Registration now underway for annual Relay for Life Survivor Dinner By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Pre events are currently underway for this year's Guadalupe County Relay for Life celebration. Among the events is the annual Survivor Dinner which will be held a couple of weeks in advance on Sunday, April 5 at the McQueeney Lion's Club. Longtime committee member Jim Johnson, says the invitation is extended to all survivors and one caretaker. "Anyone that is a cancer survivor is invited to the survivor dinner. We'd love to have everyone in the area that has been touched with cancer to participate in this event but we do need to have a RSVP so that we have a headcount," said Johnson. During the event, guests will be treated to a catered meal plus stories of survival. Johnson says this year's overall Relay for Life theme is "Rings of Hope." He says the dinner is the committee's annual effort to showcase "the hope" that exist within those who have battled the disease. He says each year, the committee looks to welcome new faces to the dinner.

"We tell them this is a celebration for them -- an encouragement. If they are currently under treatment, we want to encourage them because of the research that has been done in recent years, more people are surviving cancer and so we want to encourage them to keep faith. There's always hope and those of us that have been several years cancer free -- this is my 33rd year to be cancer free -- we want to celebrate those people also," said Johnson. RSVP is encouraged for the dinner. Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by calling 830-401-0432. When leaving a message, they will be asked to provide a t-shirt size plus the name of their caregiver who will also be attending. Registration is also available online at . Marion ISD prepares to break ground Destination Imagination teams to advance to state competition on bond projects this Saturday Four of them are going to be science classrooms and six regular Ed classrooms so that is what is incorporated into this bond project and that is what we are kicking off on Saturday," said Lindholm. Lindholm says the new facilities are all about staying one step ahead of growth while not sacrificing its small class sizes.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Marion) -- The Marion ISD is gearing up for the construction of $22 million in new and renovated facilities. The school district will be hosting a ground breaking this Saturday for its voter approved bond projects approved in May 2019. Marion ISD Superintendent Kelly Walters Lindholm says the district is excited about rolling out the new classrooms district wide. "The first phase of the bond issue is going to give us 12 additional classrooms at the Primary Elementary Campus as well as a new cafetorium -- a fully functioning kitchen, a new library and a stream lab. It's also going to give us a CTE classroom at the middle school and 10 new additional classrooms at the high school.
angelpest.com 830.379.3277
"This bond was critical. We are seeing unprecedented growth in our district and so to get these classrooms in place and we are expecting a completion in the Fall 2021. So, we will have them for the 2021-2022 school year and it's critical because like I said, we are seeing unprecedented growth, our enrollment numbers are growing so these classrooms are critical. We are so excited to get this project started so that we have a place for these kids that are coming to us that are new to our district. The class sizes, we take a lot of pride in keeping our class sizes low and so the only way we can do that is to have more classroom space to put our kids in and what was so critical about this particular bond phase is that it's all about classroom space in order to preserve what is important to us which is small class sizes and to be able to give our kids an opportunity to not be a number but to truly connect with their teachers and be engaged. That is something that Marion ISD is very proud of and we want to continue," said Lindholm. Overseeing the projects in the Marion ISD will be Pfluger Architects and Jackson Construction. The Marion ISD groundbreaking gets underway at 2 p.m. Saturday in the back patio of the high school.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- A handful of Seguin ISD students are headed to state competition. The Seguin ISD Destination Imagination (DI) teams have earned that right after competing in the regional event last weekend. Seguin ISD Chief Communications Officer Sean Hoffmann says out of six teams, five teams earned an automatic bid to go onto state. "The Seguin ISD is very proud of our DI teams who participated in competition in Helotes over the weekend and they are continuing a tradition -- a long standing tradition of excellence in Destination Imagination for Seguin ISD. So, we have several teams that thanks to their hard work and dedication and the great job that they did over the weekend, they'll be competing on April 4th at the Lone Star Finals for Destination Imagination in Arlington, Texas and I know the students and their parents and sponsors are looking forward to that," said Hoffmann. Teams preparing for state contest include a Seguin High School team consisting of students Gage Compton, Leo de Leon, Gracie Compton, Elizabeth Mays and Seth Kortz. The team took first place in Service Learning. The team also received at Renaissance Award. Students Beckett Legore, Andy McDowall, Trinity Ramirez and Karen Ranft also represented Seguin High School and received first place in Improv. Also earning first place in Improv was the Barnes Middle School team consisting of Eleanor Crettenden, Rylie Wilke, Molly Burns, Ella Kennington, Jade Ramirez and Clara Spencer-Dibble (of Patlan Elementary). The Weinert Elementary team of Griffin Welfel, Laine
McCown, Caleb Pape and August Panozzo also finished first in Fine Arts. A team consisting of Ashton Baker and Lauren Baker of Koennecke Elementary, Addie Dunn of Rodriguez Elementary plus Weinert Elementary's Travis Just, Kooper Goodwin, Jackson Kirchner and Miley Burns also advanced with a first place finish in Scientific. Hoffmann says the Seguin ISD also applauds its creative and critical thinking program coordinators for helping to continue the success of the program. "We're fortunate to have Seguin, the community support Destination Imagination and again, it looks like Michael Olstad and Pam Krippner have put together another great batch of students who again, will be carrying that torch for the district this school year," said Hoffmann. An independent team that also includes Barnes Middle School Student Addison McDowall also earned a DaVinci Award and took first place in Service Learning. This team will also move on to state. Also placing second in Scientific was the Weinert Elementary team of Paige Leyendecker, Ava Martinez, Piper Perry, Allison Schievelbein, Jason Ranft, Raegan Ranft and Evan Flores. Like Seguin ISD, a St. James Catholic School Destination Imagination team and Navarro ISD sixth grade team will also advance to state contest. The award winning team from St. James consists of sixth graders Ariann Milan, Shyan Thomas, Casey Hernandez and Noah Rosas. They will be competing in the Engineering Challenge (also known as "In the Cards" challenge). Representing the Navarro ISD will be the Fab 5. Team members include Taylor Brannan, Lilia Flo, Maddie Reinhard, Kyleigh Whitlow and Taylor Wyatt.

