Mapping out new school boundary lines
Contract approved for Seguin ISD Superintendent in Madison By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The Madison Metropolitan School District has officially approved the contract for Dr. Matthew Gutiérrez as its next superintendent of schools. The contract was approved Monday night. The two-year contract for Gutiérrez begins June 1, 2020 and runs through May 31, 2022. According to reports, Gutiérrez will be paid $250,000 in the first year. In his second year, the contract states Gutierrez shall receive at least a two-percent annual salary increase over the prior year's total annual salary.
Bill Lewis, chief operating officer and associate superintendent for the Seguin ISD, goes over some of the most recent changes drawn up by the district's rezoning committee. The committee continues to meet and is expected to soon propose what it thinks is the best option in new school boundary lines for the district. See story on page 3.
The decision was made the same night that his contract was also up for discussion in the Seguin ISD. Although no action was taken following the closed session, School Board President Cinde Thomas-Jimenez says
trustees were unable to comment on what was discussed. She did, however, confirm that the discussion was part of the overall superintendent contract process. Questions about the contract had been raised by members of the public following Dr. Gutierrez's decision to accept the job in Madison, Wisconsin. Some wondered why the process was even still necessary here locally as Dr. Gutierrez is set to leave the district at the end of the school year. News that Dr. Gutierrez could potentially be leaving was announced in December when he became one of the three finalists for the job. The Seguin ISD, just last week, approved a superintendent search firm and will meet with that firm this Thursday to nail down a schedule for the search and replacement of Dr. Gutierrez.

Tickets now on sale for romantic comedy dinner theater The owner is changing the name over to Joe's Jackalope Club because he wants to be like Hue Hueffner who had the bunnies but he can't have bunnies so he has jackalopes. All of it is going to be so cute," said Atchley. And as in any great story, Atchley says love, of course, conquers all.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Forget the flowers and candy. How about treating your sweetheart to a romantic dinner theater on Valentine's Day weekend? The romantic comedy being hosted by Playland Events and Productions is an original play written and co directed by locals Brandi Atchley, Amy Hanson and William Florie. The three performances will begin on Valentine's Day, Friday, Feb. 14 and will run through Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Aumont Rose Ballroom. The proceeds from the production will go to support the local Special Kids with Special Needs Austim group. Atchley says the original production which will debut as "a musical in the Rat Pack Style" is a story that follows the ups and downs of love. "Love at The Parthenon Lounge is set in 1961. It's a modern day story of Cupid

and his Psyche who was once a mortal and she is very upset with Cupid because the meddling mother-in-law, his mother Aphrodites is very jealous of her beauty so she decides to leave Mount Olympus and go back to Earth and become a mortal again which when she did that, she lost a lot of her memory and time is not the same amount as it is on Earth so she's in 1961 and she gets a job at The Parthenon Club as a cocktail waitress. Well the cocktail lounge is going through a lot of changes.
"What Cupid discovers is that everybody in the place is having relationship problems because he's having relationship problems because he is the God of Love and if his relationship isn't working, nobody's relationship is working so Psyche gets her memory back and when her memory starts to come back, she remembers and is still angry and she says 'oh, you still just want to be the God of love. You don't really love me. So, what he decides to do is help everybody in the place and because of the selflessness, she sees that and falls back in love with him and love is saved," said Atchley.
Atchley says the theater production comes complete with musical guests Big Daddy Dean and Chip Skaggs along with a fully catered Mediterranean dinner prepared by Chef Mike Shillinger. That menu will include grilled chicken picata with pasta and Greek vegetables along with lamb and beef plus a small Greek salad and dessert. A vegetarian option will also be available for guests. Tickets are $60 each and must be purchased at least two days in advance of each scheduled show. Show times on Friday and Saturday Feb. 14 and 15 are at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Sunday, February 16 matinee at 2 p.m. The Aumont is located at 301 N. Austin St. Tickets can be purchased at playlandevents.com or at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce office.

Rezoning efforts underway in the Seguin ISD Rezoning committee developing maps, redrawing school boundary lines
took some yarn and just started looking at sizes and counting kids and neighborhoods and then started trying to draw out some options for future boundaries," said Lewis. Lewis said the committee is closer to drawing what it thinks will be the best zoning map for the district.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Reworking those school boundary lines or school zones continues in the Seguin ISD. The process to begin the work was approved earlier in the school year. That's according to Bill Lewis, chief operating officer and associate superintendent for the Seguin ISD. "We have representatives from every campus that are parents and then we have a teacher for every
campus represented and a few principals. All the parents, all the teachers are Seguin ISD residents and they took our original zones. We came up with some guidelines that we want to kind of balance our enrollment. We want to make sure that we are utilizing our buildings. Somewhat equally, we want to make sure that we try to stay as true as we can to the neighborhood schools like we've always have the best that we can. So, they have taken these boundaries, looked at
our current enrollment and then we've projected out enrollment for the future based on the number of rooftops that are being built and lots and things. We have our demographer, Mr. Alexander, who has worked with the district for the last 10 years on doing our our projections and he's presented those several times. We've got our demographic update from Mr. Alexander - the committee did -- and then, we took maps of our current boundaries and then they started. They
"We came up with three maps with the groups and we eliminated one map a couple of meetings ago and now, we are down to two and we are still tweaking these. So through five meetings, we've gotten down to two maps. We did some more tweaks tonight in our fifth meeting. Our next step will more than likely be some sort of public input to come look at the maps and then once we kind of have some more information, we can have a night or two for the public to come in and look at them and make some comments and meet with committee members and staff and just give their input and then either select one of the maps or maybe even come up with a comprised map when we get the good and the bad of both maps of what the public thinks," said Lewis. Lewis' comments were shared following Monday night's rezoning committee meeting. Again, district officials remind the community that public input will be encouraged as soon as a proposed map is developed.

TLU Softball opens national title defense with doubleheader sweep, picked to win 7th straight SCAC championship (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran Softball started defense of its 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship with a doubleheader sweep Monday afternoon of HustonTillotson University, taking the first game 40 and the second game 7-1 at Ed Kruse Stadium (Morck Softball Field). Senior right-hander Kayla Oliveira and freshman right-hander Sydney Ouellette combined on a two-hit shutout in Game 1. Oliveira tossed five shutout innings. She allowed just one hit, and she struck out four with only one walk. Ouellette, younger sister of starting rightfielder Skylar Ouellette, notched her first collegiate save with two innings of one-hit relief. Ouellette posted her second career save in the late game. She entered the circle in the top of the fifth with two outs, the base loaded, and TLU clinging to a one-run lead, at 2-1. Ouellette coaxed a ground ball right back to her and calmly made the underhand toss to first base for the final out of the inning. She finished out the game with two more scoreless innings.
Hailey Padilla sparked TLU's season opening sweep of Huston-Tillotson with an RBI double in the first game and a two-run home run in the finale.
First-year right-hander Ashlyn Strother picked up her first collegiate win with 4-2/3 innings of work in the second game. She allowed just one earned run, and she struck out six. See TLU, page 5
