Red carpet to be rolled out tonight for annual Guadalupe County By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

Bras For A Cause

take home one of 10 designer purse bundles during tonight's beads raffle.

(Seguin) -- The glitz and glamour of Hollywood comes to Seguin tonight as the red carpet is rolled out for tonight's 6th Annual Guadalupe County Bras For A Cause fundraiser. The night of food and fun features a showcase of local first responders who model and dance their way down the runway all while sporting ornately decorated bras. The elaborated decorated undergarments are designed, created and sponsored by local businesses and individuals hoping to draw in the largest bid from the audience and all for a good cause.

"This is actually the first year that we are really pushing the designer purses. Last year was just different packages that we had for raffle but this year, we've gotten 10 designer bags but with those come other things like there's a voucher for box seats for a Rangers game. There's some different spa packages and stuff and some of the packages are like $1,000 and we have 10 of them so it's pretty good. So, I'm hoping to sell a lot of beads," said Martin. The good cause behind the event, according to Martin, is the opportunity to support local cancer patients. She says for the last several years, this annual event has helped provide those uninsured or under-insured patients with access to cancer treatments at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. She says last year alone raised $92,000 for the local Cancer Assistance Fund.

Committee member Kay Martin says this year's group of organizers is especially excited about tonight's fundraiser at the Seguin Coliseum. She says the event will include more pizzazz than ever before. "It's a really elegant night. Every year, we have a different theme. Last year, was the Roaring Twenties. This year is Hollywood Glamour. We are actually going to have a red carpet that you walk in on and we are hoping that everyone will dress either as their favorite Hollywood character or movie character or just glamorous/evening attire. All of our bras that we have for auction this year actually are a movie theme. All of our fireman and first responders that are dancing are going to be movie themed also and they are going to play a little excerpt from the movie that they are going to be reenacting. So, it's different this year. It's really going to be more of a show," said Martin. In addition to bidding on each of the creatively designed bras, Martin says guests tonight will also have a chance to

"All the money raised stays in Guadalupe County and helps with the cancer assistance fund at the hospital and we've already been able to do several endowments because of this. This is our sixth year and we are pretty proud of it and it's a small group of ladies. There's only 12 on our committee and I don't know how we do it but we do. We pull it off every year," said Martin.

Billings has been among the first responders who volunteer and who participate in the annual fundraiser. The fundraiser is again scheduled tonight at the Seguin Coliseum. Although bras might appear representative of breast cancer, Martin says each undergarment is specially designed with a clear purpose or message in the fight against cancer. See BRAS FOR A CAUSE, page 2

Seguin ISD board seeks community Tickets still available for tonight's input today for superintendent search Bras For A Cause fundraiser By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) --- The Seguin ISD board of trustees search process for a new superintendent continues today with an opportunity for community input. Among the first steps in this process, at the insistence of board members, is to involve district stakeholders in the development of qualifications and characteristics for the ideal superintendent candidate. A series of profile sessions, open to all Seguin ISD residents, will be held today in the Seguin ISD Administrative Office. District officials say today's profile sessions include 4 to 5 p.m. and 5 to 5:45 p.m. for district employees plus 5:45 to 6 p.m. for community members. A Spanish speaker will also be on hand to help offer translation. “We encourage community members to attend and share their views during a timeframe that best meets their individual schedule,” said Sean Hoffmann, Seguin ISD chief communications officer. District stakeholders may also provide input through the online leadership profile questionnaire, posted in English and Spanish, through March 31. Hoffmann says the Texas Association of School Boards Executive Search Services (ESS) was hired by the board on Jan. 30 to assist with the search for a new superintendent. Trustees then held a special school board meeting on Feb. 6 where ESS representatives Butch Felkner and Craig Stockstill publicly shared a

timeline of the search process and answered questions from trustees. That's where these community input opportunities were scheduled. The superintendent position was posted on the TASB web site on Feb. 7. Additionally, a link to the TASB job posting is available through the Seguin ISD web site.

