Local flower shops ensuring a Happy Valentine's Day Flower shops, other gift ideas still available in Seguin By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Cupids shouldn't worry too much if they find themselves empty handed this hour. At least that's according to a local flower shop who believes in staying one step ahead in making sure that everyone gets those flowers and special gifts on Valentine's Day.
A sea of love
far, we've had 350 deliveries in one day so we keep a lot of drivers. We have a lot of volunteers. We are so thankful for them to come out and be able to be our happiness ambassadors and send those smiles all over town," said Lum. Flower shops are not the only ones who will be busy today. Local retailers have also been feeling the added pressure to stock those special gifts. Stores such as The Shop, Gift and Gourmet, Southern Good and St. Anthony Jewelry are among the many businesses who have equipped themselves with fun, yummy and romantic gift ideas.
Jamie Lum, of Dietz Flower Shop, says there really isn't anything to worry about. "Come on in. We can definitely get your sweetheart taken care of with the perfect gift whether it be roses or a mixed flower arrangement all the way down to chocolates and plush and just kind of a wide variety of items that they can choose from. So, they can give us a call or even come in," said Lum.
Although these and other stores will remain open just a bit longer today, they won't be able to guarantee that all items will be in stock so customers are asked to stop by a flower shop or store and secure their gifts as soon as possible.
Lum says today is indeed one of the busiest days of the year for the floral industry. She says making sure you are covered takes months of planning. "Behind the scenes, it is a lot. It's getting all the vases ready and having all the supplies and kind of getting an idea of how many roses and flower stems you are going to be needing to fulfill all the orders and taking that wild guess as to what is going to be coming. It's one of our most popular times of the year for flowers. Everyone Florists such as those at Dietz Flower Shop are working around the clock to help loves getting roses so we are constantly getting orders. We started fill today's Valentine's Day orders. Local flowers shops say there is still plenty of back in November getting ready time to ensure that special gift. for this holiday season so we've been busy and the girls have done excellent getting everything Lum says when it comes to sur- flowers. Seguin celebrates local centenarian
Mayor recognizes the life of a local man with special 100th birthday proclamation By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
Ayers.
(Seguin) -- Happy birthday to the Captain! On Tuesday, Seguin Mayor Don Keil presented a special proclamation to longtime Seguin resident and centenarian, Captain William Ayers, in honor and recognition of his 100th birthday.
After his career, Ayers in 1960, established the Ayers Steamship Co. Inc., in New Orleans, and retired as Captain of the Port of New Orleans before he, his wife Billie, and their children returned to Seguin -- here, they moved into the historic Blumberg home and have been there ever since.
"Whereas, William was born Feb. 11, 1920 to Ed and Bertha Blumberg Ayers, grew up in Seguin and graduated as a member of the Seguin High School Class of 1937," said Keil.
When asked about turning 100, Ayers says he's been blessed to have experienced so much and is proud to have returned home to a city that continues to make him proud.
Following graduation, Ayers entered the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII, during which he survived a torpedo attack on his ship.
"Well, Seguin is improving all the time. It's a modern city and I'm proud to be a citizen here. That's why I moved back to New Orleans from Seguin," said Ayers.
While visiting Seguin City Hall, Ayers also got the chance to ring a brass bell and visit the builder's plank that he acquired for the city from the S.S. Juan Seguin, a cargo ship that saw action during WWII.
Mayor Keil says he was proud to honor Ayers with the proclamation and says "This is a momentous occasion and the City of Seguin wishes Captain Ayers all the best on his special day."
"I got the bell from the United States Marines Commission. I made a request and then they gave it to me and I brought it here and we had a big ceremony right in front. We asked to be named Juan N. Seguin, the founder of Seguin," said

Candidates Corner 2020 The Seguin Daily News today will begin featuring the candidates appearing on the March 3, 2020 Republican March Primary Election. Each candidate was asked to respond to the following three questions. Early voting begins Tuesday, Feb. 18 and runs through Friday, Feb. 28, 2020. Today’s featured contest is the race for the Republican nomination for the position of Guadalupe County Sheriff. There are no Democratic candidates running for the position of sheriff.
Candidate Name: Arnold Zwicke Guadalupe County Sheriff (Incumbent)
CandidateName: Jimmy Harless Guadalupe County Sheriff
Tell us why you're running? “I am seeking re-election because I enjoy being your Full-time Sheriff. I want to continue our good working relationships with all local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and continue to partner with our school districts and churches to ensure everyone’s safety. I want to stay involved with the many organizations I partner with to continue to make Guadalupe County a better place to live. I want to continue with the many programs we have already established to include Animal Control, Mental Health, RadKids, taking drugs off the streets, patrolling the lakes, combating the large truck problems on the highways, continued training for officers, maintaining a State Certified Jail, and the Santa Sheriff Program just to mention a few.”
