats for military heroes." Holder says there are two different price levels for guests to consider at this weekend's fundraiser. He says no matter which one they choose, they're guaranteed an evening of good food and family fun.

“We’ll get those little devils!”

"The $10 ticket gets you into the event. We have over 10 different types of chili and then of course refreshments, water, tea and we will also have some desserts there as well. We will have bucket raffles, drawings for different types of firearms and different items and then the $20 ticket that is for those who are 21 and older that would like to have a beer or a margarita and they'll have the ability to drink beer and drink the margaritas throughout the evening. So there are two different levels there and then of course kids 12 and under are free. We are not asking for a ticket for them but it's everyone else that is $10 and $20. Then we'll also have some youth events going on. We have an indoor bb gun range and we will be doing some archery tournaments that are $5 a try and then we have some

pretty awesome prizes for the kids," said Holder. Holder says the local river camp is determined to host even more groups this coming year. He says the camp has played host to thousands of kids, churches and veterans. "We have a lot of repeat customers that come out but as a non-profit, it is important to have a facility that you can utilize like that because not all the nonprofits have an expense fund that they can take their groups to so it's an extremely important facility I believe for Seguin and the county," said Holder. The fundraiser will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. at The Big Red Barn located at 390 Cordova Rd. Tickets will be available at the door.

Property recovered after man caught looking into vehicles By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (McQueeney) -- A local man is behind bars after burglarizing vehicles from an area neighborhood. Guadalupe County Sheriff's officials say Paul Anthony Ramirez, 24, was arrested late Monday night after he was caught removing items from vehicles that were left unlocked in the McQueeney Estates. Investigators say the sheriff's office at around 1:30 a.m. Monday had

received several calls reporting that a male subject in a black hoodie and baggy blue jeans was looking in vehicles. They say one of those complainants had observed Ramirez in his pickup. When asked what he was doing, Ramirez reportedly stated that he was looking for change. After confronting the man, they said Ramirez walked away from the vehicle. Upon arriving in the 100 block of

Pecan Loop, deputies located the subject, identified as Ramirez. Upon searching his person, deputies located various personal items such as GP's, cell phones, loose change, tools, pills in a baggy along with drug paraphernalia. Investigators say they believe that there may still be more victims within the McQueeney Estates who have not yet reported items missing. The items that deputies were able to locate for owners have since been placed in the

evidence room for owners to claim. Those who believe they are the owners of some of those items are asked to contact the sheriff's office at 830-379-1224.

Bulldogs nationally ranked to start 2019 baseball season TOP 25, continued from page 4 Among the key returners for TLU is right-fielder Tyler Cauley, a threeyear starter, two-time All-Region selection and 2018 All-American. The senior from Baytown, Texas (Barbers Hill) enters his final year with the Bulldogs with a career average of .342 and career numbers of 23 home runs, 131 RBI, 35 doubles, 13 triples, 152 hits, 111 runs, 77 walks, and a career slugging percentage of .635. Cauley, already sixth all-time at TLU for homers, is 10 home runs from moving into second place all-time. Already tied for second all-time for career triples, he is seven triples from breaking the school’s career mark of 20.

Cauley is on the cusp of moving into the university’s career top-five for RBI, doubles, slugging percentage, total bases, runs, at-bats, and walks. Seven other position starters return to join Cauley in 2020. The Bulldogs will have a pair of Gold Glove defenders on defense. Motsinger did not make an error in 124 total chances last season. He also hit .327 with eight doubles, four triples, a home run, 39 runs scored, and 31 RBI. Fifth-year senior catcher Spencer Brandt (Yoakum/Yoakum) won the Gold Glove as the best NCAA D3 catcher in 2018. Brandt has played in

97 career games for the Bulldogs and has played error-free baseball in each of the last two seasons. He hasn’t made an error since April 21, 2017. The remaining position starters include: first baseman Cole Irby (Honorable Mention All-SCAC), second baseman Austin Colon (First Team All-SCAC), shortstop Joe Jimenez (SCAC Freshman of the Year, Second Team All-SCAC), and outfielder/infielder Blade Strzelczyk (Honorable Mention All-SCAC). The Bulldogs also return designated hitter Nick Gardoni (Honorable Mention All-SCAC). The pitching staff lost two-time AllAmerican Nathan Malinovsky and the veteran arms of Drew Waller, Cody Rimko, and Dylan Murrell. Those four departed seniors combined for 17 victories and eight saves in 2019.