The remaining superintendent search process schedule is as follows:

March 31, 12 a.m., application deadline · April 7, 6:30 p.m., review of applications · April 14-16, 6:30-10 p.m., initial interviews · April 21, 6:30 p.m., prepare for follow-up interviews · April 27-29, 6:30 p.m., follow-up interviews · May 5, site visit to home district · May 6, 6:30 p.m., vote to name a finalist · May 28, 6:30 p.m., vote to hire a finalist

BRAS FOR A CAUSE, continued from page 1 "I haven't made one in years and I decided to make one and it's about almost $100 in jewels and different things on it and it took me about four hours so it's a lot of time. So different ones, they have different movie themes so that will be fun to match that with the movie theme that they are talking about. There's also a couple of them that are representing different kinds of cancer. I didn't know this but brain cancer is gray so there's a beautiful jeweled gray bra that represents brain cancer so kind of cool. There's a different color for every kind of cancer and I didn't know that until last year. We had all of our bras themed with different kinds of cancers like pink is breast cancer," said Martin.

Again, according to the school district, the more community members that have an imput, the better. The search process is working to replace current Supeitnendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez who will resign for a job in Wisconsin at the end of this school year. The online survey for those unable to make it today Martin says friends, businesses and individuals is seguinisd.net. have either stood alone or have come together to

bid on a bra. She says once a bid is awarded, then the garment is theirs. "They do get to keep it. I have one in our office that is on like a stand from the one that I bought last year. It's like a peacock. It's beautiful and people come in and it's here all the time so I just forget about it and people say 'what is that?' So, it's a great way to promote our event so we have a bra in our office all the time. It's kind of funny," said Martin. Bras for a Cause will be held today from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Coliseum. According to Martin, tons of tickets have already been sold for tonight's event. There are still, however, plenty more and will be available at the door or at Keepers Interiors located at 615 N. Austin St. Tickets are $50 each.

TLU Awarded $278,000 to support Senior Corps RSVP Volunteers across multiple counties By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Texas Lutheran University (TLU) announced today that it has received a Senior Corps RSVP grant of $278,254 from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency for volunteering and service. The award will be dispersed over a three-year time period beginning on April 1, 2020. This award will support around 780 Senior Corps RSVP volunteers serving across Guadalupe, Comal, Wilson, and Hays Counties. Today, Senior Corps engages approximately 200,000 Americans at more than 20,000 locations across the nation through its Foster Grandparent, Senior Companion, and RSVP programs. Established in 1971, RSVP engages Americans age 55 and older in citizen service that addresses the nation's most-

pressing challenges-everything from fighting the opioid epidemic, reducing crime and reviving cities, connecting veterans to jobs and benefits, preparing today's students for tomorrow's jobs, ensuring seniors age independently and with dignity, and helping Americans rebuild their lives following a disaster. T h e s e funds were awarded as part of a S e n i o r Corps grant competition to increase the impact of national service in new or specific geographic areas. Through TLU, Senior Corps volunteers can continue programs like America Reads. “Through RSVP of South Central Texas, America Reads allows seniors to be paired with public school students in kinder-

garten through third grade providing one-on-one tutoring that improves literacy skills and instills a love of learning within those children,” said TLU's RSVP of South Central Texas Director Barbara Weyland. “We have 150 volunteers in over 25 schools currently working with more than 300 children.”

According to a CNCS study, Senior Corps volunteers serving with the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs report feeling significantly less depressed and isolated, along with higher health scores.

While serving, Senior Corps volunteers also improve their

A growing body of research points to mental and physical health benefits associated with volunteering, including lower mortality rates, increased strength and energy, decreased rates of depression, and fewer physical limitations.

"The RSVP program empowers older individuals to make a difference in their community through service," said Morgan Klaser, TLU Center For Servant Leadership director. "The service they provide creates lasting impacts in our surrounding community, making the existence of RSVP so important to the lives of many. TLU is proud to partner with RSVP to support our shared commitment to community."

