Child brings narcotics to local elementary school

(Seguin) -- A local elementary school student was transported to the Guadalupe County Juvenile Probation Department after allegedly bringing a bag of cocaine to her classroom.

Seguin Police Detectives say at 9:43 a.m. Wednesday, a Seguin Police Department officer assigned as a School Resource Officer (SRO) at Jefferson Elementary School was notified by school administrators regarding the

possible presence of narcotics on campus. Upon arriving at the school, the officer was presented with a small, clear bag containing a white substance that was discovered in a classroom. A field test of the substance was conducted, which confirmed it to be cocaine hydrochloride. The bag was reportedly discovered and turned in by another student who found the drugs inside a desk.

Fall Break to be included in Seguin ISD calendar

Trustees approve instrumental days for 2025-2026

(Seguin) -- Here’s one more thing to add to your fall calendar if you are a parent or guardian of a Seguin ISD student.

Look for students to be off an entire week during Fall Break Oct. 6-10. The week, which coincides with the start of the Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo, will be the newest addition to the newly approved 2025-2026 school calendar.

Although the school calendar was approved by the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees, it was not unanimous. Voting against the calendar were Trustees William Dwyer, Lisa Burns and Josh Bright. Burns questioned the burden that it could create for many working families, especially here in Seguin, which is deemed as a manufacturing community.

During the meeting, Dwyer was unable to get a clear answer from district officials as to why the district committee in charge of coming up with the calendar proposed an entire Fall Break.

“Like Mrs. Burns said, what are we going to do with our children while we are going to work, and they are not at school? So, that’s definitely a problem for me and especially since there was no rationale in the question that I asked of why are we going to take a whole week off? I always appreciate participating in the fair and all that kind of stuff but at the same time, I wasn’t seeing a need for an entire week. But that’s why I voted against it,” said Dwyer.

Also, not clear in understanding the rationale for these days, Bright felt that perhaps the days could have been better scheduled – still giving

time off to students and staff during the fall semester.

“I don’t feel that the Fall Break is necessary, and I also think that I liked the other calendar that I saw because it still had five days off, but it was like two days (Thursday, Friday) and then one day, (Monday) which is right around the fair. I think it’s great. I love the fact that we get a day off for the fair and then

the fair and then maybe the Monday off because it’s a big weekend. But I don’t think the whole week leading up to the fair weekend we need off and I think a lot of the manufacturers that we have and a lot of the parents that we have in the community – that they didn’t vote for whatever reason -- but when see the calendar and Calendar, pg. 4

Lessons led by faith

Sunday, St. James Catholic School kicked off Catholic Schools Week with an Open House and a Mass led by members of the student body. National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. On Monday, students made Valentine's cards for local community leaders. On Tuesday, they had a Game Day, and middle school students took cards to the fire and police stations. On Wednesday morning, the school also

After conducting a thorough investigation with the assistance of school administrators, the officer identified a female juvenile as the individual who brought the substance to campus.

Following standard procedures, the girl was released to the county juvenile probation department’s custody and formally charged with possession of a substance in penalty group 1 in a Drug-Free Zone.

No official response from the district was provided. However, Jefferson Principal Maria Guerra notified the school’s parents of the incident.

In the letter, Guerra stated, “ Appropriate disciplinary actions have been taken per school policy and the law. This serves as a reminder of the importance of discussing the dangers of drugs with our children and encouraging them to report any concerning situations to an adult.”

Details on how the child obtained the drugs remain part of an ongoing investigation. It is, however, expected that Child Protective Services will, or has already been notified.

had a school-wide prayer service around the flagpole. Today, Thursday, students will be making no-sew blankets for the homeless. They’ll also be writing letters to seminarians and will be knocking down donated cereal boxes like dominoes. All boxes will later be donated to local food pantries. On Friday, students will wrap up the week by making cards for local nursing homes and hosting a Grandparent’s Day reception after Mass.

they see whole week off, that’s another whole week off they are going to have to take off from work or find childcare or pay for childcare for their children and you know there are people in the community who cannot afford to do any of those things. So, I just don’t think it was the best calendar for the community,” said Bright.

Although there was no clear reasoning on the night of the meeting, district officials later did state that the decision was based on “staff feedback, as well as the

to provide the much-needed food assistance to all families in the area.

“The food distribution started back really when COVID hit the community. We really started seeing the need for Guadalupe County to start getting some extra food and then retired Commissioner (Greg) Seidenberger pushed for food distributions to come to the community and we began having these. We have had several food distributions over the last several years. We just did one last month in Seguin. It just brings a sense to people of hope, and it allows them to know if they need some food and if they need to feed their families, that they can show up to these distributions,” said Pinder. “It’s just a great effort by the commissioners court here in Guadalupe County, the food bank and all of the school districts that we partner with to make it happen.”

To ensure that enough food is available, Pinder encourages families to register in advance today (Thursday, Jan. 30)  by 1 p.m. at https://freshtrak.com/ register/event/316548 . But no matter what, Pinder says families who need food are still invited to show up.

“If they go to register for food and the link is not working, we encourage them to show up to the school on Saturday and get in line and we will get them registered on site,” said Pinder.

Pinder says volunteers are also needed to help distribute food. He says everyone in the community is encouraged to lend a hand.

“Without volunteers, these can’t happen. My staff is very limited. My staff actually shows up on these distributions. I don’t make them show up to these distributions. The last few distributions that we have had, we had a lot of volunteers. We had almost 100 volunteers at the Clemens one. We had about 70 at the Seguin location this last time and looking at rough numbers, we’ve got about 50 signed-up for Navarro but that does not mean that we still don’t need people,” said Pinder.

Volunteers will be needed from 7:30 a.m. to noon. To volunteer signup at  https://docs.google. com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdtS_UBPm9z1SYzauSzKp_VPdBv9IoxZHIdvVFFbhqoXkdIw/ viewform?usp=pp_url

Guadalupe County Fair, in which Seguin ISD students and staff are involved.”

The adopted calendar was one of two drafts created in conjunction with the District Education Improvement Committee (DEIC). Both drafts were then voted on by the community from Dec. 18-Jan. 11. District officials say of the 1,121 survey respondents, 64 percent were in favor of the calendar that was approved by the board on Thursday.

The calendar, for the most part, maintains all the other traditional days off. Other important dates include the first day of school, Tuesday, Aug. 12; the last day of school, Friday, May 22, 2026, and Spring Break March 9-13, 2026.

That means use or exposure to the product could cause temporary negative health effects.

The Department of Health says the risk of bird flu affecting the general public is low.
