Single vehicle ACCIDENT claims the LIVES of TWO
(Seguin) – Investigation continues into a one vehicle accident that left both the driver and a passenger dead. Sgt. Kenny Mata, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, says the accident happened just before 4 a.m. Thursday on FM 1117. The fatality occurred just south of Highway 90 about a half mile north of mile marker 492.
Mata says the 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup truck
was reportedly heading north on FM 1117 when for some unknown reason veered across the roadway into the southbound lane --causing the vehicle to roll. During the rollover accident, the vehicle crashed into barb wire fencing and a tree.
The identities of the victims have not been released. However, the victim is said to have been an 80-year-old woman.

SEF Mardi Gras fundraiser pulls in record-breaking dollars
(Seguin) – There was no doubt that folks enjoyed celebrating Mardi Gras in Seguin this past week.
Whether it was the gumbo, New Orleans hurricanes, live jazz music or the bidding on premier shopping and travel opportunities, the community showed its support to the Seguin Education Foundation which hosted its Mardi Gras Gala on February 23.
The gala brought in a record-crushing $103,500. The event has now enabled the SEF to fund grants next fall for innovative teaching throughout Seguin ISD classrooms.
Immediately, though, the SEF donated more than $4,500 of the proceeds for the benefit of The Arts at the SISD’s eight primary-level campuses, which is greatly needed to increase artistic opportunities for pre-k through 5th grade students. Donations during Mardi Gras will also help the SEF fund its annual recognition banquet for the top 10 percent of graduating seniors, enabling each of them to formally pay homage to their educator heroes and to receive a small cash scholarship.

Mardi Gras, conttinued.
SEF’s Executive Director, Kelly Donegan Follis was surprised by the success of this year’s Gala after last year’s record-breaking income.
“I am amazed by the generosity of our community! Every time I think we have reached the limit of what our SEF family can do, I am blown away by their outpouring of support. Last year’s event grossed about $74,000, which was a record, so $100,000 seemed impossible. That was the goal, though, and we exceeded it thanks to those who selflessly gave for the students and teachers of the SISD!” said Follis.
According to Follis, a highlight of the evening was the presentation of two videos that showed supporters what the SEF does for the school district and what the school district is experiencing in budgetary constraints for The Arts at the primary campuses.
“This was a new feature that will continue in the future,” said Follis. “I know everyone loves a great party and we certainly delivered that. However, I wanted them to understand that this party is the primary means to fund a really important cause. I think our mission became clearer and that’s part of the reason why donations increased so dramatically. Our guests got to witness the tears and excitement of the Fall 2022 SurPRIZE Patrol when we distributed over $60,000 in grants to our campuses. It’s exciting! We shined a spotlight on those
who benefit from the Mardi Gras donations and let folks know that they really were having a wonderful time for an even more wonderful cause.”
The lucky winner of that night’s huge SEF Golden Ticket raffle was Terry Boland Kasmiroski. Kasmiroski says she saw the Golden Ticket on KWED’s Facebook page. In a post on the social media page, the SEF states, “she figured one-inone-hundred odds were pretty good and the cause appealed to her because her kids attended SISD schools. Terry knew that funding for out-of-the-box instruction through SEF is important, especially as we recover from the academic impact of the pandemic. She supported a great cause, took a chance, and won! She hadn’t mentioned it to her husband, so the phone call was a great surprise for him! Thank you, Terry, and all those who took a chance by supporting SEF your the Golden Ticket purchase!
The prize was a choice of several travel destinations.
The SEF is a 501c3 organization funded entirely by donations. Up next at the SEF is the Race for Education 5K, anchored at The Backyard on April 1. Information about sponsorship, volunteer, and race registration is available on the SEF’s Facebook page and at this link: https://tinyurl.com/v3f546dp. Lady Mats Use Long Ball to Wrap 2-0 Day at Seguin Tournament
Chris Austin
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors smacked three home runs to blow past Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Early College High School, 9-6 and finish up a perfect 2-0 day at the Seguin Softball Tournament on Friday.
A three-run bomb by Ryan Rangel in the first inning, a two-run jack by Chole Belicek in the second inning and a two-run blast from Camryn Rios in the third accounted for seven of the nine runs Seguin would score in getting the victory in their second game of the day. Rios finished the game 3 for 3 with a single, double and home run in her three at-bats.
Belicek went 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored. Summer Flores was also 2 for 2 with a run scored for the Lady Mats.
Madyson Schultze picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Mats as she fanned four Lady Bears on
the afternoon.
Seguin won their first game earlier in the day over a playoff nemesis from years past, knocking off Leander 8-3. The Lady Lions bounced Seguin from the playoffs two years ago, but the Lady Matadors were able to take down Leander for the first time in the tenure of head coach John Garcia on Friday. Kendall Hurt earned the victory in the circle for Seguin.
Seguin is now 2-2 through the first two days of the tournament. The Lady Mats will wrap up the tourney on Saturday with two more games. Seguin plays Laredo United at 10 a.m. and then will round out the tournament with Alice on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. All tournament games are held at the fields at Huber Ranch.

