The Voice of Seguin Today

Volume 55, Number 041 830-379-2234

Early voting wraps up today Downtown construction in Guadalupe County By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Today is the last day to cast you ballots early for the March 3 Republican and Democratic Primary elections. At the end of Wednesday, a total of 9,803 votes had been cast in Guadalupe County. That number is obviously higher as voters continued to pour into local polling locations all day Thursday. Voters have six early voting locations in which to choose from. The locations include the Guadalupe County Elections Office in Seguin at 215 S. Milam St; the Guadalupe County Elections Office in Schertz at 1101 Elbel Rd; Grace Church in New Braunfels at 3240 FM 725; the Central Texas Technology Center in New Braunfels at 2189 FM 758, New Berlin City Hall at 9180 FM 775, and the Cibolo Fire Station Number Two at 3864 Cibolo Valley Dr. Once at the polls, voters will be asked to choose either a Republican or Democratic ballot while signing in. Do note that all locally contested races for Seguin and Guadalupe County appear on the Republican ballot. There are no

locally contested Democratic races although both ballots have nomination races for state positions as well as for the nomination for the President of the United States. Voters are reminded that voting in a party primary does not bind them to vote for that same party's candidates in November. Voters can still select a candidate from any party or even independent candidates with no party affiliation during the November General Election. The handful of locally contested races appearing on the March 2020 Republican Primary Election include two county wide races. The first is for Guadalupe County Sheriff. In that race, Incumbent Arnold Zwicke faces candidate Jimmy Harless, precinct 2 Guadalupe County Constable. The other race is for the 25th Judicial District judge seat. Incumbent William "Bill Old is seeking reelection. Old faces challenger Jacqueline Phillips Ott, who currently serves as a prosecutor in the Guadalupe County Attorney's Office. This position also serves the counties of Gonzales, Lavaca and Colorado. Other races appearing on the

Republican ballot include Precinct 1 County Commissioner. Incumbent Greg Seidenberger seeks another term against newcomer Grumpy Azzoz. The Precinct 3 seat on the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court is also up for grabs. Candidates seeking the position include former Schertz Mayor Michael Carpenter and former Schertz City Councilman Cedric Edwards. Longtime Commissioner Jim Wolverton has chosen not to seek re-election. Two candidates will also face off for the position of Guadalupe County Constable Pct. 2. They include candidates Trey Kelly and Mark Reyes. Kelly is retired from the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, while Reyes currently serves the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office as a patrol sergeant. Polls will remain open today until 7 p.m. at each early voting location. Polls will resume operation on Tuesday, March 3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at all regular voting locations.

Several crews have been working around the clock installing mast arms for new traffic signals in a number of downtown intersections. Several intersections were closed Thursday night to allow the TxDOT crews to get the job done. In the meantime, drivers are urged to use caution around any remaining work.

Field of Honor Committee to host fundraising dance awesome silent auction items that you can bid on. You can walk away with a great bargain. Then we have Clint Taft and the Buck Wild Band. They will perform starting at 7 and when he takes breaks in between and then an hour before and an hour after he's done, we have DJ Izzy D that is also going to help us out and play a variety of music. So, we will have music for everyone," said Ramirez.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) — A local group that gifted the community last year with its Field of Honor event remains busy planning for yet another year. However this time, the group is tackling the project a little bit earlier in hopes of securing the groundwork needed to salute our first responders and military heroes. Connie Ramirez, one of the founding members of the local chapter of the Field of Honor Committee, says the group will be hosting a Celebrating Our Heroes Dinner, Dance and Silent Auction this Saturday at the American Legion Post 245 Hall.

Ramirez says she hopes the community comes out to help support the planning process for this year's Field of Honor event. She says Seguin will again be one of the few Texas host sites in 2020. Like the Healing Field established after the 911 terrorist attacks on America, the Field of Honor is the Colonial Flag Foundation's continued effort to remember and honor the sacrifices and heroism that go into celebrating America. Last year, Ramirez says the local event posted 1,000 American Flags.

"The money raised from that will go to help support the field. There are invoices that we have to get paid in order to bring the field to life and so that's what we are working toward so when people start sponsoring flags and buying flags for their loved ones, the money raised from that goes directly to the SS American Memorial so the money stays local but the SS American Memorial helps so many first responders, veterans, military throughout the year. There are thousands of troops that come in and out of their gates and it's right here in Seguin," said Ramirez.

