Folks to support farmers, ranchers with purchase of $1 burgers
Guadalupe County observes Texas Food Connection Day
(Seguin) -- Today is the day that you will be reminded of exactly where the food on your table comes from. Today is Texas Food Connection Day in which urban and rural neighbors are encouraged to come together and celebrate food and the work that goes into growing it.
Here in Guadalupe County, the Farm Bureau works to further ensure those conversations by treating the public to $1 hamburgers. Each year in February, the local farm bureau office grills the hamburgers in its parking lot.
Darin Klaehn, the president of the Guadalupe County Farm Bureau board of directors, says while $1 burgers might sound amazing, the dollar amount symbolizes much more than just a good deal.
“Normally, the dollar represents the amount of money that is shared
amongst the farmers and ranchers. It’s less than that but that’s kind of where the number the $1 comes from. That’s what our gross profit is that we have to share,” said Klaehn.
Klaehn says this longtime tradition has been critical in getting the community to thank a farmer or
rancher. He says there’s no better way than to observe this day than food.
“So, we cook 300 burgers. That’s the number we normally do. So, we have 300 hamburgers that we are going to cook. We start serving at 11 a.m. It is a first come first serve.
When we run out, unfortunately, it usually happens about the first hour and half that we run out and we will have burgers for $1 and we will have drinks and chips for $1,” said Klaehn.
Klaehn says the Texas Food Connection Day event remains the perfect way to feed growing appetites -- appetites for both food and knowledge.
“One of the big things that we want people to understand is where their food truly comes from. Who grows it? Who provides it? So instead of focusing that HEB provides it, it is the farmers and the ranchers of the community, of the state that are growing the food that everyone eats and then on top of that, it is the when you happen to see a tractor driving down the road, the safety on how wide our equipment is, how big our equipment... Investment to public education
Establishing a lifelong love for learning for our students
(Seguin) – You no longer have to imagine a trip to Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Las Vegas or even Tuscany. That’s because you can now make a realistic attempt at visiting one of these travel destinations and all while investing in public education.
Purchasing a Golden Ticket from the Seguin Education Foundation is the community’s opportunity of not only winning a trip but selecting which of the four destinations that they’d like to visit.
The Golden Ticket drawing is one of the featured events being held in conjunction with this year’s 2023 SEF Mardi Gras celebration slated for Thursday night at the Seguin Coliseum.
SEF Executive Director Kelly Follis says only a few of these raffle tickets remain and does not expect many if any to be available on the night of the event.
“We have something called The Golden Ticket and you can buy that online. You do not have to be present to win although it would be a lot more fun if you were and it’s $100 and we will sell 100 tickets and it’s your choice of four trips, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, Las Vegas, and Tuscany. So, four choices, $100. What do you have to lose?
Like the raffle, an online auction has also opened up giving folks, especially those who will be unable to attend Thursday’s event, the opportunity to support the foundation. Follis says several great prizes are also up for grabs. She says whether at the Mardi Gras celebration or in the comfort of your home, folks will get to bid on those things from now through the event.
“It will open up for bidding for the silent auction and your phone will tell you if somebody outbids you and it’s a lot of fun to watch what the bids do and get those things going,” said Follis.
Board of Director Debbie Magin says thanks to the online format, placing bids will also be much easier for those who will be in attendance at the event on Thursday.

Nutty Elks Artisan Craft Show set for this Saturday
(Seguin) – A new tradition of shopping continues this weekend in Seguin. The Nutty Elks Artisan and Craft Show returns this month at the Seguin Elks Lodge. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Local couple and Elks members Kristine and Douglas Bode say it’s only been a couple of months since the organization first kicked off this newest fundraiser. The vendor market will be held each third Saturday of every month.
"Right now, we are not full. The inside spots are all filled. We do have plenty of room for outside vendors as well. In fact, we are still looking for farmers and market type vendors or food vendors particularly if they already have their permits through the city or under the Texas Cottage (Food) Law because the Texas Cottage Law allows them to sell their goods because they are premade. They don't need an on-site permit so we have arts and crafts and a few direct sale vendors, so we are pretty full," said Kristine.
Douglas says the third Saturday of every month already plays an important time on the calendar for the organization.
"Not only that, but we also have our third Saturday
of the month which coincides with the Veterans Breakfast and First Responders that is going to be happening that weekend also from 9 to 11 a.m. If you wanted to come out and have some great breakfast and see some of the people in your community and just have some good clean fun," said Douglas.
Whether you stop by for the veterans breakfast, or the craft show or both, Kristine says she hopes the community will take advantage of what they can. Plus, she says fellow Elks members are always ready and willing to share more about the fraternal organization and the charities that they support.
"They can stop by, and shop and we can even give them a tour of the social quarters on the side where we enjoy each other’s company on a regular basis and see if they would like to maybe come join us for some of that fun," said Kristine.
The Nutty Elks Artisan and Craft Show will also include food and music. The event including parking is free. The Seguin Elks Lodge is located at 1331 C.H. Matthies Jr. Those wishing to learn more about being a vendor are asked to call Peggy Brietzke at 210-262-2436.
“You know how silent auctions usually hover around and you’ve got this little group, well now you can sit at the comfort of your table and watch
somebody out bid you. Instead of running over there, you can type it,” said Magin.