Heaven welcomed a beautiful new angel. Verlyn entered heaven’s eternal gates after a brief illness on February 26, 2023 at the age of 87.
Verlyn was born to Richard and Edna (Moltz) Wesch on March 4, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas. She married Arnold Schulze on February 13, 1954. Verlyn was the quintessential farm wife. In addition to raising three daughters, she worked side-by-side with Arnold on the family farm. In a particularly dry period in the early 1970’s, she took a job with WestPoint Pepperell in New Braunfels in the Industrial Engineering department as a Frequency Checker on the swing shift (3 PM-11 PM) to supplement the farm income. During that employment she never missed a beat supporting her children and Arnold on the farm.
Arnold and Verlyn established a business, Schulze Grain, providing seed, fertilizer, chemicals and grain storage to neighbors and friends. Verlyn enjoyed visiting with her Schulze Grain customers at the picnic table and scale house. In what little leisure time she had, she loved trips to Louisiana and Eagle Pass casinos.
Verlyn is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jerome Wesch and wife Hildegard and Roger Wesch; brother-in-law, Lawrence Hoffman. Also preceding her in death brother-in-law, Elroy Schulze and wife Kathryn; sister-in-law Laura Mae Gerdes and husband George.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, daughters Denise Hufnagl (Robert), Cherryl Baethge (Darryl), Pam Grandstaff (Gary), grandchildren –Kelly Schumann (Matthew), Jennifer Lott (Simon), Katy Dylla (Charlie), Robert Allen Hufnagl and Ethan Zwicke, step-grandchildren Robert Baethge (Melissa), Kenneth Baethge (Jenn), thirteen great-grandchildren, sister Joyce Hoffman, sister-in-law Everlyn Norman and spouse Bert and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 6, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Graveside services will be conducted by Pastor Marcus Bigott at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at the Guadalupe Valley Memorial Cemetery. NIH RECOVER research identifies potential long COVID disparities
Black and Hispanic Americans appear to experience more symptoms and health problems related to long COVID(link is external), a lay term that captures an array of symptoms and health problems, than white people, but are not as likely to be diagnosed with the condition, according to new research funded by the National Institutes of Health. The findings – from two different studies by NIH’s Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery(link is external) (RECOVER) Initiative – add to a growing body of research aimed to better understand the complex symptoms and other issues associated with long COVID that millions have experienced.
“This new evidence suggests that there may be important differences in how long COVID manifests in different racial and ethnic groups,” said Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D., a professor of neurology and epidemiology at Columbia University, New York City, and chief clinical science officer for the American Heart Association. “However, further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms for these differences in symptoms and access to care, and also if diagnostic codes assigned by clinicians may play a role.”
In one analysis, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine(link is external), researchers looked at the health records of 62,339 adults who received a positive COVID-19 test at one of five academic health centers in New York City, all between March 2020 and October 2021. They tracked the patients’ health for one to six months after the positive test and compared the findings to 247,881 adults who never had COVID.
Among 13,106 adults who had severe COVID that required hospital care, the researchers found Black and Hispanic adults were disproportionately represented. Of those who had these severe cases, for example, 1 in 4 were Black adults, 1 in 4 were Hispanic adults, and 1 in 7 were white adults.
In the months following infection, Black adults with severe disease were more likely than white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes and experience headaches, chest pain and joint pain, but less likely to have sleep disorders, cognitive problems, or fatigue. Similarly, Hispanic adults who required hospital care were more likely than white adults to have headaches, shortness of breath, joint paint, and chest pain, but less likely to have sleep disorders, cognitive problems, or fatigue.
Similar patterns emerged among people with mild to moderate disease. Among patients who were not hospitalized, Black adults were more likely to have blood clots in their lungs, chest pain, joint pain, anemia, or be malnourished. Hispanic adults were more likely than white adults to have dementia, headaches, anemia, chest pain, and diabetes. Conversely, white adults were most likely to have conditions such as cognitive impairment (sometimes referred to as “brain fog”) and fatigue.