The Bulldogs bring back to the mound sophomore left-hander Matthew Hickey, an SCAC AllTournament selection and All-SCAC Honorable Mention choice. Hickey tied for the team lead in wins, with six, in 2019. He went 6-1 with a 2.39 ERA in 49 innings of work. Opponents hit just .239 against him. Joe Burch, Riley Backs, Landon Weatherly, Logan Fisher, Chase Cutler, Zach Perry, and Corey Golan all return after seeing varsity action on the mound in 2019. Weatherly, a senior from Granbury (Granbury), is 6-3 with two saves in his Bulldog career. He has a career ERA of 4.00 in 90 innings pitched. Backs started the third-most games for TLU last season. The

sophomore left-hander made 13 total appearances and six starts in his freshman campaign. He went 1-0 with a 5.34 ERA. He struck out 17 in 30.1 innings of work. The Bulldogs will be led once again by Greg Burnett, who starts his 13th season as the team’s head coach. Burnett was named the SCAC Baseball Coach of the Year in 2019. Counting nine years as an assistant coach with TLU Baseball, Burnett is in his 22nd year with the Bulldogs. Burnett is 337-186 in his previous 12 seasons with the Bulldogs. He is third all-time in TLU career baseball victories and second all-time in TLU baseball winning percentage (.644). Burnett is 162-69 (.701) all-time in conference play.

Coronavirus Death Toll Rises

FDA Warns Purell To Stop Claiming It Can Eliminate The Flu

(Beijing) -- The death toll from the coronavirus in China has passed 100. China's health officials say at least 106 people have died from the respiratory illness. Thousands of others have been infected. The disease has found its way to the U.S. with five confirmed cases so far. Dozens of people are being tested for the illness, but the CDC notes the coronavirus hasn't spread through human-to-human contact here. All of the U.S. patients were recently in the area of China where the outbreak is centralized.

(Akron, OH) -- A popular hand sanitizer is being warned to stop saying it can fight off the flu. The FDA says Purell's claims to help eliminate the flu, MRSA or Ebola are unproven. It sent a warning letter pointing out the claims basically compare over-the-counter sanitizer to prescription drugs. The products at issue include Purell's advanced gel along with the gentle and free foam. The FDA says these products are commonly sold for schools and offices.

US Monitors Dozens For Possible Coronavirus Infections

CDC: More Than Half Of Flu Cases Hitting Kids, Young Adults

(Undated) -- U.S. health officials are monitoring over a hundred people for the coronavirus. The CDC said dozens of people are still undergoing tests to see if they've come down with the respiratory illness. Five cases of the disease have been confirmed in the U.S., but those people had all recently visited China, where the outbreak is centralized. So far, there haven't been cases of human-to-human transmission in the U.S.

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says more than half of flu cases this season are hitting children and adults under 25. It estimates there've been more than 15-million flu illnesses this season with 82-hundred deaths. Fifty-four children have died of the flu including two students at the Utah Military Academy. Flu is widespread in 35 states, plus New York City and Puerto Rico.

Timothy “Tim” King Hartzog, Sr.

Tim served as a rigger, stuffing parachutes for himself and fellow guardsman. After his training brought him back to Texas, Tim began working for his brother Wayne, in the family grocery store in Lockhart, TX, for what would be a 30 year career in the grocery business. Shortly thereafter, Tim met and fell for Lois Marie Groeschel, who he married on June 21, 1970, going on to have two sons, Timothy King, Jr. and Terry Keith. After a few years in Lockhart, the family would move to Luling, TX in 1972 where Tim would run another family grocery store and raise his family.

Timothy “Tim” King Hartzog, Sr., 72, of Seguin, TX left this earth on Saturday, January 25, 2020. Tim was born on March 13, 1947 to Arthur Purvis “Mike” and Mary Ruth Hartzog in Rio Hondo, TX, the fifth of six children. He spent his early childhood years in Rio Hondo until going to attend and graduate high school at the San Marcos Baptist Academy. After beginning school at Southwest Texas University, he decided to join the Army National Guard. He went to training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then served at Camp Mabry in Austin, TX from 1968 until 1974. As part of his time in the Guard,