The event, hosted over the Fourth of July week, plants 7 and a half foot tall poles and American flags in honor of or in memory of a loved one. The $30 donations collected for the flags are then, as Ramirez mentioned, donated to the SS American Memorial located at the Lazy U Ranch here in Seguin. Ramirez says tickets for Saturday night's dinner and dance are $20 pre-sale or $30 at the door. She says residents will be treated to a fun night of fun and celebration.

"We posted a little over 1,000 flags last year and we had about 730 flags that were actually sponsored so this year, we hope to have 100 percent sponsored now that the community kind of knows what it is and we want them to be able to come out and enjoy it and have a memorial or something for their loved ones out there," said Ramirez.

The Field of Honor event has been described as a patriotic sea of read, white and blue -- consuming the field at Faith Lutheran Church just across the street from Seguin High School on State Highway 123 Bypass.

"What you get with that $20 is from 6 to 7 p.m., we are having dinner. So, you get to come in an hour early before the dance starts, enjoy a dinner, look at the silent auction items. We have some awesome,

TLU Men's Basketball, the defending conference champion and winner of four of the last five conference tournaments, opens the SCAC tournament with a 2 p.m. Friday quarterfinal matchup against Southwestern University. TLU (14-11, 11-7 SCAC) is the No. 3 seed. Southwestern (12-13, 8-10) is the No. 6 seed.

As previously stated, head-to-head results (1-1) doesn't break the tie between Dallas and Southwestern – therefore, differentiation is determined by once again working down the standings. Both went 0-2 against both St. Thomas and Centenary. However, Southwestern split its two games against Austin College while Dallas was swept by the 'Roos - giving the Pirates the No. 6 seed to next weekend's tournament.

TLU won both regular-season meetings against the Pirates. The Bulldogs won 77-69 in Seguin, Texas on Jan. 3 and won 78-76 on Jan. 31 in Georgetown, Texas. TLU Women's Basketball, also the defending conference champion, plays in the SCAC tournament quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday against tournament host Schreiner. TLU is the No. 5 seed, and Schreiner is the No. 4 seed.

For the Trinity University women, this year's tournament represents the fifth consecutive year they have been the No. 1 seed. New Case Of Coronavirus In California Makes 60 In U.S.

Social Media Sharing How Pence Handled HIV Outbreak

(Atlanta, GA) -- A new case of coronavirus in the U.S. is spreading new panic. That's because the CDC doesn't know how the person got sick. The patient is in Northern California and didn't travel to another country or come in contact with anyone else infected. This makes 60 national cases, but more are expected. The CDC says steps have been taken to prepare for such outbreaks. Still, businesses, schools and communities are urged to have a plan and be ready.

(Washington, DC) -- Now that Vice President Mike Pence is in charge of the nation's response to the coronavirus, social media is re-examining how he handled an HIV outbreak when he was governor of Indiana. When more than 200 people in one county were infected in 2015, the idea was presented for a needle exchange. Then-Governor Pence responded by saying he was going to go home and pray on it. The exchange was eventually established two months after the outbreak. Trump on Wednesday said Pence is "very expert at the field" of healthcare and will do a great job confronting the coronavirus. The Pence appointment was raked over the coals by some Democrats and social media users.

Trump: Risk Of Coronavirus Low, Safety Top Priority (Washington, DC) -- President Trump says he'll do whatever is necessary to keep people protected from coronavirus. He's also ready to spend whatever is needed. The White House has requested two-and-a-half-billion dollars though some lawmakers are asking for up to eight billion. Trump calls the risk low, crediting travel restrictions in place. He's also put Vice President Pence in charge of the response. Pence says he's working with health experts and state leaders daily and will add more staff to help. This update comes as national cases jump to 60.

CDC Officials: Coronavirus Outbreak In U.S. Appears Inevitable (Washington, DC) -- CDC officials say a coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. appears inevitable. Dr. Nancy Messonnier says, "It's not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness." The CDC is urging people to prepare for serious disruptions, including travel restrictions if there's community spread of COVID-19. Schools and businesses are being told to draw up remote learning and telecommuting plans if there are closures.
