Seguin Police Officer relies on training to help save a life Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The life saving efforts put into action last month by a Seguin Police Officer is not going unnoticed. Last month on Jan. 18, Officer Brian Lopez and other officers responded to a shooting in the 600 block of Melrose Street. Officer Lopez was second on scene and located a male victim in the roadway suffering from a gunshot wound in the middle of his chest. Officer Lopez immediately and calmly requested another officer to grab a department issued IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) kit from the vehicle while he held his gloved hand over the open chest wound. Officer Lopez placed a chest seal over the wound, rolled the victim into the recovery position, and began quickly sweeping for additional injuries. Fire/EMS arrived shortly and took over care of the victim. The victim was transported to a trauma hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

has tenants to it. One, they want officers to slow down and not drive too fast, want to make sure they wear their body armor, want to make sure they stay fit, they wear their seatbelts and that they have the tactical competencies that we need as a police officer -- that they are doing the right things tactically, safe. They developed this award program in conjunction with the Texas Municipal League which is the city's insurance carrier because it is in their best interest that if we do things right, that insurance claims will go down as well so they bought these first aid kits to award officers that are nominated for doing great things and Officer Lopez was nominated and they all agreed -- the committee that looked at this -- agreed to his actions in January absolutely merited the award," said Nichols. Nichols says as part of that recognition, Officer Lopez on Thursday was awarded his own personal IFAK kit, a VINCIBLE patch and VINCIBLE challenge coin from the TPCA.

"Officer Lopez is very well trained and he was very calm under pressure on this particular incident. He knew exactly what to do and that just shows the training. Not only did he do the training but he retained the "They have a program called VINCI- training and this is what we expect of BLE. Applications now being accepted for Seguin ISD Superintendent Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is 10 plus meetings away from naming the school district's next superintendent. Trustees Thursday night agreed to a superintendent search timeline -a timeline that began yesterday and will run over the next several months. If the calendar runs as scheduled, then the Seguin ISD could potentially have its next leader named on Wednesday, May 6.

than usual this time of the year. There are openings that are coming up daily almost but nothing that is out of the ordinary for us," said Felkner. Felkner says behind any successful search process is community input. He says the proposed timeline for the Seguin ISD ensures that there is opportunity for folks to share what they would

Helping the trustees develop the timeline is Butch Felkner of Executive Search Services. The superintendent search firm which operates under the umbrella of TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) is the same firm that was utilized in the hiring of Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez who will resign at the end of the school year. Felkner says he is excited to again work with the Seguin ISD. He says he doesn't believe the district will have trouble finding a replacement. "I think that there is not going to be an issue with that. The district I think is in far better shape right now and so I think that it's going to be attractive to a lot of candidates that are out there and it is our job and the board's job to make sure that we work to find the best candidate for the district," said Felkner. Felkner says he believes the timing is right for the district to launch a search.

like to see in the next superintendent.

"I think the main thing is once the online survey is up and the community has input and should go online to this district's website and give their input on what they are looking for in a superintendent. If they can't do that online, then we are going to be here as we said on March 5 and would like anybody "There are vacancies no more who can't go online to certainly

come up and be a part of those evening meetings that we will have," said Felkner. Felkner says it's been three years since his firm has helped the Seguin ISD with a search. He says since that time, much has changed for the district making it an even more attractive place for a candidate. "I think the district has grown and changed

sincerely believe that we are going to get a really great pool of applicants because Seguin is in a much better place than we were the last time. We've got a lot of innovative things, lots of wonderful things happening with fine arts and athletics. I think we are really going to attract some great people. We will be spending a lot of time, taking our time, reviewing each and every one of those candidates and coming up with six that we want to interview and our ideal date to have somebody picked and maybe hired is right at the end of the school year basically so that starting during the summer months, the new superintendent will be able to ease his way in and work with staff and just hit the next school year with the fresh ideas," said Jimenez.

Jimenez, last night, also shared a message to those candidates who have already begun doing their own homework on Seguin. "I want them to know that we are in a big period of transition and we are definitely headed in a good direction. It's a very positive momentum that we have and if they would like to be a part of something positive, this is the place to be," said over the course of the three years. Jimenez. The Panthers (14-15) are 5-5 in district play with games left against Poteet and Pleasanton. Cuero is 4-5 in district with contests remaining against Poteet, Pleasanton, and San Antonio-Brooks. Navarro and Cuero split their head-to-head

Grant Chase collected a team-high seven rebounds. Cooper Guetzke finished with seven points, and Preston Grobe added six. Navarro returns to the court Friday with a 7 p.m. road game in Poteet.

More Die From Coronavirus

(Beijing) -- The death toll from the coronavirus in China is passing 600. Health officials in China say over 630 people have died in the country, while another 31-thousand have been infected. Most of the infections are centralized in the Hubei area. In the U.S., only a dozen people have been infected with the disease. Americans continue to evacuate China in hopes of steering clear of the illness.

China Hospital Confirms Whistleblowing Coronavirus Doctor's Death

(Wuhan, China) -- A hospital in China is confirming that a doctor who first sounded the alarm over the coronavirus has died from the disease. There had been conflicting reports over the fate of Dr. Li Wenliang [[ lee wen-yang ]], with Chinese media initially countering reports that he died. Wuhan Central Hospital has now come out to say that Wenliang passed away, adding "we deeply regret and mourn this." Wenliang was an eye doctor who first publicized the emergence of the respiratory illness in China back in December. He faced retaliation for breaking the news. The coronavirus has killed hundreds of people, with thousands more infected.

11 Military Bases Chosen For Possible Quarantine Sites

(Washington, DC) -- More military bases are preparing to quarantine coronavirus evacuees from China if needed. The Defense Department chose 11 locations today to match the 11 airports already funneling flights because of the respiratory illness. That includes Honolulu, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, New York, Seattle, D.C., Newark and Detroit. Each base could provide possible housing for up to 20 travelers for the mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Coronavirus Name Might Change

(Wuhan, China) -- With 31-thousand people now sick from the Coronavirus, the name is well known. But that could change by next week. Scientists are meeting to decide what to call this quickly spreading disease. It's similar to SARS, which emerged in China in 2002 and killed 700 people. The coronavirus death toll is nearing that. So far, the committee seems to favor using SARS in the new name.

CDC Sends Out Coronavirus Testing Kits To Labs

(Washington, DC) -- Testing kits for the coronavirus are headed to 100 labs across the country and 100 more overseas. The CDC just sent them out. Each kit contains about 800 tests. Health officials call this a critical step forward in protecting the public. More than 800 CDC workers are focused on the outbreak, including 200 who've been moved to airports and bases housing quarantined passengers. So far, there are 12 confirmed patients in the U.S but the CDC is awaiting results on 76 possible cases. NYC Mayor Says City Is Closer To Doing Coronavirus Testing

(New York, NY) -- Mayor de Blasio says New York City is one step closer to being able to test coronavirus samples. Right now, all the testing is done by the CDC out of Atlanta. The Mayor says the CDC has agreed to give New York the tools to get it done but now it needs local labs to get the okay to proceed. So far, there've been no confirmed coronavirius cases in the city or elsewhere in the state but several people are hospitalized awaiting test results. Copyright © 2020 TTWN Media Networks Inc.
