Remarkable’ s ownership shakes things up at local nursing home

Big money, big winner

(Seguin) -- A new company has taken over the reins of Remarkable Healthcare, located at 1339 Eastwood Drive across from Wal-Mart.

Riverbend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center acquired the local facility, basically overnight, after the former

owners—according to some employees—failed to financially manage the company.

The civil matter, which reportedly last week also involved the Seguin Police Department, has since been tangled in legal matters –

A Seguin resident has hit the jackpot after scratching a winning $1 million lottery ticket. According to the Texas Lottery Commission, the winning Million Dollar Loteria ticket was purchased at the Stripes Store located at 204 Loop 337 in New Braunfels. Officials say the winner has chosen to remain anonymous. Lottery officials say the overall odds of winning any prize in the game are one in 3.29. They say this is the fourth of 10 top prizes worth $1 million to be claimed in this particular game. The game offers a total of $384 million in prizes.

Seguin ISD Trustee works to address concerns of parents, community

(Seguin) – A member of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is helping parents better navigate their way to ensuring that their concerns and/or questions are being addressed by the local district. In a statement read publicly during Thursday’s board meeting, District 7 Trustee Josh Bright personally reassured the community that when issues arise, they are being taken seriously.

He says with the desire to maintain transparency, it’s also important to remember, however, that they must also respect the privacy of all individuals involved.

That’s why he believes that folks looking for quick responses and better results should refrain from first addressing them on social media if at all possible.

Bright stated, “Additionally, we recognize that members of our community may choose to discuss and share their perspectives on social media platforms. While we understand that these platforms can serve as a space for open dialogue, we want to emphasize that the school district cannot respond to or address specific issues through

social media. We kindly ask that you continue to use the designated reporting methods provided by the district to ensure that your concerns are properly documented and addressed. This approach allows us to maintain the privacy and wellbeing of our students and staff while promoting open communication and fostering a collaborative environment.”

Bright tells the Seguin Daily News that the district is not only working harder to address issues, but they are constantly working on providing even more resources

toward finding solutions.

“What I am asking them to do is use the resources that we already have in place. Our website is a plethora of information. You can spend days upon days on the website. We just released the new website. It’s been about a year. We’ve still been making some improvements on it, and we are still working for improvements. We get feedback from the community of ‘hey, we’d like to see this’ but I think it’s really easy to navigate. You just have to spend some time on it and if there is something not on our webpage, we have fantastic staff at Central Office. Just call them. All the phone numbers for the different departments are listed on the website. Email addresses for all the board members are on the website. There’s so much information on our website. It just doesn’t get utilized as much as it should be.”

Bright, who personally addressed the public at the end of the meeting, added that trust and cooperation were essential in maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all students throughout the district.

Cibolo PD investigates suspicious incident involving student

(Cibolo) – Students and families on the county’s west end remain vigilant as Cibolo Police Investigators continue to look into a recent incident in which an 11-yearold female student says she was allegedly grabbed by an unknown suspect while on her way to school.

Cibolo Police officials say the incident was reported at 6:57 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 at Jordan Intermediate School.

Officials say the student reported that while riding her bicycle to school in the 200 block of Cordero Drive, an unknown black male approached her and grabbed the back of her hoodie and the handlebars of her bicycle. The student stated that she kicked the suspect to get away and managed to ride her bike to the back entrance of Jordan Intermediate. She immediately reported the incident to school administrators. The suspect was identified as a black male with a white beard, wearing a red shirt and black shorts.

Remarkable, continued.

Cibolo officers have initiated an investigation and are actively working to gather more information. Officers patrolled the area but were unable to locate anyone matching the suspect’s description. Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate any functioning cameras in the area.

The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Cibolo Police Department at 210-619-1274.

This incident came almost one week after an attempted kidnapper who allegedly tried to lure a 10-yearold boy into a vehicle in Schertz was found and arrested. The Schertz Police Department says the suspect, Ismael Ortega Quiroz, 33, of San Antonio was arrested two days after they received a report of a suspicious person in a white van who had attempted to lure the child into the vehicle in the 2500 block of Barr Way.

Following the description of the

legal matters that for the last few days have helped to create disgruntled employees who have also not yet been paid by Remarkable.

According to employees, their paychecks should have been received on Friday. During this quick rollover in ownership, Riverbend appears to be providing hope and promise to the current facility and its employees.

When contacted by Seguin Radio KWED, Riverbend’s Chris Martin confirmed that on Monday afternoon employees had been told that they were going to be paid. He stated, “they are going to be taken care of, and the employees are not going to go without.”

Due to the legal issues surrounding the acquisition and pending litigation against Remarkable, the exact details as to when those paychecks will arrive in employees’ hands could not fully be disclosed; although some employees were told they would arrive this Wednesday, if not sooner.

Also because of legal proceedings, Riverbend was unable to say exactly who would be covering the payroll as it was initially Remarkable’s responsibility.

Despite the wranglings between the companies, Martin says Riverbend is committed to taking care of its new employees and hopes this latest news relieves

suspect and the vehicle, the white van was located a couple of days later at a construction site around the area of the initial report.

Meanwhile, the Cibolo Police Department encourages parents to discuss personal safety with their children utilizing the following tips.

-Stay Aware: Pay attention to your surroundings, especially when traveling alone.

• Stick to Safe Routes: Use well-traveled and well-lit paths when walking or biking to school.

• Travel in Pairs: Whenever possible, walk or bike with friends or family members.

• React Quickly: If approached by a stranger, yell, run, or take any action to get away and attract attention.

• Report Immediately: Always tell a trusted adult or authority figure about any concerning situations right away.

any anxiety or fear that they may have. As for the services being provided at the facility, Martin reassures families that there is no issue with compliance or care.

“Residents have not expressed any concerns with care. We have physicians there taking care of them. We have hired on more staff than what was there before. We brought the facility into compliance, and we are happy to be there,” said Martin.

Prior to this latest shakeup, employees say they had been seeing periodic signs of a financial crisis after some folks were told to “wait to cash their checks.”

According to reports, Seguin was the last operation in what was a string of other small, troubled facilities under the ownership of Remarkable Healthcare, a company owned and operated by Laurie Beth and Jon McPike of Southlake.

The company last spring was reportedly forced to relinquish its other Texas properties after filing for bankruptcy.

Navarro ISD names new athletic director

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD has a new athletic director and football coach.

The district’s board of trustees announced on Monday the selection of Glenn Hill as the district’s new AD and head football coach at Navarro High School. Hill comes to Navarro after serving as the offensive coordinator at Smithson Valley High School for the last four years.

District Superintendent Mandy Epley made the following statement in press release from the Navarro ISD,

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Hill to the Panther Family.” said Epley. “His experience, proven leadership, and commitment to student success aligns with our district’s vision as well as the ideal coaching profile collaboratively created

by our students, parents, and community. He is committed to investing in Navarro ISD to develop and grow our athletic programs through strong teacher-coaches and a culture that celebrates

engagement and excellence for boys’ and girls’ sports at all levels. I am confident that Coach Hill will continue the values, tradition and legacy of Navarro athletics while building elevated opportunities and experiences for our studentathletes both on and off the field.”

Hill is expected to assume his new role the first week of February. A community Meet and Greet is scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 6:30pm in the Navarro High School cafeteria.

Hill replaces Rod Blount, who left the district after seven years as head football coach and athletic director to take the same positions at George West ISD. Blount led the Panthers to at least the area round of the playoffs in each of his years as head coach.
