Food, girl time plus piano bar atmosphere among events at this year’s Galentines Cocktail Social scheduled for this Friday night in downtown Seguin

(Seguin) – Women are encouraged to put themselves first for an evening of networking, friendship, and fun during this Friday’s second annual Galentines Cocktail Social. After a successful event last year, local businesswoman Denise Leos has organized yet another gathering at the Soel Venue located in downtown Seguin.

Leos says for years, she always met with her own girlfriends for their own Galentines get together. Then after her and husband, Freddy, began embarking in new businesses in Seguin, Leos says she wanted to learn even more about Seguin and get to know the women in this community. That’s when she said the vision for the Galentine’s Cocktail Social was spirited.

In launching the event, Leos says she wanted

something to applaud, inspire and encourage women.

“Nobody knows each story behind anybody else, so I felt that it was good to get people together to know ‘hey, I’m not alone. Wow, she’s been through it too’ because sometimes you know, we are our worst critic

and we hurt our own selves just thinking things that people may be thinking about us but in reality, they are not so I just felt that it was great to get a bunch of women together and you know just uplift one another and push each other to take that new step that they...Galentines, pg. 3

The “Lubbock Avalanche-Journal” reports that Hollis “Reid” Daniels entered a guilty plea on Monday as his trial was set to begin in a Lubbock courtroom. The plea immediately pushed the trial into the sentencing phase, with testimony starting on Tuesday.

Daniels, who’s now 24-years old, has admitted that he shot and killed a campus police officer in the briefing room at the Texas Tech Police Department. Officer Floyd East was killed in October of 2017. East had earlier arrested Daniels on a drug charge.

Daniels now faces either the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Tonight’s Seguin Showcase destined to be out of this world

(Seguin) – You’re invited to come out tonight and see all that Seguin businesses have to offer. Today marks the annual Showcase Seguin event at the Seguin Coliseum. The free but ticket required event is being hosted by the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber President Chester Jenke says the theme for this year’s 2023 trade show is A Space Odyssey. He says folks will get to enjoy all the great decorations and costumes plus meet up with the dozens and dozens of businesses showing off their products and services.

He says there will be plenty of food, drink, music and other fun ways to take home a prize.

This is the first time that the chamber will be hosting the event for free. Jenke says tickets, however, are still required and should be reserved at the chamber office as soon as possible.

“There are no tickets that are available other than if you call the chamber office. We have a limited number of tickets that we have kind of held back for those last minute deciders but you can call the chamber office at 830-379-6382 and they will have a few of them that are available the day of the show but it will be a very very few. So again, I would encourage folks to call the chamber office and register for those tickets that we have that we held back for the last week,” said Jenke. Meanwhile, those with tickets but who now find themselves unable to make it are also being encouraged to pass along those free passes so that as many people as possible can attend tonight’s Showcase.

This year’s Showcase Seguin event will be held today from 5 to 8 p. m. at the Seguin Coliseum.

GRMC earns national recognition for Safety in Surgery

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) has earned yet another prestigious award. GRMC this week announced that it has earned the Go Clear Award™ for its achievement in eliminating hazardous smoke from its surgical procedures.

The Go Clear Award is presented by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) to recognize health care facilities that have committed to providing increased surgical patient and health care worker

safety by implementing practices that eliminate smoke caused by the use of lasers and electrosurgery devices during surgery.

GRMC earned its award by undergoing comprehensive surgical smoke education and testing and for providing the medical devices and resources necessary to evacuate surgical smoke during all smoke-generating procedures.

“The collaborative work of our team is extremely beneficial to the entire OR staff, as well as our surgeons,” says GRMC

Director of OR/SPD, Jody Elliot, MSN, RN. Being able to alleviate the effects of long-term exposure to surgical smoke is the right choice for our employees and physicians.”

Surgical smoke is the unwanted by-product of energy-generating devices that are used in 90 percent

Galentines, continued.

“...want to take or are afraid of taking or maybe, there is somebody who they are going to meet there that is on the path that they want to be on and they can get some answers from them,” said Leos.

Just as important of bringing women together, Leos says she wanted their gathering to have an impact in the community. Last year’s proceeds went to the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter. This year, proceeds will benefit Seguin’s food pantry, the Christian Cupboard.

Leos says she was inspired to name the Christian Cupboard as the beneficiary after volunteering her own time at the New Braunfels Food Bank. As she and her husband continue to operate businesses in Seguin like the Soel Venue and The Backyard, she believes it’s important to also seek out those worthy charities.

“Right now, the times (the way that they are), people are not working, or we go through these weather (freezes) and people can’t get to the things that they need and it’s simple stuff, cereal, canned items -- anything helps so we chose the Christian Cupboard and I’m super excited,” said Leos.

Leos says Friday night’s event will also feature a pair of guest speakers. They include Regina Lee,

of all surgeries. Its contents include toxic chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide, viruses, bacteria, blood and cancer cells. Inhalation and absorption of surgical smoke pose serious health risks to patients and surgical staff. Studies compare the inhalation of smoke from vaporized human tissue to the smoke created by cigarettes; the average daily impact of surgical smoke to the surgical team is equivalent to inhaling 27-30 unfiltered cigarettes.

“Total evacuation needs to become the standard for all procedures that generate surgical smoke,” said Linda Groah, MSN, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, FAAN, CEO/Executive Director of AORN. “With this award, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is demonstrating its deep commitment to the health and safety of its staff and community.”

