States To Cut Food Stamp Benefits In March

(Undated) -- Food stamp cuts are less than three weeks away for more than 30-million Americans. Thirty-two states are set to cut benefits on March 1st. The cuts in SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, are due to the end of so-called emergency allotments which bumped up benefits at the start of the pandemic. Eighteen states have already ended their emergency allotments, some citing the strengthening economy as the reason.

NY Democrats Push To Ban Youth Tackle Football

(Albany, NY) -- There’s a push by New York Democrats to ban youth tackle football in the state. Assemblyman Michael Benedetto of the Bronx is reintroducing a bill that bans tackle football for children 12 and under because of the risk of head injuries. Benedetto has been wanting to do this for years but now he has a sponsor for his bill in the senate, Democrat Luis Sepulveda. The Pop Warner football organization says there is no conclusive proof that youth football can lead to CTE, which is a brain condition linked to repeated head injuries.

According to recent data, students in the U.S. fell further behind than those in other countries. Research published in the journal Nature Human Behavior showed students in 15 countries fell behind only about a third of a year on average. Fifty-nine-percent of U.S. public school principals surveyed said their schools are using some form of so-called “tailored accelerated instruction” to help kids catch up, particularly in reading and math.
