The Voice of Seguin Today

Volume 55, Number 041 830-379-2234

Early voting wraps up today Downtown construction in Guadalupe County By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Today is the last day to cast you ballots early for the March 3 Republican and Democratic Primary elections. At the end of Wednesday, a total of 9,803 votes had been cast in Guadalupe County. That number is obviously higher as voters continued to pour into local polling locations all day Thursday. Voters have six early voting locations in which to choose from. The locations include the Guadalupe County Elections Office in Seguin at 215 S. Milam St; the Guadalupe County Elections Office in Schertz at 1101 Elbel Rd; Grace Church in New Braunfels at 3240 FM 725; the Central Texas Technology Center in New Braunfels at 2189 FM 758, New Berlin City Hall at 9180 FM 775, and the Cibolo Fire Station Number Two at 3864 Cibolo Valley Dr. Once at the polls, voters will be asked to choose either a Republican or Democratic ballot while signing in. Do note that all locally contested races for Seguin and Guadalupe County appear on the Republican ballot. There are no

locally contested Democratic races although both ballots have nomination races for state positions as well as for the nomination for the President of the United States. Voters are reminded that voting in a party primary does not bind them to vote for that same party's candidates in November. Voters can still select a candidate from any party or even independent candidates with no party affiliation during the November General Election. The handful of locally contested races appearing on the March 2020 Republican Primary Election include two county wide races. The first is for Guadalupe County Sheriff. In that race, Incumbent Arnold Zwicke faces candidate Jimmy Harless, precinct 2 Guadalupe County Constable. The other race is for the 25th Judicial District judge seat. Incumbent William "Bill Old is seeking reelection. Old faces challenger Jacqueline Phillips Ott, who currently serves as a prosecutor in the Guadalupe County Attorney's Office. This position also serves the counties of Gonzales, Lavaca and Colorado. Other races appearing on the

Republican ballot include Precinct 1 County Commissioner. Incumbent Greg Seidenberger seeks another term against newcomer Grumpy Azzoz. The Precinct 3 seat on the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court is also up for grabs. Candidates seeking the position include former Schertz Mayor Michael Carpenter and former Schertz City Councilman Cedric Edwards. Longtime Commissioner Jim Wolverton has chosen not to seek re-election. Two candidates will also face off for the position of Guadalupe County Constable Pct. 2. They include candidates Trey Kelly and Mark Reyes. Kelly is retired from the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, while Reyes currently serves the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office as a patrol sergeant. Polls will remain open today until 7 p.m. at each early voting location. Polls will resume operation on Tuesday, March 3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at all regular voting locations.

Several crews have been working around the clock installing mast arms for new traffic signals in a number of downtown intersections. Several intersections were closed Thursday night to allow the TxDOT crews to get the job done. In the meantime, drivers are urged to use caution around any remaining work.