9 WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM After a lot of work and time the Hams were able to turn the ranch into a very nice place. The ranch, which has been in the Ham family for over 100 years, was originally 590 acres. Adjoining land was purchased, as it became available. The property is located on both sides of SH-304, contiguous to IH-10, ac- cording to Foundation Farm Manager Mike Kuck. The couple has continued their la- bors of love these many years. That devotion paid off in 2008, when they were presented with the Conservation Rancher Award by SCS. The Hams are members of the Catholic Church in Gonzales; as well as the Texas Cattle Raisers Association, and the Indepen- dent Cattleman’s Association. The family lived off the land, gar- dening and raising cattle. The Hams, lifelong Gonzales County residents, have used the same cattle brand since 1856. Jimmy remembers times past, when cattle was worked on horses, with dogs; not from four-wheelers. The couple urges representatives to continue to share the Foundation Farm mission. “There are too many young people today that aren’t really aware that meat and vegetables are raised and grown. Those items don’t just automatically appear at the grocery stores,” Carla said. The couple also hopes that others will follow suit, and ensure that their land is kept in pro- duction. “It’s a good option,” Jimmy said. The Farm was initiated under the premise that “nothing would be prac- ticed that any farmer could not follow on his own land”.

An area couple has taken steps to ensure that its family ranch does not become a part of the working lands across the state that are converted for non-agricultural uses. Jimmy and Car- la Ham have gifted their land in Gon- zales County - about 685 acres - to the Luling Foundation Farm.

The family raised Polled Herefords, then crossed them with Black Angus. They ended up raising Brangus, and continued to run a cow/calf operation until recently. The Hams want to thank Mike Kuck and the Foundation Farm Directors for their help in this transition.

On their return, the couple looked at what they had and determined, with the help of others, what they needed to do. that they put their faith and trust in this legacy. It is important that the Foun- dation continues to serve the commu- nity and land owners in this area.”

It was Mr. Davis’ philosophy that “we must demonstrate how to make money. We may spend all our earn- ings and income on educational work, but the business part of The Luling Foundation would be kept on a mon- ey-making basis.”

The Hams wanted the land to stay in production, and felt that the Founda- tion would make sure that happened.

After his father died, Jimmy and Carla moved back to the ranch (in 1989). Jimmy worked for Leif John- son in Austin for 49 years, and Carla retired from Texas Parks & Wildlife. Manager Kuck said that the Foun- dation greatly appreciates the gift pro- vided by the Hams. “We are humbled

They took advantage of a lot of government programs that were “soil and land stewardship at work”. A lot of improvements were made over the years. Brush was cleared, cross fenc- ing was installed, improved grasses were planted, and ponds were built. Board Chairman Gary Dicken- son said it is part of the Foundation Farm’s goal to let people know what’s going on in agriculture through events such as field days, and demonstra- tions. “We will work to continue ag- riculture education and to, hopefully, continue to open doors for others for years to come. We are appreciative of the Hams, and of their gift to the Foundation.” The couple attended numerous pro- grams and field days at The Founda- tion over the years. Their main goal has been to make the ranch fully func- tional while maintaining its natural beauty. They found that information The Foundation has provided, and the demonstrations conducted there, have been very beneficial.

Today, the Foundation Farm em- phasizes Education, Cattle Opera- tions, and various other Operations/ Demonstrations. The ranch, like other property in the area, is home to wildlife. There are white tailed deer, turkeys and, of course, feral hogs. The Luling Foundation was estab- lished in 1927, by Edgar B. Davis; operations are determined by a seven member Board of Directors - two from Caldwell County, two from Gonzales County, two from Guadalupe County, and one member at-large. Those three counties made up the Foundation’s original service area. The Founda- tion’s services have, over the years, extended across the state. Numerous visitors from other countries have vis- ited the Farm.