In 1991, the family moved to Brownsville, TX to be closer to the family’s expanded grocery business, where Tim continued working with brothers Wayne and Jerry until the family business was sold in 1999. After 18 total years in Brownsville, Tim and Lois moved to Seguin in 2009. When he wasn’t working, Tim enjoyed being outdoors, whether doing yard work, fixing anything and everything – whether his, friends or neighbors’ stuff - fishing, as well as an unending passion for golf, which consumed almost every afternoon throughout his retirement. If not for a lifetime of obviously defective putters, Tim would have approached being a scratch golfer. Beyond his outdoor endeavors, Tim loved his wife Lois of 49 years like no other. He could and would do anything

to make sure she was cared for and truly was the most precious gift of his life. For many years, they took an annual trip together with Tim’s mother, brothers and spouses, taking them to destinations around the world, having 30+ years of pictures and memories of great times together.

OBITS, continued

Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann

Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann (age 90) passed peacefully from this earth on January 22, 2020 at Brookdale Spicewood Springs Care facility in Austin after battling congestive heart and kidney failure. Kenneth was born on a farm outside of Seguin, Texas, the second of 3 children, to William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann. He was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel's Lutheran Church in Seguin. He attended school at the historic "Tiemann School," one of the "original" turn of the century 1 room wooden framed school houses built in 1903 on land donated by his grandfather Theodore Tiemann. The school is listed and plaqued in the Texas Historical Register. Kenneth played high school football for the Seguin Matadors and upon graduation attended Texas Lutheran University (then College) in Seguin where he continued his football career for the TLC Bulldogs. This is where he met the love of his life, Charlene Ann Nelle, at the Varsity Inn (not a hotel, but a hang out for TLC college students). Charlene and Kenneth had much in common. Both blue-eyed blond, good-looking of German-Lutheran descent and raised on small farms, they had a shared goal of succeeding in life and never returning to the farm. Kenneth, when asked about Charlene, said “I would have never had the courage to ask her out. She asked me out to the Sadie Hawkins Dance. And it was her idea that we

WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM marry,” which occurred September 3, 1950. Once Kenneth finished the 2 year college, he transferred to the University of Texas at Austin to study Pharmacy. Life was a struggle. There were stories about staying in a 1 room unheated sleeping porch, splitting 25 cent chopped beef sandwiches at the Student Union and only possessing 1 pair of trousers. Charlene worked at a bank while Kenneth finished his degree (1952) and then Kenneth worked at the Student Health Center (19551961) while Charlene finished her degree. He also earned his Master's Degree in Hospital Pharmacy (1959) during this time, and served in the Naval Reserves for 8 years, receiving an Honorable Discharge in March 1950. Daughter Terri Lynn came in 1957 while during the same year purchasing their first home on West 49th ½ in Austin. 1960 proved to be an important year in their young lives. Scraping together money from parents and relatives, they purchased Hyde Park Pharmacy on Guadalupe Street from Bohls & Kuhn. Again another big year due to the arrival of their second daughter, Lisa Kathryn. Also, due to the "Veteran's Land Scandal" Kenneth & Charlene were able to purchase at auction 1,000 +/- acres of Guadalupe County land and justly named "The Big T Ranch." The same year Dr. Tiemann began his almost 60 year career in the profession of pharmacy. While owning and operating a community pharmacy, he also directed pharmacy services at Brown Schools for Exceptional Children as well as the Westminster Hospital in west Austin. He served as pharmacy consultant to more than 30 nursing homes and extended care facilities. Dr. Tiemann played a crucial role in developing early regulations of consultant pharmacy practice. He became a recognized authority on the provision of pharmaceutical service in nursing homes. He served his profession in scores of leadership roles, including presidencies of the Capital Area and Texas Pharmaceutical Associations, TPA Pharmacist of the Year, the APhA Board of Trustees, 2 committees of the National Association of Retail Druggists and president of the American Pharmaceutical Association.

