Seguin native receives life sentence in North Texas murder
(Lubbock) — A 24-yearold former Seguin man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hollis “Reid” Daniels heard his fate in a Lubbock courtroom on Friday evening.
The jury deliberated for three days before deciding to send Daniels to prison for the rest of his life. Daniels pleaded guilty to the capital murder of Texas Tech University Police Officer Floyd East Jr., which immediately sent the trial into the sentencing phase.
The jury heard testimony for nearly three weeks, before starting its deliberations earlier this week. The jurors had two choices to make — either sentence Daniels to death, or to give him life in prison. The jury had to first answer two
questions — was Daniels likely to be a danger in the future, and were there circumstances that might make life in prison the better option in this case? The jurors in the end opted for the latter, and Daniels will now spend the rest of his behind bars. Daniels shot and killed Officer East on October 9, 2017 at the university’s police station. He was 19-years old at the time of the killing and was a student at Texas Tech.

Golfers invited to swing in support of local charity
(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is invited to grab its golf clubs and join Leadership Seguin in making a big difference in the lives of local students. The annual leadership program, directed by the Seguin Chamber of commerce, will hold a charity golf tournament on March 9.
GRMC Wellness center director Josh Wilson is a member of this year’s leadership class and highlighted some of the fun planned for the event.
“Our Leadership Seguin group is hosting a golf tournament to raise money for Seguin Youth Services,” Wilson said. “The tournament is called Swing for Seguin Youth Services. It will be on March 9. It will be a shotgun start at 8:30. It will be a lot of fun and a great event. We’ll have tacos in the morning, a burger bar, drink tickets throughout the day, and some games on different holes.”
The cost to enter is $750 for a four-person team; anyone is welcome to participate. Seguin Youth Services is a local non-profit providing after-school care and enrichment for area students and will benefit directly from participants enjoying a day on the green.
“All that money we raise goes directly to Seguin Youth Services to help them with some of their projects, like fixing the roof and the vans and just providing some after-school care for the kids. It’s a great event.
We hope people will come to join us. We’re still looking for another ten to fifteen teams. It’s going to be a fun day.”
As for why Leadership Seguin selected Seguin Youth
Services as its project for the year, class member Katie Poth of First United Bank explained what the group experienced when they arrived at SYS for the first time.
“There were moldy ceiling tiles, chipped and mismatched paint, broken furniture, curtain rods falling down, and ceiling tiles missing, so there’s definitely a need to clean it up and make it a more creative environment for children to be able to play in,” Poth said. “We really just saw the potential to build a better after-school life for them. So we’re excited. It was honestly a really beautiful moment. Our entire team was able to step in to the building for Seguin Youth Services and see the amount of need that was clearly present. I think we walked around the building for maybe ten minutes, locked eyes with each other, and were like, ‘this is the one,’ we really don’t need to go look anywhere else.”
The Leadership Seguin Class of 2023 said they were deeply moved by the needs of SYS and hope the local community will step up to help lift a community program that helps so many.
To register for the Swing for the event, visit: https://www.seguinchamber.com/events/details/ swing-for-seguin-youth-services-3940 or contact the Seguin Chamber of Commerce at 830-379-6382.
The charity golf tournament kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on March 9 at the Bandit Golf course in New Braunfels, which means there’s still plenty of time for you or your business to round up a team and Swing for Seguin Youth Services.

Navarro Falls to 5A Victoria East in Panther Classic Championship
Chris Austin
(Geronimo) -- The Victoria East Titans rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the Panther Classic championship in a 5-3 victory over Navarro on Saturday night in Geronimo.
The UIL Class 5A Titans took advantage of a couple of errors by the Class 4A Panthers to score five unearned runs to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead and hold on to claim the championship. Navarro hurler Blaine Pircher was the bad luck loser as he pitched five and 1/3 innings only giving up four hits and striking out four.
The Panthers would get on the board first when Navarro designated hitter Cole Zimmer
singled home right fielder Landun Taylor in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor would score again in the third inning sliding under a tag at home on a fielder’s choice to give the Panthers a 2-0.
Navarro would get a triple to deep right field from shortstop Caleb Wood in the sixth inning that would plate catcher Matthew Villanueva to round out the scoring for the Panthers. Wood and Villanueva had two of the four hits on the night for Navarro. Taylor and Zimmer also had hits for the Panthers
After beating Austin Akins 17-4 and Gidding 10-7 on Thursday, Navarro beat Floresville 9-1 thanks to a complete game from pitcher Bryce Nall on Saturday morning to reach
the championship game. Navarro head coach Kris Cavazos lauded his team’s effort over the weekend.
“They played great all weekend and even this game, we were ahead five innings to a powerhouse 5A program and they just had a big inning and it hurt us.” Cavazos said. “Overall, this weekend was awesome. I saw a lot of things that I loved and that I’m proud of and we’re gonna build off that on Tuesday and the next tournament.”
The Panthers are 4-1 overall on the season. Navarro will be in Taylor on Tuesday to take on the Ducks before playing in the Austin ISD tournament which starts on Thursday.

CDC Data Shows Flu Shot Protection Helped Significantly This Season
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says the flu shot did its job providing “substantial protection” this season. New data shows it reduced the risk of hospitalization from the flu by almost 75-percent among children and about half in adults. Results also showed vaccinated adults were half as likely to get sick at all from the flu or visit the emergency room. A CDC official added that adults 65 and older or those who are immunocompromised especially should consider the flu vaccine since it provides important protection.
Americans Want Government To Focus On Lowering Health Care Costs
(Washington, DC) -- Half of Americans want the government to focus on lowering prescription drug prices and making healthcare more affordable. According to the Axios-Ipsos American Health Index, they want that prioritized over other issues relating to public health. Meanwhile, 14-percent said they want to prioritize reducing deaths from guns and another 14-percent said they value research into cures and treatments for diseases most. The survey also found three in four Americans think the businesses and government don’t prioritize the health and safety of consumers.
More Women Dying During Childbirth
(Undated) -- More women are dying during childbirth in the U.S. A new report from the World Health Organization found that maternal mortality rates have jumped 75 -percent over the past two decades. That puts the U.S. on a list of countries like Greece and the Dominican Republic with a worrying increase. The report suggests part of the spike is from women having less access to quality healthcare during pregnancy. Worldwide, mortality rates have remained about the same.
Laxatives Possibly Linked With Dementia
(Undated) -- There’s a potential link between dementia and regular laxative use, but researchers warn to interpret the findings with caution. The research, still in the very early stages, was published Wednesday in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology. It found regular laxative users had a onepoint-three percent chance of developing dementia, compared with point-four percent for those who didn’t. However, regular users were also more likely to have a chronic illness and regularly take other medications.
