Kickball fundraiser still accepting teams
(Seguin) -- Instead of swinging for the fences, they’ll be kicking to the fences during this weekend’s kickball fundraiser benefiting Seguin Little League. The kickball tournament is set for Saturday at the Little League Fields in Max Starcke Park.
Board President Amanda Peterson says it’s not too late to come out and participate. She says folks can either bring a team or have a team waiting for them.

“If you want to make a team, you can. For a team, it’s $250. You can bring anybody you want. If you don’t have anybody and you say that you don’t have anybody ‘to play kickball with me,’ still come down. We will put you on a team. We will make teams because we had people that have reached out and said, ‘I don’t know anybody. I’m new to town.’ Come on down. It’s $25 for individuals and we want as many people to come out and have a lot of fun with us,” said Peterson.
Each team will consist of 12 players. Peterson says registration will also be available on the day of the tournament.
“It’s going to start at 9 o’clock in the morning. That’s when we are hoping to start our first set of games. Each team should play about three games. We are going to have some pool games just to see how you are and see where we are going to put you and then we will start our bracket games,” said Peterson.
Peterson says all proceeds will go back to Little League. She says the group is hoping to make improvements at the local fields.
“The money is going to a great project that we want to get taken care of for the kids of Little League. We are hoping to raise enough money to start expanding our dugouts and adding onto them because anybody who has played Little League knows our dugouts are small and they get kind of cramped especially as the boys and girls get bigger. As they grow up, it’s just more space that they are taking up so we are running out of room (and) we are trying to make the dugouts bigger for them,” said Peterson. Kickball, pg. 3

Young debutantes to be presented this weekend
(Seguin) — The Mid-Texas Symphony Guild will once again be presenting this year’s round of debutantes
Kathy Nossaman of the Mid-Texas Symphony, says the group is excited about presenting the 11 young ladies during this Saturday’s Mid-Texas Symphony Ball and Debutante Presentation at the Seguin Coliseum.
She says the program plays a significant role in the shaping of today’s young people.
“The Debutante program is first and foremost an educational program, giving high school students, both girls and boys, the opportunity to develop practical life skills to prepare them for entry into today’s adult world. The Debutantes and their Escorts participate in community service, leadership development, social, dining and business etiquette. The program includes fundraising and attending concerts. The Debutante Ball is the icing on the cake,” said Nossaman.
Nossaman says after a year of learning lifelong
lessons, the ball, which is an elegant evening of dinner, dancing and silent auction, helps to culminate those experiences. .
“My favorite part of the program is seeing the students mature during the year. We always ask last year’s Debutantes to help with the Mother and Daughter Tea for the new Debutante class. It’s fun to see the level of maturity at the end of the season compared to the beginning. I also love watching the students usher at symphony concerts. They handle that task with ease and grace, assisting older patrons to their seats,” said Nossaman.
The debutante program began in 1987 as part of the educational and fundraising activities of the guild.
This year’s list of debutantes include Brianna Allen of Seguin High School; Abby Burns of Seguin High School; Brynlee Edwards of Seguin

Eli Lilly Announces Insulin Price Cuts Amid Ongoing Criticism (Indianapolis, IN) -- Eli Lilly is announcing 70-percent price cuts on its most commonly prescribed insulin. The move comes as Eli Lilly and other insulin makers face ongoing criticism about high prices driving some diabetics to ration the life-saving drug. Starting in October, the price of a Humalog 100 units vial will be slashed to 66-dollars, down from two-hundred-seventy-four. And Lilly, based in Indianapolis, says starting in May, it’ll cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at 35-dollars a month for people with insurance. Eli Lilly and two foreign pharmaceutical companies with New Jersey headquarters, Novo Nordisk and Sanofi, control the insulin market.
FBI Director Wray: China Lab Leak “Most Likely” COVID Source (Washington, DC) -- FBI Director Christopher Wray says the Bureau believes COVID-19 “most likely” originated in a lab controlled by the Chinese government. Wray shared during an interview with Fox News on Tuesday. Wray also said China “has been doing its best” to block efforts to identify the source of the pandemic. The Energy Department has reached the same conclusion as the FBI. Other government agencies have said it’s more likely that the virus jumped from animals to humans through a seafood and wildlife market in Wuhan, China where a government-owned lab has conducted research into coronaviruses.

(Jackson, MS) -- Mississippi is the latest state to ban gender-affirming treatments for transgender youth. Ask the Master GARDENERS
Q: The Texas mountain laurels are blooming and smell just wonderful. What other spring blooming shrubs will grow in this area?
A: There are quite a few spring bloomers that we have around Seguin. Both the Japanese wisteria and the Texas wisteria will grow here even though both like acid soils the best. There is one on Meadowlake Drive near me that blooms every year. Pyracantha, although not a native, grows here. Ornamental pears can be found all over Seguin. Doug Welsh, extension horticulturist, considers Aristocrat to be a variety that is superior to the Bradford. The Eastern redbud, the Mexican redbud, and the Texas redbud grow well here. I am particularly fond of the Mexican redbud because of its glossy foliage. Another native, the Mexican buckeye, is also one of my favorites with its lovely pink flowers and interesting seed capsules.
The showiest little tree around Seguin is the Mexican plum, Prunus Mexicana, a Texas native with fragrant white flowers. Wildflower.org says that the mature trunk of the tree becomes satiny blue-gray with darker, horizontal striations. My tree is fairly young so I have yet to see this. It was covered in blooms last year, and one or two are starting to show now. This native is a low water user, likes sun or part shade, is cold tolerant, and likes dry to moist well-drained soils that can be sandy loam, clay loam, clay or limestone-based. The fruit is edible, and the tree is the
larval host of the Tiger Swallowtail and the Cecropia moth. It is not deer resistant and is of special value to native bees.
Q: When do I apply my spring lawn fertilizer?
A: Apply lawn fertilizer after you have mowed the lawn grass twice, says Welsh. You want to make sure that the grass is ready to use the fertilizer so it must be actively growing. (In the fall, you apply it after the grass has stopped growth.) Remember that you need to apply one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn. Hopefully you have already tested your soil so you know what else your particular yard needs.
Q: My Rodeo tomato, which you told me to place in a bigger pot so that it could be taken inside in case of a freeze, is growing by leaps and bounds. When is it time to put it in the ground and to plant warm-season vegetables?
A: The short answer is that you can plant when the cool temperatures are above 50 degrees. This includes cantaloupe, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, okra, onions, peppers, potato, pumpkin, summer squash, southern pea, sweet corn, sweet potato, tomato, and watermelon. To be safe, most vegetable planting is recommended to be two to six weeks after the last freeze (and, of course, how do we know that it is going to be the last freeze!) Last year’s last freeze was March 13 when it was 28 degrees at my house.