Tell us why you're running? “I am running for the Republican nomination for Guadalupe County Sheriff. The voters of this county have not had a choice for Sheriff since 2004 and I want to give them that choice. We must not dwell on the past but look toward the future. This county has changed drastically over the years and technology in the law enforcement field changes yearly. The Sheriff must have a vision toward the future and be able to see the big picture. Working with Commissioner’s Court and other County Officials is tantamount to the spending of tax payer money. A three and five year plan will provide attainable goals so that millions of dollars is not asked for during each budget cycle. The Sheriff must protect our residents and visitors, enforce the laws of the State of Texas, be tough on crime yet listen to the concerns of the people and have an open mind. I intend to listen, be a team player and do the job that the people of Guadalupe County expect.”
What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges? “Protecting and serving the citizens of Guadalupe County with fair and effective law enforcement is very important. It is imperative to maintain good working relationships with the citizens and Commissioner’s Court to operate and maintain an effective, efficient, and conservative Sheriff’s Office. The Office of Sheriff is responsible for budgets in excess of $24,000,000 of taxpayers money. I want to continue to improve and build on all aspects of the Sheriff’s Office with emphases on training personnel, establishing more outreach programs for the citizens as well as continuing the diligent acquisition of an adequate radio/communication system. Public safety as well as officer safety is vital to a successful Sheriff’s Office. I want to enhance on the programs already established by empowering our children as well as our senior citizens with officer interactions and educational programs. “ SEE ZWICKE, page 9
What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges? “There are many challenges that come with a change of an elected official. Employee retention and the relaying to them that I will have their back and support them to my fullest ability is very important to me. It’s not about the elected official but about the men and women that do the job. Placing people in the right positions and giving them the support and proper equipment is a priority. Protecting our children in our schools and upgrading security in our Justice Center is a concern. Providing deputies with the proper equipment and keeping them out in the neighborhoods is another attainable goal that will take time but can be done. Communication with all agencies including the Constable Offices, the volunteer fire departments and the police departments will be dealt with almost immediately. Our citizens should demand that. Those men and women risk their lives on a daily basis and should be part of the team. Also, we must listen to the concerns of the animal adoption groups. They are tremendously passionate and have a big heart. SEE HARLESS, page 9 I make no promises but I will listen and learn.”

CDC Prepping For Possible U.S. Coronavirus Outbreak
United Extends Suspension of China, Hong Kong Flights
(Atlanta, GA) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says its preparing for the coronavirus to take a foothold in the U.S. Nancy Messonnier [[ MESS-ehn-yay ]], head of the agency's center for respiratory diseases, said Wednesday that the U.S. or another country will likely see the spread of the virus, which has killed more than a thousand and sickened tens of thousands more. So far, there are 14 confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S. Messonnier said the CDC is working to make sure face masks and gloves will be available in case of an outbreak. The CDC is also monitoring more than 30-thousand people who have come to the U.S. from China since mid-January.
(Chicago, IL) -- United Airlines is putting flights to mainland China and Hong Kong on hold a little longer. The Chicago-based company announced it was extending its suspension until April 24th because of the coronavrius. The original suspension was only supposed to last until February 20th. The announcement comes as confirmed cases of the illness continue to skyrocket. More than 13-hundred people have died from coronavirus while more than 60-thousand are infected around the world.
Coronavirus Deaths Surges (Beijing) -- The coronavirus death toll in China is over 13-hundred. Health officials in the area where the outbreak is centered reported nearly 250 more deaths Wednesday. They also confirmed nearly 15-thousand new cases of the disease, though that number is very high because of new diagnosing guidelines meant to streamline treatment. There are now more than 60-thousand cases of the respiratory illness around the world.
Major Technology Event Canceled Because Of Coronavirus (Barcelona) -- Health concerns are forcing the cancellation of a major technology event. Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has been scratched because of the coronavirus outbreak. “I am the only candidate for Sheriff that has 19+ years of on the job experience. I am the only Full-time candidate for Sheriff. For the last 19+ years I have kept my promise to continue to move the Sheriff ’s Office in the right direction to expand and meet the needs for the citizens of a fast growing county. A lot has been accomplished since I took over the Office of Sheriff in 2001 but I couldn’t have done it without the hard work and dedication of the employees at the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office. I am extremely proud of the FBI Uniform Crime Report that shows major crime decreasing while the population of Guadalupe County continues to grow. I ask for your Vote to allow me to continue to serve as your Sheriff. I encourage you to come visit the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office and see what we’re really all about.”
“I am a Seguin boy and have a wide range of experience. Law Enforcement has been my calling since I was twenty years old but I believe that it’s not about wearing a badge. It’s about helping people. This county is the 28th most populated county in the State of Texas and a leader must see the total picture. I grew up on the Guadalupe River so I know what can happen. I currently hold a national certification in Floodplain Management, have many years of experience in the platting of subdivisions on the county level, have years of Emergency Management experience, was the Asst.
