Bonus incentive to keep Seguin ISD employees on the job
(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is doing its part to help retain its teachers and all other employees for the next school year.
The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a retention stipend for all those existing employees, who choose to continue their commitment to the school district and the students that it serves. The stipend includes $1,000 for teachers and $500 for all other employees.
Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez says this type of bonus unfortunately is the latest in trends being used by districts to retain teachers and other staff.
“We are facing a staffing crisis in education – I think just like many other industries but particularly with education, we are starting to see fewer college students decide that they are going to enroll in a teacher prep program at a university. You are starting to see fewer people engage in alternative teacher preparation programs and teachers who are leaving the profession and teachers who are opting to stay home because it is a demanding role being a teacher. We experienced a significant hardship last summer because we received a lot of late notice resignations in late June or early July of last year for some very hard to fill positions particularly special education, CTE, Spanish, (and) dual language,” said Gutierrez.

Texas Task Force looks at teacher retention
(Austin) -- As the Seguin ISD and other area districts look to shore up their teaching staffs for next year, the state of Texas is also looking at more ways that it can help retain teachers across the state. A Texas task force that’s looking into teacher vacancy is finding that salaries are one of three main reasons why people are leaving the teaching profession.
Mike Morath, who heads up the Texas Education Association, gave lawmakers an update this week in Austin.
“Of 378,000 teachers in the state of Texas, on average, they make $58,887. Starting teachers in rural Texas ain’t making that. Each school district controls their approach to compensation,” said Morath.
Commissioner Morath says there are a number of challenges, but he thinks things are improving.
“I think we’ve seen, like roughly a four times increase
in the number of six-figure salaries paid teachers in the state of Texas, which is great news,” said Morath.
In addition to the need to increase teacher salaries, the state’s Teacher Vacancy Task Force also found that improved working conditions, and better training for teachers need to be prioritized here in the Lone Star State.
Seguin ISD approves school calendar for
(Seguin) -- The majority of Seguin ISD families and district stakeholders apparently wanted to keep their winter dates somewhat the same for this upcoming holiday season. The school calendar approved Tuesday by the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees was the result of an online community survey that prompted folks to choose from two different options.
Explaining the difference between both of those calendar options was Sean Hoffmann, chief communications for the Seguin ISD.
"Back in January, the Teacher Communication Council, we worked with them closely and went over several calendar scenarios. They came up with two calendars and Sample 2 which went out to our school community and stakeholders and the sample one calendar, 56 percent of our respondents preferred this calendar. It's a very traditional calendar. It's very similar to the calendar we are in right now. The sample two option that was provide for consideration had Christmas starting a little bit later
in December going into Wednesday with the break starting on a Thursday in December before Christmas and then having that holiday break go a little bit later that first week in January," said Hoffmann.
Although approved by the school board, the decision was not unanimous. Voting against the calendar was Trustee Josh Bright. Bright says it wasn’t the dates for the winter break that he questioned, but instead the dates earmarked for intersession. Like the past couple of years, the Seguin ISD again included fall and spring intersession dates, which are designed to provide extra time for the district to work
2023-2024
with students who need extra help academically. For the next school year, those dates are Oct. 18-20 and Feb. 1-2. Bright said he would have preferred those dates be folded into some other planned breaks throughout the year.
"My biggest thing is 75 percent of the community has to deal with childcare stuff during intersession. Could we add those days to the summer? Could we do something for intersession so that it's better for the rest of the community. We've targeted 25 percent of the community that needs support and it's great and we need to give it to them. However, that leaves a lot of other people out there who need to take time off from work or have to juggle things around for their families. The spring one is only like three weeks after we come back from winter break and with the weather inclement problems that we've had lately – that's one of the reasons why I brought that one particularly up but overall, that's six days for the school year that we could add... Incentive, continued.
Prior to this one-time stipend, the district’s Human Resources Department had already started other preparations for the next school year. Dr. Gutierrez says in effort to avoid the struggle of filling those last-minute vacancies next year, the district earlier this year had already rolled out another set of incentives -- incentives that helped employees turn in those early resignation requests.
“We also did offer an early resignation notice incentive as well because of what we experienced last year and it was only teachers who had a window of time in which if they were thinking about resigning, there was an incentive for them to put in their notice early so that we can begin hiring teachers beginning in March. That incentive was for a time period. For several weeks, it was $1,000 and then for two weeks, it was $500
Calendar, continued.
“...to either to like a summer break or a winter break and target those 25 percent of those people in a different type of program whether it be like ACE or after school tutoring or some other type of intervention to help them close the gap," said Bright.
Bright's issue with the intersession dates, however, reportedly extends beyond the inconvenience that it might have on families. Bright says he questions the overall impact that these additional days of school have with helping students move ahead.
depending on the timeline in which they gave their notice,” said Dr. Gutierrez.
Dr. Gutierrez says thanks to extra funds available to the district, they’ll be able to pay out these one-time funds in October.
“If you look at our resignation list right now, it is quite lengthy but it’s because we did offer that incentive. We have some residual ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funding that came as a result of COVID that we are going to be able to utilize to be able to do this and one of the commitments that we made when we received this funding was to do what we can to recognize and award our teachers and so there have been some things that we have been able to do to provide one time stipends. So, this is going to be another measure to really recognize the work of not only teachers but all employees,” said Dr. Gutierrez.
Seguin ISD officials say an estimated $1 million is being allocated to cover these retention stipends for employees across the district.
With the information that was given tonight on the intersession program, I didn't really feel like there was the data to support those intersession dates. I'm saying in my opinion, I don't see the data supporting intersession," said Bright.
The intersession days were incorporated to give struggling students additional support. Students are personally invited by educators to participate in the program. All other students get the day off. The school board on Tuesday also learned of a survey that illustrated support for the program
by local families. A total of 1,000 people responded to the survey on intersession. Of those 1,000 people, less than 20 reportedly had negative concerns with the districtwide program.
The Seguin Daily News later on this week will have more on this survey as it discusses the positive impact that the intercession calendar is reportedly having on students. That's all according to Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez.
The approved calendar for the 2023-2024 school year is available for viewing on the Seguin ISD website, seguinisd.net.