In 1974 Kenneth rejoined the faculty of UT Pharmacy School as an adjunct professor and instructed students for many years in consulting and other clinical aspects of pharmacy practice. He was an early member of the Advisory Council of the Pharmaceutical Foundation, precursor to the current Pharmacy Advisory Council serving from 1963-1969. He is featured in the book “Pharmacy's Foundation in Texas: A History of the College of Pharmacy 1893-1976" listing his contributions to the College. During all of his highly visible positions his steadfast message was “to preserve, protect and defend the profession of pharmacy". He was said to be “passionate in the love of the profession of pharmacy”. In 1974 he was awarded he Daniel B. Smith Award- the highest honor the Academy of General Practice of Pharmacy that can be bestowed on a community practitioner. Said by AGP President Donald O. Fedder“Mr. Tiemann has established himself as a leader in the profession since his student days. His contribution to pharmacy practice and education, and his continuous service to organized pharmacy at the local, state and national levels leave no doubt that he is totally dedicated to the enrichment of the profession". Dr. Tiemann continued his pharmacy practice and education earning his PhD in Healthcare Administration, lecturing students, etc. eventually selling Hyde Park Pharmacy to American Pharmaceutical Services. He continued to work as a nursing home consultant for APS until age 82. The culmination of his professional career occurred in 2012 when Kenneth was honored and received the Legend of Pharmacy Award from UT College of Pharmacy. This award is given to persons whose contributions to the profession of pharmacy are "Above & beyond and considered legendary”. What a send off! Kenneth never really retired. When he wasn't working – he was still working. He found time to be very active at his church- St. Martins Lutheran Church in Austin serving on numerous committees and eventually President of the Church Council. He was a distinguished alumnus at TLU, establishing a scholarship fund for theology stu-

dents. Kenneth was also an active alumnus and supporter of Longhorn sports, especially football - Hook 'em Horns! He was an avid supporter of his girls, Terri and Lisa, through their school years and Camp Mystic years. He loved hunting trips, especially the annual trip to the Glass Mountains to hunt mule deer with his west Texas friends. He was honored to be a member of the “Straight 8” a group of 8 old friends in Seguin who would meet monthly to "Pontificate and prevaricate.” By far, however, the majority of his life non-working/working time was spent with his wife of 68 years Charlene at the ranch. Having developed half of this land in Guadalupe County themselves (which was no small task) they enjoyed the other half immensely. They raised cows (Piedmontese, Brahma, Black Angus, as well as Appaloosa Horses), they built Aframe cabins, rode horses, sold cows, hunted deer and dove, joined Adopt-A-Highway and “Jeeped around” on His & Her tractors. Kenneth always told his girls they would find black gold (oil) under that ranch. What they did find was the dome of the Carrizo aquifer which is blessed with lots, and lots of sweet water. Instead of oil wells, Kenneth & Charlene developed this desolate, sandy land into very productive & commercially viable water wells. For those of you who knew him, he could not converse very long without mentioning his family. Daughter Terri followed in his footsteps graduating from UT Pharmacy School with High Honors. She went on to study medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Terri has a private Rheumatology practice in New Braunfels, Texas. Like her father, Lisa is also a UT graduate – BSN, RN who worked in Houston 24 years as a Legal Nurse Consultant. Twelve years ago Lisa moved to Austin to care for Charlene & Kenneth as their health began to fail. During this period Lisa has been employed at St. David's - North Austin Medical Center. Terri's son and #1 grandson William James “BJ” Steele III is

13 Chief Neurosurgery Resident at Methodist Hospital in Houston. Charlene and Kenneth were their happiest cheering for their grandson at all of his many sporting events (baseball, basketball, track and most of all football) He and his wife Melissa Letsos Steele – BSN, RN added 3 great-grandchildren to the family- William James (Wills) Steele IV (4), Park Edward Steele (2) and Millicent (Millie) Letsos Steele (6 mo). Kenneth lost his dear wife Charlene on December 11, 2018. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dr. William Herald Tiemann and his nephew Andrew Tiemann. He is survived by his sister Helen Marie Kolb of Seguin, Texas, Daughter Dr. Terri Tiemann Meeks and her husband Charles Shannon Meeks of New Braunfels, Texas, daughter Lisa Kathryn Tiemann of Austin, Texas, grandson Dr. William James Steele III and wife Melissa Letsos Steele of Houston, Texas, their children William James Steele IV, Park Edward Steele and Millicent Letsos Steele. Also survived by nieces and nephews Drew and Margie Traeger, Kevin and Elizabeth Kolb, Steve and Malia Tiemann, Karen and Bill Blackwell, many loving cousins and a host of other family and friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Connie, Cynthia, Olivia, Kimberly, and Cordelia for their loving care, compassion, and friendship as his personal care providers. A visitation will be held at CookWalden Funeral Home on February 1, 2020 starting at 2:00 p.m. – 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin Texas, 78752. A funeral service will additionally be held at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church on February 2, 2020 starting at 2:00 p.m., with reception to follow – 606 West 15th Street, Austin Texas, 78701.
