City approves firm for future water planning By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The city is getting some help when it comes to planning for its future water and wastewater service needs. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday night approved a professional service agreement with the engineering firm Freise and Nichols. City Engineer Dave Rabago says the firm is being hired to conduct a master plan for city's water and wastewater utilities.

"The city is seeking out professional engineering services to prepare an update for a water master plan. The last update was back in 2015. We're also wanting to have them prepare a waste water master plan and also an asset management program for our water and wastewater utilities. This would help us essentially identify and update any future wastewater collection system and water distribution needs as well as it would help us with allocation of resources and

personnel when it comes to our asset management in the future. Staff recommends the approval of the professional engineering services proposal from Freise and Nichols in the amount of $536,180," said Rabago. The city completed a similar plan five years ago, but City Manager Steve Parker says with the commercial and residential growth that's taking place, it's time to develop a new plan.

Sales taxes up during 2019 holiday season By Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- It looks like more of you did your shopping locally during the holiday season. Sales taxes collected inside the city of Seguin during the month of December were up significantly over the same period a year ago.

Seguin Mayor Don Keil says it's good news about the local economy, and it also shows the economic development work that's being done at City Hall. He congratulated Economic Development Director Josh Schnueker and the rest of the staff for the hard work, which is clearly paying off.

"We probably had the largest sales tax reimbursement that we've ever had for a quarter in December. I think that bodes well for what is happening with our retail. I think it's like a 20 percent increase over last year during the same period of time so I think Josh and his peo-

ple are working well. I think things are happening within the city from the retail standpoint and I think that is all good news," said Keil. Mayor Keil released that data during Tuesday night's meeting of the Seguin City Council.

Coronavirus Death Toll Reaches 2,005 With 75,121 Cases

Chinese Restaurants Sell Food On Streets Since People Won't Go Inside

(Wuhan, China) -- More than 75-thousand people are now fighting to survive coronavirus. The number of cases just shot up with the global death toll topping two-thousand. Most are in China where four cities are desperately trying to stop the spread. They've sealed off entire communities, told people they can't leave home and banned cars on the road. The World Health Organization says the virus is not as deadly as SARS and that 80-percent of patients should recover. As far as a vaccine, that's still about 18 months away.

(Beijing) -- People still have to eat, even during a health emergency. Many Chinese restaurants in Beijing are now selling their food on the street because people won't go inside during the coronavirus outbreak. They've set up tables on sidewalks so people can come up and make purchases without having to go inside and be around other people.

Cruise Ship Quarantine Ends, Russia Bans Chinese Citizens

Japan To Begin Trial Using HIV Treatment For Coronavirus

(Wuhan, China) -- More action is being taken around the globe amid the coronavirus outbreak. Nearly three-thousand people are preparing to get off a cruise ship in Japan now that a two-week quarantine is over. The U.S. already evacuated some and several other countries are sending planes Wednesday. Ukraine also plans to send a plane to evacuate some of its citizens from China while Russia will ban Chinese citizens starting Thursday. Students in Shanghai won't return to school this semester and fashion house Prada is canceling its May show in Japan. All this as the death toll tops two-thousand.

(Tokyo, Japan) -- Japan will soon begin trials using an HIV treatment to treat the coronavirus. The government's top spokesman says health officials are preparing to start clinical trials to see whether the HIV medication can stop the infection. The spokesman couldn't comment on how long it would be before the new drug is approved. Japan has more than 500 coronavirus cases, including 450 who were on a cruise ship docked off the city of Yokohama.