Today, it is estimated only 50 percent of health care workers across the U.S. understand the hazards of smoke exposure.

of the Christian Cupboard as well as Leos’ special friend Selina Medina who she credits for her volunteerism at the food bank. Plus, she says Medina is an advocate of women supporting women.

Leos says the fun will continue following the presentations with some great food and dueling piano entertainment being provided by The Flying Ivories.

“Tickets are $30. With that ticket – actually Court Street Coffee is back again with their ‘amazingness’ that they do. They are going to be doing a Charcuterie spread like they did last year. It was a huge hit and I’m just ecstatic that they offered to come back and do it again this year. The Sweet Stop has donated some sweets for us. Yoli’s (Mexican Restaurant) donated a salsa bar and I’m bringing back the sushi. The sushi was a great

hit last year so I’m definitely bringing that back and that’s from A Tan. We will have soft drinks that are nonalcohol so we will have tea and water and we will have the bar open and we will be selling cocktails if people want to purchase that on their own,” said Leos.

Leos says tickets to the event are available online and can be purchased up until the event. A link for those tickets can be found on the Soel Venue Facebook page.

VIP tables for eight which includes two champagne bottles are also available for $500. Helping Leos coordinate this year’s efforts are Molly Rojas; Raven Garza, Selina Medina and Kim Rodriguez.

The Galentines Cocktail Social begins at 7:10 p.m. Friday at Soel Venue. Soel Venue is located at 112 W. Donegan St.

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran softball team is No. 4 in the 2023 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll announced Tuesday. The Bulldogs No. 4 ranking in the NFCA D-III Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll marks the fourth consecutive season that Texas Lutheran has been selected in the preseason top five and the sixth time the Bulldogs have landed in the top 10 of the NFCA preseason poll since the organization began announcing the preseason poll in 1997.

Christopher Newport, the defending national champions, was chosen as the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation garnering all 10 first place votes. TLU was joined by Trine, Salisbury, and Berry in the top five. Texas Lutheran will face three teams ranked in the preseason top 25 this year - Babson (Feb. 25th), Piedmont (Mar. 8), and Mary HardinBaylor (Mar. 21) - all at Ed Kruse Stadium.

The 2023 NFCA Division-III Top 25 Coaches Poll is voted on by 10 NCAA Division-

III head coaches with one representing each of the NCAA’s D3 Regions.

The full NFCA poll can be viewed here.

The 2023 preseason rankings are further validation of how the Bulldog have earned a spot amongst the sport’s elite in recent years.

Texas Lutheran has been ranked in the Top 25 of the NFCA poll in each of its last 146 games played.

The Bulldogs were recently selected as the SCAC preseason favorite, marking the ninth straight year that TLU has topped the conference’s preseason poll.

The Bulldogs have advanced to each of the last three Division-III Women’s College World Series, the only D-III team with that claim, and return six starters - including All-American Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls), AllRegion pitcher Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/ Gregory Portland), and All-SCAC First Team first baseman Laura Hernandez (Missouri City/Ridge Point) - from last year’s team that advanced to

Salem and finished the 2022 season ranked third in the nation. The 2022 campaign saw the team win a program record 45 games, finishing 45-6, and claiming their eighth straight SCAC regular season and tournament championships.

TLU opens the 2023 season Feb. 15 in San Antonio, Texas, as they take on Division-II St. Mary’s, a 2022 NCAA Division-II Softball Tournament Qualifier before facing NAIA’s Huston-Tillotson on on Sat, Feb. 18 for the home opener to conclude 2023’s Opening Week. Westchester Announces $1 Million Program For Black Maternal Health

(White Plains, NY) -- Westchester County is announcing a nearly one-million-dollar initiative to improve Black maternal and child health. The money will fund a joint initiative between advocates and providers, including the county’s health department and Saint John’s Riverside Hospital. The CDC reports Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Sister to Sister Founder Cheryl Brannan says the money will help create new roles, fund training, and expand services.

WHO Warns Of Long-Term Healthcare Impacts After Earthquake In Turkey, Syria

(Switzerland) -- The World Health Organization is warning of a “long-term” impact on health after a major earthquake in Turkey and Syria. A WHO Spokesperson told Sky News it’s bringing resources to the area for healthcare after thousands died. Biden Vows To Bring Down Healthcare Costs

(Washington, DC) -- President Biden is vowing to bring down health care costs. In his State of the Union speech, the President said his Inflation Reduction Act caps the cost of insulin at 35-dollars a month for seniors on Medicare. He also said there are lawmakers who are trying to repeal the law and he promised to veto any bill that raises the cost of prescription drugs. The President also noted that more Americans have health insurance now than ever as a record 16 million people are enrolled under the Affordable Care Act. That law is more commonly known as Obamacare.

Study Finds Most Former NFL Players Had CTE

(Boston, MA) -- Researchers say over 90 percent of the former NFL players they studied had CTE. The Boston University CTE Center studied the brains of over 370 deceased NFL players and found 345 had the progressive brain disease. CTE can cause memory loss, depression and the loss of motor skills. The results were an update of a study the university conducted in 2017, which found CTE in 87 percent of over 200 football players. The director of the CTE Center said they released the update ahead of the Super Bowl this week because “the NFL hasn’t done anything substantial to prevent CTE” and the risk is still high.
