The growth in our precinct has been tremendous, but that prosperity has also brought an increase in crime. Seguin's Flores to play softball at Coastal Bend College
(Seguin) - Seguin High School senior Ashlyn Flores signed a letter of intent Friday to play softball at Coastal Bend College, a two-year school in Beeville that competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Flores was the top reliever on the Matadors' pitching staff as a sophomore two years ago, but sat out her junior season in 2019 to give birth to her baby daughter. She is back to full strength, and with the full support of Seguin head coach John Garcia, his staff, and the rest of the team.
"That is tough, when you sit out a year like that and come back the way she has," Garcia said. "She looks amazing, she's doing great things on the field for us. It's tough being a mom, a student, and an athlete at the same time, and she's been 100 per-

Coastal Bend College emerged as Flores' school choice after weighing multiple options. "I had very many choices, but what made Coastal Bend feel like it was perfect for me, was when I went to tour the campus, it felt like home automatically" Flores said. "That's something I really was looking for when I was going to college. I wanted to feel comfortable and not worry, and that's what I felt when I saw Coastal Bend. The coaches there are very friendly, and all the teammates, the girls, they took me in like I was already a part of the team."

(Kerrville) - Seguin dropped out of contention for a berth in the UIL boys basketball playoffs Friday night with a 50-41 road loss to Kerrville-Tivy.
The Matadors (17-15) are 8-7 in District 26-5A, two games back of the fourth and final playoff spot with only one contest remaining on the schedule. Tivy, who avenged a 52-47 loss to Seguin from January 14, is tied with Boerne-Champion for third place with a 10-5 mark in district play. Wagner (14-1) has clinched the district championship, and Harlandale (114) is in second place. Seguin trailed 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, 23-18 at halftime, and didn't hit a single three-pointer in the first half. The Antlers won the third quarter 13-8 to build a 36-26 lead and kept the Mats at arm's length in the fourth period. Cold shooting negated a strong Seguin defensive effort. The Matadors only connected twice
from three-point range and went 9-19 at the free throw line
"Great job defensively, holding them to what we needed to," head coach Dwayne Gerlich said. "I know they got up to 50 points, but really they scored in the 40s because they hit some free throws at the end when we had to foul. But a great, great effort overall. Just a lid on the basket. Wish I could change it for them. I feel bad for the kids, but they did a lot of good things during the game to give themselves a chance to win."
25 record to a 2020 season that is guaranteed to finish above .500. Gerlich complimented his players for making that leap and passed along praise from Tivy head coach Brian Young as well.
Christopher James led Seguin offensively with 16 points, 14 in the second half. Gerrit Twitero also reached double figures with 10. Joseph Vela added five, R.J. Acuna four, Jhalen Mickles, Matthew Doege, and Kaleb McCann two apiece.
"This group right here probably had some of the highest character and work ethic that we've had in awhile," Gerlich said. "This is a great group of kids, and man, I'm feeling bad that they didn't have a chance to taste the playoffs. I just spoke with Coach Young just a second ago, and he doesn't talk to many people after a game. He talked to me for 10 minutes. He gave the greatest compliment to our kids, of how far they have come in a short period of time."
Seniors James, Twitero, Acuna, Vela, and Doege make up the starting five that has led the turnaround from last year's 8-

Coronavirus Death Toll Rises To Nearly 15-hundred
CDC Says Some Coronavirus Test Kits Are Flawed
(Beijing) -- Health officials in China say nearly 15-hundred people have died from the coronavirus. In the area where the outbreak is centralized, over a hundred more people died Thursday. Only three people have died outside of mainland China. The total number of people infected with the respiratory illness is over 65-thousand.
(Atlanta, GA) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Convention says some of its coronavirus test kits aren't working properly. Some of the kits, which were also sent to at least 30 countries, have produced "inconclusive" results. The CDC blames flawed components and says it's shipping replacement parts. Several states discovered the problem during routine quality control checks.
CDC Confirms 15th Coronavirus Case In United States (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is confirming a 15th case of coronavirus in the United States. The patients is among hundreds under mandatory quarantine at Lackland Air Force base in Texas. The 14th case involves a second person evacuated from China by the federal government and quarantined at a military base near San Diego. There are now eight confirmed COVID-19 cases in California, two in Illinois, and one each in Arizona, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Texas and Washington state but no deaths. The CDC says it's still monitoring more than 120 potential cases and has ruled out the virus in 114 other patients.

Weight Loss Drug Recalled For Cancer Risk (Woodcliff, NJ) -- A popular weight loss drug is being recalled. The FDA says Belviq could raise the risk of cancer. The maker disagrees, saying the benefits outweigh the risk. But the company is still taking action to voluntarily get the drug off the market. The FDA says pancreatic, colorectal and lung cancer are reported more often from using Belviq. Patients are told to stop taking the drug immediately and toss out any leftover pills. Doctors are also being told to stop prescribing it.

"EXPERIENCE - INTEGRITY - LEADERSHIP. I am the best candidate because I have the most experience, both in this office and in my prior 25 years experience as an attorney. A district court is a place where life changing decisions are made; a judge must have experience, wisdom and integrity in this office. Because I believe a judge should always be fair and impartial, I have refused to accept campaign contributions from attorneys who might practice before me. Further, I believe that a judge should follow the law, not make it, and will never legislate from the bench, and will uphold the values of the United States and Texas Constitutions. Finally, I have proven leadership. I am the local administrative judge in all four counties. I led the effort for Guadalupe County to get a new District Court, including drafting the legislation and working with the legislators and their staff for the passage of the bill creating the new court. Because I have proven experience, integrity and leadership, I am the only real choice for this position."
“I truly care about this community and the importance of the justice system. I have dedicated my career to public service and believe we are called to help those who find themselves in positions where they cannot help themselves. My background in criminal prosecution and law enforcement, along with civil experience both as a prosecutor and a private attorney, coupled with over twenty years of victim and child advocacy, gives me the ability to be kind and fair while also taking emotions out of difficult but firm decisions necessary to protect the public. Efficiency in docketing, court scheduling, and accurate decision making are imperative to administering justice. Through experience in constituencies of several million to small towns of several hundred, I have a strong business understanding of how taxpayer dollars are impacted and best spent through appropriate judicial leadership. I have been steadfast in my involvement in the Republican Party for over twenty years and truly believe that it is necessary for strong, informed, young conservatives to take the reins as role models to preserve the values of faith, family, and freedom that we hold so dear.”

"In my career, I have served in several capacities, including Detention Officer, Patrol Officer, Patrol Supervisor, K9 Officer, Warrant Officer, Narcotics Investigator, Drug Interdiction and Court House Security. I have drafted and executed countless Search Warrants. I have completed special assignments with the D.E.A. in San Antonio and Eagle Pass. I have completed more than 2,000 continued education hours including mental health training. I hold a Master Peace Officer Certification which is the highest level of certification for a Texas Peace Officer. I am an active member of the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, and have their support and endorsement. I also have the support of other Constables in the area. I am a proactive officer, and currently hold the record for the largest cocaine seizure in Guadalupe County history of over 500 pounds with a street value of $3.6 million dollars. I have an extensive working relationship with other agencies and have worked closely with Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies to include parole and probation officers."