TLU Baseball Rallies to Win, 9-5, Over UMHB

BELTON, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball scored nine unanswered runs to rally for a 9-5 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday at Red Murff Field in Belton, Texas.
The Bulldogs (4-7) scored four runs in the sixth to tie the game up before scoring four more runs in the ninth to complete the comeback victory over the Crusaders.
Holden Philippus (San Antonio/San Antonio Christian) got the Bulldogs on the board with an RBI single in the fifth inning. Philippus would drive in two runs on the night.
Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) went 1-for-2 with a grand slam, the first home run of his collegiate career. Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer. Freshman Mason Goudeau
(Liberty/Liberty), making his first collegiate start, went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) pitched the final five innings and earned the win, shutting out the Crusaders while striking out seven and only allowing one hit.
UMHB got out to a 5-0 lead over TLU before they got on the board. The Bulldogs scored a run in the fifth when Holden Philippus singled to center field to score R.J. Carrillo (Alice/Alice).
Texas Lutheran knotted the game up with a four run top of the sixth courtesy of the grand slam from Niko Garcia.
With the game still tied 5-5 going to the ninth, the Bulldogs plated four more runs on three hits to go up 9-5. A Niko Garcia walk and R.J. Carrillo single got the ninth inning barrage started. After
a pitching change, Holden Philippus would plate Payton Dahl (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge), who pinch ran for Garcia, on a sacrifice fly. Tyler Post would break the game open with a three-run home run to cap the inning - bringing the game to its final score of 9-5.
The Bulldogs are back home at Katt-Isbel Field on Tuesday, March 7, as they take on DeSales University at 6 PM in non-conference action. All streaming and live stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.

Officials Push To Close Budget Shortfall For 9/11 Program
(New York, NY) -- Officials from New York and New Jersey are working to close a budget shortfall in the World Trade Center Health Program. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says the program that helps 9/11 first responders will need at least another two-billion-dollars as soon as 2028, saying that’s not far off for those battling 9/11 related illnesses. The bipartisan bill would increase funding and change the program’s funding formula to keep pace with increasing costs. It would also expand coverage to those who responded to the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Biden Hits Republicans Over Entitlement Spending
(Virginia Beach, VA) -- President Biden says spending cuts demanded by Republicans in exchange for raising the debt limit would damage entitlement programs millions of Americans depend on. While speaking in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Biden accused so-called “MAGA” Republicans of targeting the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid. He said gutting the programs would strip healthcare away from millions of Americans. The President said House Republicans making demands in exchange for their votes to raise the debt ceiling are “playing politics” with the lives of Americans and the nation’s economy. Estimates say the U.S. could default on the national debt as soon as June if Congress fails to raise the federal borrowing limit.
YouTube Gives Bad Sleep Advice
(Boston, MA) -- YouTube isn’t the best place to go for sleep advice. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston say they discovered an alarming amount of medical misinformation in YouTube videos about sleep disorders. Lead author Rebecca Robbins says health information is more nuanced and demands more detail than what’s squished into YouTube videos that have clickbait and appeal to shorter attention spans. Findings show popular videos averaged more than eight million views while videos made by medical experts averaged 300-thousand. The study also found more than 65-percent of popular videos contained commercial bias or promoted a product or service.
Researchers Working On AI To Predict Alzheimer’s Disease
(Gainesville, FL) -- Researchers in Florida are working on an artificial intelligence system that can predict which patients will develop Alzheimer’s Disease up to five years before a diagnosis. There are currently no early screening tests for the disease, but data scientists at the University of Florida are trying to change that. They say A-I models can extract known risks of Alzheimer’s from electronic health records and serve as powerful tools in the screening process. Chief Data Scientist Jiang Bian says the models they tested scored “excellent’ to “outstanding,” but more testing is needed before they’re made available to doctors.