California Declares State Of Emergency For Coronavirus
WA Officals: Work From Home
(Sacramento, CA) -- California is now under a state of emergency due to the coronavirus. Governor Gavin Newsom says 94-hundred people are being monitored for the disease in 49 counties. He gave an update yesterday after the first death was confirmed in the state. An elderly man went on a cruise to Mexico a couple weeks ago, got sick and died in isolation at a hospital. That ship is now being held off the coast. Test kits are being flown out to check other passengers before the ship can be allowed to return. The state has 53 coronavirus cases.
(Olympia, WA) -- Health officials in Washington State are telling people to work from home if possible as the coronavirus continues to spread. Washington has been the hardest hit in the U.S., with at least 10 deaths so far. Officials are also asking people to cancel or postpone large events and for elderly people, to avoid groups and close contact. Governor Jay Inslee said Wednesday he would use his power to cancel large events if it could help prevent the spread of the respiratory infection. Vice President Mike Pence, in charge of the federal response to the virus, will be headed to Washington today to meet with Inslee.
Coronavirus World Death Toll Nearly 3,300 (Undated) -- The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak continues to rise. The global number of deaths is nearly 33-hundred as of today, with the vast majority in China. The number of confirmed cases is also more than 95-thousand. Italy, Iran, and South Korea have announced the most coronavirus deaths outside of China, with more than 100 in Italy. At least 11 people have died from the illness in the U.S.

Hand Sanitizer Sells Out Because Of Coronavirus Fears (New York City, NY) -- Hand sanitizer is flying off the shelves because of the coronavirus. Retailers like CVS and Walmart have been selling out of the product. Hand sanitizer is also selling out on Amazon, leading to price-gouging. Some third-party sellers on Amazon are trying to sell an eight-ounce bottle of Purell for about 45-dollars. The online retailer says it has removed over a million products from its website for violating its price-gouging policies.