A link to purchase A Golden Ticket or to participate in the auction is available on both the Seguin Education Foundation and KWED/
Seguin Daily News Facebook page. Tickets to the Thursday night Mardi Gras party are also avaible. Cost is $50 a person. The event will include Cajun food and live music featuring the Dirty River band plus a host of other special games and features.
Burgers, continued.
is and how slow we move and the fact that at the end of the day as long as everyone moves safely, everyone gets to go home and see their family. So, that’s kind of what we want to bring away from it at the end of the day. ‘Hey, we are here.’ The two are combining more and more on a rapid scale with all the development and let’s be safe. Let’s understand what each person brings and here’s how we do it,” said Klaehn.
Klaehn says while the price of eggs might have been the headline these past few months, it is only a hairline illustration of all the other challenges that were being faced by those in the agricultural industry.
“Last year was one of the hardest ones we’ve seen. We saw triple the price of our fertilizer. We saw quadruple the price of our diesel and then in the drought that we went into, we saw less than one third of our normal production,” said Klaehn.
In any community, food is the one common denominator that that everyone holds interest in. He says even today’s observance is a sample of the community partnerships that go into feeding one another.
“One thing we like to do different is one, we want to interact with the public. We want to have these conversations and then all proceeds that we make off of it goes to the Christian Cupboard. The meat itself is donated by a couple of local farmers who know the importance of it. HEB made a donation as far as some of the chips for the event. That’s how we do it. We want to talk to people. We want everyone involved. We want people to see where it comes from,” said Klaehn.
The occasion was also recently marked by the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court with a proclamation observing today as Food Connection Day in Guadalupe County.
The $1 burger sale again gets underway at 11 a.m. today in the local farm bureau office. The office is located at 325 State Highway 46.
Devin Matthews Makes it Official and Signs with Texas A&M-Commerce
Chris Austin(Seguin) -- On his 19th birthday, Seguin High School senior Devin Matthews put his name down on paper to play football on the next level.
The school’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and all-purpose yards, Matthews will be taking his talents to Texas A&M-Commerce this fall. The All-State returner and District 12-5A MVP in 2022 made his commitment during a National Letter of Intent signing day at the school on Thursday morning.
“It means a lot.” Matthews said. “I’ve been dreaming about signing anywhere my whole life and I finally got to do it today, so it’s a blessing.”
Matthews plans to study sports management while attending A&MCommerce. He has aspirations to play on the pro level and says he would like to get into coaching following his playing days.
Seguin Athletic Director and head football coach Craig Dailey called Matthews one of the most electric players he’s ever seen in 20 years of coaching.
“He’s in the top three categories of receptions, yards and TD’s of anybody I’ve ever coached. “ Dailey said. “You don’t really notice that
during the season. And you’re like this guy played at A&M and this guy played U of H (University of Houston). And he’s up there with all those guys and you don’t realize until after the season how special of a player he is.”
Texas A&M-Commerce is lead by head coach Clint Dolezel. The Lions went 5-6 last season and finished tied for 4th place in the conference with a 3-3 record.
Devin Matthews lead the Seguin Matadors this past season with 2,132 all purpose yards. He hauled in 13 receiving scores and had five touchdowns on kickoff returns and one TD on a punt return. He had two rushing touchdowns including a 71 yard walk off score against Hays in the Matadors 6th win of the season.
Two other Matadors also made commitments at the signing day at Seguin High School this morning.
Hayden Ross signed his commitment to play football at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
And Jakob McLeod signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton.

Moderna: COVID Vaccine Will Remain Free
(Cambridge, MA) -- Moderna is promising to keep its COVID vaccine free for all consumers. The company announced Wednesday that everyone in the U.S. will have access to it “regardless of their ability to pay.” Moderna received backlash recently for reportedly considering a price increase for the shot. The move comes after the Biden administration announced plans last month to end COVID’s designation as a public health emergency in May. That means federal funding for vaccines would run out and uninsured Americans would have to pay out of pocket for their boosters.
OH Officials: Low Risk Of Health Hazards To Those Living Near Train Derailment Site
(Columbus, OH) -- Officials in Ohio say chemicals spilled and later burned from the East Palestine [[ pal-eh-steen ]] train derailment pose a low risk of health hazards to people in the area. Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff revealed that information yesterday. Vanderhoff recommends that folks use bottled water until all testing of municipal water sources in the area has been completed. This comes as an alarming amount of animals are dying in areas near the derailment. A resident in North Lima, which is over ten miles away, said five of her hens and a rooster died suddenly. The EPA is monitoring the situation.
FDA Advisors Recommend Selling Narcan Over The Counter
(Washington, DC) -- FDA advisors are recommending that a popular overdose treatment be sold over the counter. An independent panel said Wednesday that making Narcan nasal spray available without a prescription would significantly expand access to the life-saving treatment. Many states have already issued blanket prescriptions allowing pharmacies to distribute Narcan, which reverses opioid overdoses. The FDA is expected to make a final decision on the recommendation by March 29th.
San Diego County Working To Vaccinate Homeless After Reported Hep A Cases
(San Diego, CA) -- San Diego County health officials are working to vaccinate homeless people in shelters after five confirmed cases of Hepatitis A were reported over the past month. Of those cases, three were among homeless people and one person died. While more cases of Hep A could be reported, the number is not anywhere near the outbreak level. County health officials have yet to identify how the virus has been spreading in recent weeks. San Diego experienced a Hep A outbreak that began in 2016 and ended in 2018, resulting in nearly 600 infections and 20 deaths.
