The Voice of Seguin Today

Counting down the seconds to recess

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Community input is reportedly important to the Seguin ISD as it also wants to know what you want in a new school superintendent. The district is encouraging the public to supply those answers in a newly launched online leadership survey. Sean Hoffmann, Seguin ISD chief communications officer, says the survey is all part of the school board's request that the public be involved in developing a profile of the leadership qualities desired for the new top administrator. "The superintendent search is well underway here at Seguin ISD. The trustees have hired a firm through the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to assist and consult through this process and one of these pieces that the board feels is instrumental is getting community input and feedback and having the community be a part of this process so at this point, we do have a leadership profile questionnaire posted on SeguinISD.net, the district website. The question there is pretty straight forward. It's pretty simple. It's pretty short -- granted anyone can spend as much as they want typing in responses but essentially there are three questions. We are asking the community to list strengths of Seguin ISD as well as any challenges and concerns and then to also share any professional and personal characteristics that that respondent would want to see," said Hoffmann.

Seguin ISD officials say thanks to Bond 2019 voters, playground installation is progressing quickly at Rodriguez Elementary School. The main play structure is nearly complete and the project should wrap up in the coming weeks. At McQueeney Elementary, the playground equipment is nearly complete, the shade structure is built and the connection sidewalk has been poured. The Jefferson and Patlan build sites have been fenced and grades have been set. Flat work will start in the next week or two based on the weather. Photo by Seguin ISD

Early voting continues this week SEF Foundation celebrates Fat Tuesday By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Early voting resumes for its final week for the March 3 Republican and Democratic Primary elections.

Polls for early voting, which opened on Tuesday, will continue through Friday. Since the start of early voting, a total of 6,070 ballots have been cast in Guadalupe County. Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says she couldn't be more proud of the turnout thus far. "The early voting turn out has been incredible. The voters are clearly motivated to come out and make their voice and make their vote count and they have been turning out across the county. It's been incredible," said Hayes.

Seguin families are invited to come out and celebrate Fat Tuesday. Tickets are still available for tonight's Fat Tuesday Celebration at the Seguin Coliseum. Hosting the Mardi Gras event is the Seguin Education Foundation. The group wanted to change things up a bit in hosting its annual fundraiser which has typically been called Denim and Diamonds. The Mardi Gras celebration comes complete with a Creole Bar, New Orleans Hurricanes, King Cake and large raffle. Raffle prizes include a $1,500 gift certificate from Ascot Travel, a one carat diamond earrings from San Anthony Jewelry; an Apple Watch and a $200 gift card to D&D Texas Outfitters. The event will also feature music plus live and silent auctions. Tickets for the event are $45 per person. Tickets for the raffle are also being independently sold. They are $20 each. Both the event or raffle tickets can be purchased from any SEF board member, at Seguin Radio KWED, Gift & Gourmet or by calling 830-556-8993.

Hayes says heavy traffic has been reported at each of the early voting locations. Those six locations again include the Guadalupe County Elections Office in Seguin at 215 S. Milam St; the Guadalupe County Elections Office in Schertz at 1101 Elbel Rd; Grace Church in

New Braunfels at 3240 FM 725; the Central Texas Technology Center in New Braunfels at 2189 FM 758, New Berlin City Hall at 9180 FM 775, and the Cibolo Fire Station Number Two at 3864 Cibolo Valley Dr.

Hayes says other than a few minor reminders for voters, the process of early voting has overall been a smooth one. "Everything is running really smoothly. We've had the same situation we have in early election where there are voters who don't realize they can't wear electioneering gear -- hats, t-shirts, buttons and all that from the candidate or the campaign they are supporting. We've had a couple of instances of that where we have had to ask voters to remove a hat but nothing drastic. We've got a lot of candidates out there campaigning. For the most part, they are staying outside the 100 foot distance marker so we are keeping an eye on things and so far, things are going fairly w e l l , " s a i d Hayes. Hayes says like in every primary election, the important reminder AGAIN for all voters is that they will have to

choose either a Republican or Democratic ballot while signing in. All locally contested races for Seguin and Guadalupe County appear on the Republican ballot. There are no locally contested Democratic races although both ballots have nomination races for state positions and most importantly, the nomination for the President of the United States.

Voters are reminded that voting in a party primary does not bind them to vote for that same party's candidates in November. Hayes say you can vote for any candidate from any party or even independent candidates with no party affiliation during the November General Election. Hayes says the county's adoption of Vote Centers allows any Guadalupe County registered voter the opportunity to cast a ballot at any of the six early voting polling locations. She says this also holds true for election day when voters can vote at any location regardless of the precinct in which they reside. All in all, Hayes says whether it's early voting or election day, the elections office is doing all that it can to make sure your voice is heard "We put a party on for 104,000 people and we hope that they all come," said Hayes. Polls will be open today through Friday at each early voting location from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The invitation to participate in the survey is not limited to only those with students in the district. Hoffmann says the district wants to ensure it becomes available to all involved stakeholders. "The trustees are looking to have feedback from stakeholders within Seguin ISD so naturally, that would be any resident that lives with the district boundaries is encouraged to show their input in this search process," said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says again, the board is insisting that this process be a community effort and has been made easy.

Chinese President: Coronavirus Worst Health Crisis Since Report: Coronavirus May Result In Drug Shortages Founding Of PRC (Beijing) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping [[ she jeen-peeng ]] says the coronavirus is the worst public health crisis in China since the country was founded in 1949. More than 77thousand cases of the respiratory illness have been recorded in mainland China since the outbreak began in late December. More than 26-hundred people have died. Xi said Sunday that the situation is still severe and complex, with efforts to prevent and control the virus at their most critical stage. While Xi said those efforts are starting to have an effect, the outbreak will likely have a great impact on the Chinese economy.

(Washington, DC) -- Health officials are keeping an eye on prescription drug supplies as the coronavirus outbreak continues. About 150 drugs including antibiotics are on a list of medications that could be affected by decreased production of ingredients in China. According to the website Axios, the FDA had no direct comment about the list but confirmed the agency is very aware the outbreak could impact the medical supply chain. An FDA spokesperson said the agency will take swift action to mitigate the impact of any such shortage on U.S. patients and health care professions.

Italy Restricting Travel Over Coronavirus Outbreak

Most Americans Now Like Obamacare

(Rome) -- Italy is cordoning off areas around the country to stop the spread of the coronavirus. There are now travel restrictions in some areas of northern Italy after a surge in cases of the respiratory illness. Public facilities like schools have also been closed. The city of Venice has called of the last days of its carnival, which typically brings in thousands of tourists a year. Over a 150 people in Italy have been infected with the coronavirus and at least three have already died.

(Washington, DC) -- Obamacare is more popular today than ever before. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll says 55-percent of Americans view the Affordable Care Act favorably. Only 37-percent view it unfavorably. That's the highest mark for the health care law since Kaiser began asking that question ten years ago. It's still unpopular among Republicans with 84percent against, but few of those say repealing it is a top priority. Only three-percent of Republicans say that.
